do your friends think you're weird because you listen to ayu?
i was just wondering... do your friends think you're weird because you listen to ayu? mine do:D !!! i don't care, though.
|
not at all... infact some of my friend share the same interest... j-stuff :D
|
Actually some do while others don't even comment much about it LOL :laugh Some of my friends don't even know I like it hahaha odd ne?
|
nope. they pretty much listen to the same stuff.
|
boy, you guys are so lucky!!! none of my friends are interested in japan and japanese stuff! i's nice to have someone who shares your interests... :)
|
I don't know anyone in real life who shares my tastes in music.
|
even my friend who doesn't into j-stuff doesn't think I'm weird... :)
|
Definately. My friends and family (except for one of my sisters) think I'm strange and never like it whenever I mention something related to Japan. It just shows how simple minded they are and not open to accepting "different" things. :think Oh well, you can't make everyone like whatever you're interested in or else the world would all be the same.
|
My bro thinks im weird cause I listen to songs I dont understand. As for my friends, they don know about it. Because if they knew about it they are gonna laugh at me for sure.
|
Hahaha all my friends think I'm so weird!!!! hahahahhaha None of them have any interest in J-Pop. hahahahha It's funny 'cause they always think I'm nuts. :P

a couple of my friends listen to japanese music, but we don't talk about it that much.
|
maybe they don't think it's that weird cause i'm asian. :/ non-asian people who happend to listen in on my stuff probably wouldn't think much of it.
|
I Dun tell my friends that i listen to jpop stuff.(They'll think im weird)
but my old folks question me though... (do you understand on what your listening to???) my reply? "Kinda" :D |
some of my friends like jpop too..they dun like ayu tho...i guess my friends think me kinda weird..tho they never say it out~
itz so obvious esp when we go to karaoke together...whenever my song is played..they'd just sat there bored and full of questions...hahaha |
He he. I Drive my car and Listen to Ayu loudly. I think many people think thats weird!
|
No, and if they made fun of it, I'd tell them to **** off. LOL It's beter than their american bands anyway. lol
|
yep, im a weirdo in my neighborhood ... so hell with them. *continu listening to ayu*
|
Quote:
"is it too loud, can ya hear it outside from there?!" Other people can call me what ever they want but at least i dont listen to the sissy stuff they listen to. :P hey skygunner! i bet you bang your head in public while listening to ayu! :laugh :laugh :laugh (just kiddin :D) |
None of my friends listen to Japanese music. None of them play rpgs, either. They all think I'm really weird! I don't care what they think, though. It's all good!
|
All of my friends who I have made end up liking her and none of them think she is wierd.
|
none of my friends know I listen to ayu. my brothers found it weird, but for them, it's "to each his own." most of my friends don't play rpgs or watch anime. It's kind of odd, I guess I don't care. My friends don't think I'm weird, they KNOW it.... That's alright, most of them still like heavy metal, and the girls like the Beatles, so I have something in common with everyone :)
|
i never think i'm wierd.. but peoples do think i'm wierd...
they say ayu isn't preety and her voice iis not so good... who cares? what i know i like ayu and all of her song... |
Wow, you guys have NO friends who listen to Ayumi? I have atleast four....... But majority don't listen to Jpop. They just think she is pretty if I show her picture :)
|
my dad at times thinks Ayu's chinese (-_-), but besides that, no1 else really knows that I like Ayu, so for now, my secret's safe :laugh
|
No... not at all... i had a friend hu disnt noe ayumi that much... i encourage him to buy A-Best... n the first time he heard it... he become an AYumi Fan...:P
|
I only have two of my friends that listen to J-pop and that is Takke_Ayumi and onother guy.....Everyone else that I know think I'm weird that listens to music that i don't understand but I'm starting to understand since I'm studying japanese in school mwahahah!
|
my frend doesn't care at all... hee~ they respect it~
|
My friends don't think I'm weird for listening to Ayu, because her music is genuinely good; a lot better than most American music. But, my friends are scared of how popular she is in Japan! I can't think of any mega-stars like her in America right now.
|
my friends are ok w/it even though some don't listen to it..
however some of my other friend critize ayu~ so sad!! |
I guess Britney Spears or J. Lo would be about as famous here as Ayu is in Japan.
|
Most of my friends knew that I'm a big ayumi fan, including one girl who is also her fan. Too bad that she doesn't go online or she will be in here with us.
At first I just wanna be different. I don't like to listen to Chinese songs unless it really suits with my ear. Since most people can accept JPOP and even KPOP, why not? I am sure that more people likes Hikki than Ayu in my town.... sigh, that's because they love R&B. I must admit, although I want to be different doesn't mean that I love to be a lone ranger, I wanna know more people that shares my interest and that's why I'm here. Note: I notices that this thread is chatting about Ayumi, hence it shall be moved to Ayumi Chat Section. Any inconvenience are hereby regreted. |
I have one friend that listens to J-pop. I am the one that got him into it. But all of my friends like anime and RPGs though. They just all think I am weird because I listen to jazz. Go figure.
|
Yep Weird all the Way!!:D and proud of it.
