The Official Jay Chou Thread

It's about time someone made an official Jay Chou discussion thread!! I'm lazy so I will copy pasta some info about him from his last.fm page:

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/7346/61297ss1.jpg
Last.fm wiki info
周杰倫 (Jay Chou), born January 18, 1979 in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in Linkou, Taiwan, is a popular Taiwanese musician whose music focuses primarily on R&B, rap, and balladry. He is known for his innovative usage of combining both Western and Chinese music styles to produce a fresh sound that is quite unlike what is produced in mainstream Taiwanese pop, and also unique lyrics which touch on various issues. His unique sound has gained enormous recognition throughout Asia, most notably Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan, as well as amongst the Chinese diaspora in the West.

Some basics
-He's been playing piano since the age of 4.
-He began his career by writing songs for popular artists like Jolin Tsai and Vivian Hsu.
-He's done collaborations with singers like Jacky Wu and Coco Lee (ex: He sang Dow Man Dan with Coco Lee; thanks CREA.tive!)
-He's more of a composer/arranger than a lyricist; he occasionally writes his own lyrics but almost all of the time he writes the musical instrumental scores to his songs. He often works with lyricist Vincent Fang.
-His style is usually R&B/hip-hop/pop.
-He released his first album, "Jay" in 2000. Since then, he has been consistent with his releases; he completes one album per year.
-He is one of the few artists whose songs go beyond the theme of love; he's sung about everything from family to pressing social issues like urbanization of the countryside, drug addictions to personal topics like coming of age, the paparazzi and school failures. He also sings about sports and martial arts and other varied subjects.
-He starred in movies such as "Initial D" and "Curse of the Golden Flower".

I personally think he's great; his compositions are always top-notch and his lyrics, heartfelt. He has a very soothing voice; some people think he mumbles too much but I find it ethereal, hehe. I think he's really similar to Ayu in that he's one of the most popular/powerful musicians in his country and goes beyond love in his music. He's definitely worth a listen!

My favorite songs are "Qing Tian", "Qi Li Xiang", "Fa Rue Xue", "Ye Qu", "An Hao", and "Yi Fu Zhi Ming". :yes

LacusClyne 29th July 2007 02:47 AM

he will be coming to Singapore this monday to promote 'Secret', a movie he directed and acted in.

see if i'm able to smuggle some pics for you.

CREA.tive 29th July 2007 02:52 AM

Jaaaaaaay:heart I really love this guy but the only news I hear of these days are about movies (except for Secret):(

edit: You could add that he sang Dow Man Dan with the popular Coco Lee:D

cloud♥honey 29th July 2007 09:44 PM

Yay, I haven't seen this thread one. I like his songs. The EP "Secret" is totally damn amazing! The song "A Secret I Can't Tell" is a perfect ballad!

Added that fact! :D And yeah, mostly it's been movie stuff, but he has confirmed that he will be releasing a new album this September!

Oooh, are you attending? Some pics would be great :love

CREA.tive 29th July 2007 11:24 PM

I'm glad he's releasing something soon. I mean, everyone releases at that time:D

I actually think his new song is plain. It didn't have that wow feeling I get every time I listen to a new song:(Nothing can beat Fa Rue Xue anyways haha:D

CREA.tive 30th July 2007 03:35 PM

according to 5music, Jay's new album will be released in November http://www.5music.com.tw/NewCdpre.asp I'm confused:shrug

Hmm, that IS puzzling. Well, I got the September news from Jay-Chou.net, which usually has their info correct, but I guess we'll see! He's released albums in both months before :yes

Lol okay I'm sure Jay-Chou.net is more reliable than 5music. But where did they learn it from? I mean it's not an official forum

Yeah, it isn't but I suppose a lot of their sources are people living in Taiwan who get access to news via music shows and the like? Nothing's official til it comes from Jay's "people" though...I tend to like his September albums more than his November albums, personally. I thought Ye Hui Mei and Still Fantasy are better than November's Chopin and Qi Li Xiang, though all of those albums are fantastic in their own right.

