Did you ever have an artist where you hated their vocals, but loved their music?

So, I've been downloading a bunch of things, and am taking forever to get around listening to all of it...but anyway...

I'm trying out a j-techno (I guess) artist called marino. I really, love her music. The backgrounds are really cute and interesting, they seem to have a lot of different styles that they have seemed to really wonderfully trasncribed into electropop.

So like for me, a lot of her tracks remind me of like acid jazz, mixed with music that could be used as the soundtrack for Katamari Damacy lol

The first track is an interlude...so when I listened to it, I was like "yes this is great"...

then the second song, she starts singing...and...:thud She's got that cutesy japanese voice...which I just dislike with passion...

I think she sings in a higher pitch than ai otsuka...and cuter than ayu's girlish/honey tracks...which is just...not for me at all...So...I'm really disappointed...because I really like everything going on in the background...if only she just wouldn't sing! lol

Have any of you felt this way about an artist? Which ones?

PS. If you like...electropop, you may like marino! She kinda reminds me of like a cross between Perfume and Hello Project or something with a dash of r&b elements...but not really lol and you have been warned about the vocals~

fantasma3c 6th May 2009 01:27 AM

Hmmm....
Good question

Id have to say....

Really idk

brand new love 6th May 2009 01:27 AM

i'm not much of a fan of miliyah kato's voice, but i love her music.

can this apply to a group too? i love 8eight, but when the rapper sings.. :no he has a really high voice and it's out of tune. it sounds disgusting.

JackieRos 6th May 2009 01:28 AM

oh wow yes i hate cutesy song makes want to shoot myself

i want to try her out Marino what?

Kana is a example to other people but I love Kana and her voice

love in music 6th May 2009 01:30 AM

Britney Spears. she sings with a really weird voice sometimes, like very babyish and annoying, but she has really catchy songs that make up for it

emi♡ 6th May 2009 01:31 AM

^ooo that's like a near perfect example.

yeah! I actually feel that way about a lot of japanese rappers lol like kuu's Mr Bistah...

not for me :laugh but I <3 Candy.

Amrai-chan 6th May 2009 01:56 AM

Good thread.

I feel that way about a lot of Ayu's older songs. Other aritists I'll have to think about that...

I just gave marino a try. The music is good. You're right about the voice though.

Ugh.

Kazeyomi 6th May 2009 02:16 AM

Kana's music.
Some of her song has a really nice arrangement, but her voice ruin everything x_x
I can said the same for Nana Kitade.

chloeM 6th May 2009 04:45 AM

Vanessa Hudgens~

PoetGirl 6th May 2009 06:11 AM

yeah, rihanna is perfect example, and her well known song umbrella. i love the beat of the song and everything about music but her voice.... I CANT STAND.

waterballoon 6th May 2009 08:32 AM

Britney Spears! Her voice can be so bad sometimes, especially when she "grunts"... omg. But her songs are all so awesome! <3

I was going to say the same thing. I really like the arrangements in Kana's music, but her voice is so high pitched and grating sometimes. It took me ages to get through Hebi Ichigo. (and now I love that song) :laugh

I really like Nana's voice. I can't stand it when she did Siren, I think that was the only time I didn't like her voice.

Foxxy_Fuyumi 6th May 2009 12:44 PM

Personally, Ai Otsuka doesn't have a great voice but I LOVE her music.
Morning Musume and some other Hello!Project artists.
Shoko Nakagawa, that's a voice disaster...

Linoa62 6th May 2009 01:00 PM

Mika Nakashima.
I wanted to try her music and at first I liked it but when she began to sing, I thought to myself "OMG that's awful" XD

xLuna&1LOVE 6th May 2009 02:03 PM

Ai Otsuka, her music is okay, but her voice is TERRIBLE
The same here for OLIVIA

noidea 6th May 2009 03:46 PM

Pillar, I love the songs, but the singer, Rob, is just awful o.0 He cant sing at all, he sounds good while screaming and grownling though

JackieRos 6th May 2009 10:11 PM

hey i love kana >.<

I immediately loved her voice idk why

I had the exact same experience with her XD! I totally couldn't take that voice either.

