[Funny] Utada commenting on Ayumi Hamasaki [Again..]

Jump to "1:20"... :roflmao

During an event at Sephora in New York today, Utada was asked who she would collaborate with, a guy in the crowd shouts out "AYUMI". * Utada's face is priceless*

You just have to love her <3
----------------------------------------------------------

Last time something similar happened was in 2005, on a radioshow...

kendelle 26th March 2009 03:18 PM

lol maybe one day she'll listen to those random crowd guys xD

Yoo Bin 26th March 2009 03:18 PM

Someone boo'd the ayumi idea. :laugh Hikki's face was priceless tho. She had that "not again" look on her face. So mean, but maybe one day they'll collaborate. :)

Foxxy_Fuyumi 26th March 2009 03:20 PM

The host said that doesnt like Ayumi? LOL

Lindsay Lohan vs. Paris Hilton xDD

Not~Yet 26th March 2009 03:35 PM

Lol that was cool xD I've seen the radio one before though.

When the host asked if she's something like Paris Hilton VS Lindsay Lohan I was like "NOOOO!" and then the crowd started shouting it too. XD

And I think someone shouted "knock her out!".... XD

And Utada Hikaru collab. with Freddie Mercury (when he was alive) would have been... Interesting. Utada singing the show must go on... xD

ayu_ready? 26th March 2009 03:35 PM

LOL

it's funny & sad at the same time

this interviewer comment made me angry :eviltongu

how could she compare our Goddes to these tow pieces of...whatever:thud

^LOL that was so weirdd haha

panda♥ 26th March 2009 05:04 PM

that lady must not know ANYTHING about the Japanese music industry. definitely no Paris Hilton vs. Lindsay Lohan type of thing going on. how ignorant...

edit: around the 2 minute mark the interviewer said something about Utada's dream collaboration and someone shouted "AYU!" again. XD

Hydeki 26th March 2009 05:08 PM

LOL, hikki's face it's so funny!

AyuGAME 26th March 2009 05:28 PM

her english is so GOOD...not so GOOD...but she IS american...
i don't like the reaction, with the "BOO..." and etc...
i don't know, maybe its just a subjective reaction from me as ayu fans...

ownsarai 26th March 2009 05:50 PM

lol Utada and Ayu's music is so different so I highly doubt it would ever happen. LOL @ that lady will fight Ayu...she has to get through her bodyguards first! xD

Anyway I laugh so much when the guy shout 'AYU'. Utada's face is really priceless XD

SURREAL__RAINBOW 26th March 2009 05:56 PM

panda87 26th March 2009 07:49 PM

she's like "omgaaaw... dont start..."

Melon Panda 26th March 2009 07:51 PM

LOL. Seriously hilarious.

Evolution7/4 26th March 2009 09:21 PM

I screamed AYUMI HAMASAKI a second after the first guy. When that idiot said the rivialry I SCREAMED "I LOVE THEM BOTH I LOVE THEM BOTH". hahah most people had same reactions just goes to show Utada fans are Ayu fans too and vica versa. i liked how when the radio person asked do we like her and we said yes Utada was nodding too. i think she likes Ayu alot.

Ayu_no_tenshi 26th March 2009 09:34 PM

her face didn't really change in reaction to the comment but ok.
it was a funny interview tho
and i'm sure she's sick of all the utada/ayu stuff
she's right. they dont' dislike each other but the media pushes the issue

I wish I had gone to this event!!

That must get really annoying after a while, this "rivalry" people keep bringing up. I love them both! I wish they would collaborate.

dreamland2.0 27th March 2009 02:55 AM

And ya I'd like to see that woman fight Ayu
IF she got past her body guards, Ayu would sick Peco on her to do her 'high kick'

oh yeah besides that I remember the interview that she nonchalantly said 'I think she (ayu) writes her own lyrics, doesn't she?'

LIKE DUH she knew that. I know it's not a big problem but oh well she never said 'She's a great/good artist'

Thank you! Someone else who feels the same way! Every time she goes on a show and boasts about how HUGE she is in Japan and WHO she is working with I want to throw something. She could use a piece of humble pie.

ayumixfan 27th March 2009 09:46 AM

^ really I think Utada is very humble whenever I watch her interviews.. I think she replied about ayumi in a very nice way. Seriously, people should not bring up ayumi whenever they can with utada... I think its really silly.

