Pride = Crucified?

So I was showing my boyfriend the video for Pride and, like many others, he said the song sounded so familiar. It took him a while, but he got the song. It was a one-hit-wonder from the 90s called Army of Lovers, and the song was called "Crucified." The chords and notes of the chorus are almost identical.

Larisa-chan 4th December 2005 08:25 AM

Well, damn o.o the chorus is nearly identical. What the heck :(

everlastingRAINBOW 4th December 2005 08:31 AM

I'm pissed at Ayu, she's not high on my list right now...

makie_7 4th December 2005 08:41 AM

umm yes, you're right, it's almost the same....

Raleigh 4th December 2005 08:43 AM

Many songs sound like other songs. I don't really mind myself.

Damaximus 4th December 2005 08:47 AM

Yes a lot of songs sound alike others. But this one is surprisingly so. I guess now we know how the composer came up with the tune

At least I can still say I prefer Pride

Tasked 4th December 2005 08:58 AM

To be fair, don't be pissed at Ayu; she didn;t compose the song. GEO of SWEETBOX composed the song.

For real :x and people are taking things way too serious. I think people here should be prescribed medication for high blood pressure.

edit: That is the most awful song I've ever heard. I don't hear the part were it sounds like Pride. "It's raining cats and dogs."

Exactly what I was about to say. And you can't expect Ayu to know EVERY SINGLE SONG ever released before actually singing a song written for her by someone else.

Haha I can just see how this will get blown out of proportions...maybe used by S.H.E. fans to retort what happened before. :P

Thanks for bringing this up though, 'cause I too thought "Pride" sounded familiar...although I've never heard of this song either. O_o

I agree!

Pride did sound familiar to me when I first heard it, but I know I've never even heard of the song "Crucified".

Well, you know, the world's going to run out of original tunes one day. :shrug

lotusoka 4th December 2005 09:26 AM

I'm a fan of Army of Lovers... Crucified is a good song, but it is on almost all of their albums... with the exception of like... 2.

No big deal with the compostion, it doesn't sound TOO similar to me.

SheFliesHigher 4th December 2005 09:32 AM

When I first heard the chorus of Pride, I had this weird feeling that I had heard it before. I'm not familiar with this Crucified song, but the chorus sure sounds similar.

Surreal 4th December 2005 09:35 AM

No wonder Pride sounded familiar. Anyway....I don't think there's a need to be pissed at Ayu...for reals.

Sweer 4th December 2005 09:40 AM

Pride = crucify thats what I first thought about it as well when I heard it
but I couldnt find any file of it.
but I dont think this is any ripoff its just a weird coincidence and I never liked crucify unlike Pride

Echiko 4th December 2005 09:44 AM

Daaang similar indeed :O

hana_sanctuary 4th December 2005 09:56 AM

Well, we know we can't hold Ayu herself accountable... however, what will happen if Army of Lovers found out about this? Do you guys think they'd try and press charges or something?

From what I can recall, artists have done those sort of things in the past ((and have run rampant with them in like the early 90s or something @_@ ))

emi♡ 4th December 2005 10:30 AM

mmm...its a chorus its probably going to sound familiar, i bet if you searched the entire world ou'd probably find like twenty other songs that all sound the same...i mean how many poassible combinations of notes can there be after 2000 years of music...

and of course like said above ayu didnt compose the song, and probably never even heard of that other band, i never had...and it seems...niether has anyone else except a few...as said, stop blowing things out of proportion and stop being so fickle...please...why are there some people that just turn on ayu...not to name anyone...there are going to be at least a dozen other people who will read this and put ayu on their crap list...

i think...nothing to worry about, let alone think about.

IRIS_intense 4th December 2005 10:33 AM

blame the composer!!Not AYU!!!hehe..but i don't mind..I even bet that song was released before i was born..So no biggie..and it doesnt actually sound so closely similar to PRIDE because PRIDE is SLOWER and Full of Emotion..
BTW..does anybody hav the full version of Crucified??

It wouldn't be Ayu's fault - it's GEO of Sweetbox since he is the one that composed it.

Edit: Sorry to repeat what has already been stated.

Raleigh 4th December 2005 11:24 AM

^ Exactly. I do not know why Ayu is to blame for something she did not do.

Qt Mashi 4th December 2005 11:43 AM

yup it sounds deadly similar...

it's GEO from Sweetbox after all...

dulceku 4th December 2005 12:10 PM

.... it think it is very same.... aww it was same with Will... anyway, she don't make melodies... is not her fault...

