A question for people who listen to music everyday...
Are you afraid of losing or damaging your hearing at all?
I'm the type of person who HAS to listen to music every day, or else I'd go mad. And I always set my iphone/ipod to the volume that I'm comfortable with (which means the volume is not too loud but neither too silent). But still, I tend to listen to music for a long period of time. No matter if it's just one or two hours respectively, or while sitting in front of my laptop for 4-5 hours. And I'm worried about my hearing like hell. Even if I'm only 16, I'm so afraid of losing it. That's why I set some limits to myself, but I often break them. It feels like an addiction that you cannot break from and as a result it damages you. Sometimes when I listen to music I can feel pain in my ears, and that's immediately where I turn off my iphone. But I'm still so worried, if I continue like this, what will my hearing be like in few years from now? Will I be deaf at 30, or even younger? Hell, you can take away my eyes, legs, arms, any part of my body, but please just NOT my hearing! And also, I go to this crazy school where we have to go every week and work in a VERY LOUD factory without any ear protection and it's really bothering me. And while I'm there working for 6 hours I listen to my ipod non-stop on a very high volume because otherwise I wouldn't be able to hear the song at all. Which is even worse. (now you tell me that we have passed through the time of slavery :/ But that's another story...) I wanted to know what do you guys think and is anyone having the same problem as me? Sorry if something like this has been already discussed, but I'd like to open the discussion again. |
im not afraid cos idk if its me obsessed with ayu but
i want to lose hearing on my left ear just like her im partiatly deaf in one ear so i always hear my music at full volume but even that i still want to turn up the volume more than my ipod will allow is a really big problem for me but im not worried and i really dont care i rather be deaf than blind im very addicted to music i know im creepy but thats me creepy jackie oh btw im 19 almost 20 O.O |
You don't have to worry about the amount of music you listen to, but about how loud and with what kind of speakers. If you listen to music with earphones, that's bad and will destroy your ears, headphones are better already, speakers are best: it's better when it's further from your ear. Turn down the bass a little, that's whats bad for your ears. and simply keep it at a low volume, I, for example, put a limit on my iPod at 50% volume, I NEVER go higher that way and if I'm in a too loud enviroment...I simply think of the music instead...and can't you bring your own ear protection to that factory? buy some, its worth it.
Of course, your hearing WILL suffer from the music and your work, but it will suffer way less if you do it like I described. I actually have hearing damages as well, had them already with 14, worst thing about it is: you don't notice it yourself unless you make a test...and my result was really bad(though still better than the average at that age, most people don't care for their ears before they are like...30 and can't understand a word anymore) |
I listen often. But I'm not using any headphones, earphones or anything. I'm using the loud speaker only. I don't like to much noise. So, I keep it slow and not disturbing anyone around me.

somemore hearing problems run in my family . My paternal grandpa & my dad are both deaf & so's my dad's older 2 brothers my dad's oldest brother went for surgery to correct his hearing problem & my grandpa have to rely the usage of a hearing aid to hear better & my dad being a real stubborn bull , refused to wear it from as long as I can remember , I communicate with my dad via SHOUTING & that goes for the rest of my family too My hearing problems started when I was 13 . It got worsen as time goes by because I would keep on hearing sounds regardless whether I cover or don't cover my ears & initally I thought I was going crazy til I went to seek professional help I got used to it now I suppose & my follow up ear appointment's coming up soon when I listen to music using my earphones & etc , I try to lower the volume because it might already worsen my hearing for all I care |
@ KarenPang
Tinnitus must be horrible...my father has it as well...and he refuses to wear a hearing aid as well xD |
My mum is actually deaf in her left ear as well like Ayu... but that's cos of a high fever.