Wow really? I've always perceived her as being so humble and down to earth, she always seems completely unaffected by her mega stardom in Japan. She's a bit awkward and "geeky" as she said herself, but I'd never think snob.

LOL!!! Everyone that she wants to do a collab with are dead. XD Thats hilarious and sad.

rakeru 27th March 2009 12:46 PM

NO lindsey lohan and paris hilton! and NO to a Utada-Ayu collab; that would just be awkward with their style difference.

SolarAngel 27th March 2009 07:43 PM

Well, i guess the people who turned up for the event would be more savvy in japanese pop matters so it's not surprising they know who ayu is. The interviewer on the other hand, very uninformed... I don't think hikki and ayu would go well together, they each have such distinctive styles. I'd rather they stay solo and never collaborate.

Kagome-chan 27th March 2009 08:04 PM

Please can you tell me what they said?

I don't understand so much!

So...one said AYUMI!! and Utada said: a japanese singer...

and after?

I think no matter where she goes, if someone knows Jpop they're going to try and bring up Ayu... It's been like that since her debut really lol. Although I love Ayu, this was Utada's moment, and I could imagine it a bit awkward for her when yet again someone mentions Ayu when she's trying to promote her American CD.

I think if the roles were switched and someone asked Ayu a question about Utada (on the radio for example), Ayu would be like, "Utada?... ANYWAY MY NEW RELEASE IS GOING TO BE REALLY GREAT!" xD;....

jimex289 27th March 2009 09:01 PM

Lol I was going to go to that. As you probably saw in that video, there were a lot of people and limited space. That description of Ayu is all right...what Utada really should have said is: "She's the biggest thing that's happened in Japan since me". LOL.

ah no. She doesn't bring it up, the interviewers do. What should she do? Giggle and say nothing? If you've watched half the interviews she's been in lately, you'd see that. Plus she said in a Seattle interview that's the thing she hates - that most of her interviews focus on how popular she is in Japan rather than the music she is trying to sell in America. And I don't blame her - a lot of Americans can't get around the fact that someone can sell so many records outside their country.

She's very humble in interviews, she's got my respect as an artist. Utada and Ayu were popular at the same time, I think she really doesn't like those situations because it adds more fuel to the fire when there isn't a fire to begin with.

I know that her record company is responsible for much of the hype through their advertising, and while I cant say that I've watched every single interview she's ever done, I can refer to atleast one video, up on youtube a month or 2 ago, and the first thing that comes out of her mouth is "I'm huge in Japan but virtually unknown in the US". It was not an interview, rather a video she put up herself. No one is disputing how big she is or begrudging her any success, but its the way she says it thats puts me off as a fan.

ayuayu798 28th March 2009 06:09 PM

I would be a little annoyed too! lol At least he wasn't rude like that girl who got to talk to utada on the radio, just to ask her if she can ask ayumi to come to the USA too! How dumb is that!

I think Utada doesen't make a good prson ain these interviews (in english). SHe seems fairly arrogant and distant, ven though it's probably not her intention. ANyways, ayu's not really a musician, even if she may be a singer.

happiholic★ 28th March 2009 09:05 PM

I can understand that Utada would get a little annoyed with all the Ayu comments. I mean, she wants to talk about her album, and that's totally understandable. She's not there to promote Ayu, who is her competition.

And despite that the interviewer probably meant it as a joke, and doesn't know who Ayu is, she should refrain from making comments about fighting, as they can be taken the wrong way. Plus, like I said she doesn't know Ayu. For all she knows Ayu gets beaten by her boyfriend (not true, I know, I'm just making an example).

I just didnt find the right word when writing the comment, actually, I wanted to write artist, but yeah, she really isn't much of a musician.

