The Official Madonna Thread IV

Are you guys ready for some HARD CANDY?!

Only 22 more days! :D

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y17...candypromo.jpg

In the meantime, 4 Minutes is now on the TRL roster. Please vote, it only takes 2 seconds and you don't have to give them any personal info at all. (you can also vote as many times as you want :lech) The placement of 4 Minutes on this countdown is crucial to the success of the single.

Cyria 8th April 2008 07:14 AM

22 days - the wait is going to feel so long if the album only leaks a day before the official release. But, new Madonna!

Yes! I really hope that the album continues to leak in small bits like it has been so far. That way we can savor each piece of sweet candy up until the release! :) (plus it probably wouldn't affect her sales as much)

I've made the decision not to listen to small clips so I can enjoy the full HQ experience even if it means waiting until that day before or the actual release. Usually I listen to all available previews, but I think that with this album I don't want to be "spoiled" - 4 Minutes was such a pleasant surprise when I heard the full HQ, it would be great if I could repeat that experience with the rest. Now I just have to hope my resolve lasts through viewings of this thread and all the tempting Clip of Song X links. :)

Vinylfantasy 8th April 2008 08:03 AM

A preview clip of Peter Rauhofer's "Peter Saves Paris Mix" of 4 Minutes is now up on his myspace. Typical Petey, but still sounds great nonetheless. I like the other mix he debuted at Work better.

Alors, debout !

French radio NRJ has finally started the competion running on air and on the online website to win tickets for Madonna's private concert to take place on May 6 at l'Olympia.

After the teaser aired last week a new advertising is now broadcast on television. Madonna wakes up the hosts of morning show "6-9" saying:

- Bruno ?
- Camille ?
- Flo ?
- N'oubliez pas que je viens à Paris pour un concert privé ! (Don't forget I am coming to Paris for my private gig)
- Alors, debout ! (Come on, wake up!)

Vanity Fair for Charity

http://www.auctioncause.com/clientfi...-auction01.jpg

Vanityfair.com, on behalf of Madonna’s designated charity, Raising Malawi, has arranged to auction off the autographed globe from the singer’s May 2008 Vanity Fair cover shoot. The package also includes two tickets to a very special Madonna performance in New York City at the end of April, and much more.

The auction runs from April 8 until April 18, 2008.

A midcentury fashion-magazine cover inspired V.F. editor Graydon Carter to have Madonna pose with a globe, and the singer immediately embraced the idea. Michael Roberts, the magazine’s fashion and style director, then commissioned London-based set designer Robbie Doig to build the giant orb. Constructed of plaster and marble dust with a recyclable polystyrene core, it took 10 days to complete. With a four-foot diameter and weighing in at about 80 pounds, the globe was suspended from the ceiling of Los Angeles’s Smashbox Studios for the photo shoot, on February 21, 2008. Madonna maneuvered herself around the world’s circumference while photographer Steven Meisel captured the superstar from all angles. When the shoot came to an end, Madonna signed the globe—making a point to draw a heart over Africa.

The package includes

• the autographed globe from Madonna’s May 2008 Vanity Fair cover shoot
two tickets to a very special Madonna performance in New York City at the end of April;
accommodation for two nights at N.Y.C.’s Bowery Hotel;
dinner at Gemma—one of Manhattan’s hottest restaurants;
round-trip airfare for you and a guest (from select cities) to N.Y.C., provided by Virgin America

Sun reveals some more lyrics...

MADONNA’s new album Hard Candy is her most lyrically revealing collection ever – picking over the bones of relationships in meltdown.
Tracks frankly dissect the pain that comes when partnerships sour.
The 49-year-old has never been more confessional than on a string of tracks on the collection which is released on April 28.

Miles Away
“I’m alright
Don’t be sorry, it’s true
When I’m gone you’ll realise
I’m the best thing that ever happened to you.”

She’s Not Me
“She’s reading my books
Stealing my looks and wearing my lingerie
She’s got legs up to there and such beautiful hair
Devoted for life, your beautiful wife
She’s not me.”

Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You
“There’s something you should know
Angels that surround my heart
Are telling me to let you go
Over and over you’re pulling me back to the floor
I should just walk away. I keep on coming back for more”

Madge has worked with some of the biggest producers on the planet on this – her 11th studio album. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, TIMBALAND, KANYE WEST and PHARELL WILLIAMS all lend a hand on the impressively varied LP.

There’s thundering hip hop – Heartbeat, sumptuous disco – Dance 2night and grand balladeering – Voices.

