Ayu goes global with "Dragonball" movie
Ayumi Hamasaki has been chosen to provide the theme song for the Hollywood-produced live-action "Dragonball" movie. All releases of the film worldwide will use her new rock tune "Rule," sung in Japanese. Director James Wong, said to be a big fan of Hamasaki, extended her the offer.

It is rare for a song by a Japanese artist to be used in all international releases of a movie. And for Hamasaki, this will also be her first time doing a song for a foreign film.

The movie is being released under the title "Dragonball Evolution" in Japan on March 13, ahead of the U.S. release in April. The film is expected to be shown in more than 60 countries around the world.

Raleigh 9th December 2008 08:41 PM

That is totally unexpected and awesome. Finally avex marketing is doing something.

Coelacanth 9th December 2008 08:42 PM

Sanspo seems to be down at the moment. My god, this is probably gonna be a hot song!

Sundae 9th December 2008 08:43 PM

Not that horrible Dragonball that Hollywood is working on right? I don't want Ayu's name associated with that.

As long as it's not that then all right!!! Looking forward to it.

micster 9th December 2008 08:43 PM

Eww Dragonball movie. Anyway Sanspo is down it seems so here is a copy paste of the article from 2ch.

A google says that Dragonball Evolution is indeed the American film. So this is why the song was going to America...

stickyrice 9th December 2008 08:44 PM

I'm really looking forward to this! Cant wait!!

njanjayrp 9th December 2008 08:44 PM

OMG! Well this should be a "strong" tie-in! I am so excited cuz its a new (rock) song!

GRACE 9th December 2008 08:47 PM

Not really liking the fact that it's a dragon ball tie in of all things, but, a new Ayu song is always good~ It better not be a digisingle

Ayumiko 9th December 2008 08:47 PM

eww.....that American dragon ball movie?? :dead2...oh well....can't wait for the new song~

ShiroMai 9th December 2008 08:47 PM

So maybe that's that 'kakkoi' song she was writing about on her blog? <3

LNany 9th December 2008 08:48 PM

I edited the first post with a screencap, for those of you that can get Sanspo to work.

Tom Punks 9th December 2008 08:52 PM

Apparently that movie is being released on April 8, 2009? :O:O:O That's Ayu's 11th anniversary.

Zemus 9th December 2008 08:53 PM

That's cool. :) But I don't like the fact that they are making a "real" movie out of DB. It should stay as anime / manga.

Coelacanth 9th December 2008 08:54 PM

The song is gonna be used in all of the countries its being released in. I guess I'm gonna have to see this whack-ass movie to hear her song on the big screen. :laugh

CHAS_AYU 9th December 2008 08:55 PM

Wow! Can't wait to listen to it.
I think that is the song Ayu mentioned in TA Messages.
It must be a super ROCK song!!

Is Ayu going to the America for the PV?
There is a higher chance for us to have a new album.

Kikaru 9th December 2008 08:56 PM

Okay, first James Marsters is in the movie, then Ayu's song??? DAMMIT MOVIE YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE ME SEE IT X_X

It's cool for her

U-GO-BOY 9th December 2008 09:01 PM

oms I soooo hope the song will be not only in the Japanese movie ~~"
An English version would be cool too^^

Melrose 9th December 2008 09:02 PM

So if the song is going to be international, will Jade sing the English version or what? I hope Ayu will sing the English version LOL.

This is so amazing! yaaaaaaa =D

What does it say in the message? I see a release date or something?

I guess this is the news we were going to get the 10th!

From what I get from the article, the director specifically wanted a Japanese song to be used for the film. Doesn't seem like there's gonna be an English version, etc.

micster 9th December 2008 09:06 PM

Just use the excite translator to translate the article, its not that engrished.

The producers decided they wanted to use a Japanese song so its gonna be in Japanese only. Ayu is noted to be said it was one of her favourite cartoons and she is honoured to be doing the song.

I cant wait for the next TA translation

Melrose 9th December 2008 09:07 PM

!!!

Ayu singing a song for every international version then? Awesssommeee. :O

This is SO big for Ayu! I'm so happy for her ^___^ Finally a big spin-off (how do you say it?) featuring Ayu! =D

I just realized something...two TA entries ago she said that one of her songs is going to LA...so I'm guessing this is the song?

