Dead Threads

i have accidently bumped up old threads before (sorry!) and have been warned. But why cant old or "dead" threads be brought up again? It seems that sometimes, people also create new threads that are very similar to some older threads--and it looks like a waste of space. Also, if dead threads do have some interesting topics, why cant they be revived again? :(
finally, how do you know if a thread is "officially" dead?

Neo Daydream 22nd January 2006 11:52 PM

i don't kno i've wondered those things too...

ImpactBreaker 23rd January 2006 02:37 AM

Just use good sense. Some thread have clearly died out, when you think about reviving the thread you have to read every post carefully sometimes a question that was made in the thread has already been answered and there's no need to repeat it all over or even worse, ask the same question (that has already been answered in the thread) again just because you didn't read it carefully.
Other threads could actually be discussed for eternity though and reviving them when you feel like discussing isn't really a problem in my opinion. You just have to use the good sense whether an old thread would still be interesting to still be discussed or not.

ImpactBreaker, thanks for the clarification. I was wondering about this, too...since I've noticed several times that a lot of old threads were bumped up. I guess old threads of old news shouldn't be bumped up, since they are, well, old news. =\

Yeah, well, some threads shouldn't be brought up. But at the same time, i have found ones that would still interest people, and i believe there's nothing wrong in bumping them up.
Sometimes people forget about these threads, and they get pushed further and further back.

so...is bumping old threads something that initiates can actually receive a formal warning over?

not that i do it, i never post more than a page back. lol.

aYuH-evolution 24th January 2006 12:59 AM

Heh, no wonder why my threads are dead. ^^' Thanks Impactbreaker.

Some threads are just inherently time sensitive, like most of what is in the news forum.

i wasn't meaning threads from the news forum, but actually more general topics from Chatting forums, topics that aren't so time-sensitive.

devilayu 26th January 2006 04:23 AM

^ I usually tag the thread if it's a year or older because a lot of the posts people reply to are from users who may not even be around anymore. Other times, I'll tag/merge threads if it's something that's been mulled over time and again (i.e. Ayumi's eyes, her 'rivalries', etc.). Also, older topics often bump recent topics, causing people to repost a thread because they don't bother reading two pages of thread titles, so I also tag the year for that reason.

As others said, use your judgement and try not to rehash old arguments. But for album stuff, that's fine (although I find many people have changed their opinions over time).

Really old threads being shown in "New Posts" section.

Okay.. so.. I clicked "New Posts" just a minute ago and I got 4 or 5 threads from 2003! When I clicked it again, they were gone. is this a known problem?? (I think I bumped one accidently because I thought it was already resurrected.. please don't kill me for it! I didn't mean to)

Okay.. it happened again, but only in polls section! SO WEIRD.

The threads: 1, 2, 3, 4

shavoingin 13th July 2006 07:03 AM

I think when someone votes on it, even without posting it bumps it up

Risky Lotus 13th July 2006 07:07 AM

.... ^True. When someone votes in a poll, it is the same as someone replying in a thread. :yrolleyes

Nevada 13th July 2006 07:10 AM

So people are voting on threads from 2003? Why the heck would anyone do that?!

Joel 13th July 2006 07:15 AM

They don't know any better I suppose...:shrug

shavoingin 13th July 2006 07:16 AM

before you posted this i thought you were just bumping all the threads lol

Joel 13th July 2006 07:18 AM

I may be new to Ayumi Hamasaki Sekai but I'm not new to forums, I know better than to go back several hundreds of pages and bump threads..

I wish I would've know that when I first joined. :laugh This is my first forum I've ever been too.

I love you AHS! <3

shavoingin 13th July 2006 07:23 AM

lol someone just bumped one of them again

Joel 13th July 2006 07:24 AM

That one was me:D

Couldn't resist. Although, it was bumped previously today.

emi♡ 13th July 2006 07:37 AM

people dont go back that far (100's)...people bump old threads around here all the time. I don't think its odd to find threads from 2003/2004 in the first few pages.

immel 13th July 2006 06:03 PM

There's a reason why old threads are kept open and sometimes new threads are merged with old ones - no matter how long into the future we go we might still be interested in discussing the same thing that a lot of people have already discussed before us. Bringing an old one back can sometimes be better than making an entirely new thread.

But one thing that I don't like is how threads act like they got a new post when someone vote in them, it can be really annoying :yes.

That reminds me of an old thread that I made here.
I don't mind the old threads as long as they are relevant and can be discussed.

immel 13th July 2006 06:21 PM

Interesting thread, and it did indeed clarify a bit, my last post was only based on my own thoughts, now I know how the forum staff thinks about it aswell.
