a question on "A Song for XX"

i've read on the internet its about her mom, but i've also read that its about her dad.

does anyone know for sure who the song is for?

pommy48 1st May 2009 05:01 AM

i think it should be for her mom

because in the version on ASFXX, she used the pronoun "they"

but in the new version on A BALLADs, she used the pronoun "you"

kendelle 1st May 2009 05:33 AM

I think it was for her mum, partly because she used XX which is female chromosomes, plus the song is pronounced "A Song For" and the XX isn't spoken. I figured it was because she didn't want to be blunt about her mother being the target of the song.

I think that her relationship with the mum was bad when she was young (Ayu dropped out of school and danced in clubs) but I think that as she's aged she understands more. It's nice that their relationship has improved :)

pommy48 1st May 2009 05:53 AM

^ OH!!!! so that's the meaning of XX!!! i thought XX was just to stand in for "unknown" :roflmao

but the correct way of tagging the X is with the multiplication sign @_@

jean-baptiste 1st May 2009 05:55 AM

oh i see.
thanks for the answers.

@pommy48: yeah i realized the that one part of the lyrics is different. i always wondered why.

@kendelle: ayumi danced in clubs at a young age!? shes quite rebellious. xD

btw, wikipedia is hella wrong. it says its for her dad. xD

pommy48 1st May 2009 05:57 AM

XD lol you can't trust wikipedia for these little kinds of little details ;)

Andrenekoi 1st May 2009 06:11 AM

She said in some interviews that "a song for xx" is for anything the listerner wants it to be... that's why it has the "xx", it's for the listener substitute for this thing or person he/she is thinking while listening to it...

she said also that her "xx" is her mom some time after, if i'm not wrong

waterballoon 1st May 2009 06:27 AM

Yeah for her mum. Songs for her dad would be like teddy bear and Memorial address.

I never looked at it that way o_o

mcluva420 1st May 2009 07:16 AM

yah.this is what i read from the websites.for her,the XX is her mom but we can name it someone else(its like fill in the blanks with your own words)

PinkShinigami 1st May 2009 08:45 AM

Well, it's all about her leaving to Tokyo.. But she didn't leave her dad, so I guess her mom

Hydeki 1st May 2009 12:31 PM

I think I read that the song is for her grandmother, that died in the hospital while she was in the studio recording her debut single Poker Face... I think that is from the documental "Light & Shadown" (2004).

keikeiaznqueen 1st May 2009 02:28 PM

Where is the difference between the lyrics in the original A Song for XX and the A BALLADS version?

Ohh! I found it. Woah, never noticed.

maikaru 1st May 2009 03:29 PM

The XX in the name is not really XX, it is japanese ××.
Batsu batsu means like "please fill in the blanks" etc.
and yeah, she changed the lyrics she uses in the song for A Ballads and all other concerts.
In my opinion, anata is a more harsh sounding word than mawari...
Anyways, yeah, I thought it was about her moving to tokyo, being alone, etc.
But she also said that this meaning could be substituted for other meanings, that's why batsu batsu~

chloeM 1st May 2009 04:39 PM

XX..... genes..... a woman~!

Uemarasan 1st May 2009 08:51 PM

I don't think XX = chromosomes. That would be a bit silly :) And it would be overreading.

This sounds like a more plausible explanation for XX. Batsu batsu. Blank, or not meant to be known.

Delirium-Zer0 1st May 2009 09:28 PM

Ayu said in the A Song for XX beatfreak interview that you're just supposed to insert whatever.

But the song is a message TO her mother, although the lyrics stem from what happened with her dad leaving. So it's for her mom, but about her dad. If that makes sense. lol :P

jean-baptiste 1st May 2009 09:33 PM

haha, the XX chromosone interpretation is intresting.

but i think the "batsu batsu" one sounds more likely.