For me, most of the American pop I listen too I don't like the vocals, like, Britney Spears. But I love the music XD

Ayumi27 7th May 2009 01:47 AM

That happened when I started listening to Ayu and Kana, but then I got accustomed to their singing voices
The same goes to some western rock bands

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 7th May 2009 03:54 AM

Britney Spears: Like in "Womanizer" she sounds baby-ish but also deep. Croaks too.
Rihanna: Only noticed when GGGB came out. "Umbrella" is a good example. Magazine~~
Shiina Ringo: I've gotten used to her voice somewhat. There are times I think my ears will bleed.
MEG: the decibels the vocoder can reach sometimes due to her poor singing :shakehead

emi♡ 7th May 2009 03:59 AM

oh...okay I'm sorry to have to say this...but Fruit Salad...your sig just reminded me lol

(I can't take OLIVIA's vocals...at all) I want to! I really do...but man...they annoy me lol

about MEG, that's interesting...I never hear many people talking about her voice...I never listened to her though.

mcluva420 7th May 2009 05:33 AM

everyone who doesnt rlly have vocal talent that has nice catchy songs -___-
BoA, rihanna, etc...
BoA is OKAY though, its mainly rihanna
i'll remember more soon

brand new love 7th May 2009 05:37 AM

wow i forgot about boa

i can't stand her voice

pommy48 7th May 2009 05:43 AM

umm britney, rihanna~ i just like the beat of their music

maybe ai, i don't really like her voice that much

maybe boa a bit, i just thought her music on BoA were pretty good, but too much vocoder
also ami's FREE FREE too~

Aderianu 7th May 2009 05:56 AM

Tourbillion (and Luna Sea of course)
In flames and all other in the same style

Madonna. @____@;

And....

Britney Spears.

...Miley Cyrus.

-sweatdrop-

milky_way 8th May 2009 07:29 PM

Britney Spears

aurinko. 8th May 2009 09:40 PM

Britney for me too :) I just can't stand it! And she has quite catchy songs :D

also midori - the vocalists voice was quite awful for me but now I like it :)
but it's also because the music is just so good :love
highly recommended!

kendelle 12th May 2009 05:40 AM

I loathe Lily Allen's lyrics and her voice is annoying, but her music is so catchy =__=
I sometimes don't like Mika Nakashima's voice or Perfume vocals either, although again the music gets stuck in my head.

AyuRox 20th May 2009 01:43 AM

I just started listening to a sample of her music on iTunes. :thud I can feel brain cells dying... I was like, OMG!!! squeaky!-but I love the music-but the voice is so annoying-but how cool is the music itself?-aaaahhh!!! the voice! So yeah, I totally see where you're coming from. Its kinda like how I am with Sayaka Suzuki. I like the music, but the vocals are a little weird.

Hazuki 20th May 2009 01:49 AM

Lily Allen.
OK, I don't hate her voice, but I don't like it that much either.
It's like a voice I can listen to, but my face looks like this ~ :irked

NintendoHTF1242 20th May 2009 02:30 AM

Maki Goto >_>

SOME BOYS! TOUCH has a hot beat and all. But damn at her vocals in that song! They are like, not that good xD no offense lol

dreamland2.0 20th May 2009 04:09 AM

Ali Project

Their music is awesome, however Arika's voice is sometimes hard to listen too :P

Bellmer's Doll 20th May 2009 04:11 AM

Nile - I love the combination of heavy metal music and old Egyptian instruments but I loathe their death metal vocals

chloeM 20th May 2009 06:23 AM

ooh ooh .... another one...

Demi Lovato... love her song to death... the Don't Forget.. but starting of the song... her vocals are just weak

Kobayashiwoof 20th May 2009 06:49 AM

Leah Dizon

*Petit* 20th May 2009 01:03 PM

Koda Kumi :headache and tons of angloamerican artists that sing in the apparantly desired manner showign off their great technique and voice control wailing throatily about. >_< This includes people like Christina Aguilera, jade and others. I just can't stand it. I prefer listening to several morning musume girls without voice control than that kind of voice.

evolution7931 23rd May 2009 01:13 AM

MOSTLY AYU.. evolution is a disaster vocally

luna7996 23rd May 2009 11:32 PM

I know a lot of people will glare at my post but I have to be honest:

Namie Amuro: She is sooo pretty, her music is catchy, much love to her dancing, but her voice.... I dont know.

There is a difference between having a good voice and knowing how to sing. Some people have nice voices and sing terrible. Some people have not-so-nice voices but know how to hit their high notes and low notes flawlesly. I think Namie is the later. She can sing beautifully but I dont really like her voice.

SORRY TO ALL NAMIE FAN!!!!
Its just my opinion.
Dont be to mad,please.

Are you serious? ROFL.