My friend plays RPG's, but that's it. I'm the only anime and Jpop fan for miles around. I actually prefer to be called weird as that reminds me that i'm different, an individual. I've never been one to follow fashion, new trends, what everyone else thinks is cool, so i'm fine with what they say. |
no not weird, no one thinks that
why would it be weird? just u dun listen to it doesnt make it weird! u r the weird ones if u think like this, lolllll |
Heh.. none of my friends listen to Asian stuff either. I'm like.. one of 3 Asian kids in town.
|
Quote:
Anyway although it may seem like it, it really isn't in fact: I like JPOP while most people here don't. That doesn't mean i'm not a trends person. Because if i weren't I wouldn't be at this forum talking about Ayumi. I just found my interest (and share them with many people from other countries) in japanese songs. And if those people are joined together they make a really great amount of people, which goes to show that JPOP is not and will never be weird lol! |
thanks goodness at last some of my friends enjoy J-pop music.
At first they all underestimate j-music, but it seems they love em' now! (although some still don't like at all) |
Quote:
i'm from canada but i'm originally from HK!! that's why! but it's also quite interesting that some western ppl around me also like ayu, well bcoz of me of coz.....send them songs and stuff lol..........and if they dun like it i'll just tie them up and force feed them ayu stuff w/ a tube loll |

My mother thinks i'm a psycho... she's like "why aren't you proud of being american??" i'm like "I am proud of being american, it's not my fault that most american pop culture SUCKS" :P But yeah... most of my friends like Ayu too cuz we're all jpop/anime fans. My sister likes mostly jrock but she likes ayu too. My stepdad tolerates it, he doesn't hate it... actually I think he likes it more than he says he does, but he's afraid of my mom XD
|
I'm just another oriental guy listening to JPOP. I live in a western country now but that makes it no difference whether im still in HK or in UK.
So for my case it isn't really that surprising. How weird it is, depends where you were brought up, where you live now, and what your friends are like. |
my friends dont think im weird. actually a lot of them loves hamasaki ayumi. ^_^ then again one friend doesnt like her. he say she reminds him of a blowfish. -_- .:punch zack in the stomach:. ^_^ also that she sings like as if cats were crying. -_- .:knees him in the groin:. ^_^

All of mine do! I live in the stupidist smallest town in South Carolina. well i don't know if it's the smallest, but it shure seems that way. most of them call it "pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~" music. like they'll say "Alex, are you still listening to 'pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~' music?". that makes me very mad! that's offensive! i just tell them to shut up. i made one of my friends, jessica, a ayu cd & she liked it. mabey i have found another local listener!
|
If I was still @ school, then no doubt most of my friend's would have thought I was weird for listening to Ayu. Luckily though, I'm not in such a situation anymore and am pretty selective when it comes to firends........I've so far made at least 3 Ayu converts, and I expect to make a few more b4 the month is out ^^
|
shinjite, you live in South Carolina????? Chibinina and I live in SC too!!!!!! Your location says "Staras" I've never heard of that town.
knightcat, that's awesome you've made some converts! I've tried many times, but always failed, hahahha. Maybe someday I can convince someone near me to become an Ayu fan. hehe |
I've been lucky in that respect... I've gotten everyone to at least LIKE ayu... maybe not be a total fan, but they like what they've heard. It's easy. Ayu does so many diff styles of music, just make specialized compilations, custom made for individuals who like certain types of music ^_^ For example, John liked the eurobeat stuff from Initial D. Guess what CDs I made him copies of :P!
|
Delirium-Zer0: listening to jpop and proud of being an american is 2 separate thing!! ur mom's idea's kinda funny hehe
shinjite: wow, "pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~" music? not only those ppl offend the music, they also offend ppl of other races! |
same here
there is a lot of people that thinking i'm weird but a few like it so..?! i dont care and keep listen |
I think it depends on where you live. In Asia, Jpop is quite influential and well-known generally.
