The Official Janet Jackson Thread

Yes, from the highly-dysfunctional and well-known, controversial Jackson family comes oversexed little sister Janet. Known for her steamy (downright smutty) lyrics, smooth, sexy dance moves - and, oh, not to mention her overexposure in 2004 - she once was an R&B/pop icon dabbling in energized dance music, highly sexualized ballads, and social commentary (Rhythm Nation, anyone?) up the wazoo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janet_jackson

Having just turned 40 this year, and having released her latest album, 20 Y.O. - a reference to the 20th anniversary of her breakthrough album Control AND to how old she feels - her star has dimmed quite a bit, but she's still there, having fun and making music we can enjoy or make fun of.

Any fans among us? Any non-fans with something to say about her anyway? All opinions are welcome.

Discussion... go.

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 24th November 2006 11:30 AM

Hmm, you interest me, you always make threads about singers I like.

I can't believe the crap songs she chose to release first from 40 yo, if she released something like "Get it out me first" I bet the album would have greater success. I hate "Call on me" and and "So excited"

My fav album is "All for you" it just makes me giddy. I love it so much, especially the title track.

Mad_Cactuar 25th November 2006 03:07 AM

I only like Together Again and Just A Little While...

Her abs scare me.

extepan 26th November 2006 08:31 AM

i like janet jackson. her music is very emotional.

the velvet rope album is so deep, dark and emotional. it is her best album, definitely!

'doesnt really matter' has a beautifully layered chorus. i love it as well!

Halla 26th November 2006 09:51 AM

I like Janet's 'All for You' & 'Design of a Decade' albums. the latter has all her best songs from her earlier albums , I especially like 'love will never do (withouth you)' :)

I like Janets upbeat songs , I hate her sexualized ballads. they don't sound sexy or anything , just gross :rolleyes

'20 YO' sucks bad , I only like 'Call on You' & 'With U'. I'm a big fan of JD's productions , but Janet just hasn't got the voice to pull of the type of songs JD produces so the end result is 20YO sucks.

Janet's comeback single "Feedback" is amazing, I have alot of confidence for her new album!

Yeah it is so hot.
My new favourite song for now.

Halla 15th December 2007 11:53 AM

her new album is scheduled for a release in late february 2008.

I think "Feedback" is ok, there's one little lyric there that really grosses me out. the part that starts "I'm heavy like a ....." , the finish to that sentence is just a bit TMI :dead2

I like my songs withouth mentions of bodily functions :rolleyes

Aisha_Angel 15th December 2007 02:07 PM

I can't wait for her new album. According to the press release issued by Def Jam the album is called [Discipline] and as usual will be released in Japan first (Feb. 20) & then America (Feb. 25).

atashida 19th December 2007 02:36 AM

I'm kind of getting into her now. My parents bought Rhythm Nation for some reason (just weird because the rest of their collection is def. not R&B..) and I like it. I might try and find a copy of the velvet rope now.

I think the Super Bowl thing just shows how nudity-phobic the US is...OMG a boob. Whatever.

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 21st December 2007 08:12 AM

I think people outside of America were more shocked at the American peoples reaction to her "Wardrobe malfunction" than the actual malfunction itself... I remember when it was on the news here, everyone was just like WTF is the big deal and then jokes were made about prudish Americans etc etc....

anyway, soon as I saw this pic I decided i'm going to buy her new album... I don't care at all what the rest of the songs are like... She deserves my 20 bucks for such a damn stunning/hot/amazing/fierce pic.

Partino 21st December 2007 09:47 AM

holy mother of freaking gucci... that's some breath-taking cover ... haven't heard any clips yet cause I don't wanna spoil the surpirse ...

criminal 21st December 2007 11:16 AM

OMG it's like she's an African-American robot from Björk's All Is Full of Love video! :O :O :O

atashida 21st December 2007 04:01 PM

Some people proved that cover's fake, it's a pity though.

I don't really like the new song that much but I've been listening to a lot of her older songs via youtube and last.fm.

