The Next Generation Of One Hit Wonders??

What new artists recently coming out do you think will be one hit wonders?? could be american, japanese, whatever...

I'd definitely have to say Fountains Of Wayne... They had a hit with "Stacy's Mom", I just don't see them having another hit... unless maybe they came out with another single titled "Stacy's Dad" :laugh

Corybobory 9th February 2004 05:51 AM

lol "Stacy's dad, has got it going... bad..."

M_aria 13th February 2004 08:13 AM

I am hoping that Evanescence will dissapear soon...
But, it's still to soon to tell with most other artists. However, I'm thinking that Jason Mraz (is that how you spell his last name!?) might be on the hit list, I've heard of him for a while but i've only actually heard one song.
Is it just me, or do most of the artists that you'd normally think are going to be one hit wonders seem to be sticking around longer than expected?
But, there is the TWO hit wonder domain...

jerms 13th February 2004 09:55 PM

lol..evanescense cant be a one-hit wonder..they've had like 3 hit singles already.

Um, Fountains of Wayne has been around for quite a while. So, they aren't new OR one hit wonders..

Also, I wish that Evanesence would fade away because I hate them so much.. Amy Lee's voice makes me want to curl up in a fetal position and slowly die. -.-;

As jerms said, they can't be one-hit wonders, but I wish they'd just.. GO AWAY.

:curse

Please, my ears need to stop bleeding from hearing them all the time.. :weep

Chrono 14th February 2004 02:39 AM

oh well, you got those in Hong Kong also.... but somehow after like the second single, they actually get some fans, and tend to stay in the showbiz.. damnit

they have the quality of one hit wonders, but still score hit after hit. oh well, i guess that if your daddy is rich enough, you can just let him buy your fans (-> yes, im talking about Juno Mak.)

Yeah, I second that ;)

Corybobory 19th February 2004 04:20 AM

I like Amy Lee's voice, it's just the style of music isn't my cup of tea...

tl1029530921 19th February 2004 04:22 AM

i dun see y so many ppl dont like evanessence. I like her voice...altho its kinda....."thin"..?

AfanforXX 19th February 2004 02:06 PM

anyone with a name like Amy Lee should NOT be allowed to become famous, it sounds like some hick-redneck girl. I third that Evenescense thing too, their music sounds like they try too hard, and the fact that they turned against the community that supported them in their early days (the christian music community) also turns me off.

sxesven 19th February 2004 08:36 PM

That Jason Mraz seems like a one-hit-wonder to me... god that stuff is so lame. Other than that, i wouldnt really know because Im not too informed on hitlists and such.

Fun fact: Did you know that, technically, Jimi Hendrix was a one-hit-wonder too?

Chrono 19th February 2004 09:50 PM

well, true... nut you have one-hit-wonders that last, and you have one-hit-wonders that don't

:laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh :roflmao :laugh

That redneck thing made me giggle.

And yes, they try too hard..especially to be goth. I'm sick of all these magazines calling them "goth rock" and "metal".. Do these people even listen to music at all?

>_O

That's pretty funny... :roflmao

Seems to be Amy Lee is getting all the recognition and the band is kinda left out... I think they took advantage of the whole Linkin Park craze... I think their music is kinda similar. they aren't a bad group though IMO... Just leave them be :rolleyes

I hate Avril and GC and all those "fake rock" groups or whatever you call them... but there is really nothing you can do about it.

Actually Jason Mraz performs a lot live moreso than most people think. He generated most of his fanbase at first through live performances, then became more exposed when he released his 2 top-40 singles (just like Maroon 5 did). He is one of the few performers who is awesome live by singing solely with his acoustic guitar in the background. So even if you don't here him on the radio much, he is not a one hit wonder.

I think the "new" Kelis will be a 1-hit wonder. Even though she has been around for a long time, "Milkshake" is the only song of hers that has had A LOT of exposure. Plus last week's Saturday Night Live proved that the "new" Kelis can't sing for beans. Another 1-hit wonder, and I'm probably wrong about this, is DJ Sammy and the song "Heaven." Ever since "Heaven" became overplayed I never heard a new mix by DJ Sammy that was as exposed as "Heaven" was. Remember Samantha Mumba? She had 2 top-40 singles and then suddenly disappeared. Oh, and Daniel Beddingfield became a 2-hit wonder, but I know he was in the bad car accident so that's excusable.

People I wish would go away:
Hilary Duff (this shows that 12yr old Disney fans can make anyone famous even if the person has no talent)
Jessica Simpson (she takes the dumb blonde routine too far)
Beyonce Knowles (too many reasons to list)
Kelly Osbourne
Girl groups that try to be "punk rocker-ish"
Sean Paul (I can't ever understand a word he says)

AfanforXX 20th February 2004 02:29 PM

Hey now! Jessica Simpson can sing, it's just that they give her horrible songs. I 2nd all the other people on your list though, but you forgot Lindsay Lohan *shrug*

jiayulam 20th February 2004 08:18 PM

Outkast!

sxesven 21st February 2004 01:18 PM

Chibinina, you're totally correct, but Jason Mraz has had just one hit over here before, Holland, so the situation is of course somewhat different. So technically, he could still become a one-hit wonder over here ^^

OutKast can't be a one-hit wonder. They had a lot of hits and have been around for 10+ years.