I know, but, at least for me, composer and songwriter are not musicians, they are composers and songwriters and shes not a very good singer(singers for me are musicians), so I wouldn't call her good musician and ive never seen her playing an instrument, so she probably isnt a musician aside singing(only stories i read about piano, but we never saw that)

Woah man! That's a pretty messed up definition haha... She may not have outstanding vocal abilities such as [insert artist name here], but obviously it was good enough to get her through 10 years of her career. At the very least you can say her voice is average. I prefer to say she's an all-rounder who's pretty much balanced in every category, including the ability to compose, which is very rare in itself among J-pop artists nowadays. The same goes for lyric-writing. Musician is a broad term dude. Some people consider the voice to be an instrument. Anyone directly involved in the process of making a song could be called a musician, and Ayu would no doubt fall under this category. Composers and songwriters would then without a doubt fall under the category of being a musician and she happens to be both. The fact that she was at one point in her career involved in almost if not all aspects of creating songs from scratch leads me to believe she is an excellent musician. I fail to see how you separated composer and songwriter from musician (root word) when those are two of the most important aspects. What you're saying could be likened to referring to a dog by its breed but denying that it is an animal. Now that that's out of the way...

Yeah...people shouldn't have bought that whole thing up. It's insulting to both artists I think. You can't ask who Ayu is without saying something very lofty about her I think. She can't just be called any J-pop artist. Clearly a lot of those fans were fans of her Japanese stuff, and not American. Some were probably both but from the pictures of I've seen, the former is true.

You're kidding, right?

A composer that composes music is not a musician?

:roflmao LOL!!!!

Man, a composer IS a musician.:lech those guys wouldn't be able to compose anything if they didn't have a previous music education. Ayu, of course is an exception, but i think she was able to compose music since she is heavily involved in the whole making of her albums. In this new album, she is not credited for the music, but it's quite obvious from her pics in TA that she was -with composers as well- really focused on how the music should evolve along with the lyrics. :yes

So yes, a composer IS musician :)

noidea 29th March 2009 08:02 PM

Maybe its because I cant speak english very well(maybe the words usage is different?) but for me, people making the already written music are the musicians and the people writing the music are the songwriters/composers, thats how we learned it in school xD

Maybe ayu is an average singer, but average singers(at least when speaking of pop music) are no good singers, I actually really enjoy ayus singing, of course, i even like her live voice over her studio recordings where she sounds better, but i dont enjoy it because she sings good, i enjoy it because of the emotion she puts in it

Andrenekoi 29th March 2009 09:51 PM

Well... Ayu for sure isn't Mariah or Celine... but she sang some hard songs over the years and could put them off very well (Pride, M, is this love?, bold & delicious...), her vibratos are very hard to master and she can control her voice very well when she wants to (most of the time she sacrifice her singing in order to perform^^)

I would say she is a 7 (0 to 10), and this is better than most jpop singers (jpop is for from being a talent-centered music market)... she has a better voice control than... BoA, Utada, Namie, Koda, Ai Otsuka (even if BoA, Utada and Namie are around the same level as Ayu is)... but isn't better than Shimatani, Hirahara, alan, Ayaka....

I wouldn't say she is an amazing musician... but she is a very good pop songwriter, have composed amazing music (but they were just a few, so I can't say she is amazing), and even if she doesn't write anything but the lyrics, she makes sure everything is the way she wants it to be.... what is far from only receiving the music and singing it...

well that's not really the right definition of musician cause according to the dictionary

a musicican is a composer, conductor, or performer of music
so ayu is a musician~

Ayu_desu 29th March 2009 11:39 PM

Sorry but I agree with noidea. My definition may be traditional but I don't think Ayu is a musician. She may have composed some of her songs but I never found composing to be hard anyways. Just make up a melody in your head and that's it. Imo, the fundamental part of music is the harmony and if anyone can make that interact with the melody, then that takes a lot of skills. I would call J.S. Bach, Chopin and all those old composers to be musicians as they also perform their pieces.

Ayu is probably more skilled in connecting people with her lyrics and the emotions in her voice. But I can't say that she's a skilled singer.

jbrat2219 30th March 2009 12:05 AM

Musician (mu⋅si⋅cian)
1. a person who makes music a profession, esp. as a performer of music.
2. any person, whether professional or not, skilled in music.