CREA.tive 31st July 2007 01:08 AM

Ye Hui Mei was fantastic:heart I also love November's Chopin. and the Eight Dimensions. Still Fantasy and Fantasy were great as well. The only album that I completely forgot is Qi Li Xiang. Seriously, none of the songs were fantasticamazingawesomemarvelous (Wo De Di Pan was very catchy though, especially the rapping part:D). They were good, nothing more:(

evolusean 31st July 2007 01:10 AM

He is genius. Plain and simple. I was just going through his whole discography today, and there are so few songs that I don't enjoy. Everything is so skilfully crafted. A true artist. I would love to see one of his films, as I haven't yet.

Sakuragirl421 2nd August 2007 06:58 PM

I enjoy most of his songs on all of his albums! It's hard to find such a talented artist these days so I respect him veryyyy much as an entertainer.

I'm going to see his movie next week and the directors in Hong Kong have been talking about just how unique his style is and how he'll be a rising director or whatever. All this hype is going on in HK and in Asia surrounding the movie and the previews look stunning. The plot is so mysterious for once so I'm excited~ <3

Don't forget to post a review:P I saw Curse of the Golden Flower and his acting wasn't that good:( So I'm not sure about his directing skills....

Didn't he direct the short film for "Twilight's Chapter Seven" last year? Or am I remembering it wrong? 'Cause I really enjoyed that piece--it was mysterious and went with the song so well.

Maybe he did, maybe not, I really don't remember:o

Spoiler:
btw, namiie, your set is seriously amazing:heart I love love love it, the colors, blending, everything to it:luv2

Sakuragirl421 14th August 2007 09:17 PM

I watched the movie with my cousin (who is really picky about the movies that he watches) and we both agree that the movie is much better than most people expect it to be.

Jay is the one who came up with the plot and damn, once the movie picks up and you reach towards the end, a lot of stuff starts making sense. It feels like My Sassy Girl for some crazy reason but a lot of people online have compared it to Il Mare (Hollywood equivalent = The Lakehouse)... I don't know what else to say about it besides the fact that I WILL buy the DVD and I already bought the limited edition OST + the poster. <3 Gotta rewatch the movie to understand it better. <3

Waaah, that's good to know. And I love that feeling where you start to figure out the plot as it goes on and everything pieces together....and wow, My Sassy Girl? I seriously don't get that kind of vibe from it, lol, but I'm even more pumped to see it now! I'll have to wait for the DVD release though. :yes

Sakuragirl421 16th August 2007 07:21 PM

It reminds me of My Sassy Girl because towards the end of the second part, all the pieces fall together and you see why The Girl is that way and how she is connected to the guy. ^________^

Did yall know that where the movie is shot (technically not Jay Chou's HS but the school next to it) has now become a tourist attraction of sorts? I've heard that the surrounding area's schools have this Victorian feel just like the school in the movie. <333

mangoo_x3 20th August 2007 05:30 AM

Jay-Chou.net gets their news from news websites and did you know the Double J (Jay & Jolin) are going in direct competition, Jay having his album released late September and Jolin's on October.

:thud:thud:thud:thud:thud

Oh and I kinda created an thread for Jay cause I didn't see this thread, but I have more info on him on that thread if you guys want to know more about MY lovely Jay =]

I also thought he looked weird in that movie. Not surprising though after what they did to the gorgeous Gong Li.

Lol I know. That movie was just weird in general. It was like they put so much thought into making it look nice that all elements of reasonable plot disappeared :laugh

New Jay Chou album Jay Chou On The Run on November 2nd!!!
http://us.yesasia.com/en/prdGrpDept....id-1005064789/

I'm not sure if I like that cover, if it's the real cover....

