On May 2, 1998 Hide-san had committed suicide in his mansion, "Noah's Ark" bathroom. According to both Hide-san's brother and roommate, he came home around 6:30 a.m that day, both brothers completely drunk. Hide-san's roommate helped him to bed and left him to sleep.
Around 7:30 that same morning, Hide-san's roommate went up to check on him and found him hung with a towel wrapped around his neck and tied to the door knob. Apparently, Hide-san had taken one of his bathroom towels, ripped it in half and tied the two ends together to make a long rope. He tied one end around the door knob, the other end around his neck and hung himself, still in his t-shirt and shorts that he had worn to bed.
Hide-san was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival at approximately 9 am. Investigators at Hide-san's mansion did not find a suicide note, no signs of a struggle and no signs of forced entry. Hide-san killed himself.
Matsumoto Hideto was laid to rest on May 7. His funeral, held at the prestigious Tsukiji-Honganji temple in central Tokyo, shut down Tokyo's central region for the entire day. The streets were lined with thousands of mourning fans waiting to sign the funeral book laid at his altar.
The following was taken from The Nihon Sun May 4 (Like the US Wall Street Journal) X-Japan HIDE - Mysterious self-hanging Suicide hide commits suicide by hanging!
On May 2 around 7 in the morning, former guitarist of disbanded group X-Japan , HIDE (age 33, real name Matsumoto Hideto) committed suicide by hanging. A suicide note was not found. HIDE recently returned to Japan from a trip to L.A. last month to begin promotional work for his new single. He was energetically working before this mysterious suicide occurred.
This was a sudden suicide that caused many people to wonder "why" it happened. According to police reports, HIDE was taken to Tokyo mansion, Noah's Ark by this younger brother (age 30) at approximately 6:30 a.m. They wer both drunk when HIDE was dropped off, and HIDE's younger brother thought (HIDE) went to sleep. At about 7:30 a.m., the woman living with HIDE became worried and went to check on him when she discovered him unconscious, hanging by the neck on his bathroom door. She immediately dialed 119 (Emergency line) and he was taken to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival at 8:52 a.m.
At the time of death, HIDE was wearing a running shirt and shorts. The towel used in the suicide was ripped in half lengthwise with the top and the bottom ends tied together hooked onto the bathroom door. The body was found in a sitting position hanging from the towel around his neck. The woman who discovered him and her friend were staying in another room. There was no suicide note. The body was claimed later in the day by his younger brother and parents.
HIDE was planning to release "PINK SPIDER" on the 13th and "EVER FREE" on the 27 of this month. For promotional work, he had returned from L.A. just last month on the 27th. On May 1st, he taped a segment for the Fuji TV Music Program "ROCKET PUNCH!" (Monday) nights at 11 p.m. - scheduled to air on the 11th). This was his last work. After he participated in X-Japan's last concert at Tokyo Dome last year and the Kohaku Uta Gassen, his solo project "hide with Spread Beaver" had a great start with the single "Rocket Dive" which debuted at Number 4 on the Oricon music charts. His album, which was scheduled for release in June, was delayed until September, and he was planning a national tour during the summer. His musical career was looking good. Also, his radio program "HIDE no ALL-NIGHT Nippon-R" began on April 10 and was still being broadcast. Until now, his broadcasts were taped in Los Angeles. His next broadcast was to take place in the studio. The director of the show said, "There was no indication about this happening. It's quite a shock."
Everything was looking good for hide. His production office said, "His work is doing well. I can't think of anything that would cause him to kill himself." He may have a problem that he couldn't discuss with anyone, possibly dealing with work, or maybe problems with women. We can only wonder what happened in that hour between the time he came home and when he killed himself.
