[article] Ayumi on way to big screen debut

Quote:

SHE can sing, but can she act?

After announcing her split from her long-time boyfriend, J-pop queen Ayumi Hamasaki is now eyeing a movie career.

As if emulating her idol Madonna's music-to-film crossover, the 29-year-old has reportedly accepted a movie offer.

Ayumi's big screen debut will come more than a decade after a short and forgettable acting stint on TV, before she found fame as a pop singer.

No details have been released yet, but the movie is apparently part of a plan to celebrate her 10th anniversary on the music scene next year, reported Ming Pao Daily.

But again: Can Ayumi act?

Mr James Kang, marketing director of Warner Music Singapore, which distributes Ayumi's albums, believe she will do well. 'She has expressive eyes and probably the strongest screen presence among the Japanese stars,' he told The New Paper.

He also cited her new music video for her CD single Glitter/Fated.

The story is that she arrives in Hong Kong for promotions and falls in love with a local bodyguard (Shawn Yue). But tragedy strikes when he dies in a motorbike accident, leaving her weeping in a wedding dress.

NATURAL ON SCREEN

Mr Kang said: 'She looks like she has genuine chemistry with Shawn and she is natural.'

But J-pop fan Atiqa Boon Yadi thinks that Ayumi's breakdown scene is 'not so natural'.

'You can see she's acting... I'm sure she can do better than that,' said the 17-year-old student.

Still, she looks forward to seeing Ayumi play a role that is different from her image in music videos. 'If she plays a policewoman in an action film... that would be interesting.'

Mr Kang, however, suggested 'power woman' roles for Ayumi, since she is 'such a strong female model'.

A fashionista like Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw in Sex And The City would also suit the J-pop trendsetter, he added.

Incidentally, Ayumi's actor-rocker ex-boyfriend Tomoya Nagase, also 29, will reportedly star in a new period drama in which he falls for a proud and competitive singer - traits that aptly describe Ayumi.

Ayumi announced their breakup on her website on 13 Jul.

Talk had it that when she surprised Tomoya by moving out of the apartment they shared, he stayed on for another week hoping she would change her mind.

According to Shukan Shincho magazine, Ayumi ended the seven-year relationship because she failed to force Tomoya into marrying her a few months ago. It claimed she was pregnant and had to get an abortion.

It said she was frequently spotted at a famous hospital and once burst into tears. The hospital spokesman declined comment.

But, it seems the couple are still friends - as Ayumi wrote on her website. They were spotted having a meal together in Tokyo on 14 Jul - just a day after Ayumi made their split public - albeit with another celebrity, Yoshihiko Inohara of boy band V6.

Although Tomoya is yet to comment, Ayumi went online again, after tabloid magazines went to town with speculations about their break-up.

Quoting the self-penned lyrics of her old song Winding Road, she wrote that she had chosen the path herself and she did not regret her actions.

'No matter what others say, I hope to fulfil the promise I had made with all of you, I'm only telling you the truth.'

Instead of tainting her image, the break-up has apparently boosted her popularity.

Glitter/Fated, her 41st single, entered the Oricon chart at No1 last week and sold 50,000 copies in just four days. It is out in stores here.
Shukan Shincho is a tabloid.

Kodayumi 25th July 2007 11:38 AM

Wootness, this would be good, if she acts...and if this article is true :D

ayumisrael 25th July 2007 11:41 AM

I would like to see ayu acting and she would be awesome at that!

But I don't think it's true ^_^.

freedreamer 25th July 2007 11:46 AM

i think she acted pretty well in Distance..and yea, the crying...she can do better haha...

this is BIGGG news...cant wait to hear more!..but does that mean, later singles?

AyuHamasaki01 25th July 2007 12:00 PM

I would love to see her act

(OMG! HE DIED IN FATED!!!!! / sorry)

anyway, I hope it will be a good movie for her 10th anniversairy! Maybe something like Cherry Girl ~Drama~ (yeah, Koda Kumi). I think that would be cool! :yes

AyUmIXx 25th July 2007 12:04 PM

it's nice to see ayu being on a movie..
but i'm afraid that she will end up with a failure..

