[2007] Which artists/groups do yu think are overrated?

1. Mariah Carey!!! I really don't understand why she's always number 2 on the best voices in modern music lists! I tried her album The Emancipation of Mimi, and it was like songs from tons of different artists sang by just any other woman. They didn't really seem original to me. And her voice didn't move me at all...

So what about everyone else? What musical acts do yu feel get way more attention than they deserve?

*Oh, and for some reason i cant stop thinking that ive seen a thread like this, so if there was one, sorry about making a new one!!

drewbilation 22nd June 2007 06:09 AM

Akon. I hate his voice and his songs are just ridiculously stupid.

A lot of rappers, too.

bondingo 22nd June 2007 06:12 AM

The reason Mariah's so popular is because of what she's consistently done. Her earlier albums showcased a superb vocal ability that she's till known for to this day. However, her voice just isn't quite the same as it used to be, but she's still viewed as a legend for what she once was. I think she deserves it, but I also agree that Mimi was a very blahhh album. I wasn't a fan. I miss the old Mariah.

As for who I think is overrated, I'm not really sure. That's a tough question. I guess maybe Ciara was when her first album came out. I really don't think she's anything special, at all.

I just noticed this post after I posted and I completely agree. His songs are extremely annoying, and many rappers are highly overrated. I think Eminem and P Diddy are definitely two of the most overrated.

ayumeg 23rd June 2007 07:08 AM

^ I actually think Eminem is very talented, and I usually cannot stand rap.

Hmm...

I think that HIM is overrated...I built myself up to think that they were great and then when I actually listened to them I was unimpressed...

I cannot think of anyone else at the moment but I'm sure that someone else will come to mind.

austin. ♥ 23rd June 2007 07:20 AM

ORANGE RANGE.
50 Cent ..:lmfao at pathetic rap music.
The Pussycat Dolls / Nicole Scherzinger.
Nelly Furtado. SELLOUT

Beyonce isn't great, is amazing. Her vocals are absolutely amazing. Maybe you just don't like her and that's why you don't see it.

Hey, you came into this thread, there's no reason to bash someone else's opinion when they mention an artist that you think is great as "overrated".

I don't really think Ayashi was bashing meerkitty by saying "Maybe you just don't like her", but I agree that this is the kind of thread where everyone is just stating their opinion and they should be left alone :)

voltron 23rd June 2007 06:41 PM

I can't stand Justin Timberlake.

Or Madonna. I don't think she could hit a note if it were nailed to the wall in front of her. And her lyric writing is really absurd. I can still appreciate her as a pop-icon, but I can't take her seriously as any sort of artist.

I have to agree on Madonna.Maybe she was just before my time, but I do not see the big deal about her.

Timbaland. It's not even like he's the artist on most songs, he's just there.

The other month in an hour on the radio about 5 songs came on that he'd produced and 'sang' on.

Fergie! If she has to say in every song that she's not a ho', then she's obviously giving off the wrong impression.

Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse - Enough said.

Shakira. I was actually one of those who liked her before Laundry Service, and still didn't see that album as a sell out. But she's since dissapointed. A lot.

There's no rule about not replying to other people's opinions and I'm not the only one doing it in this thread. Plus I'm just stating my own opinion, not trying to convince anyone.

I don't think it's a big deal. I wouldn't worry, because you weren't rude or anything :\

But I SO agree about Timbaland! :eviltongu

Calico 24th June 2007 11:06 AM

I don't get John Mayer either. His songs are bland to me, his lyrics irk me, and his voice just grates my nerves.

Mai Kuraki. I have never understood how she was so popular. A majority of her songs bore me to tears. I like a few of her songs, don't get me wrong, but if I don't like at least 5% of your songs, there's a problem. =(

I don't really listen to a lot of mainstream Western music to comment on the others.

I agree with both of these entirely. Your post pretty much explains everything I feel about both of these artists. John Mayer is loved by so many, but I find his songs to be really annoying, as well as his voice to grate on my ears. As for Kuraki Mai, I'm still in complete awe that her first album is one of the best selling in Japanese music history, because it's a bore. The songs just scream "I can do R&B", but they really end up appearing as if she wishes she could do something as great as Hikki's.

Keishi 24th June 2007 02:44 PM

Timbaland. Akon. And...hmm, AHA. Paris Hilton.