Well, I think it's okay as long as you don't listen to music like those people who... listen using earphones and yet you can still hear the drums/whatever... O_o totally ott |
I don't have tinnitus or any other hearing disease, but my right ear is in very serious condition, ever since I went to this local concert and the speakers got messed up and they saterted giving out this reeaally high pitched noise... (my left ear wasn't affected much for some reason). Thus, when listening to my iPod or something, I don't wear the headphone on the right ear and try not to listen to too much loud music
|
@ waterballoon actually, even worse are people going to concerts without plugs, concerts nowadays are just way too loud for the human ear, one concert can decrease your hearing by 10% or more, you often hear the drums and so on of these people because the earphones simply dont close the ear properly, of course, its definitly too loud if others can hear it, but it not nearly as bad as concerts
|
i listen to music using earphones like 80% of the time
doesn't help either that i always have the music on as loud as possible... lmao. i can't help it.. and i often go to concerts and i even sleep with music on.. the louder the better for me :yes it's a bad habit and i better do something about it before it's too late |
Quote:
at most what I can do's to do things to prevent my condition from worsening |
^ no cure? when did you go? for a few years there definitly is a cure already, but its risky for people with circulation problems
|
Quote:
But I guess we should really do something about it xD. Wow, I never knew you guys had hearing problems when you were just 13 or 14... And I can only listen with my earphones because I don't have headphones (and can't wear them outside either) and can't listen on speakers because people around me would mind. And most of the time others around me can hear the music from my earphones, but if I decrease the volume to the point when no one around me can hear it, it's just too ridiculously silent. |
tinnitus is not a disease..it's an unespecific symptom that can be caused by several different ear diseases or other diseases that affects structures close to the ear/acoustic nerves. One person can feel tinnitus and have a completely different disease from another person who does.
Quote:
I used to use headphobes a lot, but I almost never use them anymore, so I'm not as much worried about losing my hearing anymore, since I'm clearly not damaging it:yes |
I listen to music through headphones like 90% of the time...and not to seem reckless, but I've been doing this for like 3 years now, as well as going to loud concerts and I'm 16 and there's no hearing loss at all, so it's all good for now. But tbh if I ever do go partially deaf I'll start being more careful.
|

at least now I know it's not a disease but rather a symptom |

i only use earphones when i work out at the gym.. an hour daily, with quite big volume :lech
I don't have problem with my hearing but I'm afraid to use them more than an hour daily; i don't wanna lose my hearing.. I tend to play loud music while I'm driving tho.. |
^ as I said before, the AMOUNT of music you listen to is not very important, but the volume, 1 hour of loud music is worse than 5 hours of medium-volume music, you can use them more, just make it more quiet! one too loud note can already destroy much
|
I've heard from lots of people that actually listening to music for a long period of time is even worse than loud music for a short period of time. But honestly IDK.
|
^ I can only repeat what hearing engineers told me
|
I think listening to loud music would be worse than listening to average volume music over a long time cos when it's loud it damages your eardrum; at least with avg vol it will be less damaging. ^^
|
^Well I guess you guys are right then. And it's better like that anyway, I guess. But it's just that I cannot enjoy music that much as I enjoy it on a louder volume. I don't know why's that.
|
^ maybe you have to get used to it? I had a peroid when I listened to louder music and the moment i started listening to it more quietly it was pretty boring the first weeks
|
^Thanks, noidea. I'll try that out. In fact, I'm listening to music really quiet now, and it feels fine if I'm concentrated on something else. but when I want to concentrate on music my hands just go to volume things up xD. But I'll try my best, lol.
|
^ Just try it for some time^^ It will get better, and even if afterwards you only listen to musik slightly quieter than before it's still an improvement^^
|
actually I`m quite sure I lost a big part of my hearing already
I tend to listen very very loudly on my earphones but i think the music makes more fun that why (and I don´t wnat to hear the other people in the bus or train!) but it is very unhealthy and I try to at least get the volume down a bit most of the time or to listen whithout earphones on my handy (when I sit alone at the busstop or so) |
Quote:
|
^ There one mail rule in life:
If it hurts something is NOT right xD |
because of my job, I'm really likely to get bad hearing when I get older... but.. who can ever live without music? When I teach classes in the gym, I turn the music SUPER loud en yell really loud in the microphone..
|
^ that actually isn't THAT bad, of course, your hearing will be under average, but probably not THAT bad unless youre holding your ear on the speaker
|
My Grandma's deaf, and Grandad absolutely SHOUTS at her he says to her
Spoiler:
Dad's getting deaf but he's nearly 60 so... |
Since little I'm like.. uhm a bat? :laugh
I can listen clearly even far or low sounds and people are like 'are you human?' LOL But I listen music everyday and during night I used headphones at OVER 9000 volume XD so I lost a bit of my superhearingpower. I have more afraid to be blind imo. |
Sometimes, yes.
