Does looks matter?.

Does it matter for an artist you like to be pretty or not?.

For me, I don't mind about looks. If the artist sounds pretty enough, I kind of see her as being pretty and atractive anyway. Ofcourse there are some artists who I like because they looks really pretty or have a certain style that I think is pretty.

What do you guys think?.

KarenPang 10th January 2009 01:58 PM

even though I support quite a lot of Johnny's bands , I still say no on my part because on the other end of the spectrum , I also support artistes that practically failed in the looks department eg. Kobukuro , abingdon boys school but yet they're able to produce great music .

For me I place a much greater emphasis on music rather than an artiste's looks & this might shock you but before supporting any Johnny's bands , I had no freaking idea as to how so & so looks like in each band & not to mention who's who til the music barrier is torn down

music is always more important than looks to me . Looks can fade in time to come but music will always be something that stays on after an artiste pass on

Teppei-chan 10th January 2009 03:12 PM

No.
I have some favourite singer from wich I think that they donīt look good. When they make good music I don't care about the looking from someone.

sweetgirl 10th January 2009 04:11 PM

not to me. My fav. bands range from average looking to ugly.

ImpactBreaker 10th January 2009 04:16 PM

Generally, I'd say no, though it's also undeniable that looks can have an extra effect on how you admire the artists and their songs.

micster 10th January 2009 04:47 PM

It does quite a bit but then again there are very few ugly artists

elepop 10th January 2009 05:15 PM

I don't care about looks. As long as the artist has a nice voice and that the music is great, it's all that matter.

Example, REMIOROMEN are ugly. Especially the singer. But it doesn't stop me from listening to their music because it's fantastic. And also, Leah Dizon is super gorgeous. But to me, it doesn't matter if she's beautiful or not. Her music is crap and her talent is like, non-existant. So of course, I don't listen to her music.

But micster is right, there are very few ugly artists.

CoriKaru 10th January 2009 10:56 PM

Do looks matter in the music industry and to fans? YES.

More than half of artist discussions are about how they look and all it takes is for one person to say someone doesn't look good or bring up plastic surgery to start ARMAGEDDON in a thread.

Not to mention that it's no coincidence that a lot of musicians are attractive. Businesses want to sign what sells and Beauty and Attractiveness and Sex Appeal sells. Very well.

I'm not even going to speak on the Boy Band Domination.

So do looks matter? Heck Yes.

Corybobory 10th January 2009 11:12 PM

I think he was talking about if looks matter to you personally or not.

Hm... I guess it's a bonus if the artist is good looking. Humans are attracted to beautiful people and I am no exception. But I've listened to some artists who are butt ugly as well, so there it's not a rule... Oasis, The Verve... *shudder*

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 11th January 2009 12:00 AM

^ Aww, No more pic of you eating noodles.

It's a bonus if the artist / band is good looking. I love Bleach (band from Okinawa) but I'll admit the 3 girl really aren't all that attractive. Same thing for ORANGE RANGE, everybody except TAKUYA in UVERworld, mACKAz, SASSY and Kazuto from HaiKara, and Rie fu aren't all that good looking but the people mentioned sure can play/rap/sing well and make damn good music for the most part.
Ayu's, Namie's, Nana's, and Leah's good looks are basically eye candy. Something to add on to the things I like about them.

I Agree with this.

In most cases I always heard the song(s) before seeing the artist or PVs, as was the case with ayu. However, general charisma including looks may enhance the listening experience quite a lot when you're continuously following an artist and its works.

Also, there are few rather unfortunate looking artists, allthough not all of them appeal to me personally.

Calico 11th January 2009 12:03 AM

Personally, no, they don't, but I would be lying if I didn't say if some super hot artist didn't make me go "oooh who's that?" and then check them out. I've discovered lots of artists I love that way, especially if they play up something I like.

tanachu 11th January 2009 12:22 AM

To me: Not really, since afterall, it's the MUSIC that matters most, and if you're someone who only listens to mainstream artists who use their looks to sell- kill yourself plz.

I even take a long time to check out the artists (like boybands) everyone goes **** over just because it's mostly over their looks. That or I just avoid the artists in question all together.

