Covers better than the original?

Let me start off by saying this: No offense to any Miley Cyrus fans. :P

I found this cover of "The Climb" on YouTube which, in my opinion, proves that it's a beautiful song. Just not to be sung by Cyrus. X3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFSI9X6R1sE

This was going to be a thread just about this one cover, but then I thought that really wouldn't be fair, so... What covers have you found that were better than their original song?

JackieRos 6th September 2009 02:41 AM

ayus covers of sweetbox are better than the original (i know not covers but...)

Chibi_Venus 6th September 2009 02:46 AM

^ Nah, I think those can be considered covers in this thread. :)

JackieRos 6th September 2009 02:51 AM

I love her cover of that song!

NintendoHTF1242 6th September 2009 04:17 AM

MiChi's covers of London Bridge and Smells Like Teen Spirit were amazing. And I personally think both were better than the originals.

paper_doll 6th September 2009 04:21 AM

I absolutely love the version of The Beatles' Helter Skelter from Across the Universe. Most of the songs in that film were really well done, but that one was just amazing. I can't even listen to the original anymore.

zyoeru 6th September 2009 04:34 AM

OTEP's cover of Breed. :P

happiholic★ 6th September 2009 04:47 AM

Gnarls Barkley's cover of Gone Daddy Gone.

Polyrhythm 7th September 2009 12:17 AM

DA1SUK1DAY01691 7th September 2009 12:00 PM

Roflwafflelova on YouTube is amazing! :)

I noticed he does more English stuff now, but he did a lot of Namie and Ayu. :)

Chibi_Venus 7th September 2009 10:52 PM

Oh, I don't know if this should count, but I really like the cover of "Roxanne" (originally by The Police) in the movie Moulin Rouge! It's sooooooo good. :luv2

AyuRox 8th September 2009 01:03 AM

Baaahhh... faaar too many covers are better than the originals to me.

here...
http://mentalmadness.de/index.php?se...s&lang=eng&ID=
Pretty much any of those covers are better than the originals for me... (not all of the songs on the link are covers, but for those that are (and of those that I have), they're better than the orignals for me)

And the whole SUPER EUROBEAT VOL. 193 album... yeah

And I second Ayu's sweetbox covers and Utada's cover of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. And also Utada's covers of With Or Without you and Take On Me.

On a slight off-topic note, who thisnk's that dream's cover of M was better than Ayu's? I don't think anyone here would, but it worth asking...
And who thinks Ayu should do a cover album? hhhmmmm??? anyone?

[edit] decided that instead of giving you a link with a giant list of releases, I should at least mention some of them. soooo, covers that are better than the originals to me...

Missy Stylez-Bleeding Love
De-Grees-Just Dance
Mad Flush-Let Me Be Myself
Andrew Spencer vs. LAZARD-Here Without You
Jan Wayne vs. RainDropz!-Numb
Ultra Flirt-Heaven Is a Place on Earth
Niko-Livin' On a Prayer (yeah, yeah... all you Bon Jovi Fans can hate me...)
Niko-Night Of Fire
Cherry-Dear My Friend
Helen-Future World

The albums EXIT TRANCE PRESENTS TranceMaster (1, 2, and 3), Eurobeat Disney (1,2, and 3), HOUSE * DISNEY

And there's a whole bunch more, but I guess you could call the ones in this list the ones I like more...

extepan 12th September 2009 07:50 AM

dannii minogue - he's the greatest dancer is much better than the original

Aderianu 12th September 2009 03:31 PM

Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I do disagree... ~~~

I prefer Marlyn Manson version

aloopy 12th September 2009 04:46 PM

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (original is by Leonard Cohen)
No Doubt - It's My Life (original is by Talk Talk)

My Rainbow 12th September 2009 06:11 PM

Mariah Carey - Without You
Mariah Carey - Against All Odds
Hitomi Shimatani - Papillon (Janet Jackson - Doesn't Really Matter)
Moulin Rouge - Your Song (I love it because of the production, it's like an orchestra version!)

spookshow 13th September 2009 12:39 PM

Nightwish does an awesome cover of "over the hills and far away"

also, (am going through my covers playlist)
Orgy - Blue Monday
Placebo - Running up that hill
Amy Lee - Sally's Song (from nightmare before christmas)
Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love, This is Halloween, Personal Jesus
Elva - crazy love
Zeromancer - Send me an angel

(hehe, is it obvious that i like a good cover song?)

I agree with these, but I also love the originals, bar Over the Hills, but I also LOOOOOOOOOOVE Fiona Apple's version of Sally's Song. <3

I actually prefer Gackt's cover of Love by John Lennon... :P

Also, I really love Ami Suzuki's version of potential breakup song. <3

not covers. they just featured small samples of the originals in the background.

Which cover is better than the original?

Speaking of The Beatles, I think Joe Cocker's With A Little Help From My Friends was waaaaay better and more heartfelt than the original.

Andrenekoi 15th September 2009 02:39 AM

First... I like Miley Cyrus... she is pretty awesome for someone her age and owns most jpop at performing... Don't like most of her songs cuz IMO she is very... teen orienteded... But she is only 16, so, can't expect much more...

Second... Namie's 60s70s80s aren't covers, the songs only samples famous songs from other singers... and Wishing on the same star is not a cover, the songwriter just sold the song for a lot of people...

Third... Utada > Green Day xD

JaysenRyan 15th September 2009 08:23 PM

i like the Girls Aloud version of I Think We're Alone Now. The Radio mix though not the cd version.

It's funny you say that, I cannot stand the across the universe soundtrack.

I LOVE cover songs, but honestly a lot of them should NEVER be done. Ill talk about one cover I cannot stand. Everyone familiar with 'Bohemian rhapsody' by Queen? Every cover I have ever heard of it was UTTER FAILURE. I've heard maybe ONE cover fo the song I liked by Lucia Micarelli: http://www.imeem.com/artists/lucia_m...y-bonus-track/

but other than that....you just can't do that song correctly.

And to post about the 'sweet dreams are made of this' cover by Manson, I liked it a lot. He does some pretty neat coever songs...but I could also be biased cause I REALLY like Manson

Kingdom 16th September 2009 05:42 AM

my favorites:

dbsk - survivor (demo but i guess it still counts :shrug)
emi hinouchi - the love bug (boa cover)
koda kumi's swallowtail butterfly cover (orig. by chara)

zyoeru 17th September 2009 08:14 AM

I like the cover of I Think We're Alone now...but I cannae remember the band who covered it. XD
Jaysen reminded me of it. XD

Aditmi Krisnasaki ~II~ 17th September 2009 08:22 AM

You'll Be in my heart by Usher...^^

The only person I can think of that covered that song is The Birthday Massacre. 8D

I like Origa's "Waga Kokora no Maria" waaaaay better than the original by Yoko Takahashi.

I know that Topmodelz and Annakiya covered it (the latter being better than the former, imo) There's probably a lot of covers of it. It could take you a while until you find any one particular cover. :shrug

And Mariah Carey's Without You is a cover??? O_o I had no idea. I know that Liz Meyer covered it, but when I looked up the title on iTunes and Mariah Carey's was the most popular, I just assumed that she did the original. So who does do the original, then?

XFER 21st September 2009 03:34 AM

Each and every song on Tori Amos' album "Strange Little Girls" she really knows how to make awesome covers.
