"ourselves" translation

* I hold you tight
I get touched
I get discouraged
I hold you tight again
I pull myself together
I get prim
You know many faces of mine

This road looks endless
But surely has the end
Only for once
I like to stop on the way
I prepare a way to escape
But it means nothing to me to do so alone
Because you know?
There is nothing but love
That is truly valuable

** So
I show myself
Only to you
Which no one in the world knows
But
I may still have
Some secret sides
You have never seen
Which no one in the world knows

There are so many choices
That I can't make any guess
Where I like to find my way at last
But as we walk side by side
Expecting the same future
I feel nothing is so true as your profile
Because you know?
There is nothing but love
That is valuable in the end

So
Even if no one in the world knows me
I wish you alone
To know me
Yes
Even if no one in the world knows us
We know each other
So well

** repeat
* repeat x 4

The tone of the song doesnt make you think that the song is about what its about. also the name doesnt give anything away either. the translation really wasnt what I thought the song was either!

Thanks Masa for the translation!

shinjite 30th June 2003 04:27 PM

shinji1698 30th June 2003 06:04 PM

thank you! It goes with the video~

masa 30th June 2003 06:12 PM

You are welcome.
I'd like to inform you there is one unclear word in the lyrics --- the first word "gyutto". "Gyutto" means "hold tight", but it's not written which she holds tight. But we usually use "gyutto" mainly in two cases --- "gyutto dakishimeru" (hold someone tight) and "gyutto nigiru" (hold something tight), And I chose the former, considering the content of the lyrics. But there is a little possibility that it's different from her intention.

I get prim, what does that mean? Thank you masa, you are the best !! Be the way, wouldn't it be a transliteration? Not translation? Just a guess...... Anyways, thank you very much !!

masa 30th June 2003 07:14 PM

In my dictionary, "tsun to suru" means "be prim". There is also a phrase "assume a prim attitude". Aren't they common English? Or can't I use "get" in this case?

I'd never heard that word before :laugh

Sutaru 30th June 2003 08:32 PM

woah thanks so much i was wandering what the lyrics to that was :D

y2687 30th June 2003 08:34 PM

Lol when the video first came out, I kinda figured the lyrics would have nothing to do with it. But in a way, the video and the song both have very deep meanings. I love the song! :D go ayu! :thumbsup

Masamune 30th June 2003 10:50 PM

Arigatoooo!!

Beautiful and Sad song!!!
Totally Ayumishh!!!!

Delirium-Zer0 1st July 2003 11:14 PM

I'd heard the word "prim" before but only in the phrase "prim & proper"... it's an older english word that isn't in the vernacular anymore. I knew what it meant, though it does sound odd in the context. anyway, the lyrics remind me VERY much of the lyrics in "End of the World", anyone else?

Neo Daydream 2nd July 2003 03:35 AM

Really? Then I might have to change the word. Do you have any suggestion instead of "prim"? The Japanese phrase "tsun to suru" expresses cool and refusing attitude, but looks somewhat pretty.

ayutopian 7th July 2003 03:20 AM

'ourselves' is a combination of J-pop and R&B... with ayu's unique style!!! I like it very much!!

The song is awesome... ayu has written another masterpiece (Notice: credits to the lyrics... as well, give credits to BOUNCEBACK for the music!!!) Thanks for the translation!!

xiaohui 8th July 2003 03:29 PM

ya thanx a lot i like the lyrics n ayu has done a great job again!!

CREA 10th July 2003 02:04 AM

prudish, pedantic, formal, proper are all synonyms of prim. But prim fits perfectly, your translation is fine :)

destiny_ayu 10th July 2003 09:20 AM

Thnx for the translation

I have two suggestions, even if they are not suitable they may at least give you new ideas:

"I regain my composure". Lacking in meaning but fits perfectly into the song.
or
"Back to my independent self". This conveys the meaning much better and uses a common Ayu theme/word (independent), but might be too long/stray too far from the original words. Option to add "I'm" or "Now I'm" in front to keep to the song format.

Hope you find this useful...your work is always very readable and is much appreciated Masa.

Thank you for for always translating Ayu's songs masa.

The phrase "get prim" is not very common in everyday spoken english but I have heard it before. I think your choice of words is fine.

-=[ZENO]=- 14th July 2003 02:01 PM

thanks grantit ! i've find them now... :p

Ryoko 19th July 2003 06:29 PM

Thanks.. though it's an interesting word(prim) to put in a song....

masa 19th July 2003 07:27 PM

After all, I decided to leave the word (prim) as it is, as it seems there is no other word short and suitable. Thanks for your opinions.