Hard Candy: UK Album Playback

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5...aybacklsd0.jpg

Madonnalicious was fortunate enough to attend the UK playback for Hard Candy in East London earlier this evening with about 100 other members of the press.

Behind a non-descript door near Spitalfields market, UK press, TV and internet journalists gathered to listen to Madonna's new album. Once checked in at the door, all mobile phones were taken away and champagne handed out in return!

The playback took place in a large loft-type space, with many sofas and comfy chairs, cushions and LCD televisions, on every table there were candy canes and jelly beans - and large lollypops spelling out M-A-D-O-N-N-A H-A-R-D C-A-N-D-Y, many of the journalists snapped up these goodies.

Handouts of the album tracklist were handed out to everyone and then the playback started with the name of each track was displayed on the many LCD screens - and at the end the 4 Minutes video was also played.

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/9...aybacktjg8.jpg

As everyone left, they were handed a Hard Candy goodie bag which contained copies of Dazed and Confused, Elle, Q and Vanity Fair (May editions with the Madonna covers), a set of four Hard Candy collectors postcards, candy canes, a Hard Candy lollypop and some Madonna Hard Candies which would spell out her name and the album title if you dared open the packet!

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5...aybackpex9.jpg

And the album you ask? For those who were worried Madonna has ventured too far into RnB, fear not - although some songs contain the RnB beat, the way Madonna sings her lyrics over the top tends to make the songs recognizably 'Madonna'.
Far from being just an RnB album, madonnalicious felt a definite early 1980's club disco/electronic vibe to the album, and it felt like Madonna was going back to her beginnings (with a little RnB added on top!).

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/6...aybacksyc1.jpg

The second single Give It 2 Me will be an excellent club hit - in it's funky club/disco stomper way - it even contains a very similar bridge/break to Thief of Hearts.
For those fans who previously heard The Beat Goes On - prepare for a surprise - the song is so different madonnalicious even thought the wrong track was being played. Only the chorus (barely) survives, and there are new verses and a new rap by Kanye West.
Other standout tracks include 4 Minutes, Miles Away, She's Not Me, Incredible, Devil Wouldn't Recognise You and Voices.

Check this out gang! 4 Minutes is #1 on MTV.com's most viewed music videos! Jump is also at #10 which shocked the hell out of me. :laugh

Go M go!!! :shimmy

Don't forget to keep on voting for the TRL roster! We can't slump now!

kinomaniac 9th April 2008 02:07 AM

What the hell is Jump doing there? Anyways, I don't care what people say, I freaking love the video! When I'm at college all I wanna do is get home, turn my stereo on and dance like there's no tomorrow to 4 Minutes! Yes, (not so) guilty pleasure.

Calico 9th April 2008 03:07 AM

I love the video! So fun! I love it when she jumps on the peoples' table eating dinner and they're just like "...oh hey. we're dying."

She totally outdanced Justin though. XD

I put the scans in links because I didn't wanna stretch the page. I also lol'ed heartily at the Miley Cyrus comment. :laugh

The MIX 106.5 FULL interview with Madonna is now available for download.

jknza2664 9th April 2008 05:51 AM

the way you hear Madonna explain the concept behind the 4 Minutes video in the first minute or so of the MIX 106.5 interview makes you appreciate it more: it's an interesting theme, I kind of just wish it was made more explicit and maybe that the song's lyrics could have better reflected the idea behind it. Oh well, good stuff nonetheless.

Also, I don't know what to make of the reviews - they're all mostly positive but they share the same complaints about production, etc. of much of the last half of the album. Then again, Confessions got about the same critical reception and it was a great album soooo we'll see :)

bondingo 9th April 2008 07:32 AM

"'Hey You', the yawn-tsunami of global consciousness that Madonna wrote for Live Earth last July."

Haha :laugh Sorry, but I really have to agree with that one.

Good review. But I'd hardly call her a "leather-cop dominatrix". That title belongs to Namie. I'm still not sold on buying it though. I'll need to hear more than 4 Minutes (Excellent) and Candy Shop (Wretched) before I know if it deserves my purchase.

bondingo 9th April 2008 08:01 AM

Oh, and has anyone heard this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TnUmhl6wp4

That's not real, is it? It's way too rough to be an actual song, at least in my opinion.

Vinylfantasy 9th April 2008 08:23 AM

That's been floating around Youtube for awhile and it's completely fake. The vocals are just pre-existing ones that some fan spliced together. I'm glad it's fake but also sad at the same time because I kinda like the electro bang and kicking bass to it. :laugh At least until the words start.