ImpactBreaker 24th June 2007 03:16 PM

ai otsuka:

Bad vocals, the verses of her songs never matches the chorus, and seriously, I see no talent in being cute and doing cute stuff and drawing cute things when almost 90% of japanese people (a joke, but geez, a lot of people there do that) already do that. When are people going to realize that plasying piano and composing music doesn't equal talent if you can never even match the entire song well? She can put porn and perversions into her videos (CHU-LIP) and people will still praise it as cute, innocent, beautiful, decent material. And the ammount of over-defensive fanboys that will attack you if you even dare say anything about her is scary, watch out they get really violent just because you've criticized her work.

I do like many of her songs, though I still think she's overrated nonetheless.

Keishi 24th June 2007 03:44 PM

^WHOA. I couldn't agree more.

Halla 24th June 2007 03:46 PM

ok, here goes:

Western Music

U2
I think they get too much credit/attention than they'd deserve, most likely because of Bono's humanitarian work. As a band I feel they're overrated.

Christina Aguilera
her vocals border screaming to me, and her latest album just isn't that good.

P.Diddy
he needs to rely on other people collaborating to make a hit.

Japanese Music

Mai Kuraki
all her music is really dull and her singing is mediocore

Couldn't agree more. He's always getting these awards and stuff with the music part included and I think U2's music is honestly terrible. I have no idea whatsoever what made them so famous. The humanitarian thing is done by so many people though, but for some reason it seems to be his most recognized asset.

paper_doll 24th June 2007 05:15 PM

I agree with U2. Although I like their Joshua Tree album quite a bit... that's about it. No matter what they put out, everyone seems to like it, when, imo, it's pretty bad :no

AyumiSEASONS 25th June 2007 12:11 PM

Ai Otsuka - My God Ai, Your ballads suck now.
Fergie - Yeah, the first three singles were good, and then you threw out that crappy ballad. Eww.
Justin Timberlake - SexyBack? WTF Kind of title is that? The song's twice as lame.
Fall Out Boy - Most Pathetic Attempt at Rock Music Ever
The Used - You're first album was great, WTF happened to you guys?
Good Charlotte - First Couple of Albums were Great...Good Morning Revival = CRAP.
Avril Lavigne - Loved your first two albums, and then I *was* excited for your new album till you had to put out that horrible excuse for a pop song. So I'm not gonna listen to anything but your old stuff, and like three songs off The Best Damn Thing, k? K.
Evanescence - Love the new album, but never gonna be as good as you once were. Amy, we all know you hated the singer from Seether for being drunk - we get the picture. Don't have to sing about it in every song.

Bolded the ones I couldn't agree with more.

JesA 25th June 2007 07:05 PM

more to add!

Beyonce - she seems to scream in every song! I would take Michelle and Kelly over her any day!

Hinder - omg Hinder...grr they make me so mad...all they are to me are Nickelback rip-offs..

and i agree with Ai Otsuka, U2, and Timbaland.

panda87 25th June 2007 07:09 PM

Justin Timberlake - music is soooooooooooo corny. makes the hair on the back of my neck rise.
Jay Z - can't rap, can't dance, can't do jack shiz. Beyonce, he is sooooooo replaceable.
Maroon 5 - all they sing about is sleeping around and one night stands. and Adam Levine's voice is sooooo annoying... and he's one arrogant, cocky s.o.b. w/ LSS (lead-singer syndrome) ahahahahah.
Fergie - horrible spelling-lesson songs. and BOOM! there's the ballad with the corniest lyrics
Fall Out Boy - horrible. just horrible.
Akon - aaaaaaah, if a man with that voice can make it, anyone can! wtf do u call that? sounds like shiz!
Sean Paul - i hate this guy and his music with a passion.
Rihanna - sounds like annoying horsefly. she's so h-lla h-lla gay gay gay...
Nelly Furtado - she's a horselfy too

EDIT: how can i forget!
Mariah Carey - lame.a$$.music. ur cellulite a$$ needs to retire. u belong only in the 90's.
PSD - nothing original. they are boring. period.

Avril Lavigne have you seen her new remix of Girlfriend?!
as if the song wasn't bad enough, she has to remix it with that pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~ 'Lil' Mama'!
you know.. "my lipgloss is poppin', my lipgloss is kewl".
ugh!
That Nelly Furtado, she totally changed her image and music just to go mainstream.
and it's also Timbaland's fault too!
none of her pop / folk stuff was charting so she called all these lame rappers to work on "Loose" so she could get in the hip hop / r&b genre!
but congrats to her! :rolleyes

I'd love it if Timbaland would stop "producing" tomorrow. I've heard what he's got to offer and now that he has gotten so arrogant, he can leave.
I've never liked Akon and I don't understand why people like him.
Dani California is a cool song and Desecration Smile is okay, but all the other RHCP singles from Stadium Arcadium are so annoying.

qwerty 26th June 2007 07:18 AM

Justin Timberlake. I think Justin's music is simply terrible and has no creativity; there's just no variety in his songs. The lyrics don't make up for them with their dullness, and his voice makes his songs even more grating to listen to. I don't see what's so great about him. :shrug

John Mayer. I can see why people may like him, but I find his songs particularly irksome because of the lyrics. His voice sounds distorted as well. Overall, his music is mediocre to me.

