TOKYO (AFP) – Japanese police Wednesday raided the office of the agent of pop superstar Ayumi Hamasaki after a promotional event in April drew 8,000 screaming fans and stopped traffic in central Tokyo.

Police raided the offices of agent Avex Entertainment Inc., over the event that was allegedly held without a permit in Tokyo's fashionable Shibuya district.

Shrieking crowds massed around Hamasaki, 30, when she appeared for several minutes to promote her new book at the teenage fashion temple Shibuya 109, a shopping centre that is a magnet for teenage girls.

Police are reportedly investigating the incident as a possible violation of the road traffic law, but they declined to comment, as did Avex staff.

Hamasaki, known to her fans simply as 'Ayu,' enjoys intense adoration as a pop diva and fashion icon among girls and young women in Japan and elsewhere across East Asia, including Taiwan and China.

Organizers of a street event featuring Japanese pop superstar Ayumi Hamasaki have come under suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Law by holding the event without a license, it has emerged.

The Metropolitan Police Department searched the offices of Hamasaki's management agency Avex Entertainment and several other locations in connection with an investigation Wednesday. Police are planning to send documents on involved parties to public prosecutors, accusing them of violating the law.

According to police, Hamasaki held an event at 109 Square in front of the 109 department store in Tokyo's Shibuya district at around 3 p.m. April 7. The event, held to promote a new book about the star, was an unannounced "surprise event," and the square was soon flooded with some 8,000 onlookers. The crowd overflowed the boundaries of the square with some ending up on the surrounding streets, causing traffic mayhem at the major junction.

zyoeru 10th June 2009 02:45 PM

The only crime here is using that ugly photo.

A RAID? Sounds way more important than it actually is. :P

koumori 10th June 2009 02:45 PM

Ohemgeee >__<

Oh dear... what's happening??? :(

Hmm... this scandal just never ends...

And a raid? Lmao, yeah okay, avex is hiding drugs and Ayu just raped a woman. :innocent

koumori 10th June 2009 03:05 PM

^ Ohemgee, really?! D': HOW COULD YOU AYUMI?!?! -die-

LOLL~

PinkShinigami 10th June 2009 03:07 PM

I thought they had stopped this? >.<

~ayu-cake~ 10th June 2009 03:08 PM

Guys, the picture could be hella' worse.

A raid?
:S
A raid for what? :S

tokyoxjapanxfan 10th June 2009 03:19 PM

honestly this doesn't really affect ayu, they just use her name to get the notice. i mean it affects her staff, but not her. she doesn't organize those events :P

but i literally just saw this on the news hahaha

extepan 10th June 2009 03:29 PM

ahhh that photo looks bad!

Neferet 10th June 2009 03:49 PM

Aahh... still with this? -__-
And that pic? OMG They could have used another one!

njanjayrp 10th June 2009 03:56 PM

This is old news. Why posting this again every few weeks?

Blasterion 10th June 2009 04:00 PM

lol yeah absolutely..they should have used a better pic!

and Avex should actually have went and got a license, but now they're stuck in this mess :D

keikeiaznqueen 10th June 2009 04:08 PM

lol, I love how they throw in Ayu's name as much as they could to get the publicity for this article that they need. :P Geez, the media can't get more obvious.

And honestly, using the word "raid" is such a word choice... it misleads the reader so bad. Haha...

polka-dot-jewel 10th June 2009 04:11 PM

Wow it's on the US Yahoo News o______o

Well they can't prosecute Ayu - she didn't know they didn't have a permit, and honestly, the police SHOULDN'T be surprised so many people showed up. If they can't find a permit, some bad things could happen to Max and some other people DX

Hachimitsu 10th June 2009 04:12 PM

Why do they use such an old picture from a Panasonic promotion? It's completely unrelated..

polka-dot-jewel 10th June 2009 04:22 PM

^ They always use old pictures. I remember with the announcement of her being deaf in her left ear, they would use pictures from the Panasonic press conference in 2006.