Beauty4123 11th January 2009 05:09 AM

ONLY FOR JOHNNY'S DO I CARE 90% ON LOOKS :laugh no seriously, i may seem shallow, but it's boys. :lech they need to look hot, haha.

but for general artists, if i like the song, it dosen't matter how they look. :P

pommy48 11th January 2009 05:12 AM

I don't really care as much if I only like them as an artist

But if i want to look up to them as an idol, then looks do count~

It's brownie points for me if the artist is pretty/handsome

But at the end of the day, it's the talent that counts

ll moments ll 11th January 2009 05:41 AM

i don't think i depend too much on looks, to be honest. if i like the music, then i can careless about how they look. :yes

to me, if they look good physically, then it only enhances it. i mean, i got into KAT-TUN because i genuinely like their music. when buying their music, i tend to get the version with the most music/bonus tracks. it's just a plus that K-T looks attractive, IMO.

but Johnny's/Idols are a different spectrum from those that just release music too. i mean, i won't lie, they are made to look pretty and attract girls. and they do numerous activities outside music as well.

i don't think anyone in Mr.Children is attractive, but heck, they make amazing music! :) and i don't even know how GReeeeN looks like, LOL!

emi♡ 11th January 2009 10:00 AM

no.

I absolutely love eiko shimamiya...and she's not exactly gorgeous.

however, I do think some artists like namie and boa and kuu should be in shape so they can continue their dancing styles and stuff. Make up always takes care of the rest lol

*Petit* 11th January 2009 10:19 AM

I must though, that the first image I ever saw of ayumi was as a part of a collage with other japanese artists like namie, masami and shimatani, and ayumi really stood out. Her eyes were so big and make her look super cute, almost unreal.

Raiu-Ayu 11th January 2009 11:23 AM

For me looks don't matter. They just need to sound good :P

But looks may catch my attention. For example, I used to avoid Johnny's boys like the plague but one then I saw Yamapi in Kurosaki and was like "DAMN!!" so I decided to check his music out then our started liking NEWS and a few other Johnny's bands.

So basically for singers looks don't matter to me but they might get me interested :P

PoetGirl 11th January 2009 11:31 AM

ummm im crazy about music so i dont look how the artist look. if i feel the music i dont care if artist is pretty or ugly. its not like he or she is a model lol.
but i think that most people care about artist's look.

AyUta 12th January 2009 08:38 AM

Nope, looks don't matter at all to me. Although I wont lie, when I see a pretty and attractive artist, it makes me want to check them out(music wise :laugh):yes

Kobayashiwoof 12th January 2009 03:17 PM

Not totally, however, if I saw an artist that was very attractive or insanely fugly i'd check them out. If they were average i'd probably give them a miss. This is just if I saw some random pictures.

But If I like the song it doesn't matter about looks, since I would be LISTENING to them not looking at them while I'm listening.

Rock Steady 12th January 2009 04:22 PM

JOHNNY'S MATTER. That may sound very low, but their looks need to make up for some of them who can't sing. (ex: Nishikido Ryo. That boy is fine, but he can't sing AT ALL.)

Other than that, I don't care.
Take KOTOKO for example, not too many people are fond of her looks, but I personally think she's hot and has such an amazing voice.

And someone on here said the lead singer of Remioromen is ugly.
I don't think he's ugly at all, I find him to be very attractive, actually.

happiholic★ 13th January 2009 12:48 AM

Yes, they do. All my favorite singers are "pretty", and I tend not to give the less "beautiful" artists too much attention.

Kikaru 13th January 2009 12:59 AM

I think they matter in how they draw you in. I admit, I'm more likely (if just walking on the street or something and see posters of artist's upcoming albums) to pick artists who are good-looking than non-goodlooking.

That said, nowadays I tend to check out music first, because advertising is not as traditional as they used to be, and they have less affect nowadays for me personally.

However, I admit to being shallow when it comes to JE boybands, although I think some of them are actually pretty decent actors. And DBSK, although it was actually their song that drew me in...

Although in all honesty, no one in the music industry (and by music industry I mean pop and mainstream industry) is really ugly. I think some are plainer looking than others and some does not live to the beauty hype, but in terms of measuring against the standard of beauty no one truly lacks that.

Best Post Ever.

bondingo 13th January 2009 05:48 AM

Yes, they most certainly do. In pop music, an artists' image is a large part oft heir appeal and I can't deny the effect it has on me. I usually hate male artists but I definitely don't mind listening to Chris Brown and David Archuleta. Are the looks a factor? I would say so.

O RLY?

So even if they have an absolutely stunning and beautiful voice, but they don't live up to your standard of "pretty", you won't listen to them?
And if a singer you like is very pretty, but they can't sing worth a crap, will you still listen to them even though they're pretty?

Just wondering.

Aisha_Angel 13th January 2009 09:45 PM

I'm like half-and-half, I can totally compromise if the music is great like Tony An's solo work. his material is very good, but he's not exactly that good looking to me.

