my translation (sorry if its not perfect):

Ayumi Hamasaki mild loss of hearing:
Once wanted to withdraw from the musical world

Ayumi, showing her "fragrant"/beautiful shoulder to play the role as a "flower fairy maiden" on the cover of her latest single <moments> , although has both success in her business and love, but actually has painstaking noone knows about. On the NHK television special report featuring ayumi <Ayumi Hamasaki... despair and decision of light and shadow 25 year old>, speaks frankly about the sudden outburst of the symptoms of the loss of hearing problems in 2000, causing the mild 'sequela' or aftermath of this hearing problem. In 2001 when she participated in the stressful and humongous pressure of 'war' against releasing an album the same day as utada hikaru, this pressure so high she once thought of retiring.

The filming and production crew started to follow ayumi closely since 1999, and after 4 years of hardwork, the clip was finally edited and finished, released yesterday in Japan. The highlight of the program was ayumi's bitter and sad matters as she climbed to the throne of the japanese musical world.

According to Ayumi, in 2000 suddenly in the period of her concert she suffered from the ear loss problems, and was forced to cancel her appearance. At the time, she felt like "simply the bolt from the blue", worring about the end of her career and stardom dream. Fortunately at the end it did not affect her career, but the sequela /consequences of the disease appeared, sometimes she cannot hear sounds clearly.

Until March of 2001, Ayumi faced another test, as she released her album on the same day as her longtime rival Utada Hikaru. At the time the media paid a lot of attention to this 'life and death battle', causing Ayumi to have so much pressure she couldn't breathe [metaphorically], and the word 'retirement' flashed across her mind. Ayumi says "Although I dispelled the idea afterwards, the present pressure was still very big. What I wore, what I did, every little thing was noticed by and paid attention to, sometimes I really want to leave and do nothing."

In addition since her debut, Ayumi seldom mentioned her hometown Fukuoka Fukuoka. However, last month she especially made a trip there with the production crew, introducing her elementary school and the beach her father often brought her to when she was little.

I hate the whole Hikki va. Ayu crap. Record label squables really take toles on the actual artists.

Unimatrix Prime™ 12th April 2004 08:48 PM

This sounds like the recent NTV event when she considered retiring due to Hikki's "Distance" being sold on the same day as "A BEST"

Ayufan11 12th April 2004 08:49 PM

Wow.... Hikki and ayu should kiss and make up! :D .... o.o

silentscreamer 12th April 2004 08:57 PM

poor ayu T___T so much pressure!! hope her hearing gets better!!

pankanshe 12th April 2004 09:44 PM

aww T.T

so did ayu win or hikki?
im guessing hikki

Shiso 12th April 2004 09:47 PM

Poor Ayu :(

CT_Cool 12th April 2004 09:54 PM

poor ayu hope her hearing get better :(

FancySN 12th April 2004 10:19 PM

Everybody has problems in life.
I'm just glad Ayu wasn't defeated by them. :)

dCxAyumi1 12th April 2004 10:30 PM

O.o the many pressures of being a big star like ayumi-chan ><
well, at least she is able to handle all of this......but geez, she has to take it easier on herself. such a toll on a person's mental health is really debilitating >< :( :( :cry :eek
and yet...ayumi-chan rises above all of that and still continues to make such excellent music for her fans...wow...she is one to be commended for her diligence and perserverance! GO Ayumi!!!!!!! :D :thumbsup :thumbsup

The article is new .. April 13, 2004 from hong kong Mingpaonews.com ... and i guess we just heard of this now because Ayu told us in the NTV program thing ...

and yes it's the moments single

Larisa-chan 12th April 2004 11:56 PM

Ayu's pretty tough to put up with all the pressure she faces in the media. I'm not surprised she's loss some of her hearing.. she's probably around loud music daily for live concerts/shows, PVs, CMs, other promotions etc. The Hikaru vs. Ayu ordeal is ridiculous too. The media always hypes up something as a competition and then viciously attacks whom they deem a "failure" -.- I wonder what Ayu's reason was for *not* retiring.

openingRUN 13th April 2004 12:21 AM

i'd like to see this television special

LEOyumi 13th April 2004 12:26 AM

Poor Ayu. Hope she doesn't get affected by the media, and grow even stronger.

Interesting. I never knew how serious that ear infection was.

Thank you for the translation silentscreamer. It's very good :thumbsup

PinkSock 13th April 2004 12:39 AM

i had no idea she had an ear infection much less an infection that damaged her hearing!
woah.
I'd like to see this special too...
thanks for the article!

hiro 13th April 2004 12:54 AM

Hmmm.. maybe that explains why she goes off-key on certain performances.

Larisa-chan 13th April 2004 01:42 AM

ohh, it was an ear infection that caused the loss of hearing?? oh man...

Gravitation 13th April 2004 01:47 AM

from a personal persepctive ..i think Hikki and Ayu should collaborate more...both of them have great voices..and just competing with them seems to put them to such a waste.

Mrs. JD 13th April 2004 01:51 AM

Aw, poor Ayu...I hate the press and all that Hikki vs. Ayu bull*****...:mad

Hikki's Distance sold better, but A Best was Ayu's best-selling album. Over 4 million copies. So maybe the competition was a good thing?

