Utada MTV Europe Promotion

Quite a bit of MTV promotion for Utada in Europe! :D

Japan’s biggest pop star is about to start making waves in the West. If you haven’t already heard of 21-year-old Utada then all that’s about to change with her signing to Island/Def Jam. Utada was born in Manhattan to Japanese parents who were heavily involved in the music industry – her mother is a traditional Japanese singer and her father a musician and producer. She spent her childhood jetting between New York and Tokyo and at just 11 recorded her first song. By 13 she had recorded a whole album of tracks in English, but a year later a producer at Toshiba EMI persuaded her write in Japanese.
The result was the biggest selling album in Japanese history, an album that shifted 10 million copies and held onto the No.1 spot for six weeks. Her next two long players also entered the Japanese chart at the top spot, as did the DVD of her first tour. In 2002 she took part in the world’s largest ever web chat, with more than a million devotees logging on in an hour. Now MTV can exclusively debut Exodus, Utada’s first English language album, featuring Timbaland and Jon Theodore from the Mars Volta. You can listen to the album here for free before its release on October 24.

Great interview through MTV Netherlands... She sounds a lot less nervous with her English this time...

And from MTV France http://www.mtv.fr/jhtml/art/MaExclu.jhtml?a=3337

Cheers!

Thanks for this!

ohsixthirty 13th October 2005 03:27 PM

wow, they seem much more hyped for it than the u.s. did. mtv scarcely mentioned her here as far as i know.

FoObY 13th October 2005 06:00 PM

go hikki! I still think some songs on Exodus sound boring, but I want to get the UK version because of the remixes.

Raleigh 13th October 2005 07:18 PM

Hope she does better in Europe. Maybe she has a better chance since Europe is more open to different music kinds imo.

ohsixthirty 13th October 2005 09:36 PM

maybe she'll get big in europe and then her popularity will cross back over to the u.s. :D

sugoiguywithhair 13th October 2005 10:23 PM

Glad to see that they're promoting her right for once. The 7 min. interview was great. ^^; Even though it's been a while since Exodus has been out, we rarely get to see her talk in english still. (Says a lot about her American promotion.)

The promotion does seem to be better. It'd be great if You Make Me Want To Be A Man made the UK Top 10!

Yeah, definately don't mind that! Fancy seeing Utada over here for a change :P Plus it's a song I like :)

The music style suits Europe better than USA.

Which album sold 10 millions?

"First Love". It's the best selling Japanese album ever. It's 10 millions of copies shipped, it actually sold 7 650 000 :P

elepop 14th October 2005 12:52 AM

"First Love", of course! It's the first Japanese song I ever heard!

Mirai Noah 14th October 2005 05:35 PM

I'm glad that Hikki is getting better promotion in Europe than she did here. Go Hikki!

Kaiouforever 14th October 2005 09:31 PM

Good luck to her indeed. I think it's sad how she got hardly any support over here. A friend of mine who used to be a DJ told me she actually came into their studio and wanted them to play Easy Breezy on the station, but they didn't want to. How messed up is that? I bought her Exodus album, and wish more people did too. Maybe we should all just suddenly order it and see what happens haha.

m-a-z-e 15th October 2005 10:51 AM

The promotion may look good but the single, 'You Make Me Want To Be A Man'?

It came out int he UK last Monday and I checked two HMVs, a Virgin megastore and a Music Zone and none of them had the single. HMV said they only ordered THREE copies, that's right, only THREE...so I reserved one on Monday 'cos there order was late...and..guess what...still no phone call 'cos the delivery hasn't arrived! I was furious, Utada wont get anywhere in the charts because of any complete balls up from the suppliers...

I remember hearing EXODUS wasn't in many shops in the US, right?..To begin with at least?

Utada on MTV.nl!

Utada on MTV.nl!

Oh boy!

I so hope she breaks through.

Dimi 15th October 2005 02:30 PM

Hopefully she is coming to Gemany. Would be great :) Although I'm not a big fan of her *g*

Mad_Cactuar 15th October 2005 03:12 PM

wow!!! Promotion!!! Utada is gonna be big!!

AyuGAME 19th October 2005 11:22 AM

wow..she looks really serious to maintain her carier
good luck utada

bluegie 28th October 2005 11:27 AM

I dun see the result will be different... EXODUS won't get a big hit in europe... You gotta go lots of promotions to let people know your existence. I dun live in UK, but how often do you see her on tv/radio show there? Everyone can guess the number... Must be less than 10.

And I only love her japanese music. Her japanese lyrics are much better than her English ones...

BENNIE-K 28th October 2005 11:41 AM

Utada didn't even reach the top 40 btw. Meh.

Cyria 28th October 2005 09:02 PM

That's sad. I was hoping she'd do well.