Teppei-chan 9th December 2008 09:11 PM

I´m happy to hear that Ayu will sing a song for a movie but the real movie from Dragonball?:no
I hope that the song will be awesome

DRAGON BALL REVOLUTION is a new season of the anime, or it's the movie which's coming with Spife from Buffy xD ? I think that's a really great news, and I'm sure Ayu was talkin' about that in her last messages... She said she couldn't talk about that song during... 10 days ? XD

James Marsters??? Spike from Buffy/Angel?! Thas awesome, he was my most favorite actor from the two series.

This isn't really the anime debut I pictured from Ayu, but its good U.S. advertisement. A slow wiggle into America, not like the "hey I'm going to make an English album" crap that others are trying.

I have very mixed feelings right now.

1) It's Ayu's song! In a Hollywood movie! :yes
2) It's a really bad looking movie. I mean, Piccolo isn't even green! :no

Why is everyone so disappointed with Dragonball being the movie she sings?

The movie is HIGHLY anticipated, after years and years of the Dragonball craze. And the audience of the movie is the most anime and thus Japanese-loving orientated of all movies. So this movie is absolutely perfect for spreading her music overseas. :)

Zeke. 9th December 2008 09:29 PM

This must be what Ayu was talking about when she said she was sending a song overseas to America. Can't wait for this. I work at a movie theater and I doubt we will get this but I'm gonna be talking about it non-stop. Lol.

glowlydays 9th December 2008 09:29 PM

i... don't know what to say...

Raleigh 9th December 2008 09:30 PM

^ I'm just glad that her team is actually doing something and isn't assigning the same old boring tie-ins with Panasonic or Musico/Music.jp whatever.

polka-dot-jewel 9th December 2008 09:30 PM

No wonder her head is filled with English. I bet a lot of this song, or maybe all of it, is in English. There's no way they'd release this song in America if it were in Japanese - FOX would not do that.

But... wow. I'm truly shocked. I, for one, am not too excited for this film, but... if it brings Ayu to America... I'll probably end up seeing the film just to hear the song being played in the film. XD

edit: Nevermind, it seems like the song will be in Japanese... that's interesting, because the song will be used with the American release... hmm...

rakeru 9th December 2008 09:31 PM

so....... new song? i wonder if it'll be a single/on an album.

truehappiness 9th December 2008 09:33 PM

This looks like it possibly reveals her "secret" of how she sent the song to America.. perhaps this is why? And perhaps Rule is a CREA-aided composition?

Oh, and a strange coincidence; DBE is coming out in America on Ayu's 11th anniversary. April 8th! LOL.

Bishoujo Ayumi 9th December 2008 09:38 PM

I think I'd be happier if it wasn't being used for the movie. I have nothing against Dragonball (I actually kind of like the series) but I wish Ayu would lend her music to something a little less ... lame?

That's just my opinion, but eh. AT LEAST it's a new rockish song, so that's good news.

Somehow I have a feeling it will be more commercial-styled rock. Like Startin' or evolution.

A snippet from the sabi was in a yomiuri article.

Quote:

誰かに決められたルール そんなもん必要ない だってこの僕らがルール そこんとこ譲れない
Something about rules decided by someone else.. etc etc..

It's interesting to note that the director likes Coldplay.. I wonder if Ayu's song will end up like that? Also; the trailer is reported to be out in on 12/18.. hopefully with the theme song!

This is such an embarrassing tie-in LOL. The movie looks absolutely atrocious :puke Why can't Ayu ever get good tie-ins?

well hopefully the song is at least good...:o

GRACE 9th December 2008 09:48 PM

^Except that the movie is hyped, so the song will be heard by masses. The tie-in itself doesn't matter as long as the song is heard and enjoyed. At least she's actually doing something that people actually hear this time around

The movie has been getting horrible feedback. The fans do not like that this is just another Asian franchise getting the Hollywood treatment to make more money. A lot of people think that this is just another american version of an asian theme that is gonna suck. I don't think I need to name the other asian turned American version that didn't do well. And now Ayumi's name is attached to this one. I hope for Ayumi's sake it is good. There are a lot of things that don't match up with the original Dragonball that we know and it's not looking good right now.

lfe. 9th December 2008 09:51 PM

Yeah this movie can't be that good, it will either be not bad/above average or worse than Dead or Alive :Roflmao :roflmao :roflmao

Catzi 9th December 2008 09:52 PM

Even if this movie is really popular, it'd be hard for Ayu to become popular in the U.S. Another example, Kingdom Hearts and Hikki.

