About Leo
Spoiler:
Early Life

Singer-songwriter, born in Fukuoka in December 1994, started on the piano at a young age, and participated in her school choir at elementary school. Being interested in music and drama from young, she was brought up with strong awareness to the concept of "emotions" in the arts. Once, as she got hold of a photo album from Finland, thinking that she would probably never get to meet the people in the photos in her whole life made her feel miserable. Before she realised it, she began to pen such thoughts down in poetry as they accumulated through her emotional youth, and began to write her own songs as she delved deeper into music each day, which eventually led her to the doors of VOICE Fukuoka Music School with a guitar in hand at age 13.
Ieiri Leo promoting LEO (2012)
Such was her thoughts during her youth - she began to write "Sabrina" as she was enveloped by complications and when she finished it at age 15, she decided that she wanted to live by a genuine career in music.

In spring of 2011, she moved to Tokyo alone. Besides attending high school in Tokyo, she continued to write songs and participate in live performances.

Debut

On February 15th 2012, she made her major debut with "Sabrina". The title track was used as the ending theme song for the anime Toriko and as the ending theme song for the TV program Sokketsu! Wake Ari Nee-san EX. The single reached #9 on the Oricon weekly charts and charted for 9 weeks.

On May 9th, she released her first digital single, "Shine." The song was used as the theme song for the drama Kaeru no Oujo-sama. A week later the song was released as her second single. The single reached #7 on the weekly Oricon charts and charted for 9 weeks.

On September 12th, she released her third single, "Bless You." The B-side song, "Ijiwaru na Kamisama" was used as the "Pocky" commercial song. The single reached #8 on the weekly Oricon charts selling 14,498 copies in it's first week.

On October 24th, she released her debut album, LEO. Her debut album sold over 70,000 copies in 7 weeks, debuting at #1 on the daily Oricon charts with 32,355 copies sold in the first week.

Two days after Ieiri's 18th birthday, on December 15, she was awarded the "Best New Artist" award by Billboard Japan.

I'm not familiar with any of her earlier releases, but Kimi ga kureta natsu has been stuck in my head ever since I started watching Koinaka. :heart

Maemi 22nd August 2015 04:32 PM

^ me too, I love it! :3

YuriChan 22nd August 2015 05:52 PM

I love this woman and her songs! :luv2 I've been a fan since she debuted!! :heart

matt9210 22nd August 2015 06:26 PM

^ Same, I've always been surprised at the little support I see for her online. Beautiful voice, and I'm glad Kimi ga Kureta Natsu seems to be a hit for her (it's been #1/high on the recochoku charts for a while I think).

I do generally prefer her singles pre-Junjou though, so for those new to her definitely check out her earlier stuff ^_^

Kacku 22nd August 2015 07:48 PM

^ It's funny, I always see people loving her early releases, but I can't really get into her first two albums or remember most of the singles (LOVE Bless you though). 20 got me hard though, so many songs I love (miss you, little blue, Silly, TWO HEARTS, Junjou...).

I need to go listen to Kimi ga Kureta Natsu some more.

Maemi 22nd August 2015 08:38 PM

^ I cannot stop listening to Kimi ga Kureta Natsu, it's so beautiful *.*

Bigtop 23rd August 2015 05:04 AM

Badly needed a thread like this! :O

I can't wait for Kimi ga Kureta Natsu...once I'm back home from Michigan. Flying home later today (or tomorrow, since I just posted it past midnight EDT), and also crossing fingers if my desktop computer back home turns on as normal...

chocopockymaster 23rd August 2015 05:07 AM

They played a piano version of Kimi ga kureta natsu over the end credits of ep 5 of Koinaka that I really want in full...!!! I'm bummed it's not on the single. Maybe it'll be released on the show's soundtrack?

Miduhyo 23rd August 2015 06:53 AM

I'm in love with this woman. Her first album is one of my favorites and I really enjoyed the concert for it too. Not such a huge fan of 'a boy' but that's all right. But 20. Ohmigawd, 20. I love it. Seriously, I'm so happy there's a thread for her here now!

By the way, I just have to say it, she rocks that hairstyle. It's too perfect for her.

either that or on her next single :)

I haven't had a chance to listen to 20 yet, but Kimi ga kureta natsu reminded me I had to and I'm not disappointed, it's really good <3. I've known her since her debut days and I used to be obsessed with Sabrina and Shine, there was a period when I kept being disappointed with her singles so I kind of stopped paying attention to her, but ever since Junjo she's on fire <3

Maemi 23rd August 2015 12:07 PM

Some fans have compared her to YUI, both musically and physically :) And somehow I can see where is that coming from.