Jordan 28th December 2007 12:31 AM

I have all of Janet's albums (even the remix ones) but ive slowly fallen out of love with her!!!

But im sure ill be buying the new album :D

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 8th January 2008 06:27 AM

judging by this snippet... The Feedback video is gonna be amazing!

JANET JACKSON IS BACK!

Halla 8th January 2008 01:24 PM

I wonder if MTV will play that new video. There's a rumor that they blacklisted janet because of the superbowl incident, they had to pay huge fines for it.

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 9th January 2008 01:28 AM

The full version is out... ahhh it's stunning

ronin542001 9th January 2008 07:57 AM

Whoah....I am so loving Janet's new style! Cannot wait for this new album!

Huaka 9th January 2008 08:17 AM

I don't like Janet Jackson. I don't think she's pretty. The only songs I liked from her was the one where was running across the rooftops of buildings and It Doesn't Really Matter to some extent.

Halla 1st February 2008 08:46 PM

13 songs + 9 interludes. "06. Bathroom break" sounds gross, hopefully it's not anything about her bodily functions like on Feedback :dead2

on her official site http://www.janetjackson.com, there's a jukebox where you can listen to "LUV" & "Rock with U". they are ok songs but nothing too amazing IMO ...

Kobayashiwoof 3rd February 2008 12:37 AM

im really looking forward to this album :D, still deciding wheat i should get the Japan release or buy it locally because i want those bonus tracks! lol

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 3rd February 2008 01:14 AM

2Nite is supposed to be the best song...

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 17th February 2008 03:21 AM

Preview all the Discipline track here http://www.amazon.com/Discipline/dp/...212465&sr=1-19

I really wanted to like it but it's no better than anything she's done with the last two albums imho. I only like a few of the songs and I highly doubt hearing the full versions will make a difference.

What a come down.

Aisha_Angel 17th February 2008 03:36 AM

*sighs* The album previews are okay...This is definitely not an album I'm going to buy.

Kaiouforever 17th February 2008 03:37 AM

I've only listened to Rock with U, Luv, and Feedback. I definitely love Feedback; Rock with U is not too bad, and I'm not really into Luv. I haven't listened to the previews for the other tracks, and I'm hoping there are a few songs that I like. This is a new label for her, so I'm going to take this album in stride. =]

Halla 17th February 2008 09:12 PM

ugh, the new albums sounds like 20YO part 2. and that's definitely not a compliment :o

she should have continued to work with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. she needs producers like them who can overcome her vocal shortcomings lol

Luv ~Venus~ 17th February 2008 09:15 PM

^Ugh...EXACTLY. Not that Jermaine is a bad producer but his beats isn't for Janet. Jimmy and Terry produced most of the songs I luv from her. Jermaine should just stick with Mariah. OOPS! :innocent

Umm....can someone please tell me the point of the Feedback video? I like the video but I just...I just don't get it!

austin. ♥ 17th February 2008 09:49 PM

^ Yeah that's sexy, sexy, sexy. Well she's attempting anyway. :D

The Discipline album cover is horrendous btw~ I wish Western albums came with CD+DVD options, not in rip-you-off-B'Day-Deluxe-DVD-Edition-here's-looking-at-you-Beyoncé forms. :grumpy

Luv ~Venus~ 17th February 2008 09:57 PM

^:roflmao

OMG! I know! XD I wish they had done that with the FutureSex/LoveSounds too. I am so pissed that they released a damn deluxe for that album. :wtf I ALREADY BOUGHT IT! Ugh, American record companies got that really bad when it comes to the releasing CD formats. I could have saved my $14 and waited until the deluxe came out. Ugh!

