[2006] Black Cherry vs. Secret (oh yes, I went there!)
 

Which album do you like better? I for one haven't listened to Secret yet since I am waiting to get my copy Christmas Day from my mom but I have no doubt that Secret it going to take the cake - however, I will not vote as of now...

I like Black Cherry though, but I think the amount of new material is terrible. Considering I liked most singles/a-sides, I would rather judge the album as a whole - although if this were Ayu's album, I would prefer her to have saved more new material for the album but since it is Ku and I don't have as much passion for her, than it is fine. She'll have 5 new singles next week anyway, lol.

Secret. You know, I probably had too high an expectation for Black Cherry. And the hype was crazy. So far I downloaded the CD, listened to WON'T BE LONG ~RED CHERRY VERSION~ and gave up on it. Damn, it was baadddd.

Black Cherry REALLY disappointed me
Secret is wayyyyy better
it's kind of weird
Koda's single tracks are better than Ayu's
and Ayu's album tracks are WAYYYY better than Koda's
but Secret flowed better, and the songs are more addicting
the only song i can play a million times from Black Cherry is Get Up&Move!!
so yeah i chose Secret
all the wayyyyy!

Sadly, as much as I am a Kuu fan, Black Cherry was only exciting me with it's Single Tracks x.x I listened to Secret today, and it just made me feel really good... sadly Black Cherry didn't do that for me

I'm so disappointed with Black Cherry OMG

Tough call. Both had great singles and great album tracks. But really, you can't compare them. They're two very different artists with very different styles on each album. Ayu focused on pop, rock, and techno. Kuu focused on pop, R&B, a bit of rock, and sweet/powerful ballads. She loses a bit of edge because of Candle Light, Milk Tea, and WON'T BE LONG ~Black Cherry Version~, but gains them back for everything else - fifteen great tracks (one more track than Ayu's album) so there's more wiggle room for error. Ayu... well, I have to say, Startin' and 1 LOVE grew on me immensely. With Kuu, I love all but three songs. With Ayu, I love all fourteen tracks. That's roughly the same amount of material between the two.

I think they tied, but again, it's a very weird comparison because the albums were so different stylistically. Again, the whole pointless Ayu vs. Ku war is being egged on again.

On the plus side, at least nobody was doing something insane like comparing Mika's TRUE to Hikki's ULTRA BLUE and asking us which album was better.

and i found that i had to skip most of the songs a minute after
i hope i'm not being biased
and even though the two albums are so different
ayu and koda will always be compared

chances are that Black Cherry first week sales will be explosive

Black Cherry is horrid - I only like 4 tracks from it! I really like Juicy, just because it's sooo nasty! --
But Secret is awesome, the whole album!
Jewel + Until That Day... + Beautiful Fighters & 1 Love... that's all I need.

I was hoping something like this would not show up...lol Hope there wont be any fights or bashing. I would also want to say that I wouldnt call the album that I dont like suck or whatever coz even though I may not like it, the artist itself put alot of work into it.

I listened to both albums and I chose Secret..not that because Im a ayu fan. I have my reasons! In my opinion, both albums didnt have good single tracks.

Kumi had 8 single tracks + wont be long as a single with exile, plus songs that are released already as something else before the release of the album (GO WAY!!, twinkle) so basically there werent that many album tracks and plus some of them are too short. I didnt like any of the single tracks...I like yume no uta, unmei, Ningyo hime musically but I dont like her voice in them...and I think that kinda ruined the songs for me...so I dont like them.

Ayu had 4 single tracks on the album and the only single song that I could listen to without kinda skipping would be born to be (coz of the arena tour dvd...it was awesome :luv2 ) but I didnt think it fit the album....just like b&d didnt fit m(u) in my opinion. The rest of the single tracks, I had to kinda skip...especially beautiful fighters..:dead2

Album tracks:

Some of kumi's album tracks are way too short...I thought ayu's were short.. I think the only good thing about this album is the introduction and get up & move...those two were great to start off the album...but I dont see myself repeating those 2 songs...and I also thought they was kinda misleading. If I didnt listen to the single tracks before, I would of thought the rest of the songs would be more r&b. I think the only song I truely like on the whole album would be puppy...the rest...I deleted all from my computer. Also the album didnt really flow well. Something about her voice too...its gone weak and she sounded awful...especally milk tea. :dead2 I never thought I would say something bad about her voice because I think she has one of the most strongest voice Ive heard. I think her voice needs to rest coz seriously I might enjoy more of the songs if it werent for her voice. Well I did give the album a try...but it didnt work out for me.