~ayu-cake~ 25th July 2007 12:14 PM

I can hear haters right now, saying how bad her acting is.

It's not THAT bad, and if she were put in a role for a movie i'm sure she'd be taught how to act a little better.

I just hope it won't be really embarrassing >_<

edit- Boosted her popularity? Lol. I don't think so.

Yeah me too !! Ayu is so lovely !

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 25th July 2007 12:23 PM

I don't trust anything that can't even get her age right.

It's even from "The New paper", so this atomatically qualifies it as a load of Britney Spears

Maybe they didn't get her age wrong. In some parts of Asia they count years since you're born (you're born with 1 year old). Dunno if that's the case in Singapore 'tho.

I tought she was quite a bad actress in glitter/fated. Does this make me a hater?

Anyway, it makes sense... AVEX is trying hard to get into the music business. Plus, AVEX held a constest about a J-pop movie script like last year, didn't they? And Koda Kumi said about a surprise in the share-holder concert... you never know...

qwerty 25th July 2007 01:12 PM

I thought Ayumi said that she hated to act. :shrug Maybe she had a change of heart? Nonetheless, it's pretty hard to trust tabloids. I'm not going to believe this until avex officially confirms it.

AyUmIXx 25th July 2007 01:32 PM

she doesn't suit to be an actress..really..
not that i hate her.. i adore her so so so much..
but just.. i don't want her to fail..
to listen to her songs and she performs have made my days!

No =/

I didn't think her acting was perfect either.

Libriya 25th July 2007 02:37 PM

Yeah, she's not a professional actress and if she'll act in some movie there will be poeple who can teach her.
Also in DISTANCE LOVE she acted pretty well, especially fated-part.
I want to see her in some dorama or movie, BUT... please not Cherry girl-like!!! (it was stupid). -__- IMO

yatsuda 25th July 2007 02:40 PM

I don't know... a part of me wants to see her act in a movie. But I also think that she should probably stick to singing (she wasn't all that great in glitter/fated, nor sinking moon).

Neo Daydream 25th July 2007 03:02 PM

i hope the upcoming movie part is true

but i hope she did not get an abortion at any time...

ayumixfan 25th July 2007 03:07 PM

Oh I want to see ayu act, even if it will fail XD I think its worth a shot =)

Bazaa 25th July 2007 03:12 PM

I don't think an acting career will go well for her =/ Oh well, as long as she still releases music, or trades her music for acting, I'm happy.

madonna's acting career didn't go so well either, but she still does it from time to time. lol.

i'm looking forward to it at least. :yes

fallen_crystal_h 25th July 2007 03:28 PM

Glad to hear that she is going to act....i'm sure she can be a good actress in future...

s1012h 25th July 2007 03:30 PM

i'd rather her stay with music

Beauty4123 25th July 2007 03:36 PM

interesting. i hope ayumi does get a chance to act again.

remember this is a tablod... i don't think that's true

but i wish she enters the "big screen" soon... ^^

tokyoxjapanxfan 25th July 2007 03:55 PM

i doubt her breakup made her MORE popular...everyone already knows who she is...haha, but anyway, thanks for the article :) if it's true, i hope the movie is good, i hope her acting is good, and i hope it's not criticised to the point where she becomes a joke, ex. britney spears in crossroads.

panda87 25th July 2007 03:56 PM

oooo acting. i think she'll do good... if she still has that spark like in her Tsuki ni Shizumu short film. i thought she was FANTASTIC in acting in that film.

hope it's true... thanks for the article!

zoomzoom 25th July 2007 04:11 PM

Very interesting!

Sommernacht~ 25th July 2007 04:17 PM

mmh... although I think it'd be cool, she'll always stay "the singer" for me and it'd be strange if she really started acting again because for me, the actress Ayu is a child. so I'm rather contra...

voltron 25th July 2007 04:21 PM

This article was horribly written. It jumps from point to point with no cohesion...I can't take it seriously.

