Japan Record Taishou 4th year???
 

Wikipedia has confused me

Ayumi has also won the golden prize on the Japan Record Taishou (the most important award in Japanese music) three times in a row, in 2001, 2002 and 2003. She would also win it in 2004, but she rejected the award saying she doesn't want her song INSPIRE to win an award.

She could've won 4 years in a row? But didn't? I don't think that's true, if it's the most imoprtant award in japanese music, she wouldn't do that. Didn't Utada win instead for Dareka?

Yeah. Gold Disc and The Japan Record Taishou are 2 completely different awards. The Record Taishou are the biggest I believe. And I don't think it was supposed to be INSPIRE that was supposed to win, butit was supposed to be for 'Moments'.

I read something about this a while ago and here's what I remember, they offered it to Hirai Ken for 'Hitomi wo Tojite' but he rejected, Ayu with 'Moments' and she rejected (I don't know who they offered it to first) and then in the end, Mr. Children won it with 'Sign'.

As I heard Ayu didn´t want to attend and recive the award because 2004 was the year with the rumors that Max Matsuura leaving avex and so on...
Ayu said she don´t want to win the award only because the attention was on the rumors, she wantet to win because of her singing...so she rejected.
And as I know if you do that you can never win again.

Wasn't it because of Max becoming the new president of avex instead? Rumours had it that they would give ayu the award as a gift for max.
And ayu's afraid that if she won people might gossip that it's because of max's 'succession' as the president of avex.

Aww, poor ayumi...although I think Moments was the last song that even was decent...that and STEP you/Is this Love? or Heaven on missunderstood that could even achieve that greatness...still...aww...she should've accepted...so so could've had 4 years in a row, but wait...isn't it supposed to be a surprise? instead of telling them beforehand? I don't get it...:thud

I also read in a some Japanese article that they were thinking of awarding Ayu's song HEAVEN, but it never happened. :(

Yeah I heard about that too. It's sort of an unwritten rule that makes you get blacklisted from winning any awards.

Kind of like when Ami Suzuki was blacklisted when her parents sued her company & no one would give her a contract anymore (until Max Matsuura picked her up)

ayu might be embarass to her artists fellas...so she was kinda giving up on winning the 4th year award since she had been winning for 3 times a row..

So Ayu would've won five years in a row! Wouldn't that be an accomplishment?

That's true. Maybe Hirai Ken, Ayu and Mr. Children were nominated for the award, but the both Ken and Ayu rejected the nomination and Mr. Children won by default. (Although I think 'Sign' was better than both 'Moments' and 'Hitomi wo Tojite')

I still find it hard to believe that out of all her 2004 songs, 'INSPIRE' was the one that got nominated. But then again, 'Butterfly' won last year (which I thought Kumi had better songs than 'Butterfly' like 'hands' and 'Promise')

I know. hands was awesome. Butterfly was just another generic pop song.
What made up for INSPIRE's nomination was HEAVEN, but I'm not sure if she declined or they withdrew her nomination because of the "rules."

Hmmm, Carols would've been a good choice...yeah as someone said, NOMINATION, I think she probably expressed she didn't want to win since she was nominated, and so did Hirai, so hmm...that's sad....I hope Koda takes every award she can get....lol

Well, there is only one thing I wanna tell you, No motter she is going to win the award again or not, no matter what the true is. Our princess ayu has already became a legend, a history and so on. She is the first, the one and the only singer who could win this award continuously for 3 years. (It seem like )The longest ever before her was 2.

That is, as far as I know, an unsubstantiated rumor. There was no formal note regarding if Ayumi (or another artist who turned down awards) would have won.

2004 was the year with the whole "lets fire Max - oh, he's prez now!" inncident which made Ayu feel that she didn't deserve the award (for some reason....)

But I also thought Ken Hirai also rejected the award after Ayumi...?

I've also read somewhere that the awards are influenced heavily by record companies to promote artistes. So I dunno.

Well, it was avex specifically that they hinted that at..

It was around the time of the 2004 avex thing, so naturally she doesn't really want to be involved in any controversy. So she quit while she's ahead because declining if she was nominated would be just rude.

it's about the problem between the ex-avex president and Max (they had different opinions) and rumor said Max would leave avex because of that. Then, ayu said that (i forgot if she did announce it tho) if Max's leaving, she'll be leaving as well. There were also rumors floating around the net that a few artists would leave as well. As a result, the stock of avex went down immediately, and that avex president resigned in a few days. Max became the president in the end...

The thing is that ayu announced sometime later that she would not accept any award later on because of that incident. (like... INSPIRE was popular because of that). We never know tho whether she declined the award secretly or what...

Btw.. I remember that when she after she announced to decline any award, one or two days later the organization of nihon taishou (japanese record award??) said that they've never offered the award to ayu.. but then later on they changed their words again saying that ayu did refuse them beforehand... no one really knows which rumor is true... :P

The info is true, there's been some speculations on why and someone else than me can probably give you a better answer.

From what I've read it's due to the fact that the song is made purely for her fans, and not something she want to accept an award for. This has been discussed before, I don't remember if it's got its own thread somewhere.

I was just reading her wikipedia page and I saw this

I usually skim through her wiki page when I'm bored, and that was never there before. So does she no longer accept awards?

it is true after the feud in Avex Trax in 2004 Ayu made that descion even though the feud doesn't have to do with AYu and accepting awards *sad* I wish she still got awards

i wasnt very sure about this too and i am still not too sure even after through all the posts... all i know for sure is that she will not accept any more awards and the reason behind it got to do with the power struggle in avex in 2004... but i just cant see where the link between these two events is... can some1 fill me in on this?