Ayu's album tracks were excellent in my opinion...ofcourse if you compare them to her old work, they are not as good...but atleast they are way better than the single tracks. I heard this album before kumi's and I thought ayu's tracks are a bit short...only 1 song that is more than 5 mins long...and its beauiful fighters...-____-...I love the introduction...I love it more after seeing the translations....the second song flowed smoothly after the intro...at first I didnt know it was the second song already. I wish they would make the intro into full length. I think this is the only ayu album that I dont need to skip any album tracks...and I think she did a good job in making them better and more different than the single tracks. I also like her deeper voice in this album and how she sang until that day and 1 love differently than normal. There are some things I didnt like though...only 14 tracks and we have 2 interludes and intro...it would of been nice if there are more tracks if she have to keep them. Also I think there is room for improvement on the arrangements of some of the songs.

I felt ayu improved her album tracks and pvs from her single tracks and I really appreciate that...and that is also one of the main reasons why I chose Secret. I dont want to imagine if she still stick with the single type songs and pvs...well atleast she made up for it I guess. :) Black cherry has a song that kumi composed for the first time. It was a nice attempt from her and I appreciate that for her trying...but sorry I dont like that song at all...her voice...:no Is it a good thing that its so short? and I also think her album tracks werent as great as her single tracks (except for puppy) and I dont like her single tracks in the first place...so I dont like the whole album. Atleast for Secret, even though I dont like the single tracks, I like all the album tracks and there are none that I need to skip.

I'd say Secret, even though I know Black Cherry might sell more. Ayu's album was very solid and I enjoyed every song on the album. Black Cherry had some songs that I didn't enjoy like Unmei and Puppy. :/ I didn't like how it flowed either, with the sudden ballad in between two fast paced songs. XD So Secret wins for me.

Secret, even wothout bias I would still choose secret I was shocked at Black Cherry.

Black Cherry isn't very bad actually, but WON'T BE LONG ~Black Cherry Version~ is just plain terrible. I want to buy the album and I don't want that hideous track on it. Milk Tea is very nice, but the vocals are ridiculous.

I'm really happy because I love both albums! I prefer Secret. But I'm not as dissapointed as all of you about Black Cherry.

Ku's album aint bad..its fresh, Get Up&Move!!! & PUPPY are my fav new songs...because they are upbeat..something Ayu doesnt always do..these r&b stuff...

Ku's rock is definetely not as gd as Ayu's.

Ballads wise..both are gd and bad pts. Ayu's wan lack bridge and her ballads this time round are calmer but somewhat powerful too. Ku's vocals aint that gd on her ballads but still acceptable to be (ballads i mean Yume no Uta & Unmei..the rest mehh)

Ku has more variety which makes the album not flow well..Ayu has a focused album and flows well. Ku overuses Eng in her songs and AYu has a just right amt..

BUT ku's album didnt really disappoint me though i was looking forward to it because i really like most of the single tracks...but those tracks i dont like..forget them...it will make both albums just as awesome...

Hence, going by the number of MEMORABLE tracks, Secret WINS

Black Cherry by a bit. Secret's album tracks were pretty good but I felt that there was a "umph" factor in BC that wasn't in Secret.

Black Cherry has some good track. 1 or 2, but then, the other, since were released in her singles, and which I didn't like that much, so actually, there's not much songs that I live from Kuu's new album.
But SCRET is soo good!! I like it a lot!

Wow, one thing I have learned in life is, experiment the things on your own instead of just passively listening to others. By reading the coments about Black Cherry, I was indeed expecting a totally awful album. I was actually scared to listening to the WON'T BE LONG Black Cherry Ver. That song actually doesn't sound a quarter bad as some of the comments make it sound. I kinda like it, and it's "urban" feel (a la "Heat" and "JUICY") does a good follow up for JUICY. I've learned to like the 4 HOT WAVE songs, specially "I'll be there".
And c'mon this album has the best song released in 2006: "koi no tsubomi", I just love that song to death! This album already gets a 10 from me just because it has that song, no matter how much the others might suck heh.

Not saying this album is the better than Secret (I only still listened to it up to track 12), but I sincerely hope you guys didn't first listen to this album (BLACK CHERRY) directly comparing it to ayu's Secret as that would be kinda stupid. Both albums sound so different. I don't critize comparing both, just hoping no one listened to BLACK CHERRY for the first time directly comparing it to ayu's Secret.

