Translation by HiruNoKaze:

My frank resolution for this year.

The truth is, last year, I had an ear check-up, my diagnosis being that my left ear has completely lost all function and that there is no treatment.

Even so, I want to keep being a singer.

That's why I'll keep singing as long as this remaining right ear works, to its limit.

I won't quit.

I won't make excuses.

As a professional, I will sing the best songs for you*.

I don't really like the word "ganbaru," but...

I will ganbaru**!!!!! At all costs!!!!!!!!!

Until that day, someday...

*Here she uses the word for "everyone," but I think it is better translated as "you." Also, the literal meaning is "I will definitely deliver the best songs to you." for reference.

**ganbaru means persevere or try hard, and it is a word very commonly used in Japanese. For example, as well as being used to mean "try hard," it is used in the same situations that "good luck" would be used in English.

This is a pretty shocking news.. hope i didn't translate wrongly..

Woah. The annual tours she does must be taking its' toll. I feel sorry for her.

ayumisrael 4th January 2008 05:59 AM

OMG... poor ayu =\
That's what a true singer is...

truehappiness 4th January 2008 05:59 AM

So now we know why her singing was so... off. O_O

I think I'm gonna cry, seriously. D:

zoomzoom 4th January 2008 06:01 AM

Sad news, but she's very strong for not letting it get to her. Very admirable.

Neo Daydream 4th January 2008 06:01 AM

omigosh. i'm like in shock! poor Ayu!

VAL 4th January 2008 06:04 AM

OMFG!! :(!!! SO SAD :(

987654321987 4th January 2008 06:06 AM

gosh.... so, the secret tour is the last one that she can sing in tune.....
it is a shame. i hope she wil protect her right ear as carefully as she can.

cttncandy 4th January 2008 06:13 AM

OH Geez! Poor Ayu, I admire her so much for continuing on despite of this problem. She is such a fighter and I love her so much for that!

Ayu pleease get some rest!!!

milky_way 4th January 2008 06:14 AM

I admire Ayu's perseverence (sp?) in this difficult time, and will always continue to support her :heart

UHPlus 4th January 2008 06:16 AM

that's only one solution, seek profession aids and reduced the amount of concerts she had...

maybe once a years with only 5/6 shows...then what will really help her from worsen her working ear...and this will also depend on the avex whether they allowing her to lose so much profit from her concerts and appearances... u know avex is a money hungry company ^_^

Ugh, I'm really crying like woaaah over this. WHY IS IT GETTING TO ME? D:

UHPlus 4th January 2008 06:21 AM

maybe she can be like hikki... hardly appearing for tv lives...hardly have any concerts and never appear for kohaku..

but she's still damn popular and sell like crazy...why can't ayumi be like hikki?

summersnow 4th January 2008 06:23 AM

OMG!!! this is sooo sad!!!
Ayu, pls take good care of yourself!!

ImpactBreaker 4th January 2008 06:23 AM

Well, this time (in this thread only) I agree with UHPLUS. I hope ayu won't go "suicidal" pperforming like crazy until she goes completely deaf. Hopefully she'll give some rest at least to concerts and those stuff that deals with too much noise.

Maybe Ayu would gain a little more popularity if she wasn't seen everywhere 24/7 :shrug I agree, if her hearing is bad, she shouldn't push it. I don't think it would be too bad if she limited her performances and stuff. I know her fans love her, but she needs to take caution too.

ayu_fan929 4th January 2008 06:24 AM

I agree. She needs to take care of herself first by easing up on the touring.

truehappiness 4th January 2008 06:26 AM

I think the only reason Ayu does it is because she wants to get out there and do it. She can't not work just because of this, at least that's what she seems like..

Most of Japan isn't going to be aware of this, unless it makes some sort of huge news-thing in Japan..

Aggar 4th January 2008 06:26 AM

why my lovely Ayu ? ? ? :weep Ayu don't give up .. I'm wait you . .err . . we are with you . . . wishing nothing would happen to you . .

ayu_fan929 4th January 2008 06:27 AM

But I think she needs to realize that her fans will be even more upset if the problem becomes larger. I'm not saying completely not tour, just do fewer than what she's doing right now.

ImpactBreaker 4th January 2008 06:29 AM

I wonder how much impairment is there in her right ear? If there isn't any, then acoustic trasuma couldn't explain it much, since it usually affects both ears.

I totally agree.
I swear some people take Ayu for granted. A single every now and then. An album most likely to come out every year. Summer songs, winter ballads. It's always (almost) the same thing.

I feel sad for Ayu. I know she does that because she truly loves singing, and she loves her fans. She doesn't need the money anymore (although it's definitely a big plus). I wish that right now she would just, take a break. Maybe celebrate her 10th anniversary and be gone for a good year, maybe a year and a half.
Travel, have fun, meet people. To make a long story short, she needs new experiences to write lyrics about.

