probably because utada doesn't release on a schedulized basis and every now and then, more like unexpected releases.

Yeah, I think she has a broader audience. I think Ayu's is only the younger generation (as in teens that grew up listening to her when she was at her peak and younger)

Possibly because she's a successful Japanese-American? Or maybe the fact that she hasn't released an album in four years? Who knows really... just a guess. (Does anyone know if EXODUS went Platinum in Japan?)

But yeah I was scared Ayu was going to drop like after the first day... but she's still holding #1. There wasn't much change in the chart today, which was surprising. I was happy to see Shimatani go up even though I haven't been into anything of hers post "Heart & Symphony".

Platinum according to the US (1m) or Platinum according to Japan (250,000)? I think it was 1 rank above or below 'Memorial address' in the yearly rankings. But I know for sure it past 1m.

A very very very big audience. It seems like everyone in Japan listens to her songs. Just randomly dial up some Japanese phone number and say "Utada?" and I bet they'd reply something positive.

^ I think it's the other way around. US probably makes Platinum 1 Million because the American Music Industry is so vast and huge. Japanese Platinum is 250,000.

Since Platinum in Japan is only 250,000; a good chunk of albums do reach platinum. Since I didn't know if (s)he meant Platinum in American terms or Japanese terms, I just answered that EXODUS past 1 million (in Japan). Have no clue what the US sales were.

And as I stated, 1 million in Japan is just considered 'Million'.

There is a chart at the bottom. Although it's in Japanese, it's pretty much self-explanatory. (G = Gold; P = Platinum; PP = 2x Platinum; M = Million etc.)

Yeah, it's because of the movie. That song has been out for a couple of weeks now and is doing better now than when it was first released. It knocked Momosu out of #3 for the week. :irked

And btw, Platinum in America IS 1 million copies. :)

I think they do. Most people should know here that the NANA singles last year totally killed Ayu's single-things.. ;-;

Yup, STEP YOU/is this LOVE was supposedly the highest selling solo female single for the year until GLAMOROUS SKY and ENDLESS STORY totally knocked it off the charts.

I think if Ayu had NANA, she'd probably sell 400k+ the normal 200-300k she does.. ;3

Exodus sold a little more than a million in the Japan. In America, it sold 25 000 copies while it charted in the Billboard Hot 200 I think. After that it just continued selling out of the charts. Total sales is probably 40 000 there.

Really anxious to see the numbers, I wasn't around here when Startin' came out so i didn't really get a feel of how people felt about it, just guessing tho but I think people intially like BB better than Startin so lets hope the numbers reflect that.