Hmmm... there's a few...like sometimes Shiina Ringo's voice is a little annoying, but I still love it...weird.
But generally, if I don't like the voice, I won't listen.
Also, it annoys me when people sing in really bad English and the entire song is in English... o.O

I think I get you, I'm listening to Namie at the minute, and I can tell she sings good, and she's hitting all these high notes and such...but her voice...it's kinda flat? I like her, but she sings as if she has better things to do. xD

aloopy 26th May 2009 11:09 PM

*glares at all the people who mentioned namie*

nah just kidding.

anyway imma go for britney spears/lady gaga/katy perry. their songs are quite catchy.. but that's kinda it

CaseNumber:825 29th May 2009 01:56 AM

Katy Perry came to mind immediately.... mainly beause she's not good as a live singer, but her songs are insanely fun and catchy.... I'm looking at you Hot N Cold

A lot of J-Pop artist that have this insanely cutesy voice during all of their songs. Artists like Ai Nonaka and Ai Otsuka are lot like this and their music is great, but their voices grate on my nerves sometimes.

Those are the main people I can think of

Polyrhythm 29th May 2009 02:05 AM

I might just have to say Ayumi Hamasaki. Sorry but its no secret that her vocals arent some of the best...Then again, she does account for like 70% of my entire jpop collection :P

~Inori~ 29th May 2009 03:11 AM

P-p-p-p-poker face p-p-p-p-poker face. And of course Ayumi's, at time.

Calico 29th May 2009 08:36 AM

There are lots of artists like that for m,e but I guess Mika Nakashima is at the top. I feel like she would make great chill-out/working music, but I just can't get past how much I cant stand her vocals.

I agree with you when it comes to her ballads, NEVER END and Can you celelbrate especially.

koumori 29th May 2009 10:14 AM

I hate the Nickelback singer's voice, but the music is so so catchy! @_@

I hated Rockstar, but Far Away and Photograph are..actually okay songs to listen to..LOLL. ^__^'

I never heard a CAN YOU CELEBRATE? performance sound remotely good. Thanks to TK ban on his songs, I don't have to worry about it. Seriously when people say she sounds good live, I only half way believe them. Namie's my fave second solo female artist but yeah, just no to CYC?.

PinkShinigami 30th May 2009 07:08 PM

Yeeh, Gackt. But well, I haven't herd much of him, but I liked his music much better than his vocals!

And the other way round, Amano Tsukiko. She make's kinda.. Wierd music, but her vocals is AMAZING!

mcluva420 31st May 2009 07:34 AM

lols, i really enjoyed namie's voice in NEVER END ^_^
she did some really nice vibrato on that song live too ~

asmAyumi1992 7th June 2009 06:55 PM

Most Japanese (but not Ayu).
I like most of their songs. But, a lot of them had weird voice and annoys me so much. But I love their music.

Tom Punks 18th June 2009 01:45 PM

Utada Hikaru. Omg. I love her music but I cannot STAND her voice. It sounds so gross and old now! When she was younger, it was much better. :(

Also, like Luna62, I love some of Nakashima Mika's music but her voice is not so pleasant to my ears. :( It's a lot better now than it used to be though.

KAT-TUN. I love their music but none of them can sing except Jin. Plus they are always SO out of sync with each other that their music sounds very sloppy and badly produced.

alan... Except when she's wailing, I really don't like her voice very much.

Suzuki Ami of course... That one is kind of implied.

visionfactory 18th June 2009 04:52 PM

leah dizon, but only her older works.

softly would be such a beautiful ballad if someone with good vocals sang it. same with everything anything (or w/e it's called) and koi shiyou.

I'm also specifically talking about the intro with the "yeahs" of is this love? and some of her really bad performances live. too sqeaky, too much vibrato, if it wasn't for her music I wouldnt listen to her.

rookies 19th June 2009 05:16 AM

I can't think of any artist where I like their music, but don't like their vocals. Hmm... *thinks*.

sora2522 19th June 2009 06:44 AM

i think i enjoy pretty much everything but i can say where i think people has flaws/where i can see people not liking them:

ayumi - I HATE HER VIBRATO MY DEAR LORD X_____X but most of her music sounds good.
shiina ringo - lots of people i know equated her singing to death. my mom even called her donald duck >.>; (she loves her now. thank you heisei fuuzuoka on repeat!!)
koda kumi - it's more in her recent works, but she sounds so...forced...compared to songs like BOYFRIEND? it's drastically different :(
kana - ...have you HEARD her sing?? seriously??? it's like @______@
Do As Infinity - i know one person called tomiko van a "drunk goat" >.>;
Kanako Ito - that same person called kanako's voice "ugly"
leah dizon - her scooping makes her sound drunk at times
misono - WHAT IS THAT HIGH-PITCHED SCRAPING??!!! end=START would've been SOOOOOOO much better if it wasn't THAT SCREECHY (kinda more like in her mste live)
ALI PROJECT - after a while, her voice kinda gets a bit tiring. i know the leader of the group said he wanted a vocalist like shiina ringo, so that could be partially why
ami suzuki - her voice is kinda...eh....
anna tsuchiya - her voice is kinda different, and sometimes it doesn't fit. for instance, Brave vibration. her voice doesn't really suit the song
KOTOKO - oh. my. god. sometimes her voice just shatters everything in sight. like, just. my dear lord X___x
nanase aikawa - her voice is kinda strange too, like anna tsuchiya. i can't really describe it >.>;;
yuna ito - at times her voice kinda punches you in the face and it's like WHOAAAA. also, during ima demo zutto, she's underpitch in the intro, which always irks me
sarah brightman - don't get me wrong, she has a beautiful voice, but it doesn't really suit her songs at times. for instance, Le Fleurs du Mal needs a bit more of an edge in the vocals that she doesn't really provide =\
rihanna - nasally at times...
within temptation - one friend said he didn't like the vocalist's voice =\
most male japanese vocalists - THEY ALL SOUND THE FREAKING SAME WTF??!!!