After that, she could come back with a smashing hit, or an average song. We all would really treasure it and cut the "ew, I hate the new Ayu" attitude off.

my thought exactly

Kikaru 4th January 2008 06:33 AM

Wow...I heard a lot of western artist (indie rock bands especially) losing the hearing, but it's rare with Jpop.

I wonder what's the cause though. Is it just trauma or something else added?

ayumisrael 4th January 2008 06:34 AM

We'll probably never know, we just know that is started from the DOME TOUR 2001 rehearsals (the whole ear thingy)...

there's no reason for you to word it like that.
people are free to express their opinions here.
regardless, we should all just hope ayu takes care of herself.

but i wonder if a hearing aid would be of any use now...

It happens with all the good artists. Actors get the Oscars, musicians get the hearing loss. Look at Beethoven. Teee hehehe.

Spoiler:
I was kidding. Just to cheer things up in such a blue thread. Okay, now let's be sad for Ayu again.

Now seriously. I remember there was an interview a long time ago where she actually talked about her problem. Is that correct or I'm going grazy?

truehappiness 4th January 2008 06:40 AM

She talked about it in the NTV 2003 interview about her life for like 10-15 minutes?

starlett 4th January 2008 06:41 AM

wasn't her hearing partly damaged a long time ago? maybe with time and all the performing she does, it just got to the point where there was just nothing left for her one ear to produce.

this is sad news. :(

Aggar 4th January 2008 06:42 AM

I really want to cry now . . why is that happen to her?? no fair . .

Yeah, but people like Beethoven are few and far in between, or else we wouldn't really care.

Okay, off topic, but ear problems are weird. My mom sometimes have hummings in her ear out of the blue. I wonder if it chronically became worse or it was better but resurfaced and gotten worse.

Yeah, and was it the reason she stopped dome tours? :shrug Something like that... but anyways, I seriously hope she can reduce the amount of concerts, maybe a couple or two.

So now I will know that the upcoming performances I will probably hear, that this was the reason why she has been quite off.

Ganbatte, Ayumi!

~Amy~ 4th January 2008 06:49 AM

Awww man, so that's why she's been singing kinda funny. e.e
That sucks, I think she should do less perfomances. I hope she'll be alright. ;_;

Ayumi_Hamasaki902 4th January 2008 06:53 AM

I hope everything works out for her though in the end and she doesn't have to stop her singing for it and that there is something that they can do for her other ear to prevent it from it following the same fate ; ;.

minna 4th January 2008 06:54 AM

omg
I feel so sad for her, poor ayu :(
she won't completly hear anymore....omg
but what about her right ear, is it damage too??

erin1m 4th January 2008 06:57 AM

She went deaf in her left ear? Doesn't Peco usually stand on her left during concerts? (Sorry, couldn't help it.)

Seriously though, that's awful news, but Ayu's resolve is just incredible. Ganbatte Ayu!

DA1SUK1DAY01691 4th January 2008 06:57 AM

Yeah, it's been affected since she started using actual instruments at her concerts, since she did quite a few at the time. I always thought it was deaf, but to know it's not treatable is bad. It could explain the lack of CREA material lately, yet she was able to at least compose "Will" not too long ago (which is an effortless masterpiece, IMO).

It may not explain her tone-deafness, but it does explain her dwindiling lack of TV appearances.

@UHPlus: Remember that everyone isn't a fan-club member. Unless press actually hears wind of this, there is a great possibility that it won't get out to the general public; or another option is Ayu announcing it during an interview.

but remember there's A LOT of japanese who are in her fan-club...and many are in the news/magazine/papers business...

they can even take private photos of ayumi drunk in a gay bar why can't they know she's deaf? .make sense?

truehappiness 4th January 2008 07:02 AM

She did Will with DAI so it's possible she contributed about 25%, while he did a majority of the composition.

Well the break-up news was also only available to both Ayu's and Nagase's FC site at first I think...

s1012h 4th January 2008 07:11 AM

i've always thought she needed a break
she can still make music, but she doesn't need to have the whole "OMG I NEED TO RELEASE A SINGLE WITHIN 4 MONTHS"
relax for a while, go for a vacation, look for inspiration, and then go back to japan and just chill at home, cooking and writing lyrics
but i have to say, this is her 10th year, i don't think she'll stop in 2008
i hope she does, and even if she doesn't, i hope she does in 2009

Aggar 4th January 2008 07:12 AM

don't blame the princess . . she just did what she can .. LOL

ayumisrael 4th January 2008 07:12 AM

Well... ayu doesn't decide those stuff... avex pretty makes her plans and schedules... she just brings the lyrics, recording, performing and suggesting/producing...
I hope that avex will go easy on her.

the angel song 4th January 2008 07:13 AM

NOOOO...What bad news to hear at the start of the new year...she needs to take a break. This has been a problem since 01 I believe, and stuff like her always fighting through her troubles makes me want to slap every person who badmouths her. For someone as famous and topdog such as herself, she shows an amazing amount of dedication and loyalty to fans and staff. But I don't want her going deaf for us...