I'm now trying not to use headphones at this moment. Whenever I listen to the music, I blast the volume in my headphone and it was a bad habit, I admit it... I done it everyday. But now, im not doing it. As of now, im enjoying the speakers which is "better" plus the lowering the volume while listening Hearing is like a treasure for me I don't want to lose it |
Quote:
Nah, but I'm planning on plugging my speakers in for a while. |
I wasn't worried, until I started working in a nightclub, and a few times I've stopped and wondered how much I'm damaging them >_<
|
YES! I am. I know I'm not that old and I don't have to worry about hearing loss in the immediate future, however in 30, 40, 50 years, I don't wanna lose my hearing. I listen to my iPod with earbuds at the lowest audible volume, which is typically the lowest possible volume or a little higher. Its not because I'm restricting myself. I can hear it fine. But I don't want to listen to it loud b/c I don't want to have early onset hearing loss.
|
Quote:
I used to listen to it really loud, especially on public transport and stuff and when I was walking next to a road. But then Ayumi let out that statement about her condition and suddenly there was this huge scare about iPod headphones, so I try and turn it down all the time now and use Ben's iPod speakers whenever I can xD So yes, I'm pretty worried >o<; |
Quote:
I don't actually listen to music outside much, if I'm out with friends, I'll only listen while I'm on the bus or on my own, after I meet with my friends I'll turn off my MP3. :) But I think I'm more careful actually, the music I listen to atm isn't heavy metal any more. So I don't feel the need to blast it. XD |
i always use earphones n my ears feel a lil strange after hours..
but i never think about it.. dont scared me lol ~ |
Well but... well... with the bass to your ear... it's quite orgasmic. Especially when you're listening to songs like Rule/Sparkle... it feels like the bass is so secksy you wanna make love to it. I'm not kidding lol :P
|
I'm only 17 (18 in 5 days) and the hearing in my right ear is already getting weaker from too loud music |
I guess I'm kinda nonchalant about this
I always listen to music from my PSP on my way to school, home It must be max volume whenever I listen, may be too loud for some people but it's fine for me |
I listen to music all the time, but I never listen to it too loud.
I never really thought about losing my hearing... Eventually everyone's hearing withers, though. I know some people who are surrounded by music a lot more than I am, but I try to be careful and only listen to music at a comfortable level. I figure I might as well be thankful that I have my hearing now. :) |
I agree with noidea! It's about the volume not the hours you have been listening.
I've experienced ringing in the ear and it hurts just a few weeks ago because I was so exposed to loud music. I tried to refrain myself from using earphones but I can't help it. Music is my life. I was so worried that I might end up losing my hearing. But thank God it doesn't hurt anymore. Now, I'm careful. I maximize the volume in a limited time then minimized it. You should watch it and be disciplined! After all, if we just take it for granted, we might end up like our dear Ayu...right? |
i usually will use headphone for less than 2 hours with 20% volume only for a day.
Because my ear is getting weaker when i was 20.so now,i'll only use speaker and seldom use earphone because ayu's song is on my mind 24/7...so i don't need to listen to my mp3 player anymore :p |
That's the same problem with me~
I can't feel the day without listening any music at all, But for me, i have do that things for almost 2 years, nothing bad happened~ I hear the music at 75% volume, but i don't think i have any problem with my ear after all~ |
i not scared at all but my right ear is hard at hearing but i am not worried at all ^_^
|
I've been such a stupid person. I got the stupid tinnitus or whatever it's called, that same condition Ayu has. I didn't get it on purpose. I just wanted to listen to my music has loud as possible and the result was tinnitus. And lately it has been even worse and I hate the stupid thing. It's worse on my left ear for some reason.
