Oh ok ^^; So like anyways, since Avex said that to her, "You have to have this image if you want to be successful" etc, when did she start to sex things up and pick up the erokakkoi style she's known for? I'd figured she was always like that. And I can't believe she "doesn't like it" O_O

In 2005 a little while before her contract was over, she needed to make a desperate move for some sales so they would renew it.

at the beginning of her career, she had a really plain image, nothing special to set her apart from other artists. the sexy thing was something that was popular at the time, so it was something unique and different. they knew she couldn't do the cutie thing too well because she doesn't have that childish appearance.

the sexy began in 2003 though

None. I mean, when you think of popular female Japanese singers (of that time[sort of]) you think of Ayu (not sexy), Namie (can be sexy but not like Koda), Ai (cute), BoA(...no), Hikki (WAYY no), etc. No one was really doing it then, and no one has to this extreme.

I know I'm dragging on but I'm really shocked to hear that she doesn't like this sexy image. Why does she keep doing it then? I kind of feel that she was sort of selling her self out. (I'm not trying to start an argument or flame, really!)

Not in Japan lol Maybe Namie...but no one was thinking about her then.

Remember that Japanese people really love American music.

Anyway, these are all the reasons why I really respect Kuu as a person.

@Edge: What other choice does she have? Her stuff still isn't selling as well as I'm sure they'd like. She at least gets to have some fun and diversity in her music now. Not all of the songs she comes out with are Juicy's or BUT's.

I think for her, making the "sexy" music is just part of the job. Like Ayu says, sometimes she wants to make music, and sometimes she has to make music because it's her job. I honestly think Koda's just happy to be here and performing.

And besides...I think she can manipulate it so she can have fun with it.

Just because they weren't one of the big three (Ayu, Namie, and Kuu) doesn't mean nobody else was doing it.

If it was so popular at the time, there's bound to be other artists who were trying it out as well. Of course, they didn't reach the same degree of success that Koda did.
All I'm saying is that Koda has never been successful or popular because she's unique. It was because she took her top off and had a big label backing her.
If she didn't do either of those things, she would be nowhere right now, much like the other artists who tried the same thing but fell into obscurity because they didn't have a big label to pull all of the publicity stunts and tricks for some extra attention and sales.

i think that she didn't like the sexy image at first, but did it anyways to continue doing what she liked doing. i do think she got used to it and ended up liking it, otherwise she wouldn't have continued doing what she did and enjoyed herself. when you watch her makings, you don't see a person who's forced to do things this way.

what i meant in the other post, was the sexy image was popular with the audience, but was unique and different in terms of what known artists were doing then. of course avex had a lot to do with it, she was lucky to be with a label who saw something in her that they could exploit to earn cash.

Clearly she's an exhibitionist and gets off on that sort of thing. Look at the control she has over her career now, and she still does it!
Not that I mind. I appreciate a girl who can get freaky like that.

I know Cutie cleared this up for you, but I just want to say, that I understand what you're saying, but what I am saying is that no one had quite taken it to the level that Koda did, and I think Namie comes closest. Although I know there were some girl bands in the 90's that did this sort of thing, they still never went to the levels kuu did.

And you're right about her success.

I personally, honestly, when I was a die hard Ayu fan, like I disrespected her so much for that, but now actually understanding how everything went down, and liking her music...I feel the opposite. And now, although I still think she doesn't have the level of control that some of the bigger name artists do, I respect her for taking what they threw at her, and molding it so that she can have fun with it, and love what she does. She is an Exhibitionist, and I think she will continue doing it...

however...I also think that it might not be so great for her career if she stops doing it...and maybe that's something to take into consideration as to why she still does it.

i think KUU is more sexy in that aspect. and she can do 'hot things' (i mean the erotic part of JUICY) that namie can't do.. don't misunderstand me, you understand.. kuu does 'taboo' things in comparison with other artists, and i love it *-*

their images/styles aren't that different though, they both sing about sex and have that 'sexy' image.

that's what we were saying...that's why she made it, and other people didn't.