Reading that seriously made me cry. I need some tissues.

Poor Ayu. ;____; I'm sort of speechless, but I do hope she preserves her hearing in her right ear. This is her 10th year, what awful news to start it...but, maybe she can do her tour this year, and then take a break. Or not even take a break, just slow down and release stuff every once in a while, not try to rush everything and get everything done quickly.

Ayumiko 4th January 2008 07:25 AM

oh ayu....:( I knew she demaged her left ear but didn't think she would be completely deaf in that ear. I admire her for her courage and her will to continue to sing for us. I will cherish all the concerts and tv lives from now on till one day she can't perform anymore :( this thought makes me so sad...I know there will be one day ayu will retire but I don't want her to because she cannot hear anymore. :(

the price of continuing to satisfy her fans' desire to see her as often as possible

I would like to humbly make the following edit to the English translation. Many thanks to babamon for the translation.

First line would be better translated as
"This is my frank resolution for this year."

I have checked this with my Japanese friend, so I believe this is reliable. Jim Breen's dictionary also supports this meaning of "bucchakeru." I'll continue to read through the whole thing and do my best.

Aggar 4th January 2008 07:37 AM

this is before the part where she says "Because I will persevere! At all costs!" which babamon translated it as "Must ganbatte!!!! Must!!!!!!"

Eigakan 4th January 2008 08:01 AM

It's sad, poor ayu, I think that her personal health comes before her fans, she should rest until she's feeling better.

so.. it's getting worsen for 6 years and it becomes completely deaf..

But tell me about it. I'm just like you; I get psycho crazy when I have water in my ear, even for only ten minutes. I wouldn't be able to live peacefully ever again to go deaf in one ear...

I give her TONS AND TONS of credit. The young age of 29, deaf in one ear, and continuing to cater to fans with a handicap. A TOTAL fighter.

T___T
oh no..
i've heard about her ear before and now i have heard about news she want stop singing until her ear healthy again..owww.......

its mean she cancel asia tour or not??

HiruNoKaze 4th January 2008 08:35 AM

sorry guys! I mistranslated the bit about hearing loss in the left ear. It is indeed complete hearing loss. I edited my post above

I remember one of her tours that she did, *It was in 2002 I believe* she had a really bad sore throat and was sick with a cold but yet she still went out there and gave it her all. I find that really admirable and inspiring to me. Cause I don't see a lot of american singers doing that but she just goes out there even when she's sick, and give it everything 100% even with a cold.

Yeah. I'm proud of her.

I don't see how she can handle some of the criticisms that people give her though D:

Just to remind you of her dedication, during ASIA TOUR, she sprained her leg, and still did a concert with the leg injured. The same thing happened at DT01 when she fell..

BigAyuFan 4th January 2008 08:40 AM

wow i feel sad to think of her saying all of this with a smile on her face.i wonder how long her ear has been completely deaf.unless

its been bothering her alot lately she wouldent have gone to the doctors.whatever her choice is im behind her 110% and ill keep

on supporting her.but im worryed about how far shes willing to push it.

truehappiness 4th January 2008 08:42 AM

I think she might've known this for quite a while, and she hid it from us.. D:

ruixiong89 4th January 2008 08:46 AM

Oh no ... I'm praying for her now. I hope her right ear NEVER loses its function. What determination from her ...

Wouldn't shock me if she did. Some stars/musicians hide those types of things.

kiseki89 4th January 2008 08:47 AM

I'm utterly shocked by the news.
No wonder some of her songs @ CDL are off..

I'm utterly ashamed of myself.

I don't want my ayu to go deaf.... Please let there be some miracle on her left ear - and the right one better not have problems too....

Here is my translation:
------------------------
My frank resolution for this year.

---------------------------

As much as I will like her to sing the best for us, I want her to be well.

I dont mind her excuses and such... just stop pushing herself so hard...

Chibi_Venus 4th January 2008 08:48 AM

Good for her for wanting to continue! ^^

Thus, I will use the rest of my right ear to sing till it loses its function as well or till its very limit.
Something tells me she would still sing (or something) even if this happened. ;)

dayumi 4th January 2008 08:52 AM

WOW!! Really shocking!!! I'm so sad, but I'm hoping the best for her..

I think she'd even find a way then.

Now that she has lost one of her friends, and her love of seven years.. I think music is all that she has left. I dunno... but maybe Ayu should find another boyfriend soon? D:

Rei Rei 4th January 2008 09:03 AM

This is so sad =(
"My life is music, music is my life..."

We know your passion Ayu. We all hear you! However...
Please take care of yourself Ayu... We all love your music but we all want you to be healthy as well... please protect your right ear carefully!

Ganbatte ne!!! I'll pray for you.