That's what I was thinking might be the case. And I'm with you on the electro bang and the bass. But yeah, when the vocals come in it's a hot mess :laugh

In The Media: Madonna by Rowena True

The guys at Dazed magazine want to invite M-Tribe readers to watch a nice Madonna related video by artist Rowena True.

Back in 2006 Rowena True completed her RCA MA in animation since then she has worked on a number of animation commissions including Topshop, Grazia, The National Theatre, projects for London Fashion Week and most recently for Dazed Digital to coincide with April's Madonna issue of Dazed.

Rowena created a short animation inspired by Madonna's changing images throughout the years, in collaboration with costume designer Maki Loulou who created the mini Madonna themed costumes from the various different era's for the Barbie's in the film, such as , Madonna's 1983 hit song 'Borderline', her 1985 film debut 'Desperately Seeking Susan', the 1986 hit song 'Open Your Heart' and the seminal 'Vogue' era and sell out Blond Ambition World tour from 1990. Gina Brooke on makeup, Madonna and embracing our age

"Madonna is inspirational - and not just to me". The singer, who was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has an enviable energy level and drive, says Gina Brooke, Madonna's makeup artist and artistic director for Japanese beauty line Shu Uemura.

"She surrounds herself with people who are just as driven and hardworking," Brooke said last week before jetting off to London to join Madonna on a video shoot. "It keeps you on your toes."

Since teaming up with Madonna in 2005, Brooke says she has to be prepared. "(From) shadow to lashes, to diamonds, you never know what kind of request you'll get.

"When she requests something that I disagree with, what can I say? She's the queen of reinvention." In 2006, Brooke created a pair of mink and diamond eyelashes for Madonna's "Confessions on a Dancefloor" tour, setting off a lash trend that saw Shu Uemura selling a similar model for $10,000.

Wearing an outdated style of makeup will make you look older than you really are, she says. "If you embrace your age, people will be more happy with themselves." Bad lighting is a woman's worst enemy, Brooke says. Applying makeup in front of the bathroom mirror is akin to doing it in the dark. Women tend to over-apply cosmetics in bathroom light, and when they see themselves in natural light, they're shocked by how overdone they look. While she doesn't buy into cosmetic trends, Brooke says strong eyes and warm lips are popular right now.

She and Madonna went that route for the cover of Madonna's new CD "Hard Candy," set for an April 29 release. "She told me, `I want it to look really clean and bare and make it about the eyeliner,' " Brooke says.

The Hard Candy Songwriters

Here are the complete writing credits for Madonna's "Hard Candy". As you can see - and just as reported by Madonna Tribe a few weeks ago, 7 tracks off the new album come courtesy of Pharrell Williams (eight, including the Japanese and iTunes pre-order only bonus track "Ring My Bell"), and five are composed together with Timbaland aka Timothy Mosley and Justin Timberlake.

Other interesting tidbits include writing credits for Nate ''Danja'' Hills on three songs, for Hannon Lane on "Dance 2night" and "Voices", for Kanye West on "Beat Goes On" and a contribution you will certainly have no problem to recognize - the one of the very talented Joe Henry on "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You".

Malawi court date set for Madonna

Pop star Madonna is expected to appear in court in Malawi this month for a ruling on whether she can adopt a child from the southern African country.
The case is 'tentatively' scheduled for 22 to 25 April, a court clerk said.
Earlier this month the Malawian government recommended that the 49-year-old star should be allowed to adopt David Banda, who is aged two.
The boy has lived with Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie since October 2006 after they met him in an orphanage.
The adoption hearing was scheduled to take place in Malawi this week.
But the singer's lawyers asked for it to be delayed until the end of the month because she had another engagement in the US.

UK TOP FIVE SINGLES
1. Estelle, American Boy
2. Sam Sparro, Black and Gold
3. Flo Rida, Low
4. Madonna, 4 Minutes
5. Mariah Carey, Touch My Body

In the UK this week Madonna's "4 Minutes" rose 4 places to #4 on the singles chart. This is a new peak for the song. Its sales are still based on downloads alone. The physical "4 Minutes" singles are not released in the UK until April 21. "4 Minutes" is selling well in the UK iTunes store and is #1 there right now, but its download sales are currently not enough for it to be #1 in overall sales. Remixes of ''4 Minutes'' out TOMORROW

Remixes of ''4 Minutes'' are due out TOMORROW in the US and around the world, which means there will be 5 versions of this single posted on online music stores ready for download.

We invite you to download the remixes especially in US online retailers, such as iTunes, Amazon, Realmusic, etc.

It is VERY important to buy each remix SEPERATELY as a "buy song" and not to buy the remixes EP. Each song will count as 1 sale for Soundscan sales next week!!!! If you buy as an EP, they will NOT count separately.