Then there's AXS (access)...Hiro is sexy as all, but Daisuke needs to go sit in a corner somewhere and retire. Looking at their videos is hard for me to do because Daisuke (even though he's a legend...) is just HARD to look at.

But he's a moderately popular musician on his own now...Groups like TVXQ, I have to question myself by saying...If the five of them, or rather now-a-days, the three of them weren't good looking to me, would I still have considered making [Hug] my number one song in 2004?

When I listen to the song now, all I can think about is how HAWT Hero was back then with his bouquet of roses...and how adorable MAX was with the little kitten...But that's all the visual stuff. The song on it's own, just wasn't strong at all---It's was (for me) their looks that made me give them a second chance.

In fact, it wasn't even until their second album that I started to appreciate their vocal talents over their looks...So do looks matter?

Sadly, for me yeah sorta...Cuz, I mean I just don't care to much for artist's that look BLEH...

Hazuki 13th January 2009 10:55 PM

It's kind of a Extra ++ to me :)
A perfect situation I can remember is DBSK. 'Cause I really liked their music since their
first song "Hug", but I never knew what they looked like, I only got their music from the internet.
I didn't have any of their CD to see their faces, but I still liked their songs.
I only started to pay attention to their looks when I got their CD a few years ago.

Even the band GReeeeN, no one knows their faces, but I LOVE them! :heart

I guess if the artist has something in their look that's "special" or "attractive"
and I see their video/picture somewhere, yeah, I'm gonna go check on them.

yup they're a prime eg. in that you don't need to know how the heck they look like to appericate the type of great music they make

xLuna&1LOVE 19th January 2009 10:12 AM

Well, it's okay to have pretty posters in your room...
But okay: No, I don't really care.

SelfishHands 19th January 2009 02:12 PM

looks are everything to me as shallow as that sounds :)
if i think someone looks fierce it makes me interested and gets me into their music
i mean i have ugly singers on my ipod but i dont listen to them as much

[ Melinda ] 19th January 2009 04:32 PM

Basically no. If an artist is ugly but has great music, I can still listen to them and enjoy their music. But I probably wouldn't buy a dvd or something, haha :D

Of course the more attractive ones get more of my attention, because I watch their videos, concerts etc., and maybe even buy goods and such. I listen to many JE artists, but I don't like them just for their looks, of course not. I wouldn't listen to someone just because he or she is pretty, the music has to be good.

jbrat2219 19th January 2009 06:04 PM

When I was a child, yes very much so. But now that I'm older, I know what is most important :yes.

Hachimitsu 19th January 2009 08:35 PM

Well, sometimes you hear a song on the radio, and you really love it without knowing who's singing it. So I think you can love music without taking looks into consideration. But sometimes you see a video of an attractive artist, and you like it, without paying too much attention to the music.
This issue has two sides, right?

brand new love 19th January 2009 09:02 PM

yes and no. i don't care what anyone that i'm listening to looks like, because i'm not going to be staring at them, i'm listening to their music. i have to say that i'm in the same boat as karenpang, i actually like some johnny's groups for the music (and every other boyband i listen to, for that matter). i like two groups and i don't even find them very attractive.. maybe 2 or 3 of them, but that's about it. i had quite a few KAT-TUN songs before i knew what they looked like lol.

however, i'm more likely to support someone i find attractive. most of the albums, singles, photobooks, ect. that i own are pretty korean boybands.. and koda kumi. i'll buy albums of my favorites who need the sales regardless of what they look like, i'm not that shallow, but most things i buy because i think the cover is pretty, the booklet is pretty.. and i don't even need to explain photobooks, i'm sure.

Raleigh 19th January 2009 09:11 PM

In an ideal world looks wouldn't matter and talent would be the only requirement. However it would be fake to say that they do not. I always had the feeling that the entire J-Pop industry was focused on being young and pretty.

Looks are the first thing that usually intrigues a person and gets them interested. I still remember Kumi saying avex refused to promote her because she was "fat" to their standards. Leah wasn't an excellent singer and her Japanese was poor but she was popular because she was very pretty.

However I think looks are only work to a certain extent. If the artist is attractive, they will attract fans in the short term. However if they have no talent/bad management/etc.. their fanbase will soon fade unless their fanbase was actually formed from another career like acting/modeling.

I very much agree. In the end, it really is survival of the fittest.

ouch that's horrible

too bad in a way she gave into pressure cos I'm sure she was pretty good looking prior to that stupid comment avex made on her :eviltongu

mcluva420 23rd January 2009 06:00 AM

the record companies think looks matter. and looks do attract the attention of people. even if the artist is "ugly", the company will hire tons of makeup artists to beautify the singers, plus tons of photoshoppin...
