Kotaku - Former Japanese Pop Queen Sure Looks Familiar... (Ayu as copycat)

So Kotaku decided to write how Ayu copied or was "inspired" by other artists. Yay, why the heck they decided to write it all of sudden? I mean i like kotaku but timing is so weird.

Marcelo 19th November 2014 10:25 AM

I just saw this on Facebook, complete crap, I mean, you take ashower on music video = you copied Madonna, okay.... And yes, why now? Plus that facemask & L cover, please....

My Rainbow 19th November 2014 10:55 AM

what is a kotaku?

pepper 19th November 2014 11:29 AM

I love these things. It's so logical :3

Same pose and blonde hair = copycat!
Wear the same color (Destinys Child and Christina Millian) = copycat!
Use "pin-up" theme = copycat! Because Xtina was first and last to use it!
OMG ONLY BRITNEY WEAR RED LATEX AND BLACK LACES! SHE INVENTED THEM or what?
Use a bike as a backround = copycat, cause only Pam used that :D

I only see "copy" influences in Kylie's costume and Madonna's 2 clips. (Rain and Bedtime Story) and maybe a little od Celine but the theme is so clique itself so it's nothing original to compare :P

Tom Punks 19th November 2014 03:35 PM

lulz, didn't they just steal these photo compilations from somewhere else on the net? How ironic.

They write about games, manga, anime news, sometimes music. Usually they are light texts. Funny thing is they took that data from 2ch :P That says quite much. Great source.

mizuki-7 19th November 2014 04:05 PM

Yeah... again this ...take one picture out of the context and you can make everybody a copycat ...
It's obvious she took inspiration from singers she admired or were popular in the west but come on most of them have no sens because it's out of context especially the MV and visuals or commercials ! I'm always impressed how people react toward these kind of pictures ! In the pop culture nothing is really unique ...
Like it's impossible to have the same idea as someone else O_o

Pieces_of_SEVEN 19th November 2014 04:06 PM

me to the hatin ass author.

tokyoxjapanxfan 19th November 2014 04:16 PM

oh my god lolol dip it low I can't even believe that's included.

xLuna&1LOVE 19th November 2014 04:23 PM

Okay, who cares?. I thought this was nothing new. Not that she is a copycat, of course not: there is a whole creative team around her, but that she had some resemble moments with Western artists.
The article is a little irrelevant. Whatever.

CatGirl 19th November 2014 04:41 PM

lmao literally almost all of this is from Jpop Trash like 10 years ago

Delicious n Bold 19th November 2014 05:07 PM

She probably did or was really inspired by some stuff. But that's just the way it goes most of the time.

DevilsClap 19th November 2014 05:19 PM

If the thing with the mask of L is supposed to make her a copycat, shouldn't be Misono be one too? If I'm not mistaken she took this theme once too for a CD of hers...

Most of these seem quite silly to me..

Andrenekoi 19th November 2014 05:59 PM

Funny enough they didn't get the AT02 resemblance to Madonna's Drowned World Tour... That was straight up copycatting and is highly overlooked.

But it's actually good that those stuff are showing up... Shows that she still is relevant.

tokyoxjapanxfan 19th November 2014 06:06 PM

^ Probably overlooked because Madonna was using Japanese culture as inspiration, and accusing a Japanese person of copying a non-Japanese person for wearing a Japanese inspired costume has less impact, haha.

Andrenekoi 19th November 2014 06:25 PM

^But Ayu copied her on the british punk section too, haha!

Delirium-Zer0 19th November 2014 11:22 PM

I have a hard time watching alot of AT2002 because of its similarities to the Drowned World tour lol... that plus the editing of the DVD is irritating. :P

But yeah I saw this article earlier today and I was like... lol welcome to 10 years ago. The author of this particular article isn't even trying to do anything with his articles except say "Hey look how much I know about Japanese stuff that isn't anime! AREN'T I TOTALLY CULTURED?!?!" It's annoying. Nothing he writes is worth reading.

Andrenekoi 20th November 2014 12:48 AM

^My problem with it is how bad it is!