Andrenekoi 1st May 2009 09:39 PM

She herself alread said that the xx means like "fill the blank"^^
And I don't really think that this song has anything with her dad

JackieRos 1st May 2009 09:59 PM

heck i thought it was for her dad

The title A Song for XX refers to Hamasaki's estranged father, whom she never knew. The title track refers to Hamasaki's move from Fukuoka to Tokyo.

wikipedia doesn't make sense what is it, for both?

>.>

pommy48 1st May 2009 10:13 PM

^ that's why you can't trust everything on wikipedia, they were probably edited by a misinformed fan

JackieRos 1st May 2009 10:38 PM

^but wikipedia is a good website even though they get things wrong sometimes

i trusted wikipedia ehe

we have to see the official english lyrics to really know
too bad there are no OFFICIAL translations

jean-baptiste 1st May 2009 11:01 PM

LOL!

wikipedia says 2 different things. xD

pommy48 1st May 2009 11:07 PM

you can depend on wikipedia for like her single releases or something, but not personal small details like that

and masa's translation are really great, and besides, there will never be an official english translation~

JackieRos 1st May 2009 11:25 PM

it will be cool thought
i want official but there is none

well, if she EVER decides to release her albums, dvds or something in countrys outside asia(under a minor label without promoting them or something, many artists do that) therell be an english translation sheet coming with it, so it IS possible, but unlikely

JackieRos 2nd May 2009 07:04 PM

yah just like Dir en grey's Kisou (i think) album it had an extra sheet with all of the lyrics in english

pommy48 2nd May 2009 07:41 PM

XD well tell me when that actually happens~

JackieRos 2nd May 2009 08:27 PM

it happened :P

heh i wish

mimika 3rd May 2009 05:55 PM

i thought the song is for herself

the lyrics has a lots of desperation and growing up which is the same as what ayu feels at the beginning of her career. (why would she talk about growing up if she's writing about her mom/dad?)

especially the line:

They always said I was a strong child
Even praised me as great because I didn't cry
I never wanted to hear such words
So I pretended not to understand

makes me feel it's takin about ayu herself, 'cuz we all know how ayu is also by herself when she was young, her dad is gone, her mom works 24/7 to support the family, so it gives ppl the impression that ayu is very mature, that she doesn't cry to others, but in fact she hates that, she'd rather have her family and being taken care of

pommy48 13th May 2009 12:15 AM

^ oh if you look here

from masa
Quote:

THEY always said I was a strong child
Even praised me as great because I did not cry
As PEOPLE AROUND said like this more
I came to feel a pain even when I smiled (The first album and "A BEST")

sonna fuu ni MAWARI ga ieba iu hodo ni
warau koto sae kutsuu ni natteta (The first album and "A BEST")
and here~

As YOU said like this more
I came to feel a pain even when I smiled ("A Ballads)

sonna fuu ni ANATA ga ieba iu hodo ni
warau koto sae kutsuu ni natteta ("A Ballads")
and also what masa said about who the song is for
Quote:

The hidden meaning of "A Song for XX" is "Ayumi's song for Mother". She had a repulsive feeling against her mother in her childhood, but dared not make it clear in the song when she wrote the original lyrics at the age of nineteen. But she is such a honest person that she corrected the word and made the fact and her feeling clear. This is my supposition. (She has sung this song in the rock style changing the related part of the lyrics since the Dome Tour, if I remember right.)

jean-baptiste 13th May 2009 04:05 AM

@mimika: of course its ABOUT ayu. shes talking about herself. but its FOR her mother. its written for her. kinda like shes speaking to her.

wannajoin_Team Ayu 13th May 2009 07:59 PM

thanks for explainning :P

now i understand why ASF in A BALLADS was called "Session 2" i not realized this change

pommy48 14th May 2009 12:08 AM

^ yeah and also she rerecorded it~ so that's why :D

ownsarai 14th May 2009 02:08 AM

Oh I never realized she changed the lyrics! Thanks for that info~