AyuGAME 10th June 2009 04:32 PM

another news about that?! looks like its not ended yet

aloopy 10th June 2009 04:35 PM

ew this is still going on?
the police needs to get over themselves omg!

truehappiness 10th June 2009 04:37 PM

Sounds like someone was late to the party.. haha.

elvesword 10th June 2009 04:41 PM

They just like one of the newspaper in Taiwan, always chose the worst pics of AYU to make fun of her>"<
Thanks for the news anyway, though I think the Tokyo police had done too far, they can't just investigate other serious cases?!

Neko★munication 10th June 2009 04:57 PM

Haha... Oh Ayu, what a criminal you are. :roflmao

stef_gal 10th June 2009 05:04 PM

OMG!!!
can't they just use the recent ones...

And discussing the gross factor of the photo is more constructive than this old and misinformed news~

Double this. .___. Sometimes the fans make me sad.

jbrat2219 10th June 2009 06:59 PM

LOL She looks like a normal person in the picture, that occasionally happens you know xD; Nothing will beat that one candid shot of her overseas! She was unrecognizable...

GRACE 10th June 2009 07:59 PM

Isn't this a little... arbitrary to be receiving such scrutiny...? There have to be better things the Japanese police could be doing then trying to charge a pop star with a traffic violation...

rakeru 10th June 2009 08:57 PM

i love how the police are "raiding" Ayu's avex office and people are mostly concerned with the fact that Yahoo used a comparatively unattractive picture of her.

LOL so true

Embleu 10th June 2009 10:43 PM

Here in California, the police have been really alert, springing tickets on the littlest traffic violations in order to bring in revenue for the state since voters approved a budget reform/cut/whatever (not sure of the term, don't like politics :P) a while ago. Maybe the Tokyo police are in the same situation or something?

I really hope this doesn't create negative publicity for Ayu, though.

mcluva420 10th June 2009 11:00 PM

^probably.. the government needs money!

Larisa-chan 10th June 2009 11:09 PM

Whatever, it's not like she was wandering the streets of Tokyo drunk and nude. ;)

Ayu_no_tenshi 10th June 2009 11:09 PM

a raid...? wtf!

taskinillusion 10th June 2009 11:39 PM

Why do they have to "raid" the office like they're trafficking drugs or something, geez.

jimex289 10th June 2009 11:43 PM

I think we should all calm down and look it at logically. By raid I'm pretty sure they don't mean the special police forces came with guns blazing, door rams, shields, and w/e else they might use to raid the place of a criminal (flashbangs and tear gas perhaps?).

The way this article is "sensationally written" is the problem. I'm sure the police arrived at the agency and requested a search for material or documents (or lack thereof) that would incriminate her violation of the law that day. It makes perfect sense why'd they take this route in their investigation but I still think they are over reacting "just a little" over a traffic violation. Somewhere deep inside I feel that if this person who violated the law didn't go by the name of "Ayumi Hamasaki", they wouldn't be this darn serious about going after that person. Perhaps the legal system sees this as a good opportunity to "set an example" and show how "diligent" it is in bringing wrongdoers to "justice".

One last thing: I think that picture looks very sexy. I can't look at it for more than 5 seconds without having my hormones act up.

ImpactBreaker 10th June 2009 11:44 PM

LOL people...don't be too naive :laugh There's a reason why they chose a bad picture, and there's really not much to wonder "why". That's a tricky resource in journalism. When you want to bring some news into a negative light, specially to those involved in the bad news, they try to put pictures as raw and unproduced as possible, so that it might cause some "anger" towards the "criminals" for those reading the news. When a politician is involved in huge scandals here in Brazil, they put his picture in the main page of the most famous news magazines, with his face asll sweaty and all pores visible so that it will cause a disgusting feeling for those reading. When they want to bring a news that a woman is incredible beautiful, they photoshop her to have crystal clear skin and amke an excellent job on the make up so that they can really sell what they're implying.

truehappiness 10th June 2009 11:48 PM

Seems like 'raid' was supposed to be like 'gang up on' instead.. haha.

teamMessAge 10th June 2009 11:48 PM

Hmm...raid sounds strange. Maybe it was a translation error or something? Unlikely, but maybe. And I think that's a cute picture of Ayu.

