...baby one more time - Britney Spears

I'm totally serious. When that song came out, EVERYONE knew it :paperbag

immel 21st October 2006 10:28 PM

I'm very biased towards Ayumi Hamasaki, so I won't pick any of her songs.

Madonna - Material Girl, to me it's more or less symbolising the definition of pop.
Michael Jackson - They Don't Care About Us
Gackt - OASIS

Also remember that the definition of Pop music, as in Popular music, includes all kinds of music.

I'm afraid I disagree... in 1999 with the raise of the Boy Bands and all the drowing of POP music there was a communicate from the music ...errr... i don't know how u call it in english... caouncil? association? whatever ... the thing is that they accepted POP (that should be written with capital letters) as a seperate music genre so from then on there would be 'popular' music and 'POP' music, that's just like ROCK: one thing is Rock 'n Roll and a very different thing is all the other ROCK genres. All this is in music history books

No.. It's a sole genre. That's why there's a Billboard Pop Chart. R&B/Hip-hop and Rock tracks can't get into it.

Papa Don't Preach (by Madonna, not Kelly Ousborne)

That song is the pure expression of what an excellent pop song is. Used to be my favorite song when I was 5 years old, and nowadays, 20 years after, that song never ever grows old, it still is a favorite. I wonder what hit Madonna when she released TRUE BLUE since some of her most excellent songs are in that album.

You're both (that's you and immel, who you quoted) halfway right. Pop is a very broad genre, though it's often only considered as the kind of music that is, indeed, on the Billboard Pop Chart. However, like I said, pop is a very broad genre, and includes pretty much everything leave for a couple of genres (e.g. jazz, avant-garde, classical music). Hence, I will include things that could technically fall into genres as rock or folk, but quite untechnically, they're just the darndest greatest pop songs ever recorded:

The Jesus & Mary Chain - Just Like Honey (YouTube)
Utada Hikaru - Final Distance (YouTube)
Joanna Newsom - Peach, Plum, Pear (YouTube)

Recently, though, I've heard lots about that jazz, classical music, and so on, can be included. It counts as popular music because people listen to it. Especially, there's radio channels with classical music only.

Technically popular music includes everything that a kind of majority listens to.

I think it's about time they actually split it into the genre "pop", which would include the most basic pop sound and anything close enough to be called pop.

And the term "popular music", that includes everything of what pop originally is/means/meant.

Genres is mainly for the ease of categorizing, for the music resellers, anyway :P.

Nothing is certain, especially when it's all so much based on personal taste. It fluctuates with the opinions of the majority, like everything else that has anything to do with language.

sxesven 29th October 2006 11:09 PM

I've never liked the classification of 'pop' as popular, even if it's where the word comes from. Popularity is relative, and frankly, every genre is popular, except then with certain crowds.

My points is, you're wrong. I'd love to get technical, but more frankly I actually wouldn't

/edit/

What the heck. I'll just copy and paste the quick Wikipedia definition here (which is 100% correct) for starters:

Quote:

Pop music is a genre of popular music distinguished from classical or art music and from folk music.
Notice that pop music thus excludes 1/ classical music, 2/ folk music and 3/ art music. What art music denotes is debatable, but if you limit it to jazz and whatever falls under avant-garde (meaning everything from ambient to harsh noise and power electronics) you're pretty safe.

The definition of pop music as 'popular music', meaning music that is considerably popular, is frankly quite nondescriptive and immensily popular among those who have no notion of musical genres and their respective histories. Popular is a completely relative term, and though I understand what's meant by popular, ergo the fact that a considerable number of people appreciate x, it doesn't make for an obvious classification of what pop is. And pop can certainly be classified: as said before, it's everything but classical music, art music and folk. The immense popularity of, say, Miles Davis, or classical composers like Mozart, Bach or Beethoven, or whatever popular folk artist you can come up with, doesn't make them pop. I hope you see the pure absurdity of even considering this.

Of course, all this does not mean that pop is, in the end, a genre with clear boundaries. In fact, it certainly is not. There's plenty of cases imagineable where there's no clear division; plenty of pop artists borrow freely from aforementioned non-pop genres and in some cases it's just incredibly difficult to categorize something. Where does Bob Dylan fall? Pop or folk? Where does Billie Holiday go? Jazz or pop? Not to mention such dubious cases such as Il Divo.

Whatever the case, I hope this at least marginally improves your understanding of pop and non-pop. Thank your for reading.

immel 29th October 2006 11:13 PM

I never tried to claim to be right, I'm only presenting what I have heard and how my view of it has been, up till now.

My whole point is that I don't care, I love to discuss things to see if or what happens and what I can learn.

I hate the classification of pop as popular, maybe resent would be an even better word.

Pop is pop, in my simple little world.

You're hilarious :D.

sxesven 29th October 2006 11:28 PM

I'm right, that's the word you were looking for. :P

Hope you read my edit, btw, for clarity.

immel 29th October 2006 11:45 PM

Thanks for notifying me about the edit, wouldn't have seen it without your note.

Thanks for the clarification, for the record, I think it was from wikipedia that I got the speculation about classical music becoming "popular".

Makes you think ;).

sxesven 29th October 2006 11:47 PM

Wikipedia isn't always right (in fact, that's a gross understatement), but the particular piece I quoted is certainly correct. Just make sure it's not your only source and you'll be fine.

It must be said though; Wikipedia is relatively more correct than your average encyclopedia. There's a lot of wrong info on it, but the pure bulk of (largely correct) information makes up for it. Interesting enough, I should think.

immel 29th October 2006 11:52 PM

As much off topic as this is going, I just have to add one more thing...

Oh, so right you are.