I didn't really mean to bring in Namie, Namie is famous in her own right, and in a different way. She's just the only one I can really think of that comes a little close...even though most of what she does is very different, identity is right about her "Sexy Cool" image.

I know there are other obscure artists...but even they weren't that popular back then. The Sexy image was fueled by the American market, not Japan's. Which is what I was getting at by my post on the first page...but whatever.

We have our Koda, and she pulled through, and now she has fun and yey.

i've heard "alive" on the radio around here in the convenient stores and such, and it's growing on me. :)

That conversation about Kuu's sexy image was very interesting. I personally don't think she kind of liked her sexy image. And I also think that it fits nicely with her. It's a part of our beloved Kumi Kuu and I wouldn't change it. >:3

I think now, she's become accustomed to the ero-kakkoii Koda Kumi as being a part of her performance side.

I think it was in that EXCITE! Interview where she said something about there being 2 parts to her, Kuu-chan & Koda Kumi and she's trying to keep a balance between them now? I think that's the way to go :P

Anyway, I've always known of Kuu's really hard life at avex... sigh. But seeing where she is now with success, I'm just so proud of her, and I really respect this woman because she has stuck through literally everything for her dream.

Yeah, that's one of the main reasons I admire her, too.
She believed in and fought for her dream, it was hard, she had to make sacrifices, but she made it in the end.
That's why she always cries while singing walk. It's a song about realizing your dreams, so yeah~

I can't believe I cried watching that documentary... I'm not a super big fan but still the things she said, the way she spoke to the girls at the high school in her cute accent, the talk of dreams, and the drama version of her life was so cute too! The only thing I didn't like was the collection of dirty movements at her lives and PVs at the beginning O_O I haven't seen the whole thing but it also it said her father supported her. Eheh, she liked DREAMS COME TRUE.

I don't understand japanese as well, but you can understand the most important things without knowing japanese, caus it's made like a movie (e.g. the part where her father throws the shoe on her).
I've read a english summary from this documentary once, that's why I know everything going on in the documentary, but I don't find it anymore, sorry guys. :(

Earlier posts exaggerated what happened. It was said that her father threw a shoe at her before an audition because he disapproved but actually what happened was that she wanted to go out the night before an audition, supposedly to practice, but her mother and father got angry and he threw an article of clothing at her that hurt her eye, I'm assuming there was a metal part or something. He apologized and apologized, so actually he supported her dream.

EDIT: I'm watching the part now with Max, he really called her fat like if it was nothing O__O

This documentary really opened up a side for me of Koda that I hadn't seen and I must say it was very touching and made me empathize with her more. I really respect her now more as a person and as an entertainer.

Oh and I thought this was very interesting: Koda basically accredits her rise to the top to Misono... they talked about it for a while in the interview.

Well they work in different buildings most likely (since ayu is on avex trax and kuu is on Rythme Zone) so kuu gave chocolates to the people in that building but maybe she didn't give any to artists, maybe just her staff or something. XD

I remember that when BoA went to avex for the first time she told that when she met ayu she said hello to her and she was really happy about it. ^^

that girl is actually really good at covering kumi's songs, she's done a bunch. her TABOO cover was awful though, which makes me think it's a pretty hard to sing while dancing... so i can excuse some of kuu's crappy performances. :P

Okay either I'm dumb, or no one else knew about it...but I've had Trick CD+2DVD for about 2 months and today I found out that the making of's for the pv's are on there...did anyone else besides me not know this???

:laugh yes they're there! the making of dirty ballroom is also on the second DVD when you click on the nose.

i love the making of show girl and they look like they had so much fun shooting JUST THE WAY YOU ARE. also, TABOO would've been so much better if they didn't do so much editing and made it all dark... the sets looked great the way they were.