I have learnt to listen to my music for a couple of hours, not the whole day long and volume numbers are 50 and nothing else. I use earphones for my cellphone (volume 40-50 I'm not sure), and on computer I either use loud speakers or headphones (Volume 45-50). It's sad that the only computer we have is in living room and that means I can't use loud speakers. Lately I haven't listened to music almost at all. But I like music. It's relaxing and inspiring. <3 But anyhoo, I hate tinnitus. I regret the fact that I listened to the music so loud it broke my ears. :< I'm not sure about my right ear but I know that left ear isn't working so well anymore as it used to. But I can assure you that I'm not a hardcore Ayu fan who wants to become half deaf just like her. No offence but I just had to say this because I know some people might think I want to do that. I have ever been a hardcore Ayu fan. >:3 The one I really love is that beautiful girl on my ava and siggy~ :luv2 |
And I'm worried about my hearing like hell. Even if I'm only 16, I'm so afraid of losing it. That's why I set some limits to myself, but I often break them. It feels like an addiction that you cannot break from and as a result it damages you.
i guess music is a good form of addiction, you know. it's sane. i would like to assure you: now you know, you're a student, you have much time. when you'll start workin the time for music will be definetely less. |
no, i don't listen to music that loud. i keep it at a normal volume most of the time unless i completely want to drown something out, but that'll only be for a few songs
|
I don't listen to my music too loud.
I set my ipod's volume limit to about 50% of the whole thing, and I listen at 50% of my 50% usually... so that's 25% of the maximum volume on the ipod. Not too bad right? Although, I do use earphones, so. |
of cos i am afraid... so thats why i dont blast my eyes with max volume at noisy places. It's really no point. i rather hum the tune in my heart.. :D

I've started using speakers btw. :thumbsup |
^ good decision^^
I bought earphones that properly close my ear today, that way I can listen to music more quietly when im in the bus to my school for example |
As KarenPang's blogs called:
No Music, No Life :-D |
It's not a big deal to me.
First, when I can listen to music off my laptop (basically when I'm home) I do that. Only if I'm taking the bus, metro or at school, I would listen to music with my headphones. Second, I don't listen to music too loud. The volume is always 50% or lower. Third, I have good headphones that block sound around me so I don't have to turn the volume up. It's a good tip! ;) |
LOL!! no. It's worth it
|
FINALLY.. There's a thread like this!! :yes
I've started listening to the radio and to music, in general, since the young age of 12 (bought my first SONY Walkman back then..) and ALMOST everyday, I swear to God, I'm constantly plugged in to my earphones, listening to my Walkman, Discman, MD player, (and now) MP3/4 player.. I have SERIOUSLY lost count of the earphones that I've used over these past 12 years.. (I'm 24 now btw..) No kidding, I still wonder if I'll lose my hearing soon at the rate I'm going.. :rolleyes |
I'm not really afraid. As long as you don't turn the volume too hard (on your iPod especially) I think it's okay.
A friend of mine once told me that she read somewhere that if you listen to music for more than 30 min a day you will live longer. XD I dunno if it's true. |
Quote:
But yeah, like you I have them in my ears non-stop xD. But I guess if we stick to what people told us here, that we just shouldn't listen to music very loud, I think we'll be fine. Quote:
And I surely listen to music more than 30 min a day xD |
^ haha, my earphones record was just broken two days ago, my sennheisers died after 8 months xD it was weird, left side died first and an hour later the right side did, usually it takes some weeks for the other side to break xD(and at the same time i got a new record for shortest use: i used the ipod earphones which i never used before for less than one day, only for the time it took to buy new earphones xD)
|
^O_o that's weird for ipod earphones to happen! I had iPod earphones before myself, and it took about 6 months for them to break. But I'm really surprised with the ones I have now, I'm literally using them non-stop (and even accidentally pulling them) and it's been a year and they work perfectly.
And my brother also has Sennheisers (but they are headphones) and it has one side a bit broken since the wire is pulled out, bit we fixed it so it's fine, lol. But they are awesome! I especially love to listen to Sparkle with them, haha. |
^ the ipod ones didnt break, but I had to wait one day to buy new earphones, so i used the ipod ones on that day and bought better ones as fast as possible(the ipod ones are simply TOO HORRID in quality)
|
I was in a car the other day with my boyfriend. His Mum's boyfriend - everyone hates him u-u; - had some really bad music on...so we were listening to our iPod's and I put it up dead loud *_*;;
Then afterwards I remembered this thread and felt bad xD I hope it won't damage my ears >o<; It was a twenty minute drive... |
Quote:
Naah, the ipod ones have really good quality, at least IMO. It's just probably because you didn't get used to it. I thought the same thing after switching from sony earphones to ipod's, I was like I won't listen to this crap, but since I had no chocie I did and now I think they are 100 times better than sony's. But that's just me of course :) Quote:

Since when I start to working my 'music time' dicrease a lot. But it can be good, my ears are safe :D lol |
In Psychology we learned that the longer you hear noise the more it hurts your ears. People who live near highways (like I do) or on busy streets in cities such as people who live in an apartment normally have worse hearing. The sound of cars going by isn't very loud, but since it is constant, your ears are constantly working until the point where they start giving up.
