Utada is the English language project name of 宇多田ヒカル (Utada Hikaru). She is a third culture singer-songwriter, arranger, and record producer in Japan and United States. Utada maintains this name in the west as she intends to keep her English style separate from her Japanese music. She has sold an estimated 33 million albums worldwide. Utada is fluent in both English and Japanese as she was raised in both New York and Tokyo. She is most notable in the west for composing and singing the Kingdom Hearts themes 光 (Hikari) and Simple And Clean, as well as the theme songs for Kingdom Hearts II, Passion and Sanctuary.

☆☆Utada.jp: Video Message from Stargate☆☆

Quote:

Utada’s Japanese website has been updated with a message from producers Stargate. The clip is a longer version of the footage that was originally shown in Island Def Jam’s electronic press kit. According to the attached Japanese translations, the track “Me Muero” was produced by Stargate and features lyrics referencing eating Godiva chocolates in bed.

Translation (A bit effy because it was translated through google)
Spoiler:
Mikkel S. Eriksen (less Mikkel): Utada and collaboration has been great. I had a very good time. To get us to listen to her music, I immediately hit it off from there. It was awesome and Vibe. And this is how to work with off-key, and have made music together, and sends back to us from Japan to take them to flesh out her case there was further developed, it was really fun process. I finally finished something great.

Tor Erik Hermansen (less Tor Erik): "Utada interested in a collaboration with Japanese artist? Her album of contemporary pop, urban pop I want to作RITA a purely contemporary album with" response when we approached the record company and said, "Japan? What Japanese artist knew? I do not know anyone" like I was. I met her, but full of confidence and the integrity of the body are漲RA to make a man of remarkable voices, I have been overwhelmed by the song that she sends back the first. Terms of lyrics and excellent vocals also. So once more it's Roh. First, we convinced them to try to do songs, and another and so do a song, it ultimately snowballed. I do not remember how many songs made the final at all, and the considerable number of songs, I do not look perfect.

Mikkel: Yes.

Tor Erik: And we also 80 and I love her music age. She is a little younger than I, but we know a lot of 80's songs, I was talking to each other of their favorite artists. , We "do you think you have a partially similar to Kate Bush," I said, she "Really? I love Kate Bush!" He said, "Well, Well It is important to point "of the story. And sometimes it can be similar to Madonna. Tell it to the pointe Liv, a vintage-era Madonna. The important point that, too. So we are just human, but an entirely different country, to get together to produce this album, the music I could find a common sound.

Mikkel: I think so. We had a lot to share that point, it was her best vocal performance. In the face and voice features and robust, though blessed with great talent as a songwriter, according to the land based on the expression of it, but it's more realistic. There are also songs which scenario, I would catch the ears of listeners at once.

Tor Erik: You know, "eat delicious chocolate lying on the bed" (Note: The Me Muero's from) I phrase I書KEYASHINAI anyone else (laughs). The expression that we hear is that the first life, I really do not know where I thought, I guess it's a place where great.

Mikkel: I am probably rooted in real places. I was reminded of the scene from.

Spoiler:
‘One’ Love
Japanese Superstar Utada Aims To Conquer The States
By Rob Schwartz

What do you do when you’re a J-pop superstar in Japan, and a native English speaker, but have failed to take off with your first U.S. release?

Try again, of course. Japanese phenomenon Utada will release her new English-language record, “This Is The One,” March 24 on Island Def Jam, with all parties predicting greater success the second time around. Her first English-language record, 2004’s “Exodus,” peaked at No. 160 on the Billboard 200, selling 55,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

“My first English album was a very experimental, mad-scientist-in-a-laboratory kind of album,” Utada says. “It was a bit of a mess on my side as well as on the record company’s side. I didn’t know how to [express] myself to the public.”