I haven't see the covers an dI want....not until I get to Wal-Mart. XD [I'm not buying the album.] Janet hasn't persuded me enough to buy this album. :no

fanmail 20th February 2008 01:58 PM

THE ALBUM HAS LEAKED, AND IT IS DAMN HOT. TELL ME IF YOU WANT THE LINKS <3

Halla 20th February 2008 07:57 PM

^whats the quality of the leak ? if it's not at least 192 kbps cbr then I'll wait for a proper leak myself :yes

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 20th February 2008 10:43 PM

The leaks i've found are 128kbps but I did'nt download them. I have no interest in hearing the full versions yet after hearing those previews.

fanmail 21st February 2008 02:21 PM

ack the leak is in 128. it sounds quite fab though. and OMG you don't know what you're missing out on DX

Kobayashiwoof 22nd February 2008 09:25 AM

i have a varied rip the min is like 180KB~

so far the album is really great!, im buying it when i see it in Australia

To those who have heard the album, how does it compare to her other ones in terms of style and quality? I have high hopes for this album and want to buy it, and I am curious as to how this album sounds.

fanmail 22nd February 2008 04:37 PM

It's your standard Janet album. Slow ballads, upbeat pop, sexy R&B, LOL interludes ... if you like All For You/Damita Jo/20 YO, then you'll have no problem enjoying this album. =)

It depends upon your personal taste. If u liked the last two albums you'll probably like this one, something I was hoping it would be nothing like.

9 Interludes? They're probably only 10 seconds long. :tired

fanmail 22nd February 2008 11:37 PM

oh right. well you have to hear it. the interludes are fun. she befriends a robot called QuKi, or something that sounds like that :laugh

All of my friends and their friends were all talking about her the other day, and everyone was like "OMFG WHAAAT" and Janet having sexual songs :roflmao

~X2RADialbomber~ 23rd February 2008 01:36 AM

Okay austin... :P Maybe my word choice was bad... but still that song is THE WEIRDEST SONG EVER IN EXISTENCE.

Who the hell would sing in that tone/pitch like a little girl and say those things about her father?

Nu-NRG 23rd February 2008 06:02 AM

eww...Discipline is.....so weird
the song just...um no comment

Kobayashiwoof 23rd February 2008 06:34 AM

i saw her album in shops today :D

I havent seen the CD only though~

the CD+DVD comes in the same crap packaging as Justin Timeberlakes sophmore album when it was re-released with the DVD, OO and its shiny too :D

I dont have cash for the album till next week though :(

Rhthm Nation, Velvet Rope and Control albums. Damn, Janet went all out on them. :thud

Halla 23rd February 2008 12:59 PM

I'm pretty sure she says "Kyoko" as the robots name, pronouced in american way rather than japanese tho.

I think the album is best described as "20 YO part 2" as it's really close to the style of that album musically, but I have to say Discipline is better than 20YO.
I think the main problem with the recent janet albums is that, unlike her long time producers Jimmy jam & Terry Lewis who she no longer works with, these new producers can't really handle Janet's vocal limitations.

like Mariah Carey can work a track by Jermain Dupri because her vocals are amazing, but janets whispery voice needs more production and just more support musically.

many janet albums have a akward "baby-makin" jam that is supposed to be sexy but the end result is downright nasty & really uncomfortable. "Warmth" & "moist" on Damita Jo & "Discipline" on Discipline come to mind as the worst :o

i'm pretty sure Discipline will bomb, there's like zero promotion and there are much more anticiated releases (new stuff by Mariah & Madonna) coming up so Discipline will be soon forgotten. Besides Feedback, I just don't see what song could work as a single off the album anyways ....

fanmail 23rd February 2008 01:20 PM

Rock With U has been getting really positive feedback from fans and such. I think it should definately be used ^^;

TITANIC 23rd February 2008 03:12 PM

yaiiy..
i like feedback clip...
she danced well also

Kaiouforever 25th February 2008 08:57 AM

The end is my favorite part <3

fanmail 25th February 2008 11:14 AM

The video was el cheapo, IMO. :o

Kaiouforever 25th February 2008 03:55 PM

it could have been a bit better, but at least the end was pretty cool! (The first parts WERE a bit...pointless. WTH does feedback have to do with jumping around on planets?)

hightea_xx 25th February 2008 07:13 PM

anyone got discipline yet? i got it last night and i like it, all in all. thoughts?

drewbilation 29th February 2008 06:07 AM

I bought the CD+DVD edition tonight at Target. I hate the cardboard cases like it came in, but it was only two bucks more for the DVD, so I couldn't refuse, haha. I haven't listened to it all the way through yet, but I like what I've heard so far.

