French Music Discussion Thread ~Introduction~

Hey Everyone!
I just checked the forum to see if there are many threads on French music, and they all seem to have died a while ago. So, I thought I might take the liberty to re-start the discussion.
Feel free to talk about any french artist/band! The French music industry doesn't seem to be that successful globally, so I thought I might introduce some of my favourite artists/bands to you!

Firstly, my personal favourite, and a relatively popular artist on AHS:

Émilie Simon
Genre: Experimental Pop, Electronica
Studio Albums: Émilie Simon (2003), Végétal (2006), The Big Machine (later 2009)
Notable Songs: Fleur de Saison, Dame de Lotus, Désert, Flowers, Opium, Alicia
Brief Description: Firstly, I read somewhere that she is one of Kanon Wakeshima's role models!! I hear Émilie's influence more in Kanon's vocals than in her music though. Anyway, her music is hard to compare to any others', however she has been called the 'French Bjork,' but I think Émilie's much better. She sings both in French and English.

Here are some of her music videos (they're amazing! :love):
Fleur de Saison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMDunGVx7uU
Dame de Lotus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf5olM0v9-w

Secondly:

AaRON
Genre: Pop
Studio Albums: Artificial Animals Riding On Neverland (2007)
Notable Songs: Endless Song, U-Turn (Lili), Le Tunnel D'Or, Beautiful Scar
Brief Description: AaRON are not very well known, even in France. The band is comprised of Simon Buret (singer, author and composer) and Olivier Couriser (composer and arranger). They have some really beautiful songs and I would say they are most like Coldplay. They make heavy use of the piano in most of their songs. As far as I know, they sing all their songs in English, with the exception of Le Tunnel D'Or (which is my favourite). They are definitely worth a listen!

Here are some of their music videos:
Le Tunnel D'Or :love : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ALslEVwozY
U-Turn (Lili): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJRh0PlWB6g

Lastly (for now):

Yelle
Genre: Electropop
Studio Albums: POP-UP (2007)
Notable Songs: Ce Jeu, A Cause Des Garçons, Les Femmes, Je Veux Te Voir
Brief Description: Yelle's music is cheeky and fun, a lot ligher than the previous two artists/bands. If you like any of Yasutaka Nakata's acts, then give Yelle a listen! She sings almost exclusively in French.

Here are some of her music videos:
Je Veux Te Voir (the beginning is an exerpt from another song): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y99UqvgCmE8
A Cause Des Garçons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDUAnhtt1xM

Alizée
Genre: Pop, Rock, Electropop
Studio Albums: Gourmandises (2000), Mes Courants Électriques (2003), Psychédélices (2007)
Notable Songs: J'en Ai Marre, Moi Lolita..., A Quoi Rêve une Jeune Fille, Fifty Sixty, L'Alize (and many more :))
Brief Description: Alizée's first two albums were written by Mylène Farmer, and were both very popular in France and around Europe. I don't know much abour her, but she also seems to be popular thoughout AHS. From what I've heard, she's a very good artist!

Here are some of her music videos:
Moi...Lolita: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDwKPGUIVME
J'en ai marre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=240S04eCCC0

Enjoy!
Opinions and Reccommendations are very welcome! Discussion is what this thread is all about!!

No problems, I like it when people appreciate music!! Ye, Yelle's music can be a bit wierd sometimes, but her album is quite good. :D Besides, French electropop is very rare atm (at least from my experiences).

OMG I just listened to Alizee's 'Fifty Sixty' and I must say I am very impressed!! thank you! :shughug

@JackieRos - ARGH! :confused I'm not good at french-japanese music connections, but Emilie Simon's 'Dame de Lotus' ('Lotus Woman' :rolleyes) and 'Opium' are really good songs with Oriental elements.

i love the song J'en ai marre :heart

JackieRos 29th June 2009 04:52 AM

Mois dix Mois is japanese

emi♡ 29th June 2009 05:18 AM

yey I love J'en Ai Marre.

My favorites from Alizee are:

J'en Ai Marre
Moi Lolita...
L'Alize
Gourmandises
J`ai Pas Vingt Ans
Lui ou Toi
A Quoi Rêve une Jeune Fille :heart
Youpidou
Veni Vedi Vici

I just watched those Emilie Simon videos, and I love them! I just got Yelle's discography, so I'll be listening to that for the next few days, and maybe Emilie too, depending on when my download finishes.

I think I'm really liking Emilie a lot. I'm excited for her discography.

I think electropop is very rare in french music so, I think it should be interesting...French music has a very interesting sound in their respective genres, I've been looking for more for a while, but...I got lazy downloading Japanese underground stuff lol

jbrat2219 29th June 2009 05:21 AM

Hey does anyone know this french rock chick... her name was Marie... I think but I can't remember her full name...?