BTW, a new song is out. I'm currently downloading it and it's available at bww2.

edit: oh my, is Jay going for country music or what?

cloud♥honey 18th October 2007 02:46 AM

Probably the album will leak soon. So I won't download the new song 'cause I'm not his fan a lot, but I'll download the album when it leaks. The cover looks funny and creative but I wanna know the real tracklist.

namiie 18th October 2007 02:51 AM

I thought the exact same thing, CREA.tive! It's like...Jay meets Westerns o_O

lilchan 19th October 2007 11:11 AM

CREA.tive 2nd November 2007 02:49 AM

I finally listened to the album:yes
I :heart the ballad 青花瓷, the rock song 无双 (reminds me of 懦夫 from Ye Hui Mei) and the urban song 扯. The only thing that I don't like about 扯 is the Taiwanese accent of the man in the little talk in the beginning.
Overall, it's a good album in my opinion (except for彩虹:dead2) but nothing beats Ye Hui Mei:D:D:D

firefox 2nd November 2007 05:39 AM

青花瓷 is the best

GURL where have you been all my life XD;; 'Cause I totally agree. My reaction while listening to 彩虹 was literally: O_____O;;

And yes, I think Ye Hui Mei is definitely the most well-rounded album though 8 Dimensions also holds a special place in my heart :D Lately I haven't been liking his albums AS A WHOLE, but rather just individual songs from them. For example, "七里香" was pretty much the only song I liked from that album, and for November's Chopin it was just "髮如雪" and "夜曲". From Still Fantasy I like "夜的第七章" and "心雨" and "白色風車". But for Ye Hui Mei, I like the whole album :D

I get a very rushed sort of vibe from "On the Run" =\

CREA.tive 3rd November 2007 04:00 PM

^ Maybe he was too busy with filming movies or maybe it's because of his new record company JVR music. Or maybe it's both.

hamasaki_edwin 3rd November 2007 07:25 PM

mm guys pls correct me if i'm wrong but i sense wrong tags & song order from the album i downloaded:
01. The Cowboy On The Run (4:31) -> kinda acoustic song
02. Rainbow (2:56) -> country feel
03. Blue And White (4:07) -> typical Jay's ballad with chinese traditional instr.
04. Sunshine Boy (3:50) -> uptempo pop-rock song
05. Dandelion's Promise (4:15) -> another ballad
06. Incomparable (4:00) -> the rap song with dark creepy intro
07. I Don't Deserve (4:56) -> pop ballad kinda song
08. Tear (3:36) -> R n B-ish techno
09. Sweetness (4:00) -> pop song
10. The Longest Movie (4:04) -> piano only instr
anyway, this is another masterpiece from Jay! absolutely better than Still Fantasy!

Now that I think about it, the tracklist is wrong indeed. The Cowboy is busy should be the country song, and Rainbow the ballad.*goes changing song titles* So, the song I strongly dislike is The Cowboy Is Busy (牛仔很忙) and not Rainbow.

cloud♥honey 4th November 2007 01:32 AM

It was what I saw in a lot of sites, the second track is Rainbow and the first is Cowboy Is Very Busy. I thought it was wrong but well I didn't changed it yet.

I liked the album at all except for the ballads. Sunshine Boy is really amazing. The Cowboy Is Very Busy/Second track is amazing too o.o

the order of the songs titles are right but it's just the songs that have been mixed up:yes

Sweet_Ai 4th November 2007 01:53 AM

Wow. I just got into him yesterday, really. I was watching a movie and the player was based in Taiwan so when the movie was over it showed a bunch of other videos to watch. I just happened to click on his and see the video for "我不配" and I had to download it!! I tried the album and pick out 3 other songs I really liked including "青花瓷," "扯," and "甜甜的." He is the only Mandarin artist I have on my iPod.

yukihira 4th November 2007 01:16 AM

I've been a fan of Jay for a few months, he was the second mandarin artist I ever got into (first was Leehom Wang =) ) I adore his music!