Bigtop 23rd August 2015 11:47 PM

Well, both Leo and YUI are from Fukuoka (same as Ayu)...

AyuGAME 24th August 2015 02:37 AM

for me...

Shine and Silly are still her best songs so far..

I like darker stuff...

Utena 24th August 2015 10:22 AM

She also went to the same music school as YUI and ayaka it seems. But honestly, beside the genre of music itself, I don't really find them similar.

matt9210 25th August 2015 05:03 PM

This thread, as well as her new single, has put me in a Ieiri Leo mood lately :P Been listening to her third album more, as it didn't really stick with me at first. "little blue" and "Still" are lovely! It's still my least favourite album from her, but I don't mean it's bad.

I love Carnival from "a boy", can't be the only one? :P

Minttulatte 25th August 2015 07:06 PM

I listened to the short versions from the opening post of thus thread and they didn't sound bad. I think I'm gonna download her albums and give them a listen. Her voice was very beautiful. :)

Bigtop 26th August 2015 05:58 AM

Leo Ieiri got #6 weekly, though the gap between #5 and #6 was pretty huge. Top five sold no less than 74,000.

http://s26.postimg.org/5gncskdat/201..._2015_08_1.jpg

Best ranked single in her career so far? Probably...

Miduhyo 26th August 2015 07:03 AM

^ Nice. Kimi ga Kureta Natsu is such a beautiful song, it deserves more attention.

Maemi 22nd September 2015 02:34 PM

Oh it's so siriiiii

Earth_maiden 20th October 2015 12:30 AM

Taiyou no Megami is the song that got me into her so it will always be my favourite song.

matt9210 21st October 2015 03:03 PM

She's doing a mini Zepp tour in February. I entered a lottery for a chance to buy a ticket and won, so I'll be seeing her in Nagoya :D

Maemi 23rd October 2015 11:43 AM

LEO has become my fav album by her. Lady Mary is FANTASTIC!!

Bigtop 25th October 2015 03:23 AM

Heads-up: Leo Ieiri's YouTube videos may have been blocked because Leo's part of Victor Entertainment...and these videos may have been blocked because of YouTube Red - and the possible disagreement of terms, despite its foreign location relative to the USA.

Bigtop 27th November 2015 06:03 AM

Not in the Kouhaku this year! Maybe it's going to take a while for her to rise enough to a level where she's going to be invited to the Kouhaku (someday), although I had a thought that she may or may not be invited to the Kouhaku (could go any way, turns out she isn't)...

Kacku 14th January 2016 06:54 PM

Question time! I bought the CD-only version of 20 for Christmas, and it finally arrived this week. Included on the CD is the bonus track, Silly (Another Version), which I hadn't seen uploaded anywhere before. So if it really isn't too widely available already, does anyone want me to rip and upload it?

Also, news update: new single Hello To The World coming out on February 17th, in three versions!

Covers:

6. オバケのなみだ (Instrumental)

Utena 14th January 2016 07:05 PM

^ I wouldn't say no the Silly (Another version) :)

I really like her artwork covers these days, so creative <3

Earth_maiden 14th January 2016 07:13 PM

^me too, I'd love to hear another version of Silly.

Kacku 14th January 2016 08:07 PM

Here it is, enjoy. :)

Miduhyo 16th January 2016 03:50 AM

Thanks for the upload. It's beautiful. I love this song. The Acoustic just makes it that much better.

Utena 16th January 2016 11:06 AM

thanks! :)

matt9210 5th February 2016 08:01 AM

I went to Ieiri's concert in Nagoya last night, damn I love this girl! Vocals absolutely spot on, and it's nice to see she looked like she was having fun too.

She covered Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time" (she also sang her own song with the same name too) and a more surprising one, Kelly Clarkson's "Just Missed the Train". I'd never heard this one before so listened when I got back, and I actually prefer Ieiri's version.

She sang a stripped back version of Silly too which was awesome! My favourite though was "Still" <3

Bigtop 5th February 2016 09:43 AM

^ You're so lucky to see her in person!

Anyways, did you realize "two colours" (subtitle of Leo Ieiri's current live tour) is using British spelling, since I understand you flew all the way from England?

matt9210 6th February 2016 07:58 PM

^ Aha, I didn't actually realise, as it's "Live at Zepp 2016" written on the t-shirts. Also, I'm here for a year so I'm lucky in that I'm seeing most of the artists I've wanted to for years! :)

She also announced she's doing a hall tour this Autumn, but I won't be in Japan for that one. I wonder if she'll have a new album for the tour?