Also, you complain, but you're comparing. Some of the songs in BLACK CHERRY were upgrades too. The INTRODUCTION sounds like all her other introductions. Get Up&Move!! has elements of both Candy and JUICY. unmei is an upgrade of Gentle Words. Both albums are EVEN in that aspect.

Secret may appeal much to Pop-Rock lover Ayumi Hamasaki fans. While Black Cherry may appeal much to Urban R&B Pop Koda Kumi fans. You can expect a lot of bad reviews from this forum, why? Because majority is Ayumi Hamasaki fans. Who OF COURSE prefer Secret. They have to ensure their queen have most votes. (And also, because their musical preference is of course, Ayumi Hamasaki)

Well, I don't like these comparisons either. But some people here have listened with proper attention to both albums and given an honest opinion. Just because the majority won't bother to make it proper, doesn't mean everyone will do so ;)

i actually like "Black Cherry". :] i wasn't expecting much, but it turned out great! same thing happened to me with Ayu's "Secret" too, LOL. both have their stand out tracks ("Get Up&Move!!" and "kiss o' kill") and not so good ones ("With your smile" & "Beautiful Fighters").

i choose "Secret" though. it had a stronger "WOW" factor to me. most of the songs off "Black Cherry" were released as singles! i think it would've been better if "Cherry Girl/Unmei" wasn't released prior. the album would've been more "fresh".

but i think i like both albums quite equally.

You know, at first I was a little scared for Secret because I had this feeling that Koda was gonna fart out something called an original album. To be honest, Koda's had a pretty good year, great publicity and a new marketability she didn't have two-three years ago. The problem is; 2-3 years ago Koda was more of an R&B/hip-hop kind of girl (imo, her voice sounds better that way). I always figured her to to be more like an advisary to Namie rather than Ayu but ever since Real Emotion her and Ayu have become like enemies...Okay, so Koda's trying to sing more poppy stuff now...that's cool and all but does it sound good? Does she even like it herself? Is it real? These things I just don't see in her and although I'd like to hope that Black Cherry will be the slip-up she needs to improve her talents; I'd like to say that she isn't the only one.

2006 has just been a bad year for music period. Saleswise & Musically.

Overall, Black Cherry will probably sell 500,000 copies in it's first week but it will not exceed 1,000,000 as quickly as her BESTs-era. (that's my prediction) Mostly it's all because of this sudden DIVA-storm that's running this month with Mika-Ayu-Kuu-(there's another girl I just don't remember who is was...). It's like they all come out at the same time with the same colors as their color schemes...did anyone notice that. It's like the BLUE-something association all over again.

Oh yeah...my vote; Secret definitely. That was the best album I've heard all year. I don't care to much for Until that day and Beautiful Fighters but who cares; the rest of it is AMAZING. kiss o' kill makes my day.

Going on the sales of Cherry Girl/Unmei I think Black cherry will sell less than M(U)

I still think secret is better but Black Cherry is ok.

I think just based on the sales of cherry girl/Unmei will not predict the sales of black cherry...the rest of her singles in 2006 did very well....and pluc she released cherry girl very close to black cherry.

^ i'm comparing it to M(U). the sales for all the singles were very good except for B&D/Pride (also released close to the album plus awkward style). I just noticed "Black Cherry" is going the same way, well it's actually a bit worse.

I actually thought her pronounce got a lot improved! In past songs I couldn't undertand much, and she would roll her tongue too much. But listening to twinkle, I could actually get a lot of the lyrics by year.

Exactly. If you compare real Emo & 1000 Words English ver with Twinkle, Twinkle pwned those two. But still, it is still below average.

Regardless of the forum though, people will enjoy what they enjoy.

With Secret, it'd be like 'Oh, another rock style song. again.'
The only song I didn't like on BC was WON'T BE LONG ~BC version~. It may have been bearable but for the guy shouting out 'shorties'. Baaad. But it worked as a pre-track to JUICY. The album flowed really well. She coupled Puppy with Koi No Tsubomi, WBL with JUICY, she spread the singles out and it never sounded repetetive.

The instrumentals kinda killed Ayu's for me. They were too soon after one another and halted the flow. Also the singles did not sound right on the album. It's all well and good that the album tracks are good but they should compliment the singles.