DDR ninja 2nd December 2007 12:55 PM

Jay rules!

pommy48 25th April 2008 01:55 AM

aww no one talks here....well the pv for cowboy on the run is really weird @_@

jean-baptiste 2nd November 2009 05:07 AM

bumping.. (sorry >_<)

i just started his music like 2 weeks ago and he has quickly become one of my favorite artists.

i first heard November's Chopin' and i was hooked!! especially Fa Ru Xue/Hair Like Snow.

ive downloaded all his albums but i want to pace myself so i dont get bored of them quickly. so ive only heard his first 3 albums and his 5th one.

so is any news if there will be a new album this year?

ILoveGeniuses 14th June 2010 04:05 PM

I've loved Jay for quite awhile now. What I must admit is the first song i ever heard was Ni Ting De Dao(pardon my spelling) on some AMV on youtube. Loved the song, and at first all I liked was his light ballads, but after awhile I found I took right off with his others after hearing that song he did with Jet Li in that MV. November's Chopin is now my favorite album, but I have and love 'em all. He's just so amazingly talented.

Also, I read that he was going on a World Tour this year. A few years back he came to Toronto, Canada. Does anyone know if he's coming back or not again this year for his 10th Anniversary tour?

Nackar_91 14th June 2010 04:57 PM

I've only just started to listen to him but I'm already hooked. I've only listened to Capricorn so far, because I want to take it slow and only listen to something new once in a while. Mr. Magic is such an awesome track ... who told him it was a good idea to go yodeling? XD

pommy48 14th June 2010 11:43 PM

Wow there's a jay thread? lol i forgot...

I loved that he performed with Jolin at his concert ♥

ILoveGeniuses 14th June 2010 11:43 PM

^which concert was that? I have his 2007 tour and Jolin wasnt in that. I totally love both of them though.

pommy48 14th June 2010 11:45 PM

his world tour right now

ILoveGeniuses 14th June 2010 11:59 PM

^oh cool. happen to know if he'll be stopping into Toronto for the World Tour 2010 at all? Been desperate to know.

pommy48 15th June 2010 12:17 AM

Not sure, I only know the 3 dates in the Taipei Arena~

:teek Omg Jay Chou Thread and I only found about it few seconds ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is my favourite artist along with Ayumi Hamasaki! My copy of Opus 12 is about to come in a few days, can't wait (my first Jay Chou album)!! :D Any fans here to talk???

yoshino 27th January 2014 09:03 AM

I didn't know this thread existed! lol. But no one is chatting here for years already. Omg.

What's his activity now? I love his Secret movie a lot. Jay Chou should come up with a similar movie again. :)

Surreal17 27th January 2014 06:11 PM

^Hmm...to be honest I didn't watch any of his movies yet. Shame on me! I was too focused on his music.
There are news that he's going to release his 13th untitled album this spring. Can't wait! This would be my first Jay Chou album since I became a fan last summer.
My favourites songs are East Wind Breaks, In The Name of The Father, Blacksmith of Milan, Piano Sorrow etc.. Omg, he has dozens of good songs!

Surreal17 5th February 2014 12:08 PM

My copy of Opus 12 (Deluxe Edition) arrived yesterday :D

yoshino 7th February 2014 08:05 AM

^Wow that's great! I didn't get that album though. lol. In fact I like his older works more. Every time when I go singing with my friends, we usually sing his old songs too. haha.

You're right..his old songs are very good but he also has nice new songs...in fact I like his new albums too :))...and omg, the cover for Opus 12 is amazing..I noticed that he doesn't have many fans on AHS unfortunately :no

"Jay Chou to release new album in May, photo of recording in the studio late at night revealed

Last year Jay Chou didn't release an album because he was filming "RooFToP", before the New Year he finished two unusual style new songs, after re-energizing from the New Year holidays, he has found inspiration, he has already started work on the 10th, recording the new album, his good friend Xiao Mai took a photo of him and the producer Michael Lin working in the recording studio, they had serious focus work faces on, he put it online, caring fans noticed the photo was at 3:30 in the morning, their hearts ached, they all left messages hoping he will look after himself, he estimates he will complete the album in April and release in May.

