Japanese Jazz

Does anyone listen to Japanese jazz? Or know any japanese jazz artist? I'm so angry, I listened to this beautiful jazz sounding like jpop song that was sung by a girl and a guy and I didn't get the name of the song but it was so classy and beautiful... *sigh* I hate it when I hear a good song and can't ge tthe name. Anyway, I thought this would make an insteresting topic... hopefully o.o :P lol

Amrai-chan 19th May 2009 06:14 AM

I do. My favorite artists at the moment are Hiromi and Keiko Matsui. United Future Organization is pretty good too.

rookies 19th May 2009 06:36 AM

I've heard of a group called Jazztronik (spelling?) , but I have no idea if
their genre is Jazz or not.

ImpactBreaker 19th May 2009 06:46 AM

I listen to the Japanese Jazz Queen (to me). Yeah, Mika Nakashima! Shiina ringo has some pretty good jazz songs too. :yes

sora-kara 20th May 2009 12:07 AM

Amrai-chan!
Keiko Matsui is awesome! I've never known anyone else who listens to her!

My other favourite Japanese Jazz is Orange Pekoe (but its usually just the girl singing), and of course The Seatbelts :P

Amrai-chan 20th May 2009 01:21 AM

Awesome! :hi5 What's your favorite album?

At the moment mine is Whisper From The Mirror. She has so many it's hard to choose absolute favorites.

Orange Pekole is pretty good. I've only heard a few of thier songs. The Seatbelts are great but then I usally think that about anything Yoko Kanno is involved in. lol.

KarenPang 20th May 2009 02:06 AM

I don't know if you count Mika Nakashima & Ken Hirai as Jazz artistes

but if so , they're good

rookies 20th May 2009 02:35 AM

I like hiro's (from SPEED) first Cocco D'or album, which was covers of english songs.

And also, bird has some nice jazz songs; her songs cover a lot of different genres, I've heard some songs of hers that are jazz. ^^

bird got married recently, as I read in a tokyograph article. Link

It's been a while since I listed to bird's albums, but I think the last one I listened to was "bird's nest". :o

Anyone else heard of bird before, or listened to her songs?

bulmasman 21st May 2009 12:37 AM

Lee^ChaN 21st May 2009 12:03 PM

Yeah. Right now all I own is Moyo. Every time I think to buy another album something else comes up >_<

Yeah, I'm going to. :) any recomendations as far as songs go? A new album? I'll keep an eye out for it then. :)

zyoeru 27th May 2009 08:33 AM

Someone else mentioned Shiina Ringo, but I'd like to reinforce this: Ringo has some fantastic swing/jazz songs, I'll recommend some later. ;)

I like bird also. ^^

But I just thought her artist name was funny when I first found out about her, hehe. xD

prussian blue 27th May 2009 08:54 AM

emi fujita and ken hirai had been covering couples of jazz tracks too!

MISIA consider as jazz artist too? i only heard COLOR OF LIFE which sounds jazzy, any other jazz track from her?

zyoeru 27th May 2009 09:00 AM

Just to add...how many of you would consider ENKA to be jazzy? :s

Amrai-chan 27th May 2009 10:29 AM

It reminds me of Jazz at some points. Blues too. Mostly stuff from Meiko Kaji.

Anyone here a fan of Lisa Ono (小野リサ?) She's on the Bossa Nova side...but still. I love her voice.

Apparently she's singing with Ken Hirai on the song Heart of Mine from the album Ken's Bar II.

kinda to a certain extent

some of Kanjani8's material sound a bit jazzy too even though their main staple's enka

haha thats always the way eh?
older releases just keep getting pushed back on the 'to buy list'. i do it all the time :P

ooh, good orange pekoe songs:
sora no niwa
yawaraka na yoru
happy valley
gokurakucho~bird of paradise~
honeysuckle
joyful world
kirakira

most of their singles are actually pretty great come to think of it....

if youd wanna go just straight for an album, id suggest organic plastic music right away. its fantastic.
but all of their albums have something good to offer.
if you want me to share anything, just let me know. :) i have most of their albums.

JackieRos 29th May 2009 03:04 AM

when i saw Japanese Jazz I immediately thought of Shiina ringo
I love her Shouso Strip and Utaite Myouri ~Sono Ichi~ albums

stickyrice 29th May 2009 03:14 AM

I believe no one mentioned Paris Match. Definitely check them out. They're amazing and again, Orange Pekoe as well.

hitori 30th May 2009 07:53 PM

japanese jazz = Mika Nakashima!
recommended songs :
-Love Addict
-aroma
-SEVEN
-Rocking horse
-FEVER
-YOU'D BE SO NICE TO COME HOME TO
-WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD

though for me, she excels in singing soul/gospel & reggae a little bit more.. her jazz songs are always welcomed

sora-kara 7th June 2009 09:16 PM

im not sure why everyone thinks shiina ringo is jazz.

i have two of her albums, and while they have jazzy moments, i would never suggest her to a jazz enthusiast.

in other news, orange pekoe has a new album coming out this month! :D

Amrai-chan 20th June 2009 05:19 AM

Bumpimg up...

Orange Pekoe's new album comes out on the 26th yes?

sora-kara 20th June 2009 10:12 PM

it got moved back actually. now its coming out on the 8th of july.

agashi 20th June 2009 11:31 PM

Deibel 24th July 2010 07:17 PM

Hey guys, I'm getting crazy @_@

I'm not able to find NOTHING of United Future Organization (I only find stuff from a band called "UFO" (but they haven't nothing to do with United Future Organization)), nor BIRD (google can't understand me when I tell him that is a japanese band of jazz and not a kind of japanese bird what I'm looking for xD), but I'm eager to listen new things of japanese jazz -____-

So...

Spoiler:
I invoke you, person who knows where I can find that!!!! xDD

hattori_hanzo 27th July 2010 11:09 AM

Oh, don't worry! Thank you anyway for replying! ^__^
I'm gonna look for her =D

hsienko 28th July 2010 02:27 AM

YMCK is jazz like. Like they're 8-bit electronic but the melodies they use and their lyrics definately have a jazz flavor to them.

Just a suggestion

:D

She's got a fair amount of jazzy songs / re-arrangements (especially on Heisei Fuuzoku).