However, if you listen to something SO loud that your eardrum bursts, that's when you're in trouble because scar tissue will develop to replace it which makes hearing harder and harder. They've actually found that constant noise might lead to earlier death :p. Buttt... I imagine that's still in testing or we'd know more about it. But it's nothing I would spend my life worrying about. I love music too and I'm not going to stop listening to it just because it's damaging my hearing (unless it's to the point where I might go deaf). |
I listen to music far too often
I listen to it through speakers as often as I can, but when I'm on the bus, or walking around, or at work (on break) I tend to listen through earphones I've had ear problems in the past, but that's more because (and this is gonna sound disgusting) I get this build-up on wax that needs clearing out every now and then. That could be due to the earphones but I dunno. |
I have very poor hearing; actually it isn't a "hearing problem" it's something in my brain, more like a comprehension problem. So because of that I'm afraid of causing damage so when I listen to music on my iPod it's low and when I go see friends' bands I wear ear plugs sometimes (you can still hear).
|
ok youre a littttle too obsessed with music. I listen to music every day. But I could live without it.
1. Try and listen to more music on your laptop than on your iphone. It's better to hear music from a distance than when its shoved down your ear. 2. Limit how much you listen to. 3. Seek counseling help if you reeeaallly can't listen to music for 24 hours. 4. What I like to do. turn your music down as low as possible but still enjoyable. and give your ears breathers. sit in silence for a few hours. sounds like madness. I know. but years from now when you're not deaf. You'll be glad. I only ever get earaches cause of the earphones. unless its skull candy. earphones are so uncomfortable in my ears. but the jelly ones are more pleasant. only time other than that I get an ear ache is when I wake up and sleep on my in a weird position or something. |
I'm not really afraid of damage...Although I'm fairly sure that my hearing may have been damaged after I went to this one concert...but I was like 12..so I don't know.
I usually keep my ipod at a constant volume, highest around 50%. I dislike when things are so loud that they become distorted or something. Really bugs me...so I usually stay below that, because I buy cheapy headphones and they can't take too much lol It's fine with me, it's loud enough to where it drowns out everything else, and the music is all I hear. I can't really live without my music either...if people aren't with me, I ALWAYS have my ipod. No matter what. |
Oh I never listen to music that loudly, when I listen to my Ipod at home, the volume bar.....you can't even see the blue because I don't even get it that loud...so maybe less than 5%?
It's because I don't really want to drown everything out...sometimes I have to listen to my phone or my parents...though I think my hearing in my left ear is worse than my right because I tend to listen with one earphone in |
^ well, that MIGHT seem that way to you because music usually is slightly louder on the right speaker, so when you listen to it with both ears it seems like the hearing on your left ear is worse
|
oh really? i didn't know the speakers were different @_@
|
Quote:
|
@pommy
yep, on the left side it usually is less loud because more instruments are on the right side(instruments in a stereo recording are usually put like they would be on stage, and on stage more stuff is on the right side mostly, like backing vocals, 1 guitar, bass, parts of drums and keyboards...) |
not really, i never have it too high. i can't stand it when people have things loud @_@.

I worry about my hearing because I listen to music as I'm sleeping, but a good general rule of thumb is moderation.....like if you're going to listen to music nonstop don't have it at a volume where you can't hear anything else...oh, and earbuds...totally not good for those ears.