Edit: The concert, I didn't even bothered reading the article...

leafyamazaki 20th November 2014 03:59 AM

Nobody really cares about that site anyway. They used to be pretty credible when it came to gaming news or info, but that all went downhill around the time Brian Crecente (one of the editors) left.

monochrome99 20th November 2014 11:37 AM

Yikes

Also wasn't there a japanese artist that did the L cover concept and said ayu ripped me off?

You would have to be daft to not find these similar. It's not on ayu, it's on the director. I just watched Madonna's Drowned World video and my god did they rip it off with dearest.

The concept of evo is too similar to the other one. Same for My Names Women and Get Right.

Minttulatte 20th November 2014 12:39 PM

Ugh, am I the only one who can smell the "HATER" atmosphere all over the post? Seriously, this poster must be one of those people who were fans of Ayu at some point and then got annoyed with everything and became a hater of hers. I don't know why but I just get this kind of vibe from that post. Or is it just my Ayu stan side seeing things that aren't there? o.O

LONJJONG 20th November 2014 02:38 PM

Umh the article itself is dated lol.

The L face mask thingy was done by misono way earlier.

terra 20th November 2014 03:28 PM

LMAO at the article,
God when was the last time I saw those Jpop Trash pics :laugh this thing is waaaay dated, the writer makes it as if it's still relevant

NintendoHTF1242 20th November 2014 04:09 PM

Kotaku is an awful news outlet so I don't get why you guys are getting hot and bothered. We've seen so many articles like this in the past anyway. Irrelevant journalist.

Heavenly 20th November 2014 07:28 PM

And we can easily say that, even if Ayu or Madonna are artist that lead their careers, they don't have the role of photographer / director. Even less when it comes to TV-CM (e.g. : Hi-chew).
They do have a word about this or that aspect aesthetically speaking, but clearly not the whole thing.
Plus, we all know that Ayu is a big fan of Madonna, I wouldn't be surprised to see any similarities between the 2 as a tribute more than a copycat.

ストロボ・EdGE 20th November 2014 10:55 PM

ourselves was a pretty blatant Aguilera/Madonna lift. I don't really care, mostly.

orbitalaspect 21st November 2014 11:05 AM

It's so funny to look through, because the first one or two, sure, I could see how Ayu or the directors could have copied major concepts in another video. But the rest are like... Ayu touches water... Ayu wears glasses... Ayu wears skimpy outfit... and the author is trying to leave this impression that this is all evidence of Ayumi hamasaki being unoriginal. :P (The work on finding four or five different music videos from completely different artists to make the case for the PV of ourselves is pretty bad.)

It's like

HEADLINE NEWS: Ayumi Hamasaki spotted in public bathroom in Tokyo just MINUTES after Madonna spotted leaving restroom in NYC.

HEADLINE NEWS: Ayumi Hamasaki admits she has breasts! ... But did she get them to emulate Britney Spears?!

SheFliesHigher 21st November 2014 04:55 PM

Oh my God, I haven't seen some of those comparison pics in years. I remember when the Celine Dion perfume one and the Britney Spears red suit one were blowing up the forum. Meeeeemmmoriiiieeessss.

Uemarasan 22nd November 2014 06:16 AM

Reads like something written by the intellectually immature. Nothing exists in a vacuum.

Dustie 26th November 2014 12:35 AM

Just wrote a comment under the article... what a shock that they pulled this out now. What's wrong with them, are they experiencing a major shortage of news and stories?

relmy 28th November 2014 09:44 PM

I wish I could get paid to turn old comparison pics into articles. So easy and lazy.

LOL it's like i hear this all the time who copies who. like come on.
it's true.

perfectodub 14th January 2015 06:20 PM

the big difference is that madonna make an album every 4 year, and she have only 8 tours in a 30 year carreer, in the other hand ayu have 16 full working years, albums and tours every year, plenty of awards and the recognition of the public..i think she deserve more respect.

Andrenekoi 14th January 2015 06:58 PM

^Madonna has tons of awards and the respect of the public too...

:shakehead....

in the first place this guy is not disrespecting madonna
he treating ayu as a nobody copycat crappy artist.
im not saying ayu deserve more respect than madonna..im saying she deserve more respect from his part.

Andrenekoi 15th January 2015 06:39 AM

^Meh, don't take the article too seriously, that was a click bait.

Ayu being used as a click bait by itself shows relevance.