I must partly agree with you. I love his albums up to On The Run era in 2007. All these albums from 2000 to 2007 are masterpieces, espacially Still Fantasy/Ye Hui Mei/November's Chopin albums. After that, I cannot really get into his music. There are a few good songs on every album but albums as such are too mediocre for me.

Me too!! I like his 1st to 5th album. But yet I didn't buy them. Lol. Cos I was into him in 2006. So I thought might as well buy his works from then on. At that time I really like November's chopin a lot!! I would sing almost all the songs in this album at Karaoke with my friends. haha.

Nice to know u, Surreal17. We can chat about Jay chou here and make this thread alive once more. haha. :)

Surreal17 3rd March 2014 09:17 AM

^I was going to say the same thing :)
I can't believe that Jay Chou has so little fans of AHS...I mean, this is the very first thread for such a massive singer like him.
I love a lot of his albums but Common Jasmine Orange must be my favourite. I love the concept of the covers. They are really interesting and different for a singer to do.
In fact, this is what I love the most about him....his unique vision about the world transferred into his music.

yoshino 5th March 2014 01:51 PM

yeah, there's actually so little Jay Chou fans here. In fact I'm kinda sorry not to notice this thread earlier, cos AHS has been more of a Jpop place for me and so I didn't bother about looking up at Cpop here.(Which is only Jay Chou for me btw) lol.

I love the fact that Jay is so talented in creating music, not just for himself but also for others. He's really a unique singer! I'm only not happy that he's actually not the top income rank for Taiwanese singers in 2013 and even behind Show Luo and Jolin Tsai!! -> http://jolinjeneration.canalblog.com.../28456883.html
I thought he should earn more than them!! Okay, maybe cos of not releasing an album last year. :grumpy

Anyway, I don't really like the both of them, just happen to chance upon that Jolin website when searching for the ranking list. lol.

Artists in Taiwan nowadays don't get much money from album sales...
Jolin didn't release an album either in 2013 by the way. Most of their earnings come from events, Tours but most of all endorsements, not album sales.
Whether we like him or not, Show Luo getting first is not surprising at all, considering he's been #1 in popularity and sales for years now! He's earning more and more every year. As for Jolin, she remains the #1 solo female artist, so not surprising either. And she has a billion endorsements, that helps a lot.

Jay Chou's details for his earnings in 2013 if you're interested:
-NT$559,500,000 (14 092 911€ or $18,969,057)
-> 10 ads: NT$400,000,000
-> 37 events: NT$129,500,000
-> Movie: NT$30,000,000
As you can see most of his earnings come from endorsements!

^Wow really!! Thanks for the info! haha.

I think Jay should drop filming a movie. I dun think he can earn much from there and it incurs heavy cost.. Oh I remember he once filmed a drama is it? I think it's quite a horrible work cos just the first episode I dun feel like continuing watching it. I dun know what u guys think. :eyebrow

@ILoveGeniuses - forgot that we already had a thread ))

So, on December 26, 2014 Jay released his 13th studio album entitled Aiyo, Not Bad (simplified Chinese: 哎呦,不错哦; traditional Chinese: 哎呦,不錯哦)

https://mmusicbox.files.wordpress.co...eg?w=600&h=600

The album contains 11 new songs (plus the promotional single ”Extra Large Shoes”) composed as usual by Jay himself, with the majority of lyrics being written by his fellow partner Vincent Fang. They make such a good pair musically.

2. "竊愛" (Qiè Ài / Secret Love)
3. "算什麼男人" (Suàn Shén Me Nán Rén / What Kind of Man)

5. "怎麼了 (feat. 袁詠琳)" (Zěn Me Le / What's Wrong; feat. Cindy Yen)
6. "一口氣全唸對" (Yì Kǒu Qì Quán Niàn Duì / Read them Out in One Breath)
7. "我要夏天" (Wǒ Yào Xià Tiān / I Want Summer; feat. Gary Yang)
8. "手寫的從前" (Shǒu Xiě De Cóng Qián / Handwritten Past)

Jay Chou’s baby’s name revealed – and why he no longer wants 5 kids!