Other definitions:

One who composes, conducts, or performs music, especially instrumental music.

One skilled in the art or science of music; esp., a skilled singer, or performer on a musical instrument.

Someone who plays a musical instrument (as a profession).

Artist who composes or conducts music as a profession.

Ayu is probably more skilled in connecting people with her lyrics and the emotions in her voice. But I can't say that she's a skilled singer.

...you're underestimating the whole process. Period. Maybe you play guitar or something but I can tell you right off the bat it takes a lot more than your simplification of the process. It doesn't take a genius to know that it involves more than just "making melodies in your head". Easier said than done too. If it's not hard you'd see a lot more J-pop artists composing their own works. The very fact that there's only a handful of well-known artists who compose their own works like Utada Hikaru, ayaka, Ai Otsuka, Angela Aki, etc. to name a few negates your statement. There's a reason it's usually left to people who specialize in that department. It has to be good, not something sub par. And it's not something anyone can just do and succeed at.

Are you saying you could have made evolution, Heartplace, winding road, Naturally, etc.?

Andrenekoi 30th March 2009 12:47 AM

To compose a melody is easy, to compose a good melody is hard, to compose a good melody that people would pay for... well, thats for few people =)

Evolution7/4 30th March 2009 12:50 AM

Can we just stop. This thread has been taken over by a rather pointless discussion.

It's pointless to you. We are not insulting neither bashing anyone or anything here. I don't see why we should stop just because you disagree.:rolleyes

Maybe its because I cant speak english very well(maybe the words usage is different?) but for me, people making the already written music are the musicians and the people writing the music are the songwriters/composers, thats how we learned it in school xD
Oh, don't worry man ;) it usually happens to all of us when english is not our native language :yes we come here (among other things) to learn :)

:eviltongu

Well...i must say i highly disagree with you. Compose is much more than just "imagine a melody" and that's the end of the story. :rolleyes Mozart was able to just "imagine" a work of art and then writing what he saw in his head, but he is one of very few... since we all know he was a genius. (he learned to play the harpsichord when he was three) Few people can do that, and to be able to compose and make something with harmony you actually need a lot of study. I think that your paragraph is very disrespectful to all people who has spent several years in conservatories trying to understand music, and concepts like harmony, rythm, tempo and even silence. Guys like Sergei Rachmaninov, Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov and Sergei Prokofiev (yes... i love russian composers :P) had previous studies in music schools before they became famous composers. Even pop composers like Lady gaga had music studies, and as Jimex said, if compose was such an easy task artists wouldn't hire people to compose for them.

And about Ayu... well, she is able to compose, wether if we like her compositions or not. Ergo, she is a musician, even if she doesn't play any instrument. You may like or not what she has done, but that doesn't change the fact that she can be considered a musician. May be not a "serious" one :rolleyes because she did not had music studies or because that's not exactly what she does for a living, but she is a musician because she is able to compose (sorry if i'm being too repetitive hehehe... :headache i'm afraid i'm creating a cacophony :dead2)

yoshino 30th March 2009 03:35 AM

hahaz. thanks for that vid.

I think quite many pple wanna see Ayu and hikki collab.. well, I can't imagine that yet.. :P

It is pointless when it only partially relates to this thread. Make a thread of your own if you wish to continue IMO. This has little to do with the initial point of this thread, a video of Hikki commenting on Ayu/any kind of ideas of a collabration. Sure it may not be a completly pointless discussion but within this thread, its unrelated and off topic.

Ayu_desu 30th March 2009 03:42 AM

I respect all of your opinion; I may have understated Ayu's ability, but while there are good examples of her good pieces, there are rather other stale melodies that she composed. I won't state which ones they are because everyone has different tastes and opinions of their favourite melodies.

I'm just stating that while the "official" definition may categorize her as a "musician", I don't recognize her as one.

Lady_Eowyn, please don't take my paragraph as an insult as I also study music and counterpoint. I just don't believe Ayu has studied music as in depth as those musicians that you stated, so which is why I hold such an opinion. She may just be a gifted composer... for some of her hit songs.

agreed. Just because there is no conflict doesn't mean its ok. I don't see how this has to do with hikki at all anymore :S ~! its just ayu.