I think Jpop is something very different to American music; so maybe it's abit hard for some of them to accept. But I've come across many American/French/German/Spainish jpop/jrock fans; it's really a great to know that many of them likes Jpop too. |
at first it was kinda weird but then all my friends got used to me listening to Ayumi lol~
but my parents especially my dad thinks im relli weird, when he says something bad about Ayu i talk back to him and say he listens to old music that isnt even popular nemore and when they sing they make the eeeeeeeee chhaaaa sound :P |
my friends love J-Pop..we have the same interest...but someone of the people hate J-Stuffs...dont know why
|
YES!!! Everyone thinks I'm an alien! lol
|
None of my friends listen to j-music, so they think I am weird.. they ask me do you understand that song? I said yes, and I send some ayu's lyrics to my friends and now they start to like ayu's song... Now, they always ask me where they can download ayu's stuffs (mp3, PVs, pictures) LoL I guess they start to follow me...
|
wow lol well my friends accept it and they don't care as long as it makes me happy. My best friend just bought me Step You/Is this love? cd/dvd as a gift because i bought him the SPAWN series collection dvd and the X-Men series dvd. My friends all like Nami Tamaki cuz she is cool as shizniz and they love Namie Amuro,Koda Kumi and BoA it is awesome we go and look up the translations and japanese lyrics put them togeter and wa laa we know what they're saying and thus so easily picking up some of the language lol they say it makes me who i am
|
My friends dont know who Ayu is :(
|
Almost all of them, except for the Japanese students who've come to live abroad for a year, and my anime freak ones.
|
many of my friends listen to music they don't understand! so it's normal, they all know i'm obsessed with Ayu and they all understand and don't give me craps about Ayu~
|
hahaha, some of them share the same interest as me =]
|
I think maybe one or two of my friends think that I'm weird because I listen to Ayu, but that's their prerogative and I can't really do anything to change that. However, some of my other friends do think that I've become a happier person since I began to listen to Ayu.
|
Most of my friends think i'm wierd for listening to Ayumi -- but I think that's alos because i'm usually a metal/industrial/rock music fan, so my addiction to Ayumi is a bit out there
But I do have one friend who thought the songs were funky |
Well, when I first started listening to Ayu (around 4 years ago), I was still in high school (in the middle of nowhere)....so all my friends thought I was weird for suddenly listening to ONLY Japanese music x_x;; But, once I got to college...even though most of my friends didn't know much Japanese music, they didn't think I was weird for listening to it. ^^ They just got used to my weirdness :P Haha.
|
haha good qns.
1) some of my friends think that listening to japanese songs is weird cos i will not understand a single word (unless i noe japanese of cos). they just feel that its a waste of time listening to some "rubbish" which they cant understand. but the lyrics are far more better than mando pop or english pop. 2) my closer friends knew that i love ayu many years ago. they wont find me weird. we often discuss about our idols! they will ask me if ayu has any latest updates or whatever. my friend even likes Bold & Delicious! he will ask me to play that song thru the phone. LOL |
Well, since none of my friends listen to mainstream music anyway, I have nothing to worry about! :P They're always asking me about "that Japanese music"
|
There are probably many other reasons why my friends think I'm weird, but I guess Ayu's one of them as well.
|
Unfortunately,i have to hide my Ayuddiction from my friends because i know they would think im weird..
|
People think I'm a bit strange anyway, so nobody really cares, although my mother did ask me why I listened to something in another language.
|
My friends don't think I'm weird because I don't let them see how deep my love of japanese music goes. I listen to lots of foreign language music like French, Korean, Indian, and German, so I suppose they figure the Japanese part is all part of the package.
|
wow, considering when this thread was created, i thought i'd have commented in it alread, but here goes.
i don't think my friends really think its weird, i'm sure at some point they did, but now they're used to it. a few of them actually like ayumi now. still, i'm paraoid sometimes when i meet new people because initially i'm afraid they will think its weird. on a whole though, people don't really care one way or the other. :shrug |
I don't think so...most of my friends likes ayumi...but most of the time people think im wierd becaue I am soo obsessed with Japan/Japanese. they ask "ohh why do you listen to stuff that you don't understand?"..and "why are you soo obsessed with japan? if you love it so much..y dont u move there?
|
Old thread O_o.
Anyway, yeah.. Not just Ayu. Every artist I listen in another language I either get made fun of, or questioned. I have to wear headphones every time I listen to it so my brother doesn't make a joke about me or something. It's annoying. I like what I like, and that's the end of it. People just can't accept what I like. They want to convert me to their music or something, when their music either bores the crap out of me or hurts my ears. |
When I first met a lot of the people who are now my best friends, they thought it was odd that I liked Ayumi and J-Pop. Usually they would say things like, "Well as long as you aren't an anime fan" (which I used to be). I have a few friends who do like Ayumi and like J-Pop but most of my friends don't think much of it as they know that it's part of who I am. Plus, I wouldn't really care even if they made fun of me because I would just go around singing Ayu in front of them alot anyways. Well actually, I do that now regardless :)
|
no, not really. most of my friends like j-pop too. except some of my classmates when i was in school, they do not understand why i prefer j-pop to c-pop or e-pop. i just don't care.
while those aunties or uncles, they will think of me as j-pop girl, that's all. |
Yes,most of my friends think I weird.