Downloads within 3 times will be counted, therefore one person can contribute 15 points of download on ONE online music store and 45 points on the mentioned 3 major stores. In this case there will be huge chance for Madonna to top the US chart in the coming weeks.

Apparently the remix on the deluxe version of Hard Candy whose title has been kept secret is a remix of Give It 2 Me by Paul Oakenfold.

WHAT@!?#!@$?@!

MUST LISTEN!!!

edit: GIVE IT 2 ME IS SO SWEEEET

heartbeat and miles away sound kind of similar... similar beat, but different style songs. Good nonetheless.

the verse that comes in at the end of the She's Not Me preview reminds me of that song Supernatural on the B-Side of the Cherish single for some reason.

mmm Voices sounds promising too despite the fact that none of the reviews seem to spotlight it as one of the better tracks.

I can't say any of these songs sound bad :) And they near all sound positively Madonna. WILL NOT DISAPPOINT!

i needed those previews bad. they should hold me over. i was getting antsy.

Another great review - by Rolling Stone

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y17...adonna/1-1.png

Dominance isn't just a fetish for Madonna, it's her religion. It's no accident that she opened each show on 2005's Confessions on a Dance Floor tour by clenching a riding crop in her hand, jerking a gagged male dancer around by a leather leash. And she never puts down the whip: Since 1986's True Blue, Madonna has claimed writing or production credits on every one of her songs, even when she worked with dance-music artists such as William Orbit, Mirwais Ahmadzaï and Stuart Price. So it's surprising that her eleventh studio album — her final one for longtime label Warner Bros. — is an act of submission. For Hard Candy, Madonna's midlife meditation on her own relevance, she lets top-shelf producers make her their plaything.

A songwriting team of American chart royalty helps Madonna revisit her roots as an urban-disco queen. Madonna isn't even the star on the first single, "4 Minutes": Timbaland and Nate "Danja" Hills provide a clanging whopper of a beat, and her vocal bobs alongside Justin Timberlake's, fighting not to drown in the brassy funk of a marching band. Timberlake is the album's melody doctor, and he steals from his own broody "What Goes Around . . . Comes Around" on Madonna's "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You." Madonna co-wrote but didn't co-produce the Timberlake-Timbaland team's five songs, which smack more of their creators' stamps than her own. The songs are solid, but slightly anonymous, as though they could be stripped down and peddled to other singers.

The creative tension between Madonna and the Neptunes' Pharrell Williams crackles. Williams bangs on paint cans to generate the beat on the innuendo-laden opener, "Candy Shop", and pumps up the thumpy self-empowerment anthem "Give It 2 Me" with clubby synths that trumpet one of Madonna's favorite life-dance-sex metaphors: "Don't stop me now, don't need to catch my breath/I can go on and on." "Heartbeat" pulses like "Lucky Star," and the soulful "Beat Goes On" (which features an uninspired Kanye West cameo) is one of a handful of tracks with bells and whistles — the classic disco "toot-toot, beep-beep" — traceable to two of Madonna's touchstones: Chic, whose Nile Rodgers helped steer her early career, and Donna Summer.

Like Confessions, Hard Candy celebrates dance as salvation, but even the euphorically groovy "Heartbeat" and "Dance 2night" strike wistful notes. Although the uptempo set features no ballads, the dominant lyrical themes — regret, yearning, distrust — are far from upbeat. Morphing from a syncopated shuffle into a lathery, orgasmic hysteria, Pharrell's "Incredible" is a challenging song about longing for a relationship's idyllic beginning. There's a melancholy pining in Timbaland-Timberlake's lush "Miles Away," which implies that all is not peachy in the house of Richie. "You always have the biggest heart when we're 6,000 miles apart," Madonna sings. International pop megastars — they're just like us!

The album's weakest moment is its most emotionally vapid. Madonna dips into Español for the painfully literal "Spanish Lesson." She has said the music was inspired by a Baltimore dance called the Percolator but seems more indebted to Timberlake ís fast-strummed "Like I Love You." Fortunately, there's also the bass-popping retro-boogie "She's Not Me," where Madonna imagines her lovers feeling buyers' remorse for being seduced by a copycat who "doesn't have my name." The offender who's "reading my books and stealing my looks and lingerie" could be any young pop starlet. But it also seems like an oddly timed barb at Madonna's now-fallen successor, Britney Spears, who has teamed up with many of the guys on Hard Candy — Pharrell, Danja and (ahem) Timberlake — and Madonna herself.