This time, Island Def Jam Music Group president/COO Steve Bartels says the label is “extremely committed to breaking Utada in the United States.” Kimitaka Kato, president of Universal International in Japan, says, “Utada’s talent has been recognized by [IDJMG chairman] L.A. Reid, which led to this launch. We believe that the moment has come for the world to embrace Utada as a true global superstar.”

She’s already achieved that status in Japan, despite being born and raised in the States, until she was 14. Her 1999 debut album, “First Love” (Toshiba EMI), is the best-selling album in Japanese history, selling more than 7.5 million copies, according to SoundScan Japan. All but one of her subsequent six releases have moved more than 1 million copies.

Managed by her father, Teruzane Utada, on both sides of the Pacific, her star status at home is such that she has separate deals for her Japanese repertoire — which appears on EMI under her full name, Utada Hikaru –– and English language releases, which come out through Universal under the name Utada. “Exodus” has sold more than 1 million copies in Japan, and “This Is The One” is due there March 14. But Utada says she remains committed to Japanese repertoire and is already working on her next Japanese album.

As for “This Is The One,” she says it’s “an album made for the purpose of [being] mainstream,” having enlisted top songwriter/producers with U.S. track records and strong ties to IDJ, including the-Dream, Stargate and Tricky Stewart.

“For this project, Utada wanted to work with some of the hottest producers on the charts right now,” Bartels says, “but more importantly they wanted to work with her. The-Dream, Tricky Stewart, Stargate and many others are big fans of hers, and all of us know what the U.S. and Europe are soon to find out — Utada is a star.”

Bartels says Utada’s American “sensibilities and sound” set her apart from other Japanese artists seeking stateside success, noting early press supports from Nylon, the New York Times and Vibe. A slot is also booked on CBS’ “The Early Show,” with more TV appearances to be scheduled.

Utada had her longtime hair and makeup artists fly in from Japan for key U.S. promo work after feeling her image wasn’t presented correctly in the States on “Exodus.” The artist says she’s feeling more confident about how she’s perceived this time around.

“I feel very comfortable about all the promotional work I’ve been doing,” she says. “probably because there is less of this hype about a Japanese pop star making a breakthrough that I struggled with last time.”

The last Utada thread got trashed because of spamming, fighting, and bashing. Please keep this new thread clean and peaceful or it will be trashed as well (and the creating of future threads may be put on hiatus). This is a clean slate. Also, as a reminder, religious pictures such as those featured in the last thread are not allowed in AHS, so please keep the Utada discussion religion-free. :)

@kokoro: So pooh. I found a a HQ version of the video tho. It's a bit much for MB but if you want it, I can give it to you.

Kingdom 8th March 2009 11:15 AM

are they gonna leak it to us by chance? ;)

oh well.. i guess it's the quality of the music and not the cd packaging. right?

Luv ~Venus~ 8th March 2009 11:18 AM

^LOL! I'm not sure. Some folks over at hikaru.sc checked copycat but they said it was no use joining there. [I guess because it's not gonna leak there.] I'm listening to the FYI preview now and the more I listen to it, the more I want it to leak now so I can hear the song in full. I said I wasn't going to dl it but.....I'm so confused on whether or not I should dl it once it leak. :cry

Kingdom 8th March 2009 11:23 AM

FYI sounds pretty good, i love the preview.. i think you should dl it and not torture yourself

Rogue 8th March 2009 11:35 AM

I've been listening to both previews a lot (actually set them on repeat and played a bunch of tetris games with them on XD )
I'm starting to appreciate Utada as a songwriter more and more :o

The lyrics of Dirty desire that say "I'm thinking 6 to 9" can be interpreted in a lot of ways, like someone (sorry but I forgot who) understood the lyrics first as "sex tonight", it can be interpreted as a pose (no need to make a drawing heh ^^; ) , it can be seen as a mention to a time-spending. I like the references like the one to full metal jacket and the overall feel of the songs (yes I love Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI a lot too ^^ )

Other artists lyrics, like Britneys music don't have that many layers and well-overthought lyrics.
What someone said about Utada not liking to wear skirts because she felt it as people were thinking she was a prostitue, the lyrics of Easy Breezy make much more sense to me now.
Everytime I learn something new about Utada, her work overall gains deeper meaning for me.
I love being fan of an artists that's smart in so many ways.