That statement could not have been anymore true. I miss her old, slightly unaccessible music so much. Whoa Nelly! and Folklore were both wonderful albums. I guess selling nowadays truly is more important than being creative and different...

As for two I just remembered, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, which I thought of from criminal's post. I've never liked them, and their stuff from Stadium Arcadium may even be crappier. I just can't stand Anthony whatever's voice.

And I may get flamed for this, but I could care less. I think that the most overrated band of all time would without a doubt have to be The Beatles. I'm sorry, but I am not a fan of any of the member's voices. While I may certainly agree with many of their political beliefs, that hardly means I care for their music. I can't describe it; I just find it to be really irritating.

Oh, and Elvis. I can't stand him...

I think their music is actually pretty good but maybe it's because I was born listening to them. My mother had a huge beatles vinyl collection. When I was at around 5-7 years old I was actually impressed by how creative their album covers were. I'd stare at the MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR album which had a very beautiful shiny cover and look at the weird cartoons. It was so innovative. They had several other creative covers and I looked at other artists covers and I wouldn't feel the same inspiration. About the members voices, well maybe the quality of the recording at that time makes it irritating? I don't think songs like "Let it be" have bad vocals though. And even though years have passed songs like "Love me do" are still so catchy. I guess I'm just old LOL I do believe a great part of their popularity coes from the context they were in. Nowadays most artists group copy one another, you can hardly make a difference between rock bands, hip-hop, pop etc artists. The Beatles at the time they were producing stuff were quite unique.
And no, i'mm not a The Beatles freak. I only own one CD with some of their best songs and they aren't really my most favorite band.

I completely disagree (personally) with those who said Beatles, U2 and Madonna... Without artists/bands like them, music and pop/rock culture wouldn't be the same

Most others are just overnight sensations or this year's trendy act, I mean, Rihanna for example couldn't ever enter the history of music the same way Madonna did

Any of that overproduced pop crap, to be quite honest. Even if I listen to it often these days... I can still find it catchy, but at the same time overrated.

That includes anything from Highschool Musical or what-have-you.

Oh, and Chris Brown. But that still falls into the former former category.

Anything Disney puts out.

Ugh, it's like, Just-Shoot-Me-Now-Music.

Miley, Jonas Brothers, High School Musical. damn.

Katy Perry to me is a bit...her music is like looped hell. omg.
Rhianna a bit too...her music isnt THAT great damn.

And a few indie bands out there that all sound the same.

And a few "rock" bands too that also...sound all the same.

I didn't say it was any good just BECAUSE she went indie, but she sings better than Paris ever could. And you've just reached a low with that :(

tinka69 30th January 2009 11:16 AM

I find western pop culture overall overrated.

sora-kara 2nd February 2009 04:43 AM

i think a lot of rock groups are overrated.
nickleback needs to crawl into a whole and die. they can take acdc with them too.

i also think leona lewis is not all she's hyped up to be.
i think she does have a great voice, with impressive range and all that.
but i just HATE the way she sings. its just too much.

and yeah, most of the pop people mentioned are overrated too.
rihanna cant sing, but has a good image and some catchy tunes.
justin timberlake bores me to tears.
madonna is kind of annoying at times, but i like how her albums are very thorough and solid.
coldplay is soooo self indulgent. ~_~ just go away and sing to yourself already.
we wont miss you.

PoetGirl 3rd February 2009 09:11 AM

but last year was definately rihanna lol.

i can think of huge number of overrated artists, im too lazy lol.

Asia:
Any boybands
any girl bands also
Koda Kumi = can't believe someone said she sings as good as Mariah and most of her music bores me to death (I like Butterfly and Taboo a lot... and Cutie Honey too... but it's a cover and I knew the song long before)
Mika Nakashima = she looks like someone with cancer... her singing have no emotion and she is a terrible singing live (but you can finally feel the emotion when she feels pain trying to reach the high notes)
Aiko

Western:
Rihanna = Can't sing, can't dance, low charisma... why is she famous at all?
Kate Perry = Can't sing, can't dance, low charisma... why is she famous at all?²
Hilary Duff = Can't sing, can't dance, low charisma... why is she famous at all?³
Christina Aguilera = Yeah, she is an amazing singer... but her music is so.... meh...
Mariah Carrey = Don't know... maybe I just don't like her personality (and her music)

And I agree that Madonna, U2, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, etc aren't very overrated cause they influenced almost all pop acts we have today at some level... Even if I don't like The Beatles....

emi♡ 16th February 2009 12:43 PM

I've been thinking for a while that...omg all I hear on the radio these days in Rhianna...

I totally missed her becoming so popular. But I think her voice is unique...so that's why they chose to market her.

But anyway...at the thread at TN, I recently expressed that I felt Namie Amuro was overrated.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE her new stuff. But how anyone can enjoy her stuff pre-STYLE...is beyond me. And she was HUGE...

so I guess music was just that different back then...and I'm just not into it or something...

ayumixfan 16th February 2009 02:15 PM

I never understand how people can say "This list of singers cant sing" ... its always strange to me lol ~! I mean like maybe you don't like their voice or something but they're a singer for a reason right? I dunno just my opinion XD even I say some singers cant sing sometimes out of impulse but i guess in the end I know that they can outsing me anyday : P lol! (of course excluding certain people who use money to get where they are)

overrated .. I'd have to say:

Koda Kumi: I don't see anything special about her or her music
Rihanna: All of her singles from Good Girl Gone Bad sound the same to me and yet they all did well
Miley Cyrus: Nothing special, infact I really dislike her voice and I think she's ugly... XD
Akon: Another singer who's voice and songs I find annoying
50 Cent : I dislike his rap, and his personality
(list of other rappers that fall under the same category because their raps are all the same)
Maki Goto : I just felt that MM made her seem so much better than she is
Simple Plan : I dislike their songs maybe that was due to an influence from my friend and her choice of "emo" songs lol
Justin Timberlake : I still don't like sexyback... and the more songs i hear from him the more similar they seem to get XD

Thats all I can remember for now XD

Well... to be a good singer everybody needs to take some vocal training... There are a lot of pop performers that don't really know how to breath, how to use his/her voice, how to sing while moving, how to project his/her voice...
Most of pop singers aren't amazing vocalists and don't have great voices... their voices don't have good range (like... their high and low notes aren't very high and very low compared to their mid-notes) and don't have much potence (they can't sing "loud") but even so, can use it good enough for their own songs... Ayu, Hikki, Namie, Madonna, Kylie, Gwen, etc. aren't stunning singers... But they learned how to take good use of their voices, so, even if they are not amazing vocalists, they are medium or good ones... (like... 3 of 5 stars :P).

Rihanna, Avril, Kate Perry, Mika, Koda, Ai Otsuka, Britney... they all aren't very good (0 to 2 stars :B), but even so, they can improve a lot if they take some effort on it (Avril's singing is really better now than it used to be... Koda is improving with time too... Ayumi was terrible back in her 1998-2002 era)

Some amazing vocalists would be... Alan, Ayaka, Ayaka Hirahara, Shimatani, Christina, Beyonce, Celine, Mariah, Kate Hudson... even if I don't like their music or voices (Christina and Mariah, don't like their voices at all), I can't say they are bad singers... Cause they nearly aways are amazing vocalists

By the way... Being a good vocalist is not only about singing in a beautiful way... If the singer keeps singing without any coaching, he/she can damage his/her voice for good... Ayu lost her voice past year because of this at AT08, remember? ^^

I think this is a matter of opinion XD Like I REALLY think Utada Hikaru has AMAZING vocals. I'm actually really surprised you said her vocals aren't good. Same for Namie. And personally I think Utada hikaru's vocals are like a lot better than alan's. Like IMO when alan hits her chorus in ashita he no sanka, her voice does NOT sound good, it might be strong, but when she tries to hit that high note its not lovely IMO and on top of that I feel liek she sounds like a lot of chinese singers out there who don't get appreciated like she does( This is just my opinion don't flame me for it). I agree with you that there are some singers that DEFINITELY have amazing vocals, but that doesn't mean other singers don't have good vocals. They are just not as superior as mariah's or christina's.

Ayu is actually another example of why I think its an opinion. You say she's better than ai otsuka and koda kumi, but she damaged her voice from improper singing, while the other two are fine. Sure she has more years on them, but like her lives now can sometimes be atrocious while namie, koda kumi, and ai are fine. I just included namie to prove that years doesn't mean ur voice should die. But like aiko is another example anyways. She's been in the industry as long as ayu but her vocals are fine!