The latest on Jay Chou and Hannah Quinlivan’s soon-to-pop baby, including the romantic reason behind the Taiwanese pop prince’s decision to lay off plans for future children

If Jay has his way, his kid would be called Jay Junior. And hey, he ain’t old, he’s a father, so call him Jielun Gege (“brother”), okay? Aw, adorable.

Here’s what else we know from Chairman Chou’s first sit-down interview since disclosing his Dad-to-be status. The Straits Times and other regional broadsheets report that when pressed for more intel on his imminent heir, the 36-year-old Mandopop monarch smirked and said: “I knew you guys would ask me this. Are you guys ready?” He then unfastened his jacket to show off a shirt emblazoned with an enormous question mark. Always the splashy showman, this one.

So, boy or girl? In another calculated tease, Jay says he’s been busy buying black-coloured #swag to go with his buddies’ gift of a baby-sized Batmobile – but insists his purchasing picks have nothing to do with the infant’s gender: “I like black, and also hope every child or grandchild has the same name, with the same sound but a different word.”

(Chinese entertainment portal Sina.com notes that his proposal to use homonyms was vetoed – not unwisely, we must add! – by Mrs Jay Chou for being way too “weird”.)

In a poignant peek at the man behind the sequined suits and sizzling showtunes, Jay admits that laying eyes upon the first ultrasound scan of his burgeoning baby was “10 times more moving than winning a Golden Melody Award.” Expect his next album to be a rave record of sorts: “I want to tape my child's heartbeat and make dance music."

And in the sweetest soundbite yet, Jay says he’s relinquished his dream of siring five kids – because he’s seen how pregnancy has taken a toll on model mummy Hannah Quinlivan: “I see how tired my wife is. We will just have enough children.” Aw, Jay Chou: Crooner, caring companion and #BestHusbandEver.”

I forgot to mention here that he.s expecting his first child this year. I.m really glad for him, he always seemed like a good familist.
It is also mentioned in the article that he.d like to do a dance record with his baby.s heartbeats printed on it. Cool idea Jay!

Jay Chou will release his 14th studio album entitled "Jay Chou's Bedtime Stories" on June 24, 2016.

"Mandopop Megastar Jay Chou has finally announced the upcoming release of his new album Jay Chou’s Bedtime Stories to the excitement of his many fans worldwide.

Jay Chou’s Bedtime Stories will be Chou’s 14th album, and will be released on the 24th of June and available for pre-order on the 8th of June.

Chou’s concept behind Jay Chou’s Bedtime Stories has much to do with the recent birth of his four month year old daughter Hathaway, inspiring Chou to use the album to mimic the concept of him telling a story through his music.

Not only will the album include “Past Life Lover”, a song dedicated to daughter Hathaway, but it will also include the theme song for Chou’s latest Hollywood flick, Now You See Me 2 which he wrote for the movie.

Just like many of Chou’s other albums, the packaging will be a step above the rest, with the entire album packaged as a story book with fairytale-like embossments across the front.

Some versions of the album also come with a USB in the shape of an owl which is also a musical box-like contraption! If the album is pre-ordered, it also comes with a nice pair of ear plugs in case the rooster crows a little too early for your liking some mornings."

"Past Life Lover" is the first single from "Jay Chou's Bedtime Stories". It has a really interesting history, being written and produced by Chou after a simple piano melody sung by his 4-months old daughter.

Bedtime Stories full mv
Second Promotional Single

Damn, the visuals are amazing! And the song is really fresh and has those little interesting details that makes his music unique. It seems like he's "back" and hopefully the full album won't disappoint me. His previous album is my least favourite from him so I'm glad right now.

Also, the mv reminds me of IU's You & I mv with all the fantasy theme going on.

Surreal17 13th June 2016 07:43 PM

This ost song is also going to be in the new album. It has a really catchy melody and I like the electro-ethnic fusion but somehow I don't think it fits the concept of the album.
