I find it hard to believe she's sold that much in Asia, but there are no official charts that give definitive numbers so it's impossible to prove either way.

Those numbers are shipped copies (which avex got money for them so they counted them I guess) though the range of real sales are always in the 100,000-300,000 minus range of the shipped numbers.

There are some other numbers here that say that TW... got 720,000..

The Japanese corporate world is pretty blatantly corrupt though. It wouldn't be past them to inflate things like this, which only they can verify.

true, they're corrupt in a way that they do have a lot of favoritism & unfair deals with other companies.

but inflating the finanvial summary makes no sense. the owners are expecting the yearly end result to be in line with the financial reports, and if it does not live up to what you could expect from these it would be just disastrous for the company. and a fraud of somesort too.

also it's a fact that Oricon does not cover all the sales. the actual sales are probably 10-20% higher for each artist than the number given by Oricon. but Oricon is a good indicator for the success and the most reputable chart in Japan nonetheless :yes

It's not impossible - someone's got to do it, and Ayumi is the prime candidate. Sales aren't what they used to be, but why can't she sell that much in Asia? Seems perfectly likely to me.

It's no secret that ayu is the most popular japanese artist (or female artist) in asia as well.
The best selling Japanese female and solo artist in overall sales officially by oricon too.

These are shipped items, "sold" to the vendors/distributors. Not all sold to customers.

even though the stated figures is just a rumor...i do believe that Ayu is doing really well in Asia. I mean, it is possible that her singles and albums sell more or double in Asia compared to other artistes (exclude Utada-she's doin well in Asia too) She doesn't have to worry coz she has quite strong Asians fans to support her. Ganbatte Ayu;)

Um isn't it a bad thing if a album was a huge amount of copies shipped but the actual amount sold doesn't even come close?

I'd say it's a little disappointing, but then haven't music sales been down / different in Japan for a while now? A few things need to be factored in - file-sharing online / leaks, competing artists that grab the attention of others... Still, considering the relatively low numbers of record sales here in the US I'd say that Ayu's numbers are still pretty good considering all those factors.