Btw especially Dirty Desire reminds of Britney work.. Can't help, but it really feels like that to me, and I mean it as a compliment.
This music will really help her making it in the US and A (Borat was on tv last night XD )

Edit: Luv, I think you might download the leak since you're intending to buy the album anyway huh?
Lieke was right when she mentioned that it was like pre-listening an album in a music store ^^
Hence, nobody buys albums that they don't like, ne?

I really hated Exodus when first it was out... I keep listening to it thinking "why did they do with my favorite songwriter T-T"... A friend of mine that had a hikki fansite (the site is down and my friend passed away some years ago) asked me to translate the album (even if my writing English is far from being the best, I think I'm pretty good into translating from English to Portuguese). So, when I started the translation process, I saw how complex the lyrics were... Some parts could be read in 2, 3 ways and of all them made sence with the rest of the song! There were so much irony and so many inteligent references and word games... It took me 3 days with the help of 2 friends (I didn't want to miss anything, so I could make the lyrics justice). When it was all done, I couldn't help... I was in love with the album^^ And then I took a look at some of her japanese lyrics, and then I understood that many of then was much more than plain love songs...

I really think Hikki is the best songwriter pop music have this days

Merry Christmas and Dirty Desire are not bad...i like the melody and the feel of the song..

Queen Bee 8th March 2009 06:30 PM

So I finally watched Come Back To Me and I have to say I really like the music video but I'm really not liking the song. I'm not sure what it is about it but I just can't seem to get into it. I did however really REALLY like Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI, Apple And Cinnamon, and Dirty Desire (I really didn't like the line 'Me Love You Long Time' but it's just one line so it's nothing to dwell on for me) just from the previews. They are a little sexual but that's okay, everyone needs to let go every one and a while. on the other hand I really did not Taking My Money Back. I started to laugh a little at the title and when I actually heard I laughed a little harder. I personally don't feel the song flows very well from what I heard in the preview. As for the cover I personally don't like it and I do see a few things wrong with it but I won't give my critique about it unless anyone wants me to since some people thought I was being negative about NEXT LEVEL by just giving my professional critique about the cover.

dreamland2.0 8th March 2009 06:49 PM

I really love the preview of Apple and Cinnamon! Taking my money back is okay - haha at the lyrics again :)
This album sounds very promising!!!

amorphose 8th March 2009 07:13 PM

I'm feeling Dirty Desire and FYI more than Taking My Money Back or A&C. I like them all though. I REALLY wanna hear Automatic Part II! I hope it starts out like the old school Automatic. That'd be an orgasm. XD

Sundae 8th March 2009 07:14 PM

Well, Apple and Cinnamon sounds promising. Taking My Money Back sounded normal. Nothing really jumped out at me this time. Still love FYI.

njanjayrp 8th March 2009 07:21 PM

A&C is ok, a bit repetative for me. I find Taking My Money back boring. All the songs so far seem to have a similar beat and come down to repeating lines in the chorus. Where did the creativity go?

So far A&C and FYI sound like something I would listen to.

Luv ~Venus~ 8th March 2009 07:55 PM

Taking My Money Back >>>>>>> Apple and Cinnamon

I love both previews but TMMB was more of an attention grabber than A&C plus I love the melod/beat. I'm surprised nobody mentioned the line where she said "the sex was so good." :rolleyes So I'm gonna expect no whinning if we hear another "wild" line from her. :yes

Queen Bee 8th March 2009 07:58 PM

^ the thing is I don't find it to be too wild for a US release.