This might be a scandal, but at least it isn't about women's amniotic fluid rotting at 35!

Hahahaha do I have bad tastes? Based on what you just wrote about putting a person into the most negative light possible, you'd think they choose a more grotesque picture of her lolol. I mean she could definitely look better but it's not the absolute worse I've seen of her heh.

Also, not only that but the way they write the article to make it seem worse than it really is with the clear intent of moving copies. If I'm not mistaken that's one of the main characteristics defining a tabloid. Quite unfortunate, really. I'm going to wait for some more articles to pop up and see what they have to say. Hopefully they give me pure untainted journalism.

I know, the picture might not be great, but I agree with you - it's not the worst. I'd say they don't really want to make ayu the ugliest villain with such news, though they also don't want to put her into a good light either. That picture seems to bring mixed feelings among ayu fans, what to say the casual reader who isn't that much into ayu. :laugh My example was that of an extreme case though so that people could get the picture. It's just like when you advertise a product there's a whole "science" behind the advertisement so that people will feel attracted to the product and favor it over adversary companies products LOL

Who's to say they aren't already doing the better things out there? Just because ayu is a celebrity and avex is a rich record comapny doesn't mean the law shouldn't be enforced towards them. It actually makes me glad to see that in Japan they aren't all sweety when it comes to celebrities. If anyone's to blame, maybe it's the media that is blowing this out of proportion. You can't blame the police for doing their jobs. In my country it gets to the point that media lick celbrities so much that they give special time in TV shows so that the celbrities can defend themselves and they even try to clean their images, and osmetimes they've made some pretty foul crimes like driving drunk and hitiing and killing people while driving. And then people go: [ "aww" poor him is suffering because of the law, now his image is tarnished]. To the hell with hypocrisy! ayu is not to blame for this incident but saying this should just be overlooked is a little too much. They have already decided that something illegal happened in that event, so nothing fairer than doing a close investigation on the matter. Putting this to rest would be an offense to japan's citizen's who pays taxes to have their rights assured. it's pretty annoying that media puts a lot od sensasionalism over this, but then, that's not the police fault.

Bad Wolf 11th June 2009 03:33 AM

I think the reason people, myself included, are saying this is a waste of time or this is getting out of hand is because it's already been established that they didn't have a permit. Doing a raid proves nothing but dragging Avex, Ayu's staff and Ayu herself through the mud. It seems like the police or treating them as nothing more than scapegoats just to "make an example" of them, which I think is a bit ridiculous... Of course they have to do their job, so I guess a lot of the blame for this blow up is the media. Nothing new there.

I don't like celebrity preferential treatment any more than the next (sensible) person, but I don't think that applies here. Ayu didn't do something illegal herself--she just showed up. It was up to the staff or the management to get the proper papers in order, and they didn't. So it's not like she got away with something like, say, public drunkenness or running around without clothes, if you catch my drift *coughSMAPguycough*.

Of course, anything for the ratings~

IYFreak 11th June 2009 04:07 AM

The police is not going to avex building to "prove" that what they did is illegal. They are going there to investigate. They have to. They have to know what went wrong. That's an important step that can't be jumped. People assume it's a waste of time because they don't really take the time to think why the police did this. It was not "to prove further that avex is at wrong", it is to reach a conclusion in what, where and why did it went wrong, which is a completely different thing. The media is the one making this a huge deal, and then people assume it's the police that is making mud out of this. Again, they are doing their job, and they should never be negligent of it just because it is causing the media to tarnish ayu's beauty. They shouldn't neglect something of public interest in favor of a celebrity. If you guys are to whine about something, it should be about ayu's PR team incompetence. If they had been careful and followed the rules, ayu wouldn't have been in this situation. Compalining that the police shopuldn't be doing their jobs is a little ridiculous. It's like saying physicians should neglect assistance to someone dying in an ER. Someone broke the laws and the issue has to investigated, and this is what they are doing, and it doesn't matter if there are other major laws that have been broken, if they have been assigned to investigate this specifically, they have to folllow their duties, otherwise such laws shouldn't even exist, if they can't be enforced.