Are you kidding? Every Gwen Stefani song is terribly special to me, they're so damn replayable and good. Leagues above normal pop music. Each track could have been a hit single if promoted well. I can't believe she didn't release "Bubble Pop Electric" as a single. Instead, we get "Crash" and "Serious" to end the album. Even both of those are examples of greatness. The reason I have plenty is because probably around 90% of my music can be called pop. But I'll make a list of her songs that are special.

Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For?
Gwen Stefani - Cool
Gwen Stefani - Luxurious
Gwen Stefani - Harajuku Girls
Gwen Stefani - Serious
Gwen Stefani - Danger Zone
Gwen Stefani - Long Way To Go
Gwen Stefani - Wind It Up

Ugh and that song was also one of the reason Hikki was constantly mocked on US radio interviews...with lyrics like that, that's what it should be expected LOL

Well, the lyrics got her some recognition in Malaysia though. It appeared in the local FHM, the VJ's used it in their shows for Channel V and MTV, radio DJ's used it, etc. IMO, the best song in her career possibly, together with Kairo, Sakura DROPS and Hikari. I love it so much. :laugh

Joanna Newsom certainly has a special voice (love-it or hate-it, you could very well say), but I personally love it to bits. An acquired taste, perhaps, though it was love at first, eh, sight, here. Moving, gripping, fascinating, beautiful.

Indeed - whichever way you look at it, Easy Breezy really is pure pop genius. It's a song that got harshly (but unrightly) judged for its sometimes too simplistic lyrics (though this is debatable, imo - there's (much) more to the Japanesey line than just an awkward cutesy statement), but the musical side of it is simply astonishing. And I don't mind sitting through lines of Japanesey and her having a new microphone just to enjoy those few minutes of pure pop pleasure. Exodus easily ranks among my favourite records of the last five years, too. Great music, very underrated.

You're so awesome for saying that. That's true. The music is so damn good. The awkward guitar plucks really add something to an already addictive melody.

ImpactBreaker 31st October 2006 10:44 PM

Exodus is awesome (aside from 2 specific very terrible songs though). EASY BREEZY just humilliates and makes that album underrated. How in the hell Hikki had the idea of making horrid lyrics (and the vocals aren't really that far behind) and use it to promote the album goes beyond my imagination. it's not just that the lyrics are plain dumb but the way she sings in despair sounds like she's in labor. No wonder, the song only got airplay on Disney and Utada was mocked to hell on interviews. Even the "yuck" Wonder' bout would have been a better choice to promote that album imo. :laugh
Another very bad and I mean BAD, TERRIBLE, OBNOXIOUS point of Exodus is how Hikki has to self confirm in almost every track the fact she's asian and japanese throughout the album. Silly, redundant and, obviously, unecessary imo.

sxesven 31st October 2006 11:09 PM

You don't like Wonder 'Bout? Wow, haha, that's easily one of my favourites on there. Mainly for its completely amazing production. <3 the bass.

I can more or less see where you're coming from when saying that the references to Asia etcetera can be a bit too much, but I can't be bothered too much by it. The album's just too brilliant. ;)

moombasista 1st November 2006 01:21 AM

:laugh I get what you mean. It's kind of like how Gwen Stefani was constantly advertising the L.A.M.B clothing line on L.A.M.B and how Beyonce was bragging about all the money she earned over the years on B'Day.

What a coincidence that the two tracks you deem the worst are what I consider to be the best tracks. So I think you can say that you either hate Exodus or love it. Easy Breezy, Devil Inside, Wonder'bout, You Make Me Want To Be A Man and Animato are easily my favourites. <3 The other tracks are amazing too.

The album should be re-released and given another chance in the US. It CAN make it there. Just one more CPR during a lull in the US music industry. It's a shame Island Def Jam underpromoted it.

I'm going to put it out there. Pump Up the Jam by Technotronic. That song is stupid good ^_^!

EDIT: Oh! And I completely agree about the genius of Exodus, though the lyrics were a bit awkward (not the Japanesey line though. The meaning behind that line is so blaringly obvious that I'm surprised so many people missed it).

The production IS amazing! I don't like the lyrics though... like on almost every song LOL :laugh

Exactly what I thought about the album as well. The music was great, but somehow the lyrics didn't fit at all.

Greatest Pop Song of all time? Kylie's I Should Be So Lucky! :yatta

I agree. IMO, She redefined what pop music is and what it should be about(for teens)!!!:D

That song started all the sexistic teenage behaviour. >_> I blame Madonna, too. Her combination of religion and erotic makes me nautious. @_@

I <3 Koda because she started writing when everyone was already sexistic and raping so I don't blame her lol.

OK, so best pop songs... Idk... I know some of my favs that are kind of poppish:

My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion (I know not really pop)
Be My Last - Hikki
Passion - Hikki
evolution - Ayu
JEWEL - Ayu
Butterfly - Koda
Black Cherry - Koda

Let's pretend that it's all pop lol. I'm not sure if it is.

All of Mariah's early work. Especially Emotions.

dddaiyamondo 17th June 2008 04:03 AM

^I totally agree, especially Mariah's "Fantasy". One of the best pieces of R&B/pop music I've ever heard! I think it was really influential on female artists in the late 90s as well. Especially cuz it was also one of the very first songs to have a female pop singer and a rapper collaborate.

Madonna - Like a Virgin
Madonna - Material Girl
Madonna - Hung Up
Britney Spears - BOMT
Britney Spears - Gimme More

damn her list would go on and on lol. I'd just say, pop songs that had a huge hit around the world or something that had some drama over it.

Celaphorce 17th June 2008 07:43 AM

I'd say

Spice Girls-Wannabe
Britney Spears-..Baby One More Time
Madonna-Material Girl
Christina Aguilera-Genie In A Bottle