Those guys who enjoy what they enjoy will give a lot of positive/negative reviews about what they enjoy, which could give a big effect to those people who don't enjoy what they enjoy, they may think what they think they should enjoy is not as enjoyable as what they think they would enjoy because they read those reviews from those who has enjoyed what they enjoy.

and I chose Secret... I'm kinda sick of Kuu's single tracks.. Listened to them too much... Ayu's new album was fresh... too bad, they resemble alot of her older works...

Well I don't really think it's a good comparison because Kuu is really more of an album-seller than Ayu is (she's a single-seller). Cherry Girl/Unmei looks like it will be passing 100k, and that's considered very good considered it's 2 weeks before the album release (compared to Ayu's 4/5 weeks). Plus, Unmei is 2nd most downloaded song on cellphones yesterday (Cherry Girl is 13th). I don't think B&D/Pride reached as TOP 5.

I don't think the albums should be compared because 1 both albums are totally different. They speak to the fans in 2 totally different ways. And we just got Kumi's album can we learn to love it first?

I like "Secret" much more than "Black Cherry". Just because I like ayu.haha~:)

The more I listen to it, I'm liking Black Cherry more and more. The ballads are really good, no epics, but still very easy to listen and enjoy. The vocals are weird in the ballads, a lot of feeling yet poorly executed. But it comes across as cute instead of ear-damaging. Tracks like "Candle Light", "Milk Tea" and "Tsuki to taiyou" are really awesome!

And I agree, "Koi no Tsubomi" is enough to warrant the CD full marks. Still I can't stand the ridiculously crappy version of "WON'T BE LONG". It's like someone only used Acid, Fruityloops or Nero Soundtrax to remix the song.

Ballad-wise, I have to say that Black Cherry and Secret both lose to BESTYO. Hitoto's ballads are so beautiful, such as "Kazaguruma" and "Hanamizuki".

But I still choose Secret, though I might buy Black Cherry and BESTYO too. :yes Three of the best J-POP albums this year from female artistes. Not to mention Utada's effort. I don't get the hype about Ayaka's songs though, they're so normal. Ok, this is getting out of topic.

I haven't listened to Koda's Black Cherry album yet but I have listened to Ayu's Secret album. And form what I've heard on the secret album, I can't possibly see Black Cherry being as good as Secret......But for now I'm not going to vote until I've listened to Black Cherry!!!!:P

After hearing BOTH Black Cherry and Secret, I'm sorry but Secret wins hands down. One of the best works from Ayumi as yet. Black Cherry is disappointing and commercial sounding. Too much new material! I LOVE Cherry Girl though, but the album on a whole is just plain BAD and disappointing.

If someone says something bad about Kuu or Ayu, but they've actually listened to the songs in question and are making an informed judgement I can respect that. But so many people who get at one or the other (In this case kuu, as it is an Ayu forum and I respect that) don't actually listen to the albums or songs and still pass judgement on it.

chameber's wasn't too bad as they said nothing derogative about kuu but I often read posts along the lines of 'I haven't listened to it. Why would I because she's skanky'. The best post I ever read of that kind had the person calling her a skank when the thread was about her ballads :no The mentality of some people.

I was very dissapointed with Black Cherry. 2 songs I liked on that album! Again TWO SONGS!! Secret, was just amazing. The flow of the album, the tracks, it was perfect. It was a step up from (m)u. Black Cherry on the other hand was just no where near her previous albums. so in the end I picked Secret.

Good parts about Secret:
-Ayu's voice
-Excellent quality album tracks
-Good lyrics in general
-Flow of songs

Bad parts:
-Single tracks
-Not enough songs
-Could be more diverse
-Lyrics weaker compared to previous albums

Good parts about Black Cherry:
-Urban/hip-hop tracks which song like they could come right from the US. She does this style the best.
-Diversity
-Lots of tracks

Bad parts about Black Cherry
-Cliche lyrics
-Doesn't flow well
-Awful boring ballads
-Bad 70s upbeat r&b songs or whatever style it is

It is tough to compare these two albums... in terms of musical quality, which may be subjective, I feel that Ayu produces more quality songs than Kumi. I have to choose Secret over Black Cherry =/ Something just doesn't rub me the right way with Kumi heh.

I've listened to both albums and while Black Cherry has some nice tracks Secret is my favourite - not because it's Ayu, but because it has wonderful songs like until that Day..., 1 LOVE and Secret.

I thought the same thing tho as that user. Kumi herself has said her favorite style is Hip-Hop and she didn't really start doing the poppy stuff until after her BEST album. I think they must use a lot of commercial style music as singles and save the type of music Ku likes for the album!

