Yesterday we had a break and she told me which music she likes.
I said: Oh! I love J-pop & J-rock too...
A: Do you have a favorite?
I: Yeah, I really love Ayumi Hamasaki
A.: Ah! Ayumi! I have a song of her, would you like to hear it?
I: Course

I: A. Ehm, Ayumi never had a song called butterfly. This is DDR's song.
A: Well, Ayumi covered it once...

Ehm yeah.. is what she said true?

Ayumi never covered 'Butterfly'.
The orginal version was just tagged incorectly in filesharing-programs like Kazaa or Emule and then all this rumors came up, that it's Ayu's song.

But she never sung this song and definately never covered it.

Will this annoying rumour ever die?

This songs belongs to Smile DK (DDR is the composer, right?), I heard it alot just before I began to listen to Ayumi, and then I found a song with the tittle "Ayumi Hamasaki - Butterfly". And I actually found it many places on the web. Then I looked in the description of the song, and I gone endless mad.

"This song in no way belongs to me. It belongs to the original artist who is written in the title. This song is for sample purposes only, if you like the song please obtain it legally by buying it at a local store to show graditude to the artist who made it. I do not give out copies of any songs uploaded. Wallpaper also belongs to the orignal artist."

WHAT? This is a big, fat lie, as this uploader obviously haven't bought the album/single himself. I have the Smile DK album, that the son belongs to, so I know this isn't true. I got so mad!

I don't know where the rumor started, or why, but it isn't Ayu's song, and she hasn't covered it. It doesn't even sound like her, and there is CLEARLY 2 voices!

Its also a song in Dance Dance Revolution game but I never thought it sounded like ayu

The voice is too high pitched even for Ayu xDD

I think the only covers she's done are: Sotsugyu Shashin, Bold & Delicious, Pride, rainy day, teens, In the Corner, Beautiful Day and Someday my Prince will come.
She might have a 1-2 other covers but I can't think of them right now and they're the main ones of her career.

Although I do wonder if NEXT LEVEL's tracks will make this rumor sound more authentic?

This rumour about Butterfly really really annoys me...even someone who isn't a fan should recognise that it's not her voice. :P
Also all you'd have to do is scan down her discography at wikipedia to know it isn't her song.

But it's really irritating, I remember ranting to Jpopasia about how Butterfly wasn't her song, and they said that google said it was. Pfft, it really annoys me. :p

When I first listend to the song... there also stand's that Ayu is the singer. And.. I listen to it.. and thought... "This is not Ayu... it is not her voice".

Sure was. I didn't know til I heard a Sweetbox best album and it was on there, it was so weird because I knew I'd already heard the tune before but couldn't place it was Ayu! xDD

The chorus is something like "In the corners of my mind/you're standing at the door/In the corners of my mind/you're asking me for more/In the corners of my mind/lalalalalalala(some lyrics I can't remember/In the corners of my mind/I'm still in love"

and I found this song in the internet and it said it was Ayumi ahah I remember I downloaded it

Even worse are the people who say Ayu sang My Will by Dream. I saw this video on youtube before and it said My Will by Ayumi Hamasaki and im like hmmm...and then i commented politely saying its dream not Ayu....and BAM. It was like 3 thumbs down...OMG retard! dont you know thats ayumi hamasaki! famous japanese singer! I have her CDs....and im just like...whatever...

This is one of my pet peeves. Everytime I see or hear something that says butteyfly is by Ayu, a little part of my soul dies...

Ayu does not have a song titled Butterfly. She has not covered a song titled butterfly. The only cover ayu has done is Sotsugyo Shashin.

The butterfly your freind played is from DDR and its by Smile.dk.

There are several ways to exploit this rumor, starting with almost no first language Japanese singer can sing with no accent, as Smile.dk doesn't. Smile.dk is swedish. Second, there are 2 distinct voices in the song. Last time I checked, Ayu is a solo artist. Thirdly, Neither of the singers sound anything remotely similar to Ayu. Also, the style is completely inconsistent with Ayu's musical style. Never has ayu done a bubble gum dance song. Up until NEXT LEVEL, all of ayu's albums have been rock and rock-pop. Even NEXT LEVEL is rock and electro-rock. (is that even a genre? I just made it up)

So what your freind said is completely false. Ayu is in NO way associated with the song Butterfly.

PS: I swear, I'm gonna end up starting a movement to end this rumor. I can't stand it when ppl say Butterfly is by Ayu. I have nothing against the song. Its a good song. But its NOT by Ayu.

If I'm not wrong it's VERY common to sampling without giving credits... like in Free & Easy^^ IMO it's not really a big deal, it's a very litte piece of music (and most of the time is used in a totally diferent way of the original)

I have heard Butterfly and I thought that it's not Ayu, even when I was a new fan. I had just heard A Song for XX album and I don't remember how I got to find that song but I really thought that "this ain't Ayu, no hell she isn't. She doesn't have good english." I never fell for this rumour. How long this rumour has been around? Very stupid rumour.

Btw, I love Itsuka no Merry Christmas. It's so beautiful when Ayu sings it. I really hated that Ayu & Gackt version, ugh. ._o

I think it's hard for them to collaborate because his voice is so deep and hers at those times weren't so low. IMO.
