New digital single 'Mask' out November 18th, 2022
New Single "Mask" will be released on November 18(Fri)!
＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝◇ The digital single "Mask" will be released on November 18 (Fri), preceding the release of their first full-length original album in six years, which is currently in production. This is the first time in 12 years that they have come together to present a sad yet powerful message song. Expect this song to be a great hit on an autumn night! We will also be releasing information on our original full-length album at a later date! Please look forward to it! The "first time in 12 years" portion seems to refer to working with someone since then... it looks like from who she's worked with since then, it might be Noriyuki Makihara who last worked on Sweet Season! This single seems to be the one she was just recording and did the handsome manlyish photoshoot with Kazutaka Nakamura for! |

Interesting !!! Can't wait for more info about the album but I hope we will have more than 10 songs cause there are already a lot of singles (23rd monster, non fiction, summer again, now mask and maybe dreamed a dream ?)

Wonder what kind of theme it has. Is it medical mask or the mask with a smile to hide your real emotions. Though I know ayu almost always choose titles completely random

It just occur to me that her past releases revealed the title and single cover together. For this, she didn’t which kinda makes the wait torturing and teasing it as a sad song and good music video

In the recent muraayu video ayu spoke about Mask. I asked a girl who translates a lot of Perfume, BiSH videos if she could translate it for me and she kindly did it.
“The song’s called ‘MASK.’ It’s about the mask you put on & the so-to-speak mask of modern times, and crossing over both sides. I wanted to create that kind of theme for the both of them. It’s because you simply can’t express with a mask that it has become difficult to convey facial expressions; like a work of art. Everyone being kind is something that there’ll never be enough of, but there’s no such thing as a life that’s that perfect. While I generally don’t like when singles and albums use the same photo shoot, I honestly wouldn’t mind at all if the album cover was from the same photo shoot haha. It’s probably one of my favorite pictures of her in a long time. She looks mature and strong and human.
And I looove the preview. It’s a proper “vintage” sound imo. Instead of just sounding like she’s late on a trend (IE some of her EDM releases…), this one (so far) actually sounds like an intentional throwback. Of course it could change lol. But in any case, it’s a direction that aligns with my personal taste haha. |

While not exactly the same, I hear hints of Kahara Tomomi’s “I Believe” in the preview. Mostly just the tone and style (is it staccato?) of the piano maybe? There’s also some layering happening which I personally love. It’s very Komuro, but also very Ayu in regards to her winter songs at least (the layering I mean haha).
It’s also interesting how this is specifically mentioning “crossroad”—in that that was the last song Komuro had done both the composition and arrangement. To me, that’s still probably one of the best Komuro song in her discography, but I also wonder if that means he had far less involvement in the other ones? (Were they just stock tracks that existed in his catalogue that she bought?) And by mentioning “crossroad”, I wonder if Ayu also feels this will be just as strong a song? |

Woohoo! I wasn't expecting much as the two last singles are not really my cup of tea (I am not a suckers for Kpop EDM type of songs) but TK, i love his melodies and crossroads was sublime! I am suprised by the preview i was expecting a ballad, but i love the keyboard in it.

i am OBSESSED with this teaser… i’m gonna assume she’s going for a more house / dance inspired song with this new album which i am totally here for!! my only issue with the snippet is the mixing sounds maybe a bit off. but it’s not really a huge deal for me.
but yes i was originally expecting this to be a ballad, i was surprised when i clicked on the preview and it the house-style keyboard started playing!! i’m not disappointed, just kinda shocked… she really subverted all expectations with this one… i know she described this track as powerful and emotional, and i definitely think that could still be the case. she’s done emotional dance songs many times in the past (ie. appears, fairyland, snowy kiss) so i’m really excited to see what she has come up with this time and she looks absolutely gorge in the photoshoot, i’m loving the references to loveppears’ cover in the heels of its anniversary. ayu’s visuals are top tier! |

quintessential globe sound. probably found on TK's cutting room floor in the early 2000s...
all of TK's songs sound exactly like this. he never deviates from his formula. and ayu's IIIUUUuuuIIIIIUUUUUHHH~~~ sounds exactly like keiko back in the day... which bothers me a lot. looks like we're in for a very dated globe & keiko emulation and nothing more. well, that's the first impression at least. at least summer again gave me a proper song I kept on replay :) |

The preview is okay. It sounds like it will be generic but I have liked a lot of her work with TK, generic or not, so long as her vocals are decent. I'm more concerned about her possibly using the baby voice here which makes me cringe so much that it won't have any replay value. I really hope she won't use it.
