I'm loving all the previews so far, especially 'RUN' and 'WORK IT!'. I've had 'RUN' stuck in my head ever since the teaser came out, I predict it's going to become a new career favourite ballad for me. All the new songs sound like they have a lot of variety of sounds between the verses and chorus', so I'm looking forward to hearing them all in full! When I saw that Aespa's Ningning had done an English version of the 'RUN' teaser I was a little nervous that people would get the dates wrong and think Kuu had copied them, but it seems like it's given Kuu's teaser a nice bit of publicity boost! People are even citing Kuu's as the original and Ningning's as a cover since Kuu's teaser was released a few days before, although other's say it must just be that SM bought the same song at a similar time to Kuu, which I assume with them being released so close together would be the right answer. Although I did notice at the beginning of Ningning's teaster she drew a blue butterfly on the wall, which is a symbol Kuu has used multiple times in her career and has a tattoo of. Probably just a coincidence since a lot of pop stars seem to like to use butterflies as symbolism nowadays, but just something I noticed! |
previews are really strong for me. I really love listening to her voice without too much autotune. some of the songs feel very fresh, I'm pretty sure I'll listen to this release a lot!

Kuu says this was her last work day as a 37 year old. FNS is by Fuji TV, so she probably prerecorded her performance this time. The HMV in Narita renewed the big Kuu display again and made a big panel with birthday messages from fans (and a book out of it they gonna give her). Sex doesn't sell as it used to, so I don't think new acts would be that successful doing something like that.
The industry in general was in another place when it came to selling sex. During the early to mid 00s there were Britney and Christina, and that had some impact in Japan as well. MAX had an extreme change of image (imo) from their past releases to LOVE SCREW, and the lyrics are quite steamy. It was a flop single tho. It was released less than a year before Crazy 4 U, the start of her "erokakkoi" image. I wouldn't be surprise to see that it had some impact in Kumi's decision to go for that route, because I do think Kumi is quite a MAX fan (some of her auditions where covers of MAX songs, like Seventeen and Give me a Shake). Jewel of Jewels is full of bops btw. After the erokkakoi boom, some artists explored the sexy style more. By 2006 Goto Maki changed her image from the regular idol to her Glass no Pumps, and then SOME BOYS! TOUCH with lyrics that are quite sexy as well. She was the closest to a "Kumi clone" I think, no shade. I love her How To Use Loneliness album. Tanimura Nana was also had an image change, funny enough it was right after Kumi's scandal. Her first two singles were very girl next door, but then it came "JUNGLE DANCE". haha Sadly she never took off, her only album is a single compilation basically. Sowelu also tried at some point, don't know a lot about her career but Let ME Lead U will forever be a bop. The last two that I think tried to do the sexy thing but had problems were HYNA, with "TARATIKA", and Chiaki Takahashi, with "Konya Wa CHUPA RICO". Both only had one official single. I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting a lot of other female artists, but these where the ones that I could remember right now. For today's standards I think this type of music and style is outdated and not cool, I don't remember anyone trying and having success after 2012. So yeah, to some degree, nobody does it like her. |

Yeah, Jpop always had some tracks that have a more sexy style. Even Seiko Matsuda did with It's Style '95. Also, you can't talk about sexy songs and sexy image without talking about Linda Yamamoto, which I believe is also a big inspiration for Kumi.

@RainbowFive She seems to like this type of song a lot, personally I'm over it. For most heavy rap based songs I have to get used to for a while before even enjoying them, I still don't care that much for songs like WATCH OUT, Insane, WHO.
I still don't care for Killer monsteR, let's see if it changes my mind tomorrow. At this point I would rather get the CD-only for the release, puff is just not DVD material and since I noticed the clip-in hair extension on XXKK, it kinda ruined the PV for me lol. |

@RainbowFive The video is beautiful indeed, I just think the song doesn't match the image that much, she's looking soft for most of the video. I think Alarm would be a better choice, but either way she still looks very good.

New info from her FC.
Besides the Killer MonsteR Pv premiering on youtube today, it's also going to be released digitally November 20! And Kuu is doing a youtube live starting 9 pm JST on November 21st! The interviewer is listening to (parts of?) all the songs of the minis with Kuu and they gonna talk about her thoughts about them. Quote:

The song itself is so so so soooo good imo, I love it. I have some issues with the music video tho. I think it was on purpose, but that ever-moving camera bothers me, and the way it's shot at weird angles, like 45º at her instead of straight into her, also breaks the magic of the scenes cause you see the graffiti wall is not that big and it's just a studio... idk, looks amateur-ish to me. Also the choreo. I hate it, it's so slow and weird, it lacks energy, and Kuu didn't seem to be in a peak of energy as well. Hope it works better live than it did on the video. And gotta add she looked gorgeous all the way through.

I really love Killer MonsteR, the song, the cyberpunk look and the dance moves are very easy to remember and suit the melody, I've been listening to it on repeat since yesterday.
Every time I try to sign up to the global Koda Gumi, I put ALL my details in to keep getting told 'sorry, the site is too crowded right now', so I try again another time, and get told the same thing. It literally won't let me sign up, and now I feel like just giving up trying to be honest cause it's getting incredibly frustrating. I wanted to sign up to buy the FC edition but I guess I'll have to buy it from the Mu-Mo playroom link someone posted before instead. :/ Quote:

The most interesting thing in the first part of the youtube live, for angeL, is that she owns RUN since 2018 already.
It's one of the cases where she thought it didn't fit back then but great now for her 20th anniversary, so she purposely kept it. Have to properly watch the monsteR part later. One of the best things certainly was the interviewer wearing a Koda Gumi shirt and speaking so fondly of her, hahaha. EDIT: Shortly checked the end of the live as well. They're not only going to stream the Tokyo dates of the tour on mu-mo, but also recording for a DVD release! |

Avex is in no position to drop Kumi and Ayu, or any act who can still tour and give them some sort of income. The only thing I could see it happening is avex dropping rhythm zone, which I'm not even sure if RZ is still a thing since its website doesn't work anymore.

Kumi released two effin expensive FC albums this year plus she held an arena tour and sold lots of goodies, I'm pretty sure she provided to avex one of the biggest incomes of the year lol Plus, she's selling less than she used BUT for sure she is selling more than many older solo singers, like Miliyah, BENI and such. I think she's safe. Saying her name and ayu's as if they were to be dropped was a clear bait.
I'd worry about avex having less budget for her next projects rather than Kumi being dropped, so I'm kinda expecting 2021 to be a year with fewer releases and more concert-driven, a la 2016. Maybe a residence/tour project. |

For most older singers it is often their decision to go separate ways, turn independent or looking for another label. Not everything is about maximum income, even if it is the biggest part. There are also friendships or some kind of other bonds betweens artist and their labels. Eve if it is just mutual respect 8especially after 10 years +) chill. |
It's not different from a company not renewing a contract, but I personally don't remember any case of that happening in the jmusic industry where it had an official statement or something.
I doubt sifow & mini still have avex contracts lol, maybe Suzuki Ami out of respect. |
They’ll cut employees before artists, particularly the ones (mentioned in the article) who were around during the heyday. Their salaries are probably way way way higher than any of the new staff, possibly more than the new staff would ever see lol, just due to the fact that they could afford to give major promotions back then.
However, it’s still sad to see. But like the article mentioned, Avex failed to evolve with the times... For instance, Avex should’ve monetized their full music videos 10 years ago but only got around to it in the past few for their more famous acts. I have an acquaintance who works at Sony Music and he told me Avex is the least popular major label at the moment, and that they’re having a lot of issues. :-/ In fact he said “Avex is over” lol. |