Bigtop 7th February 2016 08:06 AM

Possibly. She released a single back in August, and she's about to release a new single in less than two weeks, and we're still only in February, so it's possible she might release at least a new single before a new album come out, but we'll have to wait and see...

Miduhyo 12th March 2016 02:41 PM

So, I know I'm bumping this thread, but I'm getting a little desperate here since I've searched the whole internet and can't find anything but not-as-well-sounding covers but does anyone have "Silly" instrumental? I know it was released on a single but I can't find an actual instrumental anywhere. It'd be a huge help!

Kacku 18th May 2016 08:48 PM

Leo released a new single, Bokutachi no Mirai, last week! I really like the title track, it's the most synthpop song she's done and it's really catchy and fresh! A great song for the summer. :) The b-side, Watashi no Uta, is... reggae? It's a bit odd, but fine enough. And I'm ashamed to admit this, but I can't remember how the second b-side, a live version of Silly, sounds... I think it was a nice ballad-y version with a less hard-hitting chorus? I need to go back to it, but I just want to stick to the title track, lol.

Maemi 18th May 2016 09:04 PM

These covers are AMAZING| :luv2

Kacku 26th June 2016 09:32 PM

Leo has an album coming out in less than two weeks, why am I only finding out now?!

Covers:

WE
Release date 2016.07.06.

CD:
1. 僕たちの未来 (Bokutachi no Mirai)
2. Brand New Tomorrow
3. 君がくれた夏 (Kimi ga Kureta Natsu)
4. 恍惚 (Koukotsu)
5. Party Girl
6. I Wish
7. we
8. Hello To The World
9. シティボーイなアイツ (City Boy na Aitsu)
10. さよなら Summer Breeze (Sayonara Summer Breeze)
11. そばにいて、ラジオ (Soba ni Ite, Radio)
12. Every Single Day
13. オバケのなみだ (Obake no Namida)

DVD:
1. Live at Zepp DiverCity 2016.2.2 ~two colours~
- サブリナ (Acoustic) (Sabrina)
- miss you
- Still
- Lady Mary
- Last Stage
- Silly

- 希望の地球 (Kibou no Chikyuu)
- Hello To The World
- Sabrina (サブリナ)
2. "Bokutachi no Mirai" Music Video -Another version-
3. "Hello To The World" Music Video -Another version-

I'm actually surprised they didn't add the piano version of Kimi ga Kureta Natsu as a bonus track, I thought it was a big hit for her. More surprised that Obake no Namida is the last song though, it's such a non-entity to me... I hope the new tracks are as good as Bokutachi no Mirai, I'm still really enjoying that song. :)

salina 26th June 2016 10:23 PM

thxx for the covers:love

Bigtop 27th June 2016 04:49 AM

To be honest, we haven't been really willing to update this at a timely manner. I know I follow Leo Ieiri a bit, but it's just that I haven't been really motivated to update this thread as of now...

(And still the YouTube Red issues as any YouTube video involving Victor Music artists is blocked stateside and probably anywhere else YouTube Red is offered, and unfortunately Leo is part of it. This YouTube Red thingy still bugs us even after eight months. (>_<))

Maemi 8th July 2016 07:20 PM

The new album WE has been released :) I'll update the first post ;)

Maemi 24th July 2016 09:50 PM

Guys do you like the new album? Somehow I find it to be weaker than her previous ones and I love them all.

AyuGAME 25th July 2016 02:33 AM

^Same here...weaker than her previous album..lot of unnecessary filler songs

even the A-side not really supporting the album

YUKARI 25th July 2016 05:05 PM

poor Ieiri Leo, she was so promising back in 2012 :(

Bigtop 26th July 2016 08:07 AM

Is it just me, or is one part of my brain thinking I'm a bit bored with Leo Ieiri these days (along with too many musicians that I follow)...?

Maemi 12th August 2016 02:24 PM

^ we can't really know that :laugh but yeah, the new album is not as strong as the previous ones.

dreamalley 14th October 2016 12:33 PM

*clears cobwebs* yelloooooooow!

I discovered Ieiri Leo through a japanese drama.

I was watching "N no tame ni" and her song "Silly" was the main song.

It was a really good drama (and it won tons of awards that year) and there was a really heartbreaking love story. "Silly" just fit in so nicely there and I loved it.

Miduhyo 14th October 2016 12:45 PM

Ooooh! I like how you included the link to the dramaaaaa~~ now I know what to watch next.