AyuGAME 4th December 2005 12:32 PM

i will hear it and give my judgement
but..i don't know but there is so many bad news around this month
especially her poor sales...
i just hate to know the fact that she get so many bad news

AyuGAME 4th December 2005 02:11 PM

the chorus is really similar..oh my god
i doubt that ayu know that she sing the same chorus part with the other song
the rest of the song is totally different but the chorus is really similar..the different is just the tempo..oh my god...
pride is better that crucified..but..oh my...i don't know what to say anymore
i feel really sad, poor ayu

kendelle 4th December 2005 02:32 PM

Does it really matter if they're simiilar? Like others have said earlier, there will eventually be no original songs left, and it's not like she ripped the whole tune, and is calling it her own...

Who can be bothered getting angry at a singer for having a tune similar to someone elses? I can't... XD And I like Pride best anyways. All that's happened is that she's taken a tune and re-vamped it to something better ^__^

Sweer 4th December 2005 03:15 PM

did anyone of you ever see the PV for crucified???
hahah that is sooo cheap and actually quite distgusting :P

Yukitora 4th December 2005 03:24 PM

Haha, i'm not supprised... Army of Lover's image kinda scare me to start with XD

I really don't like crucified.... the chorus' vocals sound horrible to me for some reason O_o But like, atleast Army of Lovers are getting attention through this little Ayu-related mishap!

Aisha_Angel 4th December 2005 03:54 PM

I thought the melody sounded familiar...but only b/c it reminded me of WONDERLAND meeting HOPE or PAIN...But I still love all three songs.

fεяnαndδ 4th December 2005 04:04 PM

0k i agree the ch0rus bein similar. we||... it's the sweetb0x guy/ga| w0rk anyway and the temp0 is different. anyway, crucified gives mE a creepy fee|in whi|e Pride gives mE a sad fee|in. A tota||y different c0ncept im0.

stardusties 4th December 2005 04:39 PM

a LOT of things can sound similar, I believethis is all coincidence,

minkAYuko 4th December 2005 07:04 PM

and I thought this thread was not here... it runs like a virus through ayu forums...

anyway... I have some suggestions:

like some1 in another forum said... it's a very common chord progression so...one chord takes to another. it just might be really a coincidence.

or

could it be possible that this guy/girl or whatever GEO of SWEETBOX had some involment in crucified??? even if it's an 90.s hit?

n_n

I said.

the angel song 4th December 2005 07:20 PM

wooow. The chorus's melody sounds like the chorus in "Pride", but that's it. Someone said "Pride" sounded more like "Once upon a December" from the Anastasia movie, and I hear that more. That type of chord descent is very popular actually...I don't see how some people can just dislike ayu for something like that...

Beyond the Sea 4th December 2005 07:27 PM

woah, it really does sound like pride~ how cool :)

hiro 4th December 2005 07:31 PM

So that's why the song sucks. It was ripped off a horrible song to beign with. hahhahahahah

kristen 4th December 2005 07:31 PM

Well, didn't something like this happen with Walking Proud too?

Lumix 4th December 2005 07:38 PM

Maybe GEO really loves this song and he copied melody for Pride and gospel idea for Bold & Delicious!!!

:D :D :D

hahaha yeah I've been searching for hours after hearing Pride the first time, but the only line in the lyrics I could remember (and even that took me some time) was crucify (<--- tada). and there was my mistake, since it was crucified and not crucify so I couldnt find it nowhere XD

I was sure the beat did come from somewhere, so I'm not surprised. She wrote the lyrics, so we should be happy that it was original on her part, she probably has never heard the other song before.

Well, it's really different so I can't say

~*Mabushii*~ 4th December 2005 11:45 PM

okay.. the begining sounds very much like part of pride. O.O;; although.. this song isn't very good the rest of it.. I deffinatly like how pride sounds in the part thats similar.
.. o.O;; it's scary you can actually sing pride in that part along with it..
ah well, maybe the composer is the same composer?.. and asked Ayu and she liked how it sounded but wanted it a little different?

indicatoto101 5th December 2005 12:21 AM

you guys have really good hearing cause I don't hear the resemblance. The two choruses sound pretty different to me. The chorus of crucified is pretty catchy though while the chorus of pride is a litte harder to remember. When I first heard pride, the piano intro reminded of a song I've heard before. Now that I've listened to crucifed, I can say it's not the song I was thinking of, like I said, I don't hear the resemblance. Could be classical Beethoven or some "old due who died a hundred years ago".

