Ayu's biggest hits?
 

I would like to know which songs are considered some of Ayu's biggest hits (in Japan, not at AHS). Like the songs that more Japanese people would be able to identify?

I have an idea of which ones are, but I'm not completely sure. Like I remember reading once someone saying Startin' got a lot of radio play, but I don't really know if it was a "hit" or not.

Hmmm, her highest selling single is 'A', but because it's a maxi-single, I suppose you'd have to divide those sales by 3. :P

Her next highest selling single is SEASONS. I suppose you can call SEASONS her biggest hit. It was huuuuuuuge in Japan and a large amount of young people identified with the lyrics.

After that it's M, and then Evolution. :) Dearest, Voyage, and No Way To Say were also pretty popular, considering they won the Japan music award. Ayu is the only one to do that for 3 years consecutively I think.

Due to sales, popularity & recognition, I think: Boys & Girls, SEASONS, SURREAL, M, evolution, Dearest and Voyage

^ You're right. I missed out SURREAL and Boys & Girls! I also think Endless Sorrow is very well-loved in Japan, but probably not as much as SEASONS or Boys & Girls.

BLUE BIRD is Ayu's latest huge hit according to sales though. It could be Days but at the same time it's not the same I think. :/

I think Ayumi27 has it pretty much nailed. It's kind of a loaded question, but really what you have to do is look at what sold the best for the time, and look at what she still plays at a-nation and in concert, & you pretty much know what the big hits are. But yeah, that list just about does it.

Seasons, M, Boys and Girls, Evolution, and Dearest. Those are definitely the main, most identifiable ones for the average Japanese person.

If you were to ask people in Japan what Ayu's biggest hits are, they definitely answer SEASONS. Dearest, Voyage and M have loads of respect aswell

There was a poll about her most popular songs made by a radio on Japan last year on the 10th anniversary hype... M was the chosen, if I'm not wrong... *searching*

To commemorate Ayu's tenth anniversary, Oricon held a poll for respondents to pick their favorite Ayu song, and M came in first place. The other ones on the list were kind of expected, but I was a bit surprised to see To Be.

Agreed. For later songs I'd say BLUE BIRD is the biggest one along with STEP you. However, none of them reach the popularity the above mentioned songs.

A Song for XX, LOVE~Destiny~, SEASONS, SURREAL, Boys & Girls, Who..., M, evolution, Free & Easy, Dearest, Voyage...maybe some more too~.

Hmm, according to my female Japanese friends, songs that are well known are probably M, Voyage, Dearest. Appears also well liked and remembered.

I'm glad that Voyage is considered to be one of her biggest hits because it's so good. It's one of the first Ayu songs I heard somewhere in 2005 or 2006, I'm not sure anymore. :)

I also think that the songs she usually sings on her concerts (Boys & Girls and others) are also her hits. I also think that No way to say and A Song for xx are hits since Ayu seems to sing the latter quite a lot imo (which is good since I love the song personally a lot).

Are you forgetting who...? It's one of her most reconogize songs from her and people love it!

Days. One of the most recent hits. But it can never beat classics like M, Dearest, SEASONS, evolution and Boys & Girls.

At the moment in Japan Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ is very popular.

On iTunes (Japan) it's #1, whereas Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ is #8. And the mashup's at #72.

And the singleSunrise/Sunset~LOVE is ALL~ is at #8

^You can't compare t2m and sr numbers... sr is far from being a huge hit, but was released on the economic crisis period... while t2m just floped... (but considering overall sales, I'm pretty sure it didn't flop as hard as forgiveness or bold & delicious)

D/G wasn't released when the recession was at it's worst, and R/S had stronger tie-ins, one more version and first press gifts...

Butterfly is a song often credited as Ayu's but is in fact a smile.dk song. Even a lyrics site dedicated to J-pop had them up until I mentioned it in the forums...

And EGG was once a rumoured song which is just too funny-a-title to ever be forgotten. T_T