i'm brutal. i know. ^_^v

pommy48 19th June 2009 06:49 AM

honestly...if I can get used to Ayu's early day vocals, her new vocals don't bug me so much...

except when she yells and thinks it's singing.

zyoeru 19th June 2009 11:48 AM

ROFL! emiko, Ayu can do no wrong when it comes to me. She could murder my family and I'd still worship her. ;)

sora: ROFL at that huge list....I love Ringo Shiina though...her vocals are beautiful, but I can understand that not everyone can like them.

I say Lady Gaga...Poker Face; excellent music, hate her vocals. O_O

nemesisyume 19th June 2009 12:40 PM

oh and nana kitade! love her music but her voice is soo annoying :laugh

sora2522 20th June 2009 06:13 AM

everyone: if you're confused, THOSE ARE ALL PEOPLE I LISTEN TO. REGARDLESS. except for KOTOKO. i just have 2 of her singles. you can pretty much agree on most of those statements though, right? :P

I hate Miley Cyrus! Lol, sorry. :P
But "The Climb" kind of captured my heart, but her voice completely ruined it in my opinion..
Also, Rihanna, not as bad as Miley Cyrus though. Not that I'm against a country voice, but almost every note she tries to hit, she misses..
Does 4Minute count? Some of their vocalists are REALLY bad, I honestly think GaYoon is the only decent voice though.. OH Hyuna! The most annoying of all T__T... Her voice just makes me feel so annoyed, but I love CHANGE! :D

Polyrhythm 14th March 2010 09:20 AM

agreed on Ayumi Hamasaki

prussian blue 14th March 2010 09:24 AM

I never been a fans of ami suzuli's voice, how could Japanese people vote for her in the singing competition? I seriously won't vote for her. Fortunately, people composed great songs for her.

But thanks to nakata yasutaka who vocodered her voice and it turns out to be so great and easier to listen. Delightful was cracked up sometimes in lives, Lalalalarrrgggh LALA!

y_nathz 14th March 2010 09:47 AM

4Minute and some other K-Pop bands
I don't really think they can sing but K-Pop songs are too addictive :heart

pepper 14th March 2010 04:33 PM

All these girls from HELLO! project... Morning Musume, etc. I love their chessy music, but some of their vocals makes me mad. For example i just download HANGRY&ANGRY album, listened to it and got thought "grrr, shut up! let me listen to music." :D

ストロボ・EdGE 19th March 2010 08:23 PM

The indie band Mew. I hate his vocals so bad... but the music is so good.

Hikaru Utada....... I don't know why people think her voice is something spectacular, I don't like it, it's annoying sometimes specially in lives

TITANIC 20th March 2010 01:21 AM

I hate Tohoshinki's voice but their musics are really great,,
I think they have the most disturbing voice ever. they are not singing but more about screaming and I really hate that.

i just noticed he finally got his first pv (its actually pretty decent sounding). but not for this song. XD

i think being that some of my first few fav artists have not so special voices i really dont mind vocies much. or at least i definitely dont hate them

like Miku from An Cafe has a weird voice. epsecially noticeble in the song Odoru Meruhen Tokei (classic) . . . .

and that one guy whos name escapes me from the band Paradies. a few of Indie V-kei bands vocalists have not so amazing voices. . . but unique

@emiko: i'm curious to hear marino's music. i can't really find them on youtube. do you have any links?

I dont :( I'm sorry, I don't even really know anything about her. I just happened across her album at kmc i think...

I might be able to upload it for you...but I'm having internet issues....

her last fm page is here...looks like there's like one or two vids...her voice isn't TOO bad if you're used to that kind of music...but it's very hard for me to stand...I can't even stand Perfume...so yeah...looks like she's a Nakata Yasutaka act lol Interesting.

A lot.
Ayumi old songs for example... songs that her voice is...irritant to my ears! like And then... or kanariya.
But now, I her voice is great.