Ryoko 5th December 2005 03:06 AM

This type of thing happens often and usually not on purpose - a composer may come up with something and then someone tells them it has the same exact melody or chords from another song, so...

you can't blame Ayu. And if Pride does take excerpts from crucified, wouldn't in say so in the booklet? Just like with the song "Duty"?

SunshineSlayer 5th December 2005 05:14 AM

Well, it's not just similar. I think it is pretty obvious that GEO ripped the melody for Pride from this song. You can sing the lyrics to Pride over the lyrics to Crucified and it all fits - in order for that to happen, it would have to be an extreme coincidence. However it is completely not Ayu's fault. I doubt she has ever heard this song or even heard of the group. (I hadn't)

truehappiness 5th December 2005 05:19 AM

Me neither. Plus if it was the case, then it might've been credited like Memorial address was. :F

I want the official lyrics for that.. /slaps Ayu for not giving them out

Dreamland 5th December 2005 05:22 AM

blame nobody because its nobody's fault

Ayumi no Yume 5th December 2005 05:34 AM

Did anyone suggest that maybe they allowed ayu to use their music alike-ness crap?
Kinda like when an artist brings back an old song?
I Love rock and roll - Britney Spears? etc.

People jump to conclusions too much today. Freaking annoying.

I'm just waiting for someone to yell at you and say this is another one of those copy threads :rolleyes
It proabably already happened for all i know.

And yes, the song sounds kinda like Ayu's PRIDE, but think about it, it's quite different.
That goes to those who jump to conclusions and start hating/getting angry at ayu and crap.

I HATE that above all.

And dreamland's right.

Everyone has gotta find someone else to blame these days :rolleyes

Ryoko is also correct.
A composer may think of a nice tune, and it turns out they had heard it before, and not knowing it, they use it again.

HvnSntGurl 5th December 2005 06:23 AM

Ok the song is sort of similar. It's not anything to get all worked up over. Plus Pride sounds ten times better then that anyway.

apples 5th December 2005 06:37 AM

yeah, when i first heard it i was like, "this sounds like the anastasia song"

this song, "crucified" is not as good as ayu's, it's just terrible

i love Pride so much, i dont care if it did come from this or anything, it's different in it's own way and i love it.

fεяnαndδ 5th December 2005 01:57 PM

Crucified is baaad.

Pride is goood.

<3 <3 <3

Neo Daydream 5th December 2005 03:08 PM

OMG! itz like the exact same thing! >.< but itz GEO's fault, not Ayu! Ayu still rox

tomiko8 7th December 2005 09:37 PM

i just listned and its funny because when i originally heard it it sounded really familiar but things like this happen and to blame ayu is a bit out there besides she didnt come up w/ the tune just the lyrics.

Delirium-Zer0 7th December 2005 10:02 PM

I do think GEO probably did this by accident. It's an old enough song that it's likely GEO probably heard it ages ago and had the melody in his head for a long time. Tori Amos did the same thing with her song "hey Jupiter"... it sounds JUST like prince's "Purple Rain", and it was a total accident on her part. It happens with songwriters sometimes.

Sometimes a singer WILL write a song and by coincidence it'll sound like another song. The Rolling Stones' "Anybody Seen My Baby" has a melody in the chorus that's exactly the same as k.d. lang's "Constant Craving", and they had never heard the song before... when they heard the resemblance though, they decided to give k.d. lang a writing credit in their album and some of the royalties for the song. Very grown-up thing to do on their part, i think.

Everyone should know that if it has to do with Sweetbox than its more than likely going to be a sample/remake. That's almost a fact.

Coelacanth 8th December 2005 12:36 AM

Did you guys ever think that maybe GEO composed 'Crucified'? He did compose for Ace of Base and other groups... I think that he could have recycled the melody and used it for 'Pride'.

Yarumi 8th December 2005 01:06 AM

Well they do sound very similar...

But like alot of people have stated... this is a OLD song.. plus an America One Hit Wonder... it's VERY unlikely Ayu has ever heard this song! Must of us Americans have ever heard it ;)

Plus she didn't compose it herself... I still LOVE pride! If she started singing songs that were recent... like maybe recycled Hikki's chorus of "first Love" then that would be a little different :)

starr5245 8th December 2005 02:52 AM

Pride is strong and has Ayu's own meaning in it...Besides probably GEO was the one who took the idea from Crucified...Who knows...

I had my first listen-through of (miss)understood last night, and when I got to 'Pride' I was slightly shocked because I immediately recognized the 'Crucified' chorus! So I came here to AHS to see if anyone else had noticed the similarity, I'm glad I'm not the only one. :P