Not counting "20 YO," I now own every single US-released original Janet album <3

Kobayashiwoof 1st March 2008 01:47 AM

i bought discipline yesterday as well :D

CD+DVD :D, i hate the packaging though :|

austin. ♥ 1st March 2008 02:06 AM

Is it like, cardboard?

drewbilation 1st March 2008 04:24 AM

^ yes. it's almost like a digipak, but the CDs fit into this little sleeve and have nothing holding them in place. Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad" CD was like that, too.

Vinylfantasy 2nd March 2008 08:26 AM

Forget the album, the promo mixes of Feedback are where it's at. (It's the only worthwhile track on Discipline anyway)

Part 1 | Part 2

1. Moto Blanco Radio Edit
2. Ralphi Rosario Dirty Radio Mix
3. Ralphi Rosario Electroshok Radio Mix
4. Wideboys Radio Edit
5. Jody Den Broeder Radio Edit
6. Moto Blanco Full Vocal Mix
7. Ralphi Rosario Dirty Club Mix
8. Ralphi Rosario Electroshok Club Mix
9. Wideboys Club Mix
10. Jody Den Broeder Club Mix
11. Moto Blanco Dub

Fierce fierce fierce!

drewbilation 4th March 2008 11:59 PM

so, Janet is expected to get no. 1 on Billboard this week with around 180,000 copies sold.

Kaiouforever 5th March 2008 12:40 AM

I'm glad it'll be number 1. I like the album, but the upbeat songs are better, I only like a few of the slower ones. I'm happy.

hightea_xx 5th March 2008 05:08 AM

actually listening carefully to this album, i actually really like it. it's a slower beat than what used to... but that's not a bad thing

Kaiouforever 6th March 2008 05:52 AM

I just noticed that everyone on this page of the thread is male @_@ Haha. Guess men still trying to holla at her. =]

The Rock with U video is so cheap but I still love it...

austin. ♥ 6th March 2008 10:44 PM

So, #1 album and Janet's first top 20 single in 7 years (Feeback #19). Sucsess, no?

She's tied with Madonna with 6 #1 albums and joint-second to Barbra Streisand!

drewbilation 7th March 2008 12:58 AM

so "Feedback" finally reached the top 20? I thought it would have peaked at 51 or wherever it was. yay, though <3

Kaiouforever 9th March 2008 10:07 AM

I was so surprised to see Feedback jump to #19, I thought it was doomed to loom the 50s and 60s for all time xD Especially because it was released a while ago - guess the release of the album helped it out!

EDIT: Just saw the Rock With U video and I really like it. It's not "flashy" but it's still awesome, with Janet dancing, and showing a perfect night out at a club. The video sort of hypnotizes me xD

ian lim 11th March 2008 09:21 AM

The album is not really impressed if compare to her The Velvet Rope or All For U. Indeed, this album sound like 20YO part II or still in damita jo mood. I wonder what happen to Janet, if she hit the creative block? That's no sparks between she and her boyfriend, JD at all? I hope Janet will move on and collaborate with other suitable producers. Anyway, congrates to Janet for another No.1 album, although the sales is low.

ayu99persen 29th March 2008 11:38 AM

i've bought the album.nice cover.nice interlude.n nice songs.i really like feed back ,Rollercoaster (the best track possibly),rock with you,2 nite,so much betta, the one (nice to be next single),Discipline (wow too sexy 4 me)

fanmail 29th March 2008 08:57 PM

"Sexy" isn't the word I'd use to describe the song "Discipline" :innocent

♥ you! 20th December 2008 06:32 AM

Hmmm her recent tour hasn't been selling great and Janet needs to stop letting JD work with her, he is ruining her career! Bring back Velvet Robe Janet PLZ