Chrono 21st February 2004 01:45 PM

i know one! Jamai! everyone from holland should know what i mean :D

sxesven 21st February 2004 03:37 PM

:laugh lmao

But... sorry... he actually had TWO hits :rolleyes.

That's right. Outkast has been around for a long time and has had hits like "Sorry Ms. Jackson" and a few others that I can't think of right off the top of my head. (I just woke up. :P) I know some people who love the songs "Hey Ya!" and "I Like The Way You Move" have never heard of Outkast before and are surprised to know that they've been in the business for a while. I assume since Rap/R&B/Hip-Hop is making a very big comeback in the Top-40 world, more people are becoming exposed to lesser known artists from genres other than bubblegum pop. Kelis's situation is the same. If "Milkshake" was never played on Top-40 stations, the song would have never been as popular as it is now and Kelis wouldn't have had so much exposure recently.

Going back to Jason Mraz, the February 2004 edition of Teen People (with Orlando Bloom on the cover) has him featured as one of the new rising stars of the present day. They mentioned how he has been around for a while mostly playing in coffeehouses in California. I know his "Live At Java Joe's" album (that you can only buy through his website) from 2001 features a couple of songs that made it onto his live album and also sound better than the studio versions. So I still don't think he is or will be a 1 hit wonder in the near future.

Jessica Simpson -- I'm not denying that she can't sing, but now she's using the "Dumb Blonde Routine" to gain popularity. Her new album hasn't sold very well in comparison to her last 2, and Nick's album completely flopped because of very little promotion. Now her "Chicken of the Sea" act made her one of the media's top focus, made more people tune in to Newlyweds, and even earned her a future job (as a show host?) on ABC. And the sad part is now she purposely uses the "Dumb Blonde Routine" every time she's on TV. Shouldn't she be focusing on her music career instead of making herself look like she has an IQ of 10 every day?

Jamai makes me laugh. :P

sxesven 21st February 2004 04:41 PM

Jamai makes you laugh... that's good ^^ for us Dutch people... it's just plain embarrassing. I was jsut having this discussion with some classmates of mine the other day. Holland has anything, musically, from classical composers to deathmetal bands, and good ones too, but still we SUCK at making popmusic. It's a miracle.

About Jason Mraz, I did not know all this about him, the only thing I've seen or heard about him is his [latest, I guess] video. We'll see how he will continue his career ^^ It's good tho, that, like you mentioned, he "has been around for a while mostly playing in coffeehouses in California". I have respect for artist who actually build up something theirselves, starting out writing their own songs and playing gigs for crowds with less than 50 ppl in it, and ending up as still sympathetic popstars playing for 1000s of ppl.

Jessica Simpson - no comment.

Chrono 22nd February 2004 01:24 AM

Jamai will rule the world :sdevil

AfanforXX 22nd February 2004 06:32 PM

who is this jamai guy?

Chrono 22nd February 2004 07:27 PM

Jamai is the one who won the dutch Idols competition. some weirdo. small, fat, with tons of ugly glasses.

after he released his first single, he started saying he was gay, to get more gays supporting him. Then he was losing his female fanbase and suddenly he wasn't gay anymore, but bisexual. and up until now, still no second single ^^

The first time I ever saw and heard him was when World Idol came on:

http://www.worldidol.tv/bios_jamai.asp

I like the glasses (lol), but he reminds me of Jack Osbourne for some odd reason. Oh, and this part from the site bio "Jamai can now visit his own wax statue at Madame Tussaud's in Amsterdam" made me fall out of my chair laughing. :laugh Why can't Ayu have her own wax statue? :roflmao Wax statues for all!

Snippet from the site: "Not many performing artists can look back at a dazzling career debut like that of 17 year old Jamai Loman, winner of Dutch Idols 2003. Since his smashing victory earlier this year he has grown to become one of Holland's biggest celebrities. In the future we can expect more song writing from the talented, young star."

Chrono 23rd February 2004 12:36 AM

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!! smashing victory?! Holland's biggest celebrity?! hahahaha, i'm sorry, it's just, i can't stop laughing ^^

Jamai, is the redefination of one-hit-wonder.

more songs from the talented..hahahahahahahahaaha

sxesven 23rd February 2004 02:11 PM

Like I already said, SECOND SINGLE. So no one-hit wonder. I mean, he's pathetic and lame and what-not, but not a one-hit wonder.

It's true and sad too about that Wax statue tho. More terrifying... the runner-up has a wax statue too.

Wait... we can 'expect more song WRITING'?! I'm curious...

I'm probably mistaken, but wasn't Jessica Simpson the same way? Y'know... not relying on scantily-clad outfits and whatnot? I remember her debut a few years ago and she doesn't seem too much like the girl I remember hearing about, but I could be wrong... :think

M_aria 2nd March 2004 01:29 PM

hmm, that Jamai guy is kinda cute....

Actually, Jessica Simpson's new album is doing VERY well. It's already been ceritifed platinum (1 million copies sold, and this was months ago), and her last album only went gold.... The funny thing is, she's never really had a huge single hit...

But then again there are artists whose singles do better than their albums (Mariah Carey) and artists whose albums do better than their singles (Britney Spears now, Jessica Simpson, Nelly Furtado, etc.)

i wish the darkness would go away... that song is catchy for a little bit but then it just gets to you... especially after listening to it 5978236495681 times