Madonna can still scoff at wanna-be's half her age because she's stayed so flexible with her sound. (She's performed a similar feat with her body, devoting herself to a yoga regimen that's made her impossibly elastic — name another near-fifty-year-old who can still rock a hot crotch shot on her album cover.) Even when she wrestles with Pharrell's abrupt stylistic changes or lets herself get absorbed in a Timberlake melody, Madonna still finds her way back on top. The atmospheric closing track, "Voices," poses the question "Who is the master, who is the slave?" before its operatic wind-down ends in a dramatic bell toll. The answer to both questions is still Madonna.

I listened to this earlier today and all I have to say is EPIC FAIL. Every song sounds exactly alike, the only one I like is "Miles Away." After the genius of COAD I am really really disappointed. :thud

jknza2664 16th April 2008 07:15 AM

I wouldn't say it's an epic fail, or a fail at all

Although I agree all the songs sound kind of similar, I'd definitely say the same thing about COAD, and not even just based off the previews haha But Timbaland does have a penchant for making everything he produces sound EXACTLY the same and using the SAME beats. I really don't like him. But I think that even though there's a lot of sameness, that doesn't detract from the songs' overall quality. And who knows, maybe the full versions will allow the songs to differentiate themselves better. Let's keep in mind these are 30 sec. previews of 11 unheard songs, alot of which are like really really long for pop songs.

Just like COAD was a big blob of songs that blended into eachother, it was an effing good blob that I listen to alot. Worse comes to worse, the sameness will make it tiresome to listen to the album the whole way through, but the individual songs all sound amazing to me.

Vinylfantasy 16th April 2008 07:22 AM

It's called being cohesive. :laugh

kotora 16th April 2008 08:19 AM

COAD felt very cohesive, like 56 minutes of being in an amazing Europop club. That's how I looked at it. It all flowed together and really took me someplace. This album all sounds the same, but in a very bad way, IMO. The majority of it feels like such a step backward. Unless hearing the full versions somehow makes me change my mind, Hard Candy is definitely my least of the diva albums of 2008. MC and Janet's albums were much better IMO.

Madonna "Hard Candy" Live Soup Interview

That was a really good interview. She seemed very personable in it and it was interesting to hear her answers to the questions. It's funny though, because when she was asked the question about who the biggest diva was, we all know she was thinking it was Timbaland.

I haven't heard anything that can come close to "Feedback," "Luv," "Rollercoaster," or "Rock With U" on Hard Candy. Janet will obviously sell the worst of the three but I still think her album has way more standout tracks. I have to say that the clips from Hard Candy are growing on me, though.

My friends are all obsessed with the song too. I like it, but I'm not as obsessed as they are - go figure.

KaoriNeko 17th April 2008 01:08 AM

Anything Timbaland does, a lot of us teens love apparently. I'm in it for my Madonna. <3

truehappiness 17th April 2008 02:07 AM

tbqh, whenever I hear the song, I barely hear Madonna singing. XDDD

voltron 17th April 2008 02:48 AM

^ it's kinda because it's true.

Justin sings much more in the song, and he's backing Madonna's vocals almost 90% of the time.

Zeke. 17th April 2008 03:03 AM

I'm kinda dissapointed in the song, and with Madonna. Usually she invents the wheel, not goes along with it when it's been in for the past 2 years already. I heard the previews for the new album and ONE songs caught my attention - Miles Away. I wouldn't call myself a fan of Madonna's, but Confessions was a masterpiece and this new image and album is far from it.

Vinylfantasy 17th April 2008 03:21 AM

I don't know why so many people were expecting Confessions part 2. It's pretty evident that Madonna never does the same thing twice, she's no Mariah Carey.

haha OH SNAP.

I don't know what to think of the album so far, but i do like what i'm hearing from the previews. i'll just have to find out when i buy my copy : D and i agree, Confessions was great, and it might be nice if she did something that was like it but at the same time she's already done it. if music is about progress and development and growth, then i think this album is just another point on that journey for madonna.

Vinylfantasy 17th April 2008 07:46 AM

:laugh

Sorry if that came off too harsh, my intention wasn't to start another age-old Mariah vs. Madonna argument. I was just referring to how she said her new album was basically Emancipation part 2.

Give it 2 Me has leaked! And I think the whole album's out there somewhere, but honestly I don't think it'd be good for me to find it haha

The song gets really good at the end, I dunno how I feel about the bridge though, it's kind of non-sequitor. Overall, strong and original song - could maybe use a little more bass or something but the remixes will take care of that :)

Kobayashiwoof 20th April 2008 09:42 AM

I heard the album leaked on the 17th.