And I love Silly. i haven't listened to her much but I do remember pretty much every lyric to that song.

Whoa, whoa, wait a second. There was a new album? Anyone got the link?

AyuGAME 14th October 2016 03:52 PM

Yeah Silly is a strong song..N no tame ni is a good drama as well

Maemi 3rd November 2017 02:28 PM

Wow this thread is really dead :( Too bad...

Earth_maiden 3rd November 2017 09:00 PM

Has she released anything after her 5th anniversary best? I got the DVD version with the video clips, I like having collections like that. :)

Bigtop 4th November 2017 12:47 AM

Yeah, we need to keep this alive...here's what happened since the 5th anniversary best album that released back in February of this year:
  • Budokan live on 30 April (and DVD/Blu-ray released on 26 July)
  • Single 'Zutto, Futari de' released on 26 July
  • Zepp lives on September
  • Leo also stars on TV Tokyo late-night drama 'Shinjuku Seven' (that also stars a KAT-TUN member)

And this just in recently - new song called 'Relax', being used for LINE's Clova WAVE AI speaker (much to the likes of the Amazon Echo or something):

Gosh, why wasn't anybody updating this thread? Busy lives like me or somethign?

Maemi 4th November 2017 07:58 AM

I was kinda disappointed in the last album so I wasn't following her releases. Thanks for the update :)

Earth_maiden 18th February 2018 06:17 PM

I'm in love with 'Relax', it's so edgy and different to her usual ballady songs. :love

Bigtop 19th February 2018 07:01 AM

Seriously, this thread needs to be updated more often, considering the fact that Leo's about to release an album - "TIME" - this week...

Is anyone here going to contribute? Honestly, I don't have the time to do so.

Maemi 19th February 2018 10:33 AM

I'll update the first post later but this thread has had three pages for three years already, people are not interested so there's no point really :shrug

axmish87 19th February 2018 11:06 AM

After Leo every subsequent release was underwhelming for me. Singles were okay for the most part but albums felt like they were filled with filler songs. Too bad because she was so promising at the start of her career. LEO is still her best album for me. Every release after LEO felt more mellow or safe to say the least. Now she is like Kana Nishino 2.0.
Relax is okay

Maemi 19th February 2018 02:13 PM

I like the first three albums on the whole. Then she released WE and I was like meh... such an underwhelming release after those three masterpieces.

I just listened to TIME's previews and they all sound boring.

Maemi 19th February 2018 02:16 PM

Bigtop 28th February 2018 09:28 AM

First week sales: #4 at 15,284. Beaten by JUJU (#1, 28,987) and a couple of releases from January ("The Greatest Showman" movie soundtrack and EXO)...this is disappointing sales.

What have happened???

the3ye 28th February 2018 02:59 PM

4th Position is better than her two previous albums (best excluded)
Not sure about sales though.

Maemi 18th March 2018 04:29 PM

Does anyone like her new album?

I can't remember even one song :tired

Earth_maiden 19th March 2018 05:57 PM

I still adore Relax. That track alone saves the album for me. I've yet to listen to the whole thing in one go though.

Kacku 22nd March 2018 04:20 PM

I listened to the new album and thought some songs were good (so at least this album was better than WE, which I outright disliked), but nothing was good enough to make me want to go back and I can't remember the songs anymore. I'm just... where did all her great songs go? She used to have striking, instantly memorable and likable singles, but I've found her recent output mostly a little bland. :/

matt9210 1st June 2019 01:09 PM

Oh damn, over a year since the last post? :o

I came here to say that I'm disappointed with her latest album DUO, and saw the posts above disappointed with TIME :P

Has anyone else listened to DUO? I actually prefer TIME to this. and saw her live on the tour supporting TIME (which made some songs grow on me). I've been trying to get into DUO because she's touring again, but I just can't get into it bar a few songs (they aren't even the singles).

Bigtop 2nd June 2019 05:35 AM

Haven't had time to update this, I've been too busy with school. Don't know why there hasn't been anyone else trying to update this in the first place...!

Earth_maiden 15th August 2019 06:37 PM

is there a website with all the lyrics translations?

Bigtop 16th August 2019 05:40 AM

^ Yeah, I'd be interested in that as well.

the3ye 16th August 2019 04:03 PM

You can find some on tumblr: https://kimonobeat.tumblr.com/search/ieiri Not much, but still something.