The police didn't go to avex building to bust ayu. They went there to investigate avex. Even you are assuming that ayu's amnagement did something wrong, so why are you also defending that the police is doing too much in investigating? They've done something wrong, and the police went there to take clues. Fair enough. The media takes this and portrays it into a negative light over ayu - That's not the police fault. They are doing their jobs investigating an irregularity at avex. If there's anyone to blame here is ayu's team responsible for getting these permissions, because they were incompetent and are now causing this to happen and the emdia for making such a big thing out of nothing. Thep olice should go on and do their jobs, people like it or not :yes

You guys have to be careful with things you read. This article makes things look worse than they seem and they use terms that cause a little shock, making people to go too dramatic over this matter.

Exactly, that's what pisses me off about this :irked. They're making this bigger than what it really is. Jeez, Ayu didn't kill anyone or smuggle illegal items into Avex. Just move along already, no one was hurt or anything.

Bad Wolf 11th June 2009 04:33 AM

Because I think it sounds stupid to say omg it's a raid~ two months after the damn fact that the crime happened (though obviously these things take time). I already said that I know they have to do their jobs, AND that the blame lies on how the media is blowing it out of proportion, but I also wonder if the cops are being as thorough in their investigation of other crimes that surround celebrities--especially if they're actually done by the celebrity his/herself. I wouldn't have a problem with their thoroughness on this matter if I knew they were doing the same thing to other artists who mess up (or whose people mess up).

I also just don't like cops in general lol. I have a bias showing.

asmAyumi1992 11th June 2009 04:57 AM

Ayu is innocent for this. I love that photo although looks old. It's her natural expressions!

Tony G 11th June 2009 06:01 AM

I have a feeling the police are putting so much effort into this just because of Ayu's status. Come on, raiding an office over a road traffic violation? Give her a fine, drag her to court, whatever, just be done with it. Looks like they're looking for evidence to charge Avex with something criminal. Even if it's clear they didn't have a permit, the more evidence the better.

BluishDays 11th June 2009 06:37 AM

jeez are they still up in arms over this traffic violation ; ; poor ayu she doesn't need this type of stress. lol can you imagine? You can't travel anywhere without setting it up first with the police and getting proper permit. So that means she can't just wake up and decide to shop for shoes one day without alerting police and getting a permit because Ayu will draw crowds if she decides to just go out

Calico 11th June 2009 07:18 AM

I saw this on NHK news last night and had no idea what was going on (just that I wishing I was in Shibuya that day lol) so I came here to read about it. A raid seems unnecessary, but I doubt it was as harsh as the papers are making it sound.

[taskin.ayu] 11th June 2009 07:20 AM

Why did they need to RAID avex? LOLLL It's not like they were hidng bombs. XD

chloeM 11th June 2009 09:15 AM

they are not done with this arent they?

SunshineSlayer 12th June 2009 06:50 AM

I leave for a few days and then there is finally some news? It seems to me that the police wanted an excuse to raid (maybe some other thing they were after and used this as a way in.) Doesn't make sense that they would do this so much after the event otherwise. As for this being a "surprise" event - seemed like a totally planned PR event to me, including Ayu "accidently" leaking the news the night before.

Police on Thursday sent prosecutors papers on three companies and 11 employees that organized an outdoor event featuring pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki without permission in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward in April.

The companies, including Hamasaki's agent Avex Management Inc., are charged with violating the road traffic law in holding the 15-minute event designed to mark the publication of her book on the afternoon of April 7.

The event was held in an open space in front of the fashion emporium Shibuya 109, causing crowds to flood onto the streets.

About 3,000 people swarmed to the venue, disrupting the traffic on the streets, according to the Tokyo police.

All of the 11 employees have admitted to the charge, police said, quoting them as saying they knew they would not be able to get permission to use the road if they sought advance notice and would probably have had to cancel the event plan.

Avex had claimed it knew nothing of the situation because the other companies were tasked with organizing the event. But an investigation led Tokyo police to conclude that Avex was responsible in part for causing the trouble, according to investigative sources.

The police did not question Hamasaki herself because they thought she was not directly involved in the process of planning the event.