[kokoro♥] 8th March 2009 08:05 PM

@Luv; Yes plz, girlie! I can make hawt sets if I can make HQ caps XD

no wonder she felt it was too easy to write A&C; its the same words over and over!

and TMMB made me lol xD;

I like FYI and Dirty Desire sound quite a bit better [personal opinion]

Polyrhythm 8th March 2009 08:12 PM

Japanese release with the little OBI strip:

Iunno.....looks pretty real to me....on the other hand, Japanese people make brilliant bootlegs.....=/

oh yeah credits to UtadaNet.com......again. Thats definitely the site to watch...

[kokoro♥] 8th March 2009 08:17 PM

^If its a bootleg with all the full songs let them release it...
like right now LOL ;D

OMG I totally agree... TMMB is so R&B, but I bet a lot of her American fans don't have any interest in that sort of stuff (except a few like us :laugh). But I love it so much. It sounds so much like "One In A Million" by Aaliyah, actually, especially the drum beat.

Amrai-chan 8th March 2009 11:25 PM

Out of the new previews I liked Taking My Money Back.

I remember when people first started talking about Apple and Cinnamon. I was thinking "This song should be good!" But the preview is kind of 'meh' so I hope the full song is better.

jbrat2219 8th March 2009 11:29 PM

Are the other previews on her official website?

kang daesung 8th March 2009 11:42 PM

^Go check. It's not hard, lol.

Keiichi_JPU 9th March 2009 12:19 AM

So... when is her American album releasing?

I'm completely lost about it.

YesAsia says:

03-24-2009 US Version $13.49
03-14-2009 JP Version $31.49

If that's correct I won't hesitate ordering the US version. It saves a lot and only releases 10 days later.

But if it's true the US date got pushed back to May... I'll order the Japanese version.

I'll email YesAsia about it as well.

EDIT: Their Customer's Support email address is nowhere to be found.. or maybe I'm just blind. does somebody have it?

~X2RADialbomber~ 9th March 2009 12:58 AM

Her lyrics in her album seem to be pretty sexual, but if she's trying to crack into the American market, she has do what everyone else is doing otherwise she won't even get noticed. However, they should have probably changed her image too (the cover doesn't really match the music, tbh)

hayasaki 9th March 2009 01:04 AM

Apple and Cinnamon is so <3

GRACE 9th March 2009 02:03 AM

The Apple & Cinnamon and Taking My Money Back previews are definately 10000x better then the last two previews they released. They actually sound promising. My excitement for this album is raised by ten points from zero to ten

stickyrice 9th March 2009 02:05 AM

Weird.... I thought I commented on the latest previews....

Anyways - I'm definitely loving the preview for Apple and Cinnamon! Taking My Money Back is good as well but I'm not as excited for that as I am for the rest.

Side note: I recently lost my file of Passion ~opening version~ in 320 kbps. It just...disappeared off my computer. :( Would anyone happen to have a copy?

CoriKaru 9th March 2009 04:32 AM

Not impressed with the 2 new previews.

And I'm all for sexuality and confidence but, "The sex was so good"???

That's worse than, "One in a million".

*Sound of expectations plummeting*

Kingdom 9th March 2009 04:51 AM

i like apple and cinnamon preview. it & FYI sound so good <3

kang daesung 9th March 2009 05:34 AM

Wow, brilliant lyrics, IMO in the new previews. They are so great and awesome. Hikki knows how to take everyday life and make it kawaii and artistic :yes

The video is sooo cute too, haha.

"Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI" sounds good as expected. Was very anticipatory of this song ever since I heard the Original from which they pulled the sample and it doesn't disappoint.

I'm not one to guess at which songs would hit it off if it were made a Single b/c you can't really guess at that, but I can definitely see this taking off on the radio.

kang daesung 9th March 2009 11:47 AM

^The lyrics are too weird for radio, sorry. :no "Dirty Desire" is better for that sort of thing.

