A Song for XX is one of her saddest song imo, I mean "Being born alone, living alone, I thought that kind of live was normal" are damn sad lyrics. It can make me feel like crying when I'm feeling lonely.

A Song For xx makes me emo... but not in the crying kind... more like in the angry kind of emo lol. But good to see her SOMEWHERE there~

if we talk about her singing a song for xx before it being the karate theme at the one concert, then it is such a sad song.. it was always screaming hopelessness..
but now, she turned into a song full of rage and anger...

It's very personel a song who makes you cry, maybe you remember somthing of your life or something like that so I'm not surprised that a lof of ballads very sad aren't in the top !

every time I read the translation ( I can't really understand Japanese ) to ASFXX, I cry...

why it's not on the list?

The lyrics for ASFXX are sad but the arrangement is more angry than anything and that takes away from the sadness of the lyrics, for me anyhow. Now Heaven or Carols are songs that ALWAYS turn on the waterworks.

Yeah, I much prefer her early performances of the song, especially Dome TOur 2001. Now, the song is way too choreographed.

I'm not sure why all the Dearest mentions. That is actually one of the happier songs that she has ever written. Bitter-sweet kind of happy, but happy none the less.

I think they chose ASFXX because of the lyrics. When you just listened to the music you can't just cry because of the rock feel of the chorus. But I think it really does make me cry.

it's not weird at all...if you can understand the lyrics it's a very moving song. it's very emotional and strong. it's one of ayu's defining songs as she tries to find her place in the world and realize who she is as a person. surely, people relate to that. i've heard lots of people (who aren't really ayu fans) say that it's the song they remember the most of ayu and how when she first came out, hearing the song it makes you think "wow...she must have had a hard childhood. i wonder what happened to her but she still seems so strong."

Hmmm, seriously, A Song for XX's original version is not rock at all.

The original concept of the song does have this very lonely emotion to it that makes it very sad and hollow. Combined with Ayu's lyrics and the way she sang when she asked all those questions in the verse, this song is really very sad.

But ever since the release of the song back in 1999, it has changed so much. In A BEST it has kept some of its original qualities and the only thing that's changed is Ayu's voice that sounds far more desperate. (Although in a way I suppose you can also say it sounds more assertive. But that wasn't really what Ayu was aiming for I think.)

In A BALLADS the song made a 180 and became a rock number with Ayu sounding quite angry when she sings. XD I don't think this is the A Song for XX that makes people cry, and got a #8 in this poll.

i think A Song For XX is an emotional song...well it was the lyrics of it that won the hearts of many fans..so i guess thats why...the song SPOKE to them

but when you had a hard time and you sang ASFXX, you would cry

SunshineSlayer has a point though; Dearest isn't all out depressing. The last stanza... it's something like 'We have taken the roundabout way but we have finally arrived at this place"... it's very representative of how people start meeting each other and all... being so awkward and weird initially, and then when we all become friends, things just go good. That's like how Dearest is, for me, at least.

it's an emotional song for me, especially the lyrics. like waterballoon has said, this song is about feeling of being rejected by everyone around you. i think it's something that always happen to our society.

i always love the original A Song for XX, because ayu's raw vocal made the song even sadder somehow :(

Even so, dearest makes me feel the same sadness of untitled ~for her~.... something like... good memories in a bad situation thing, so... yeah, it has a very bittersweet feeling

Well, it had to go on one of them, and all of the ballads are on the Black album. The lyrics are about spending your life together with someone - it has a tinge of sadness in it, but she has definitely written sadder songs.

Well there's Moments and Voyage in A BEST 2 WHITE... but lol whatever, those are the slightly happier ballads anyways.

Anyway, I really respect Ayu's ability to include slight injections of happiness in sad songs, and slight injections of regrets in upbeat/happy songs.