But, I don't care |
Good thing i have no friends!! :D j/k
Most my friends probably do think i a bit strange but really everyone is strange in their own way. I've gotten a couple friends to listen to ayu but not nearly as much as i do. Most people around my age (22) seem to already have their minds made up what they like and aren't willing to try new genres. Or maybe its just the people i know. But anyhow we're just gonna have to change the perception that listening to music in other languages is somehow weird |
My friends don't think I'm weird, I guess, but couple of them hates japanese music and anime, manga etc. They think that metal is almost only good genre. Well.. I don't really like japanese music etc. too and Ayu is only japanese artist which I like and listen. :P
It's "whatever" for the most of my friends. |
All my friends love Ayu!! We are Ayufreaks xD Well, we listen a lot of Japanese music, Ayu is our favourite~
|
Some friends think I'm a little wierd, but there aren't many in my class that even know I'm listening to Ayu... but I don't like them, so I don't care what they think about me or not XD
But some people get interested in my music, not only Ayu.. but other artists as well... |
My friends love it! I always lend them my new CDs and show them all the cool new PVs I get. Thank god, what would I do if I didn't have anyone to tell how great this new song/pv is?
Although there are people I don't tell like work colleagues cause they'd probably be like WTF. Not sure what my parents thought at first - probably that it was just my next obsession and that it was a phase. They still take the mickey a couple of times, but it's quite funny and don't think they mean anything by it. My sis doesn't really have an interest. She doesn't like Ayumi's voice either. She was so bored the other night she actually watched some pvs with me though. She was unimpressed by most of them but did kinda like Kumi's Selfish. She thought Ladies Night could scare children though lol and Hyde's Seasons Call PV totally bored her. My mum thought a couple of Mika's songs were "nice" and quite like Angela Aki's Kokoro no Senshi single. Don't my parents like Ayumi though - but I ain't surprised. mi|kshake~ |
My friends noe i'm obsessed =D but som hate her (or just dont like her much) >.<;;; i could care less :D AYU IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!! :thud
|
definitely not.
they think i'm awesome, just becuz seeing me love ayu so deeply...and they've never been loving someone that much |
lol, only 1 fried of my knows I like Ayu. The rest don't care, lol.
|
One of my friends likes a few of her songs...
apart from that everyone thinks I'm a right weirdo :P but I really could care less |
Yes!!!! You're veryy right!!
They thi9nk I'm very weird because I listened to Ayu's music!!! And I HATE that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :grumpy :grumpy |
One of my friend seriously hates Japanese stuff.. And other likes but was previously likes Ayu... Something happens to him.. And got a new friend who started to like Japanese stuff and he said Ayu is GREAT! however he is not that kind of people who hunt for stuff he likes.
In fact, here there is no one who will feel weird if someone listens to japanese songs... ;) |
well i have friends who are crazy over Ayu!!! Sometimes, I would borrow my cd's to them to let them hear
|
My friends are pretty ambivilant. But luckily my parents LOVE it. I basically forced it on them so much by always watching concerts and listening to the music that they started to like it to. But they became FANS when I showed them a subbed collection of Ayumi live performances. I showed them the songs that are typically Ayu's most powerful such as A Song For Xx, Teddy Bear, and Memorial Address. They loved the performances and lyrics so much that they are hooked on her now.(My step dad even CRIED durring Teddy Bear) So now, it's usually them asking me when Ayu's next concert DVD comes out and my Mom has been with me twice to Ayumi concerts. They also love several other J-POP artists as well now. (My Mom is pretty much in love w/ Gackt and Hyde and my step Dad wants to go to a MM concert and jump around with all the crazy Otaku.) So yep, they are big fans. :)
It should be noted though that my parents and myself lived in Japan for a few years on a military base, so they were already well accustumed and open to Japanese culture. So it was much easier to "convert" them so to speak. |
That's a very nice story about your parents :). It's a bit of the same here, as I listen so much to Ayu and watch her performances all the time it's impossible for my parents not to start liking her. Well, they aren't fans but they say her music is good. I just gotta show them a few performances I guess ;). They said they really want to see the AT2k6 one, mostly because I went to it.
As for my friends, either they hate her or don't care about her. :D. Some of them did like her music earlier but have decided to simply dislike her now. |
Haha...
Almost of my friends will ask y i like ayumi songs so much,
everyday listen..... Then i will let them a try to listen her songs!!... 10 out of 10 will be addicted of her songs!!.. Believe ya!!..it is true!!:innocent |
Well people find me weird since I don't listen to local pop... But they've less problem with ayu since she's famous here as a foreign singer...
My mum said she's impressed by ayu's live performance (I never showed her some bad ayu's live though... *cough*independent from Countdown TV Special Live*cough*) and her lyric writing skill. :D And I've turned a friend into a hardcore ayu fan. :yes I'm so happy to spread ayu's love to everyone. XD |
