Utada Hikaru's name...
 

anyone ever noticed when translated into english, it means "Song be Star" or "Star be Song"?

The tada part means "many fields."

宇/ta is like heaven. And Hikaru is "light" but that's kind obvious.

I thought 'Hikaru' was more like the verb "to shine" or "to glitter" or "to be bright" rather than the noun "light"...

The way it was written in the newspaper was "光" and I didn't see it as "光る" so I assume it's a noun and not a verb because if it was a verb it would be "光る?" someone care to elaborate?

For her career she spells it ヒカル instead of using kanji.

yeah... I dunno about Japanese.. but the way they write Utada in Japanese is exactly the same as in Chinese.. so

宇 = universe
多 = many
田 = field, farm
光 = light

but the meaning should be totally different once the characters placed together.. so probly 宇多田 means something in Japanese... I just dunno :P.

^If you used that direct translation, then her name would mean something like...

"There are many bright fields in the universe."

I feel like there should be some Star Wars music inserted there.

But if that's bad, it's okay. My host sister's sister's name means "Hey! The western village smells pretty good!"

yeah.. i wanna see the kanji of Calico's host sister's name...LOL

I don't have her sister's kanji off hand, but I know it's "Nishimura Kana" My host sister says that Nishimura means "west village" and "kana" is "smells pretty". ^_^

西村 is Nishimura, but I have no idea what kanji are used for Kana.

hmm...I know for a fact that Hikari means "Light" and hikaru means "Shining/Star/glitter" even though I'm a native American I can speak Japanese pretty fluent

sometimes a character can have different meanings. It's possible that those two meanings apply to her name as well.

Not to sound mean, but every jmusic/anime fan talks about how fluent they are. I don't think there is nothing wrong with being proud of your skills in Japanese but, not everyone is or is going to be super Japanese langauge speaker but learning a bit of Japanese to begin with is hard.

just to clear some things up, I had to live in japan for 4 years so that's how I learned and that's not the subject we're talking about.

Anyways, yeah, it could mean other things really than song be star or whatever. Maybe it's just a coincidence that her name is translated like that.

You just can't translate Japanese names like that.

I know poopsie, and other people said that and I assumed it was implied that I knew that by this:

Anyway this is kind of off topic but if anyone is interested, the article about her is here. I got it off of Utada-online.net and it was a while ago but I don’t actually see a last name so I can’t say it’s about Utada so anyone care to verify?