Andrenekoi 29th June 2009 05:57 AM

Émilie Simon ir pure love!

But I'm going to pimp my Frech diva here!

Mylène Farmer
Genre: Pop
Studio Albums: Cendres de Lune (86), Ainsi soit je... (88), L'Autre... (91), Anamorphosée (95), Innamoramento (99), Avant que l'ombre... (05), Point de Suture (08)
Notable Songs: Libertine, Sans Contrefaçon, Pourvu qu'elles soient douces, Ainsi soit je, Désenchantée, Je t'aime mélancolie, XXL, California, Rêver, Je te rends ton amour, C'est une belle journée
Brief Description: As far as I know (I'm not frech), the easier way to describe Mylène would be by saying that she is the French equivalent to Madonna: Her music videos are fantastic and meanful, her concerts are huge and considerated to be among the best, her albums sells like hot cakes and she is the artist with the most number 1 hits on France (second is Celine Dion). The singer songwriter (she wrote all her songs but some on the first album) is also known by her deep and complicated lyrics, her taste for talking about sex and death and her touch to be aways surrounded by controversies or mysteries. It's the first mainstream singer to have frontal nude scenes on MV (Libertine and Pourvu qu'elles soient douces) and had some videos banned from TV in Frace!^^ BTW, she is kind of a mentor to Alizeé, she and Laurent Boutonnat (her producer and main composer) produced Alizeé's first 2 albums and kind of trained her in order to keep her image and be a popstar!

I really like Paris Combo too, but don't know much about them

untitledforayu 29th June 2009 06:23 AM

^ ^ wow, thanks Andrenekoi!, I have to check Mylène out...
Ooh I like Libertine a lot! :)
Reccommendations like that isexactly what i wanted on this thread :yes

Oh, right, totally misunderstood! Umm...correct me if I'm wrong, but judging from your profile you're a rock fan? I'm no expert on anything harder than Green Day lol, but my friend likes J-Rock bands like Dir en Grey and the gazette too and he liked this French band called Gojira for a while.

Indochine are a well known and long-living rock band, I've listened to a couple of their songs, but they're not really my thing, though they seem quite popular. Also, the BB Brunes were quite big when I was last in France. They're a bit softer but their song 'Dis-Moi' is pretty good.

Andrenekoi 29th June 2009 07:04 AM

My favorite videos from Mylene:

Comme j'ai mal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hex3HV5s97Y
Je te rends ton amour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPBzfo9sj1Q
C'est une belle journée: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yY0OY0LbjeU
L'amour n'est rien: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck4idxiac44

Je te rends ton amour is a litte... x-rated... with some controversial scenes (this one was banned from French tv). So, if someone here has problems with this kind of stuff... well, it's warned!

Handjan 29th June 2009 08:00 AM

Ho! I'm really surprised, many people know Mylène Farmer O____O
She's not as popular as she was before!
It's funny to see a french music board ^____^

Well... more than 20 years career... it would be strange if she was! hahaha xD
What was her last big hit? I'm aways with this kind of curiosity but don't know where to find this kind of information :P

kilia22 30th June 2009 01:28 PM

^ Right ^^
Last big hit I would say maybe 'F *c k them all' or 'Déshabillez-moi (Live)'
But her concerts are more amazing than her singles I think. Have you ever watch her in live ?

Some of her songs have always been famous here like 'Libertine' or 'Désenchantée' and some others

sorry for my english, would be easier in French :p

Andrenekoi 1st July 2009 12:56 AM

Vanessa's Joe le taxi was covered by a brazilian "singer"... I alread listened to her, but didn't like it^^'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J53eh...eature=related

I listened a little to Coralie Clement too, but I think that her sound is not "poppish" enough to me^^

edit: woah! Zazie really sounds good!

I love Vanessa Paradis!! I bought Divinidylle for my auntie (mais un peu pour moi aussi :P) as a present from france, because she loves 'joe le taxi,' but no one knows where it is anymore. :( "Dès que je te vois" is such a good pop song! I haven't heard it in years, but i still have "Dès que je te vois, je sais que c'est toi, je sais que c'est toi" stuck in my head sometimes....

Here's the video if anyone wants to have a listen:

Oh, she's also Johnny Depp's wife, if that interests anyone :P:P

aah, i love Alizee too! especially J'ai Pas Vingt Ans. but more than that, i love... *drumroll*....