If you think a singer has good vocals, thats your opinion, and if you think another singer has bad vocals thats fine. lol : ) I'm just stating my opinion that its more about how people percieve it. Of course there are people with bad vocals but I think most singers have good vocals and thats why they're singing. We just don't appreciate some vocalists because we don't like the sound of their voice.

njanjayrp 17th February 2009 02:29 PM

Hmm among non Asian people I think alan is way too over-rated, and Japanese Visual Kei bands, I can't seem to get a good idea why many girls (out side of Asia of course) love them that much, they dress like women with extremely bad taste and their music is quite generic and stupid, well I guess the fact that most of their fans are younger than 15 explains a lot xD

As for Japan, I think that ayaka is way too over-rated, she has an amazing voice, her songs are good at times, but her music is mostly plain and boring pop.
EXILE - way too generic for me to handle, their songs contain way too many random english lines which barely make sense.
KAT-TUN - sure they do have a few catchy songs, but I don't really see why people like them, they don't even look good.
aiko - I have nothing against her, but she is among people I find boring.
I personally find Hikaru over-rated as well sometimes, but since I might get in trouble for saying why, I'll leave it at that.

As for the non Asian music scene, I have no comment xD

Well... Good vocals aren't a matter of opinion, but of course... You can like or don't like a singer without taking in consideration if he/she have good vocal skills or not...

Utada's Kremlin Dusk at Utada United for example... I know a lot of people that think that performace is amazing... But if you ever show that to any singer teacher or vocal coach, I'm 100% sure he/she will ask you if she really is a singer :B

If I say that singing good is having beautiful vocals, I'm lying, beautiful or ugly are a matter of opinion, you can like koda or ai vocals even if they aren't good taking their Vocal technique in consideration , Utada is my favorite music artist in the world and she is far from sounding perfect

=)

I happen to love VK bands, a lot, and I am nowhere NEAR under the age of 15. And not all of them dress like women with bad taste, it's mostly just the make-up that they are doing these days.
As for bands/singers I think are overrated...
Britney Spears
Miley Cyrus (why is she popular again?)
The Jonas Brothers (just...no.)
Akon (he doesn't even SING, it's a computerized voice over his own voice...)
I've started to think Linkin Park is a bit overrated, too. I love their older stuff, but they pretty much went mainstream and I can't stand that.
I don't know much about Japanese music besides the bands I listen to myself, so I can't really comment on that aspect of it.

I apologize :) I admit I went a bit too far with that xD I simply dislike them in general :)

^Ah well, I respect that others don't like them and all, I just wish people would realize that not just teenage girls like them. I became a fan of VK when Dir en grey was still visual, so I'm used to the old-school aspect of VK. I also like the eroguro kei bands like MUCC, Merry and cali≠gari. :)

stardusties 28th February 2009 07:26 AM

I believe that music (....not the music just for sheer enjoyment <3 cuz that's nice.) is worth it if either the singer has an amazing voice, there are just captivating lyrics (especially if the singer writes the songs), or if the actual music is just so creative an out of the ordinary that you can't hepl but be amazed.

everyone else......I think those people are overrated. Hannah Montana for instance, she has an okay voice but...it's just okay (I personally like it but....her range sucks. It's like she sings the same 4 notes all the time), people are bending over backwards just to buy a lunchbox with her face on it at Target(r)....that's ridiculous

U-GO-BOY 28th February 2009 02:07 PM

Mr. Children, ARASHI, KAT-TUN, Coldplay, P!nk, Katy Perry, Kylie Minogue, Linkin Park, Madonna, Muse, Placebo, Sam Sparro, Wonder Girls (I like some of their songs but they sound HORRIBLE live), Ken Hirai, Miyavi

tanachu 28th February 2009 02:10 PM

^ Just curious, but why do you find Muse overrated? And Ken?

U-GO-BOY 28th February 2009 02:27 PM

Muse = I listened to their BHAR album and the only track I liked was "Supermassive Black Hole".. I don't know why but I don't find their music that special. Personal opinion kay?
Ken Hirai = I find his songs sound all the same.. they're all bland ballads (with exceptions like POP STAR, Kimi wa Su.te.ki,...) and I don't like his voice

tanachu 28th February 2009 06:17 PM

Obviously it's your opinion, that's why I asked you kay? Although judging based on one album is a bit unfair, just like it would be unfair for someone to judge Ayu based on one album I would think.

koumori 4th March 2009 09:45 AM

I think The Jonas Brothers are way overrated. =/

Their fangirls go crazy for them...and none of their songs are even good. XD I would understand if they had a one-hit wonder, but I don't think they have...

Also, McFly don't do anything for me. XD