Anyways I thought iwas kinda rude that they boo'd too. But I don't blame them... lol although, people should be more considerate. Poor Ayu >< ~! lol! It seems like Drama is always attached to her name lol!

ayuni 30th March 2009 06:07 AM

i think it disrespectful that the lady is threatening to fight ayu.
but i love AYUTADA's friendship forever.

It's called derailing or hijacking a thread and is against forums rules. Period.

Discuss ayu's profession in a thread about that.

AyuRox 3rd May 2009 03:41 AM

wow... Utada×Ayumi... That'd be interesting. But I'd listen to it. and buy it. and probably obsess over it... But that'd be really cool! I mean, they're, like, so different! it'd be really interesting to see what a collaboration between them would sound like.

omg, rock the boat. now THAT'd be funny!

I have brawler-game-like images of that hostess fighting through waves of bodygaurds to get to the final boss: AYU!!! DUN DUN DUN!!! *drops head* I know, I fail.

to end this noobish discussion about musicians, a musician IS:

A musician is a person who plays or writes music. Musicians can be classified by their roles in creating or performing music:

An instrumentalist plays a musical instrument.
A singer (or vocalist) uses his or her voice as an instrument.
Composers, songwriters and arrangers create musical compositions, songs and arrangements. These may be transcribed in music notation, performed or recorded.
A conductor leads a musical ensemble. A conductor can simultaneously act as an instrumentalist in the ensemble.
A recording artist creates recorded music, such as CDs and MP3 files.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
now, THE important part, to make sure some of you understand the whole musician concept, there are a lot of types of musicians. i can see some of you are linking musicians ONLY to be persons who play instruments, YOU'RE WRONG!!!

Types of musicians
Leaders
Conductor ˇ Bandleader ˇ Concertmaster

Composers
Composer ˇ Songwriter ˇ Arranger ˇ Orchestrator

Instrumentalists
Bassist or Double bassist ˇ Bassoonist ˇ Bandurist (Bandura player) ˇ Bouzouki player ˇ Cellist ˇ Clarinetist ˇ Drummer ˇ Euphoniumist ˇ Electronic musician ˇ Flautist ˇ Guitarist (Electric, Acoustic) ˇ Harpist ˇ Hornist (Horn player) ˇ Keyboardist (Keyboard player) ˇ Oboist ˇ Organist ˇ Pianist ˇ Percussionist ˇ Recorder player ˇ Saxophonist ˇ Sawist (musical saw player) ˇ Sitarist ˇ Trombonist ˇ Trumpeter (also Trumpet player) ˇ Tubist (Tuba player) ˇ Turntablist (DJ) ˇ Uillean piper ˇ Violinist ˇ Violist (Viola player)

Vocalists
Singer ˇ Rapper ˇ Screamer

I always thought this was cute. It's funny though when you realize that the rivalry isn't between Utadasaki but between their fans who over dramatize everything. That crowd was hilarious. And Utada is humble. Stating that you're big over in Japan during an interview where you're promoting yourself and being asked questions is not an ego thing. It's the answering of questions factually. Go watch an interview of Kanye West's to get an accurate definition of someone who needs to start choking on some Humble Pie pronto. And I mean "Jam it down your throat. You can't vocord no more" choke.

asmAyumi1992 3rd May 2009 05:38 AM

Wuh. They should brought Ayu there.

I hope nobody minds if i give my 2 cents worth. According to the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM), they conduct examinations for a HUGE variety of instruments, including modern percussion and voice. There's even harp lol and musical theory... So technical definitions aside, i would assume anyone who goes in depth into an instrument or musical theory can be considered a musician. And ayu has made a career out of it furthermore with her voice.

Maybe you can say Hikaru is more skilled a musician because she has more muscial knowledge and education but that's about it i suppose.

What gets me about that video is how the interviewer had next to zero knowledge about the J-pop music scene... But i feel it's a good move on Hikaru's part to try to break into the Western market. It's making good use of her multi-lingual abilities.

why put Lindsay and Paris up?