Bishoujo Ayumi 9th December 2008 09:52 PM

Also, lol, suddenly I'm reminded of that Final Fantasy movie with the L'arc~en~Ciel tie-in.

Melrose 9th December 2008 09:54 PM

I think what avex wants to do is have a small fanbase in USA so maybe she can tour or something. Doubt they want her to become huge in the U.S. since she's quite established in Japan and her English skills aren't so polished.

o hai 2 totally unrelated subjectz

I think that the tie-in will only help.. as in Japan people'd buy the release if they liked the song.. that is if a lot of people watch it in Japan. Did a lot of people watch any American adaptations like crazy in Japan? Or have they had a history of flopping?

xLitax 9th December 2008 10:06 PM

Hopefully the song is good.

elepop 9th December 2008 10:08 PM

I feel that it's a bit weird that the actors are a mixture of Asian actors and American actors. Anyway. I'm not really a fan of Dragon Ball since I only read 2 mangas but it feels... wrong? I don't really think that DB's fanbase is going to be happy about this... I wonder what Shokotan thinks!

But I'm not disappointed for Ayu. As long as the song is good, I'm fine!

I think Speed Racer did well in Japan, but I'm not sure about horror remakes doing well in Japan... But, anime's really popular in Japan, and since Dragonball is an anime and is still fairly popular over there, I think the movie will do well in Japan.

jon_the_d 9th December 2008 10:10 PM

hehe,

my movie guess was right! :P

didn;t consider which movie though, I reckon I could have guessed this too if I'd paid more attention to movie news...

movie is looking ptentially poor, but it's still great news for ayu...and us!!!

new song!!!

njanjayrp 9th December 2008 10:11 PM

Like truehappiness said ^^ This can't really reflect on Ayu's career negatively, many others sang theme songs for bigger flops than this movie could turn out to be. I am pretty sure that average people who aren't DB fans will prolly watch the movie, liked it or not, they'll hear the song and the movie will be promoted world wide. I doubt that AVEX wants to make her popular in the US in any way, and I hope they'll release the single with another track in April so hopeful Ayu will benefit from the movie promotion at least a bit.

minkAYuko 9th December 2008 10:12 PM

And this i way tie-ins are not always the answer, all of you who beg for a tie-in, there, now you have one!! don't complain that is for this movie.

anyway, I'm excited about the song.

omg what's wrong with people.

Do you guys know that just about everyone is going to see this movie? I mean come on, even the people who hate the fact that they're doing it are going to see it just to say they did, even if theyre going to bash it later.

I don't care if the movie is horse ****. People all over the world are going to hear this song and think about Ayu, even if they don't know who she is.

I'm waiting to see how good the song is first, before I start feeling bad that she has a tie-in.

And I mean, Ayu is a total nobody in the states. Hollywood would never ever give her a better tie in, I'm sorry.

-_-

If the point is to increase her fanbase or spread her name than yeah Dragonball Evolution is her best bet. Other movies would just tell her to sing in english or they would just get someone else to do it. It's not like since the movie is gonna be bad, the song is gonna suck either. I will probably like the song but I would how many people in the US are gonna watch this movie. Sometimes if a lot of people say a movie is gonna suck before the movie has even been released it usually means lower ticket sales. Which means not that many people are gonna listen to this song. If it was regular times I would think that people would go see it just to check it out, but now people are saving money and are checking what they are spending their money on. Would people spend money on a movie that others say is bad? Not likely.

It also makes me wonder if they are aware of how many people across the world like Ayumi and are trying to cash in on that. Before this I was not gonna watch it, but now it's like because there's an Ayumi song in it, I have to support it and go watch. I'm a fan of Ayumi and I want her to do well across the world so I should go watch it. I'm actually considering spending 7 bucks just to hear a 2 minute clip of her song. :headache

From what I get from the article, the director specifically wanted a Japanese song to be used for the film. Doesn't seem like there's gonna be an English version, etc.

Is Ayu's song going to be just for the Japanese release of the movie or it's actually going to be featured in the American release also?