I haven't heard "Secret" yet, so I'm waiting to vote.

Oh my oh my... I must say Secret. Ayumi's voice just never gets old to me, while Kuu's sexay voice is very fun at times... I enjoyed several tracks on Black Cherry, my favorite being Cherry Girl, but Secret's tracks are just on a whole different level than Black Cherry's. :)

Usually, I would pick Kumi's "Black Cherry" simply because I like Kumi better than Ayumi, but lately, I haven't been diggin' Kumi's new songs except for Koi no Tsubomi. I've heard almost every single song in her album and I can honestly say that I think I've only liked 2 or 3 songs in the whole thing. Ayu's "Secret", on the other hand, has great songs throughout the album. My favorite is the title track, Secret. So, my vote goes to Ayumi Hamasaki's Secret.

Last two days I am just listening to Kumi lol :D For a change~ But I always end up liking Ayu more. :) Don`t know why hah...

First of all, 500 people have already mentioned this [lol]. Second of all, I made a poll once like "ULTRA BLUE vs. (miss)understood" and at one point ULTRA BLUE was higher and it has been a very close race, basically 50/50. In that case, I voted for ULTRA BLUE, although I love Ayu more than my family and friends [lol, jk]. I also wanted to hear what Kumi fans thought of the album as a whole and it seems most of them are dissapointed as well...

I agreed. The Exile version was pretty good. Waaay better than the versions that got put onto the album.
Still, Black Cherry wasn't too bad. A bit of a let down but I like it better the more I listen to it.

the visual aspect of Black Cherry makes up for the mediocre-ness of the music

I love Ayumi much more than Koda, but I was disappointed in "Secret", while "Black Cherry" was amazing. Right now, I'm listening to both albums again and see which one I will vote for, but i think Koda wins.

I can understand if you compare Utada Hikaru to Ayumi Hamasaki. But you're comparing Koda Kumi to Ayumi Hamasaki? Wow. I don't know what to say really. I honestly do not see any sense in that.

Both albums were pretty boring I feel as Kumi's album was another best album, I only care for track 1 and 2. I mean Black Cherry was a mess. It went from Indian rap crap to pop cutesy music. As for Secret, I felt as that album was "rushed". So It could possibly compete with Black Cherry. I think if ayumi could have waited, released like one or two other singles, the album could have been successful. Everything on Secret sounds the same almost. 1Love and Jewel sounded like album tracks, both very bland. If I had to choose I'd pick Black Cherry because even though it sounded like a mix CD it had at least 5 good tracks on it as Secret didn't have any.

I think expectation-wise, I was expecting a lot more from Ayu. I get a rushed, lazy feeling from "Secret" while I feel like Kuu has been putting a lot more work into her material. So, expectation-wise, I think Black Cherry would win, but everything Ayu sings I fall in love with, so i'm not sure which one to vote for.

Secret.

Black Cherry is a fine album, and worthy of selling whatever it does, but I can't embrace anything by Koda as much as I can Ayu's work. To me, she just doesn't have all of Ayu's creative spark and consistency.

That said, she still has lots of very good, enjoyable songs on this and other albums.

No, in the 'who will sell most' poll. Come on, we're not all Koda-haters like you think. Just because a few of the members are rotten apples and bad seeds, you don't need to be an entity of pessimism.

Actually you can basically call Black Cherry a Best album...
Basically its all released tracks and like 3/4 new songs...

Whereas Secret has liek 8 new tracks...
But most albums only have like 4/5 new songs anyways... What differs from Black Cherry and those albums eg. BoA's Outgrow is that Outgrow didn't have like 8/9 released tracks on it....

Best album should conclude artists' hits from a certain period of time (like from debut to the current time).

Which means Black Cherry =/= Best album.

I was really hoping to like Black Cherry. Now I'm glad I didn't buy it. Kuu dissapointed me again! Most of the album tracks are weak and I agree that her singles were better than the new material. I even grew to like Koi no Tsubomi. :yes The only album song I like is Get Up&Move!! Everything else is....:cry

This poll is silly because:
+Black Cherry has just released. It hasn't grow on most people yet. While Secret has.
+This is an Ayu forum. With a large amounts of Anti-Koda Ayumites.


And s1012h, because your statement "it's Koda and Ayu" is a bit questionable. Koda's fame was just a year ago O_O