I give you my heart
Hold on, let me sign it
Your senorita aka your best friend
Hereby, let it be known
Love like never before
I'm always at your service
You just have to holler at me

NYC, NYC, woah woah
Tokyo, Tokyo, woah woah
Send it off from the streets to the highest
To the highest, high

MP3, MP3, players
Work it out, work it out, hustler
Oh, my name got him there
Mmm, mmm, mmm

You know why
I'm gonna be yours tonight
We're gonna ooohaaah
FYI
We're gonna be up all night
I'll see you later
Call me, you know my number

Like Captain Picard
I'm chilling and flossing
It's 7 o'clock
I issue the warning

Thats right, we're stealing the show
Damn right, letting him know
We're sipping chardonnay from 2 PM on our working day

Chinga-ling Chinga-ling
Chinga-ling Chinga-ling
Take me down to the fields where the grass is
Where the glasses lie

MP3, MP3, players
Work it out, work it out, hustler
Oh, my name got him there
Mmm, mmm, mmm

You know why
I'm gonna be yours tonight
We're gonna ooohaaah
FYI
We're gonna be up all night
I'll see you later
Call me, you know my number

See if I don't need a freak
No, damn right
No, I don't want to feel no terror
If you want a piece of this stuff
Got to give, got to give something

You know why
I'm gonna be yours tonight

This song is ****ing hot.

Zeke. 9th March 2009 07:03 PM

I've always loved the tune of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.
This song is really nice - it's very "Utada Hikaru" actually but it'd fit in well with the Exodus album even. Doesn't seem like something that America would go crazy for though. It's too mellow. I like it a lot though.

Purple Neko 9th March 2009 07:04 PM

Hmm, I don't know :s
No ones says she's going to release this as a single (though I'd love her to) but there were stranger songs than this one, and also songs that somehow remind me of this one (like Mario Winans with "I Don't Wanna Know") that got pretty high on the charts.
We'll see how america is going to react to her, eh? ^^;
Cross our fingers and lets hope she'll make it this time! (together with BoA)

AyumiFanGuy 9th March 2009 07:53 PM

I gotta say, I really like FYI, but I seriously get hung up on the part where she sings "MP3 MP3 players". This is so out of nowhere for this song and really doesn't make much sense as part of the message of the song. Maybe I'll get used to it and not really care anymore. I mean if Britney Spears can sing "womanizer womanizer oh baby you're a womanizer", and me look past it, I should be able to get past this blip. Just thought I'd share my feelings. I'm seriously anticipating this album, after the -letdown- that EXODUS was. *crosses fingers*

really? O.o how the hell did she do that? lol. I guess there are more fans here then I had thought.

And she doesn't have any major competition (like Britney or Lady gaga, they ALWAYS win)

Lady_Eowyn 9th March 2009 11:28 PM

The only one i actually like is Merry christmas... The melody is very very beautiful. :yes

The others are pretty much for the average u.s. market. Too pop/R&b :eviltongu. may be too bland for my taste. But i have to wait for the othe tunes. I hope there are going to be more gorgeous tracks like MCML...

dreamland2.0 10th March 2009 12:41 AM

I love FYI! Such a catchy song!! Great job Hikki!

SheFliesHigher 10th March 2009 01:29 AM

Meehhh, nothing is really jumping out at me from these previews, although I really do need to hear full songs before I can form an opinion. The lyrics make me want to cry, though. "The sex was so good"? "If you want a piece of this stuff, you have to give a little"? *SHUDDER*

FYI is all right, but I wish it wasn't about such a stupid topic. BTW: I think the lyric "I don't want to feel no terror" is actually "I don't want a freeloader."

Andrenekoi: you talked about coming to appreciate Exodus after discovering the lyrics were so complex / clever. I was wondering if you could give me some examples? I actually really liked Exodus at first, but not because of the lyrics, so I'm hoping maybe you can open my mind a little. :)

AyUta 10th March 2009 01:35 AM