Since the movie is hollywood, the director asked for a japanese song and ayu wrote in her blog she sent the new rock song to america, it means that it will be hers in all of the countries it will be out (the article also says it).

I'm gonna post an auto-translation of the Sanspo article to clear some things up:

Sweetfish "DragonBall" whole world theme song On the 9th, I found out that a singer and Ayumi Hamazaki (30) sing the whole world theme song of the movie which taking a picture-ized a popular cartoon "DragonBall" at Hollywood "DRAGONBA LL EVOLUTION". Opening to the public in more than 60 worlds decides about a movie, and sweetfish goes out on the world advance in earnest.

"DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION" the masterpiece (James and a won director) are a taking a picture edition of a masterpiece of the cartoonist who made sales of 350,000,000 copies in the world and Mr. Akira Toriyama "DragonBall", and which are the general production costs of more than 10,000,000,000 yen.

Opening to the public in more than 60 worlds decides on the beginning as Japanese opening to the public on March 13th of next year already, and music of sweetfish will color a screen in all countries.

A trigger is won supervision and a hot message of love from a fox in the 20th century of distribution origin. On the making side, "I want Japanese to sing a theme song of the big-grossing cartoon born in Japan.", when it's narrowed down to a Japanese singer, and he's searching will for it, the won director who listened to music of sweetfish is moved and requests with "strong work of the message remembered for a long time deeply (music)". Sweetfish consented to this.

A theme song "Rule" (It'll be sold next year.) is the rock number of the Japanese word. A won director "prefers cool Japanese" though he's the whole world linkup, sweetfish writes the words in Japanese by request. I read a script, imagined a positive main character and finished writing.

The sweetfish which turns the view to foreign countries and has expanded a place by the achievement steadily such as making the first Asia tour succeed last year. 1 of the cartoons which liked singing a theme song of hollywood movie from the past by the first time ", honor. It's expected that the DragonBall world is loved by all the countries,", and, I'm speaking.

EWWWW I hate dragon ball!

...buuuut whatever, I am excited about this! yay for international tie-in! =D

and major YAY for a new song! "Rule" is such a great title! I was kinda wishing ayu would take a little break from rock but the title totally upped my interest in the song! whee!

BTW, @ Coelacanth, I love the way that auto-translator calls ayu "sweetfish" XD

anyway. yaaaaaaaaay!

MissElin_ 9th December 2008 10:37 PM

SWEEEEET! Another rock song!!! Cant waaaaaiiiit! :D :D :D

thangkhung91 9th December 2008 10:39 PM

Haha I can't stop laughing at the fact that they chose an american actor for the role as Goku! XD It looks ridiculous!

Anyhow, I glad that she finally has a big tie-in. But I have a bit mixed feeling about this too. When/if poeple in other countries hear the song they're either gonna think wow/good song or who is this?!/this sounds wierd. Am I over analyzing? :P

Anyway, I dying to hear the song! :D

I hurried this, but here's a complete translation of the article by me. I think I got all the main points down, so if Coelacanth's auto-translation is too hard to read, here's mine:

Ayu's "Dragonball" Worldwide Theme Song

It has been revealed on the 9th that singer Hamasaki Ayumi (30) is singing the worldwide theme song for "Dragonball Evolution", the Hollywood film based on the popular "Dragonball" manga. The film is set to be released in not less than 60 countries worldwide, making this a full-blown global venture for Ayu.

"Dragonball Evolution" (Directed by James Wong) is the live-action version of multi-million selling manga-ka Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, "Dragonball", a spectacle with production costs of over US$100,000,000.

It has been decided that Ayu's music will paint the screen in every country, for both the release in Japan on March 13th of next year and the later release in 60 countries worldwide.

The start of it was a call from director James Wong, expressing his and distribution company 20th Century Fox's wishes that "The theme song for a hit manga born in Japan should be sung by a Japanese person."

The theme song, "Rule" (to be released next year) is a rock number sung in Japanese despite being a world-wide tie-up. At director Wong's request for "Cool Japanese", Ayu wrote the Japanese lyrics, about her impression of the film's protagonist, after reading the screenplay.

Last year, after her first Asia Tour was a success overseas, Ayu expanded her steady activity to accomodate an overseas outlook. On singing a Hollywood movie theme song for the first time, she says, "This is a manga I used to love, so I'm very honored. I hope for countries all over the world to love the world of Dragonball."