Awww... poor Ayu. I feel so bad for her. And her ear. :comfort

Coelacanth 13th April 2004 03:31 AM

I want to make her ear feel better... I have the secret... ;) :evillaugh

On the Hikki and Ayu thing...

NO, they should not collaborate... Their voices are wayyyy too different... I doubt it would be a good song... Hikki has too much soul in her voice... I don't see why you would want Ayu to sing with her... :shrug

charlie3223 13th April 2004 03:33 AM

is the AYU VS Hikki real?
or fabricated nonsense.

I'm sure it was fabricated by the media and "made" real because of the media.

syntherella 13th April 2004 05:24 AM

I'm partially deaf in my right ear myself, so I tend to miss sounds if the source is facing me the wrong way. But... I really had no idea Ayu had such problems. Can't really tell from the standard of her music, heh. On one hand, I'm glad that she's still making music, on the other, I really wonder how much more pain she can take.

I agree that rivalry between artistes is always a sensitive topic and that it'd be nice for Ayu and Utada Hikaru to be good friends. Somehow, though, that image is a bit scary and ten times as unnatural. It's still good they're both making good music! I like some of Utada's songs. They're the queens of separate territories, in my opinion... Pop and R&B. Then I think Amuro Namie would be the queen of Hip-Hop now. Er. I don't know. But still... Come to think of it, does Ayu have any fellow Japanese artistes as friends? Is she lonely...?

I was also wondering about the mention of Ayu's father. I used to read somewhere that Ayu grew up in a single-parent family as her father left her mother when she was still young. I also read that she doesn't know who her father is, doesn't remember his face and isn't interested in reconciling with him. Does this mean Ayu has a father? Wow... To think I've spent all my years in Ayu fandom with such a distorted image of Ayu's past...

Thanks for the article!!!

silentscreamer 13th April 2004 05:43 AM

yea i've always thought that ayu never knew her father ... how can she remember him bringing her to the beach then?

hmmmmmmm .. haha ..

ddr trent 13th April 2004 06:37 AM

^^
oh yah. i thought the only thing she remembers is him leaving the house.

thats so cool. the match up between those 2

squirty 13th April 2004 06:38 AM

I'm surprised she still has as much hearing as she does. It's hard to loose your hearing though, especially because you can't regrow the small hairs that help with your hearing back. &This whole "rivalry" is probably false. I'm sure that there is competition.. between record labels.

ayumin 13th April 2004 06:58 AM

She doesn't care about the Utada battle result at all.
It's merely despair toward Avex.

lovia 13th April 2004 01:51 PM

i guess this new isn't really new at all, i remember hearing it during 2000.... quite true it is the record company's compeition, but i guess it really bring out the best of the singers within..... but i guess it is really harsh on ayu at that time and all the pressure she is going through... yah.. i feel sad for ayumi... T_T.... sobz... hope ayumi will get better now...

i never like hikki music and her voice so i do not think they can ever collarborate man! =p besides both of them do write their own songs.. and given ayumi's character i do not think ayumi will just sing the song if it is written by someone else....

Nessa 13th April 2004 02:04 PM

If Ayu and Hikki did a song together, I would cry. Hikki's voice is 5 million times more powerful then Ayu's. Plus, Record labels in Japan are like modern day Shoguns/warlords. They wouldn't share the money earned on a combined CD if their future depended on it.

Poor ayu, my friend who plays the piano a lt also has this same symptomps. Hope she'll get better soon.

The rivalry of Ayu and Hikki have been brought up all the time,, in a radio in my city, they held an Ayu Vs. Hikki competetion. The people decided who should won by sending text messages,,(Lot of them bashed Ayu's voice v_v).Eventually she won by 58% of the vote.

I believe that Ayu has the strenght to keep on doing what's good for her. I support Ayu all the way!!! GO AYU

..:DisarO:.. 13th April 2004 07:31 PM

:scry Poor Ayu, she's getting crazy with this all! I don't like to see ppl that I like suffering, but this is the price that sometimes super stars pay... We can't help, just wish her better days :thumbsup

:comfort

ayumylove? 13th April 2004 11:54 PM

AHHH! ayu's gonna quit soon? I hope she continues and finishes this battle or whatever it is. AYU! WE LOVE YOU! you can do it! she's such a hard worker. awwww poor ayu. she doesn't deserve all this pressure with everything she does. but if she does decide to quit, i wish her the happiest life ever. she deserves every bit.

hanabinokisetsu 14th April 2004 01:39 PM

I also saw this report on the Singapore's chinese newspaper 2day

kournikova 15th April 2004 10:44 AM

sorry to hear that... im hoping its getting better soon... ^^ i think its getting better since in a museum she almost never do out of tune... ^^ and about her rivalry... i think both of them arent rival... ^^ but both of them are competiting... ^^ but in distance vs a best... i think ayu won that... i dunno

miruku 16th April 2004 08:18 AM

poor ayu

Lumix 16th April 2004 11:29 AM

I hope ayu gets better. But I still think she could use a good break.

_Zora_ 20th April 2004 03:11 AM

sorry to hear about this

i've had some loss of hearing too... i am lucky i can still keep in tune and in pitch, but sometimes when i play it all sounds a little blurry... its hard to explain. but i can understand what she is going through.

the best treatment that has worked is to not keep loud sounds/music close ... but i guess that is impossible for ayumi when she does her concerts...ayu my heart goes out to you and i really hope you get better soon!