And let's hope she's not trying to have a Madonna film career...that would mean tons of horrible performances which are almost all critically blasted. We want Ayu to be successful. :thud

Dark Eiri 25th July 2007 04:45 PM

Well, she just needs to learn how to properly "cry".
Since HANABI ~episode II~ till Love Distance, she still can't act it properly =/

Zemus 25th July 2007 04:51 PM

I like the movie "Like Grains of Sand" from 1995 where Ayu acted, I think she was great there :) But that was way back. Somehow it would be a bit strange see her in a movie nowadays.

Dustie 25th July 2007 05:19 PM

I saw two movies with her, she did great. I hope she can still pull off the sensitivity and naturality like she did years ago, just got to dig it out.

Raiu-Ayu 25th July 2007 05:29 PM

What are you people saying?? ayu is a great actress!!! I saw in Like Grains of Sand and she should have won an award for that performance! She was so perfect. She can act so well, even when she just has to sit there in silence. She kinda pulls you into the mood

XxCaRoLcHaNxX 25th July 2007 06:00 PM

ooh acting..i would like to c her in a recent real movie.

BoBo 25th July 2007 06:10 PM

As a big fan of asian movies i really want to see my favorit singer in a movie :) go ayu!

Zemus 25th July 2007 06:23 PM

Would you mind telling what the other movie is please? I have only seen Like Grains of Sand. :)

Cyria 25th July 2007 06:30 PM

I hope she'll continue to concentrate on her music and acts only in her PVs.

Peger 25th July 2007 06:38 PM

I'm really excited for this, I think Ayu would be good in a movie. I'd love to see her in a Sex in the City -esq movie, and she could do the theme song too!

Uemarasan 25th July 2007 06:39 PM

Actresses in Japan do have a higher chance of longevity than pop singers.

I just wish Ayu would stay in the entertainment business for a long long while! Maybe acting will give her that opportunity. Or she should switch to enka stat :P

I find her crying convincing :P Particularly in Heaven.

How does one cry properly in the first place? First one tear from the left eye. Then from the right? Haha! I'm kidding :)

Namie 25th July 2007 06:42 PM

Ayu acting..... Im not sure what to think about that..... I didnt think her acting was that great in glitter/fated and in that moon movie...

Bigtop 25th July 2007 06:48 PM

I don't know if she can do well, but I think she can. She'll give it a try.

voltron 25th July 2007 07:03 PM

I agree about the crying! Momentum looked awful!

jon_the_d 25th July 2007 08:49 PM

I think some of you guys must never have seen that many people cry.....

seriously...how do you know how someone cries...everyone cries differently...and no-one on here can really claim to have much life experience ....

I think she's good...

Go Ayu!

namiie 25th July 2007 08:53 PM

Wow. Well, um...I really don't know what to think of this. Sorry guys, but I just don't think Ayu is that good an actress. She can take lessons and all, but ultimately I think she should just stick to making music. =\

milky_way 25th July 2007 09:06 PM

I'd rather her stick to singing.

cttncandy 25th July 2007 09:46 PM

this is really exciting, it's good to see she is branching out =D

Raleigh 25th July 2007 11:16 PM

Interesting to see an article that says that it was Tomoya's fault for a change...

Qt Mashi 25th July 2007 11:32 PM

wow acting? i prefer not...but i will support Ayu all the way!

Eigakan 25th July 2007 11:37 PM

mmm this isn't really good news

Raleigh 26th July 2007 12:20 AM

Right now acting might be a good way to revive her popularity. Many J-Pop singers are partly popular due to their acting career too.

JinHamasaki 26th July 2007 12:30 AM

If she was to have a movie, I don't want a sad romantic movie.

A action packed movie with Ayu kicking butt a la Startin' would be hot. One of her outfits can be the Panasonic commercial with "Real me" except she would kick those guards and dog with her 6" platform shoes :).

minna 26th July 2007 12:37 AM

I don't know, I think that would be great^^
Well will see nope??

slowmoth 26th July 2007 12:42 AM

*_* I die for seeing Ayu acting in a non-herself-produced-movie.

tinta_chan 26th July 2007 12:56 AM

I would like to see ayu acting and she would be awesome at that!

Chandrachan 26th July 2007 01:09 AM

I think that Ayu would do good in a movie like Mika Nakashima, Gackt and Hyde - just give her a chance

Arigatou for the article!! ^^

mui-gei-tal 26th July 2007 02:30 AM

i have a feeling she would do good acting! im looking forward to see the queen on screen! thanks for the news!

maxikot 26th July 2007 07:01 AM

Can't wait to see Ayu on screen :) Great thing for anniversary, I'll support Ayu and wish her best couse she is hard-worker and she will do her best. And I don't thing her previous crying scenes were artificial. Go Ayu ;)

WillofDusk 26th July 2007 07:39 AM

Did someone actually see Ayu act? That movie like grains of sand showed a lot of potential of an actress in Ayu.

And the fact that she cries bad, because everyone has never seen her cry in the real world.
HEAVEN, momentum and fated are great PVs because of the crying scene.

Mirai Noah 26th July 2007 08:00 AM

It will be interesting to see if this turns out to be true.

TITANIC 26th July 2007 10:31 AM

i'm not sure if she want act again

angelwing886 27th July 2007 02:47 AM

I would like to see ayu act. She was an actress before became an singer any way.

Namie 27th July 2007 10:15 AM

If she is going to act she wont have much to say about the movie and how things should been done coz she is not the producer. I wonder if thats ok with ayu... she's always been in charge.

pUrpLeSn0w 27th July 2007 12:40 PM

lolz i'd luuurrvveee to see her act!!!
now still young better to try new stuffs right.. XD

Well she'll probably have a say though due to her status.

alternarist 27th July 2007 01:49 PM

i trust ayu to do her best in everything and she will not disappoint her fans!! :)

extepan 28th July 2007 01:38 AM

it's great to see her act. oh, the latter part of the article is already posted by me :) http://www.ahsforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61911

SunshineSlayer 28th July 2007 05:12 AM

I actually didn't think she was half bad in her early days as an actress, but she seemed to fit dark roles best.

Also, it's not true that this would be her big screen debut. Nagisa no Sindbad and Sumomomo were definitely a theatrical releases and Ladies probably was as well.

LacusClyne 29th July 2007 02:10 AM

about her age, in asia countries we count by the year. and since this article is EXACTLY THE SAME as the local paper, i'll say the age is right

for example, if you were born on Oct and will be turning 20 years old, the local people normally will say you'll 20 years old(even you had not yet turn 20)

I would love to see Ayumi acts again after quite some time. But please, not Koda kUmi's cherry girl, it sux to the bottom. Koda Kumi can't act.

Yeah, I hope it would be something serious... I don't whant Ayu to play a role of cute, stupid spygirl -__-

sitara 29th July 2007 10:42 AM

i don'T think this is true....she said about sinking into the moon was very tiresome, and yes, her acting didn't look that good, also not in distance love...

she's okay in pvs, but i don't think she likes acting that much.

RadicalEd_IV 1st August 2007 04:47 AM

"...but can she act?"

I dont get why people keep saying that. I saw her in 'Like grains of sand' and she was really good. in fact I pretty much forgot it was Ayu. that was all the way back in 1995, so I kno she can do great now. and isn't she 28??
and another thing, is that whole abortion thing true? I never heard anything about this before, so until I see a pic of her going in or coming out of a clinic, Im not so sure I believe it.

I think the abortion thingy is those reporters trying to "earn a living thus cook up a silly-&-totally-lame story" which have been made on no grounds.. >.<

& abt the "...but can she act?" qns, it suddenly seems to me like as if it's the person who cant act..fancy "pouring cold water" at ayu..i hate it when there's discrimination involved. :eviltongu:eviltongu:eviltongu:eviltongu:eviltongu

evechoco 2nd August 2007 01:46 AM

i think ayu can act, cant wait if she debut on big screen

TuNaRoLl1024 2nd August 2007 11:31 PM

i like her acting... no she's not perfect but look at it this way- she never made a point to become a singer until she was discovered and now she's the biggest music artist in japan.

i hope she didn't have an abortion...