But sometimes you just can't help it, like with "Evolution" or "Rule" I need to hear every sound effect in the song! :D |
why in the world would anyone say "i want to be deaf in my left ear because i'm obsessed with ayu" ?? that's really sick and it's an insult to ayu.. :no
and no, i'm not afraid of damaging my hearing. the only time i play music really loud is when i'm in my car and even then i'm not booming it. |

I listen to music only at AVLS that's a portection Sony has in every walkman right now so it doesn't (or say it's written) damage your hearing. And another cool thing, the new Sony X series has that noise cancelation thing, which really comes in handy when you travel by metro or bus so you don't have to turn the volume up there in the sky^^
|
^ actually, almost all earphones from a certain price on have noise cancelation(which you should never use when in a city(you wont hear cars!) or when driving bike or something(just a note xD) and that sony protection...surely doesnt work, the only way to protect your ears is by going down in volume and bass, that "protection" probably is a volume limiter only
|
Honestly, No. listening to music everyday is not bad for your ears, however it depends what volume you listen to the music at. If you have head phones in your ears and the music can be heard by other people around you, than I would say your music is too loud and recommend that you turn it down. If you constantly expose your ear drums to such high volumes of music your hearing will progressively get worse over time, which can (and will) lead to deafness in one (or both) ears. it really depends on where the source of music is coming from and how loud the sound is. Overall listening to music everyday is not bad for your ears in anyways. Listening to music everyday is actually quite good for overall health, believe it or not.
|
I only get kinda scared when I've been listening to really loud songs for a while... Like, I had ringing in my ears after listening to Guilty for about an hour XD That made me a little scared, but I don't, like, have nightmares about it or anything lol
|
I'm not afraid. I only listen to really loud music on occasion.
But generally speaking, I have bigger things to worry about than losing my hearing. |
@captain-kawaii123 : That happened to me too xD
|
I love my MP3 (and so of course, I'm wearing headphones a lot), and so yeah, I worry about my hearing... But it's not just music. I get worried that my hearing will get worse because my husband likes to blast the T.V. And at my old job, I often had to blow up balloons for children, and sometimes they'd pop, and I'd totally flip out because it would go right in my ear, lol.....
My hearing is very precious to me. Music is my life, and obviously I need my hearing for that, so I like to be cautious....maybe a bit too much at times, lol. But, I think I worry for nothing. My hearing is really good, from what I can tell. I always have the volume on everything many notches lower than what everybody needs to hear properly, so yeah.... I stress myself out for nothing. -_-' |
I don't think it can damage your hearing to the extend you'll be deaf.
There's always some health risk in everything. But sometimes Doctors tend to exaggerate on stuffs like you'll get cancer from using phone and you'll get deaf from listening to music which I think is just absurd |
Hm. I'm not actually that worried... of course, as everyone has said, it doesn't matter how much you listen to, it's the volume you listen to it at. ;D
(Repetitive? ;D) |
Well.. yeah .. sometimes I get scared :/ My hearing isn't that good lol Most of the times if someone says quietly something I don't hear it but my friends do :( But when I'm listening with my earphones, I don't put the volume to 100%. It is louder, but the quality isn't that much and you can't hear clearly. My friend does that with her mp4 player, and she hands over the headphones and I hate it when she does it!
But I usually listen on earphones when I get in the bus, when I go to college/meet my friends. I would say 1.5 hours of travel to city and back home :) Also, my tv is buzzing and it hurts my ears so much that I go watch tv in my room -_- Really, I wanna buy a new tv!! |
I aint affraid. I listen to the music everyday for like an hour a day while im on the way to school or to work. my earphone always stay with me. I always set 3rd highest volume if im at outside
|
I've never been afraid. I listen to music every single day, on the bus to and from school, at night before bed, in the car, etc. etc. The thing is, I don't feel worried because if I do blast the volume on my music loud, I don't blast the volume while I'm listening through earbuds/headphones, or in a small area where it fills the whole room. The only time I feel one should be worried about hearing damage due to music is if you're playing the music at a volume too loud for the size room you're in, and too loud through headphones. :yes
|
I'm the one who has problem with hearing after too much listening music thru earphone. When I was kid my mother gave me a walkman, then I couldn't stop listen to it everyday except when I was in school (it's prohibited to use walkman in class, of course LOL), I even couldn't sleep withour music. Later I started to feel my hearing ability was decreasing, a doctor once told me to use hering-aid but I refused.
This is also affecting my body's balance, if I walk in a stairs sometimes I feel like I'll fall. But until now I still use a headphone to listening music. It's about 6-7 hours per day in mid volume LOL After I read this topic maybe I should be more concern about my ear's problem.. |
Sort of, I usually listen to my iPod at about 50% loudness or just over.