I need new songs from her. I love DUO but I'm craving for her next single

Earth_maiden 20th August 2019 08:10 PM

^thanks! I was wanting lyrics from the new album, but if they don't exist then what can you do? (I do not have the confidence to translate them myself, but if I get desperate I might give it a try... :dead2)

Ashen Twilight 4th January 2020 04:31 AM

So I just listened to DUO and I have to say I quite liked it, at least more than what I remember of TIME or WE. I do think her quality made a huge dip after 20, which is my favorite from her with her debut being close behind. Idk what staying power it will have in my library though. Sad.

Bigtop 5th January 2020 06:36 AM

Leo is set to release a new single on 29 January titled "Mikansei".

EDIT 6 January: The (short version) music video is out:

Spoiler:

Ashen Twilight 15th January 2020 06:08 AM

^Thanks for sharing!

So I have had more time to Digest DUO and even took the opportunity to listen to TIME. I would be curious to see everyone else rank the albums so I am sharing my below!

1. 20 - This album definitely has her strongest songs, both from a single and album song perspective. She hits it out of the park with both ballad and upbeat songs. Kokoro no Katachi is def my fave on the whole album. The song has a whole new life to it. little blue I think may be my next favorite, which is surprising, but it is just so good!

2. LEO - Is this surprising? I feel like this will either be everyone's 1 or 2. I think LEO has the best singles of any era, Shine being the standout for me. The album tracks are also good, but the only real standouts here are Last Stage, Lady Mary, and Linda. Out of all the tracks, I think Hello may actually be my fave.

3. DUO - I am honestly surprised at how much I have listened and enjoyed this album since I last posted a few days ago. This album seems to be very refreshing and honestly has staying power. Standouts here are Prime Numbers, Whenever, Overflow, Neon Nights, and Sasanqua.

4. WE - I feel like this will be controversial. So there are only about 6 songs I truly enjoy from this album, but for me they are better than the best songs from a boy and TIME. I really enjoy City Boy na Aitsu, Koukotsu, and Bokutachi no Mirai.

5. a boy - To me this is a perfect example of the sophomore slump. I feel like each song only gets about 60% there compared to the magic of 20 and LEO, but the best songs on DUO and WE are better than the best songs on a boy, for me at least. I can't think of a song I routinely go to on this album aside from Taiyou no Megami

6. TIME - I think this will be about the same for everyone, but I can see why people would put WE down here since it was the first album post Nishio Yoshihiko. I think the only song I truly enjoy is Relax... and parts of Binetsu.

a boy was the first album of hers I heard and purchased so its sentimental to me, after that would probably be DUO then LEO. I still don't have the physical copy of her first album. T_T

I've been able to play her on Spotify in Australia. :)

I got my Mikansei single a few days ago, I got the CD+DVD version with the a cappella lives and its such a cute DVD. Like a cappella PVs of her and some of her band members in a warehouse, so the acoustics are pretty good. :D

"Answer" EP physical release has been delayed due to the volatile COVID-19 situation. Last week, Japan declared a state of emergency, including Tokyo, and prefectural government orders are shutting down non-essential businesses during this time, including CD shops.

Since CD shops are pretty much closed on the supposed release date of 22 April, it makes sense to delay the physical release of the single until no earlier than 13 May, although that is subject to change depending on what's going on with COVID-19 in Japan overall.

"Answer" song will still be available digitally on 22 April, but the cover songs will have to wait until the physical release.

^it makes sense, I hope it doesn't affect sales too badly or anything.

Anyways, have you been recently seeing Leo Ieiri full MVs out on YouTube? They've been slowly releasing it to the general public (although it was available as 'early access' for YouTube Music Premium subscribers, including YouTube Premium members, for quite some time).

As of time of this writing, we're only left with "Mikansei" from back this January, which should happen in 23 hours from now (Tuesday 21 April)...and "Answer" MV will follow that (Wednesday 22 April, the initial release date until the aforementioned COVID-19 delay).

I'll try to compile the full list of full MVs probably once "Answer" MV comes out on YouTube, although I heard it already aired on SSTV at first.

Seeing quite a trend of 'full MV dumps' (in addition to limited-time live concert distribution) especially at a time when we're stuck at home...even saw that with miwa and Sayuri Sugawara recently.

Okay, so here's the list of Leo Ieiri MVs in full:
Spoiler:
I thought "Ijiwaru na Kamisama" - "Bless You" B-side - had an MV? I'm surprised this wasn't uploaded officially. Maybe it was an SSTV exclusive back then?

Is there any other missing MVs that Victor Entertainment didn't upload on YouTube officially?

Also, here's "Harukaze" short film - this was released two years ago in full.

And this is the MV for "Answer", but it won't go online until Wednesday, 22 April 2020 at midnight JST (UTC +9):