Gregory Lemarchal!
He won the 4th season of Star Academy and released an album, Je Deviens Moi, before he died of cystic fibrosis on April 30, 2007. A posthumous album was released, La Voix d'un Ange with live performances and and unreleased original song. He was noted for being the first male winner of Star Academy, and having won by the largest margin (80%) to date. Famous songs include: Meme Si -What you're made of- (ft. Lucie Sylvas), Ecris L'Histoire, A Corps Perdue, and Je Suis En Vie. He really has an amazing voice and a great style, so check him out!

De Temps en Temps, a compilation video created by Gregory's label in his honor.

untitledforayu 1st July 2009 06:55 AM

^^ Thanks rakeru! Gregory Lemarchal's music isn't really what i'm into normally, but it's pretty good nonetheless. Star Academy has a habit of producing better-than-expected artists :). Reccommend some more songs/ music videos!...if you want :yes

Haha, Alizee seems to be very popular on AHS! I don't really know alot about her, but she seems to have great music from what i've heard. Umm...I'll write something up and add it to the first post soon! :D

edit: Added Alizée's profile! :)

kendelle 1st July 2009 08:52 AM

I've never listened to French music before....thanks for making this thread, I'll start from the top and work my way through all of these xDD

blackmage 11th July 2009 05:40 AM

I'm surprised people here know Mylene Farmer, she is the best! I've known people that even listen to French music and have no idea who she is which is so surprising since she's extremely popular. haha I listen to her the most.

I also LOVE LOVE Emilie Simon! I saw her in concert July 03 and I got to meet her, I've never been star stuck before till I met her, she is so tiny and sweet and so pretty in person. I can't wait for new album coming out in September though she said its to be released in France only at that time, I'll still get my grubby hands on it. She performed a lot of material off that album, its going to be GREAT!

Not sure if anyone knows these artists, but they are worth checking out, I like their music alot. First there is Gregoire, mmmhmmm handsome man! I suggest listening to 'Ta Main', 'Toi + Moi' and 'Rien a Voir'. Those are my favorites of his.

Sheryfa Luna, I love her voice. 'Si Tu N'Etais Plus Là' is my absolute favorite song of hers. Just check her out, I highly recommend.

Emily Loizeau has some songs I like, I haven't heard most of her work, but what I have heard, makes me really want to hear the rest, she sounds great. 'Je Suis Jalouse', 'Sister' and 'Comment Dire'.

Oh, before I forget, if you want something more on the rockish side, Plastiscines are enjoyible. I have their first album, I don't think any of the songs are past three minutes, but they're catchy songs. 'Mister Driver', 'No Way' and 'Loser' are good. Most their songs are in English from the debut album.

emi♡ 26th August 2009 09:37 AM

hey you guys, I was wondering, do they release singles in france?

I was looking for some Alizee instrumentals~ Or maybe like vinyls?

untitledforayu 26th August 2009 01:29 PM

hey emiko :)
yes, they certainly do release singles in France, in much the same way as they are released in the US and UK.
Mylene Farmer's singles fequently feature intrumentals, but Alizee's singles only have remixes on them with the exeption of J'en ai marre, L'alize, Parler tout bas and Gourmandises.
I don't know how easy it is to find the singles online though, I've never tried :|
Well, I hope that helped! :)

EDIT: Happy Birthday, emiko!

@ blackmage: omg , I didn't see your post before! It must have been amazing meeting Emilie!!! I've only heard the instrumental of Chinatown on her website and it sounds amazing :luv2

We release singles in France, but it's pretty rare that there are instrumentals on it ^^
Singles in here it's not like in Japan in some beautiful package and billions of editions, it's just a CD in a cardboard folder XD

Anyway I didn't even know that there was a French Music Thread in here!
Alizee is well known in here it seems (not anymore in France BTW XD)
Mylene Farmer is not as popular as she used to be but she still has a large fanbase in France, her best songs were during the 90's IMO, I don't like at all her songs since "Avant que l'ombre"

For singles, I don't know if you ever been to amazon.fr? It's of course in French but with google translation it should be ok, I don't know about postage fees to your country though
Or try ebay ^^
If you don't want to buy, try KMC, sometimes some members put French things in there

:laugh You're the first person to mention AaRON on this thread! Le Tunnel D'Or is soo beautiful! Carla Bruni is great too, but I've only heard a couple of her songs. Raphael is probably my faviourite song from her. I haven't heard of Iris Jenkins or Dominique A before, but I just listened to a couple of Dominique A's songs and they're great :D Thanks!

Previews have been released for every track on 'The Big Machine.'
I think the entire album is in English, which I don't like, but hey, it's Émilie and it doesn't sound too bad!

Enjoy, francophiles:
