American Songs

I think the title of this thread will attract people. |D I searched for a thread similar to this and it gave me tons of pages and since i haven't seen one within the first few pages I thought I should do it.
__________________________________________________ ________________
I think we could have an interesting discussion here. What jpop (or really any Asian song) do you think sounds very American like? As in, if it was rerecorded in English, it would probably do well on American radio?

Off the top of my mind:

Meisa Kuroki - Like This
Leah Dizon - Love Paradox
Utada Hikaru - Prisoner of Love
G-Dragon - The Leaders
Jasmine - Koi

So what songs do you think have a very American feel? Or would do very well on American radio if resung in English?

jiarongisme 10th March 2010 03:46 AM

The one that comes right to my head is Namie's Shut Up. XD

Polyrhythm 10th March 2010 03:48 AM

Utada Hikaru's Prisoner of Love.

jean-baptiste 10th March 2010 03:50 AM

a lot of Namie songs. :yes

and i agree with Love Paradox and Prisoner Of Love.

[kokoro♥] 10th March 2010 03:53 AM

LP and PoL are the top two I always thought would also o.o

Andrenekoi 10th March 2010 04:50 AM

Pretty much anything Utada released before Deep River singles...
Pretty much anything Namie released of r&b/hip-hop
The same goes for Koda

jean-baptiste 10th March 2010 04:55 AM

^ :yes

xLitax 10th March 2010 05:01 AM

Namie - It's All About You

NintendoHTF1242 10th March 2010 05:16 AM

MY LOVE by Namie Amuro definitely! That song would be HUGE.

Picaflor 7/4 10th March 2010 05:25 AM

I think MiChi could make it big in America. Crystal Kay too.

xLuna&1LOVE 10th March 2010 01:23 PM

I agree with the members who are saying 'Namie Amuro!'

noidea 10th March 2010 01:25 PM

Ayu - Startin'

I kinda always got an american vibe from it

Aditmi Krisnasaki ~II~ 10th March 2010 01:41 PM

Namie - Hello
Ayu - GUILTY -> so Linkin-Park-ish :yes
Namie - WHAT A FEELING
Namie - LOVE GAME

so muuucccchhh Namie... ROFL

zyoeru 10th March 2010 05:31 PM

Anything by Chihiro. http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/oncihi11.jpg

the one song with Namie Amuro and Ai. . . what was it called. . .Uh Uh. . .

and a lot of Koda songs. . .i dont think a lot of ayu songs would fit so perfectly into a genre that s good for them.. .except maybe a few ballads. and maybe if u play with the arrangements just a little.

Actually, no seriously. I think SOME Chihiro songs would do well like X. Purely because it'd find a rock crowd. :P

ストロボ・EdGE 10th March 2010 08:49 PM

OLIVIA's music but I'm not sure if it's the fact that some of it is completely and in perfect English.

U-GO-BOY 10th March 2010 09:01 PM

Kumi's TABOO and Eien from Boa

happiholic★ 10th March 2010 09:04 PM

Kuu's Under I think would be popular in America now, it's very On to the Next One. Take Back could be popular if it were the 1990s again.

ストロボ・EdGE 10th March 2010 09:06 PM

This sounds like it was made in New Orleans lol...

Picaflor 7/4 10th March 2010 09:07 PM

I forgot about taboo. That definitely would do amazing on american radio. I always got a justin timberlake feel from it.

I get american vibe from startin' too x,x

U-GO-BOY 10th March 2010 10:24 PM

and I think A-L-I-V-E by Foxxi misQ could also be successful in the US..

dreamland2.0 10th March 2010 11:52 PM

A Page by Jin Akanishi would probably do well in America
though it's already in English...

And Want Me, Want Me my Namie... and maybe One Night Magic by Hikaru...

PoetGirl 10th March 2010 11:57 PM

many songs by Namie @_@
I dont like that american influence, uh.
I cant think of anything else since I always delete and forget such songs lol.

Paparazzi 11th March 2010 12:43 AM

lol 95% of these songs don't sound anything like what's on American radio AT ALL.

Anyway,

Sparkle by Ayumi could work, and Sunrise definitely would. Sunrise is by far one of the most americanized jpop songs i have ever heard.

FIRE by 2NE1 maybe

a lot of Miho Fukuhara songs would do well on Adult Contemporary radio (especially ON TOP OF THE WORLD -- and hey, that's already in English!)

anyone who thinks TABOO would succeed is delusional because it's just too different from what American likes. Yes -- it's electro pop -- but it's very very different than what is popular in America.

AyUta 11th March 2010 03:18 AM

BoA's Eien

I do agree that people often exaggerate Kumi's music being so American-like, even TABOO.... But are you being serious, or are you just trying to anger people, lol? Because if TABOO wouldn't work, neither would Sparkle (they're both pretty much the same sort of thing); Sunrise DEFINITELY would not work, considering it's extremely, you know, J-Pop. The only thing more J-Pop is stuff like Kumi's SUPERSTAR, lol. :\

Picaflor 7/4 11th March 2010 03:44 AM

like hell taboo wouldn't work. it would work more than sparkle. I don't see anything american in that. ayumi's connected would be very good in clubs.

YuriChan 11th March 2010 03:54 AM

I would defenatly say Meisa Kuroki's Are ya ready, Ayu's (don't) Leave me alone, half of B'z('s) discography, Kuu's SHAKE IT, 4minute Hot issue... May I say more? XDD

ストロボ・EdGE 11th March 2010 05:41 AM

Have you guys ever heard an American song and thought it sounded "Japanese"?

but you're from germany, the songs you mentioned were all drizzly, germany singles. of course they're going to be played in clubs, not here in america though. the most we ever got was utada's devil inside remixes.

Polyrhythm 11th March 2010 06:22 AM

DJ Mike Rizzo (guy who opened Utada's US shows) asked for song suggestions over at Utada.net forum and one member suggested Ayu's evolution. He listened to it and said he is going to play it at his future shows. 0_o

Kingdom 11th March 2010 07:01 AM

kuu's music is very western friendly... i think TABOO would hit number 1 on the billboard if executed properly

tbh i get the feeling that most of the people here are not from the US... you are suggesting some horrible songs that would flop on american radio lol

I'm not sure if that counts. He openly asked for suggestions, and upon hearing it, personally liked the song, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be american/radio play worthy because one dj happens to like it. That would be cool though. XD

like the songs on american radio aren't already flops? haha. American radio sucks. especially since it's taken over by rap producers who know how to use nothing except autotune and synthesizers. and know how to only write song lyrics about drugs, women, and being bad ass. not like Japan doesn't use autotune and synthesizers as well. but not nearly as much. lyric though, I hope japan never turns that way. >>

^^^omg my brother jsut loves his lil wayne. i only like Kanye West for his last album. teh most creative thing ive heard from a rapper lyrically lol. i think american mainstream needs help nowadays (slthoug htheres some i love of course) and also there are some of these songs that make me wonder i some of u know what american radio is like. . .its sorta around florida: Lady Gaga, Drake, Kesha, Owl City, Justin Beiber, more Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Kesha again lol, Black Eyed Peas and it never ends T.T

what about rock music ( i love me some american rock bands and i dont mean Fall Out Boy). what japanese rock songs could hold their own. . .i personally think the Gazette songs could when referring to vkei but if they saw the gazette. hmm. idk.

U-GO-BOY 11th March 2010 09:20 PM

^ example?

Koda Kumi - Ima Sugu Hoshii...
Spoiler:
Ooh...so
You say this is a night for a woman’s pleasures
Ooh...I understand baby
so you tell me that waiting for me is unbearable
This ain’t no excuse for anyone to use
but, my body won’t listen
to these words because
I’m alright getting high on desire

*I want it right now
Make me throb with your hot tongue, your burning love
lights my fire, let me feel your flames on my body
’till the end of the night

Ooh...this has already
become a night on which nothing else matters
Hey... don’t misunderstand
it’s not an excuse for you or anyone else
to be cheap on me
It’s time for the kind of Sex I like,
so close your eyes
and wait for me if you want me

**I want to feel the burning soul
within me, even if it’s just for tonight
Let me be free to throw away everything
Let me feel your hot splashes

(Rap)
Oh baby
Tonight I don’t need a candlelight dinner
or a sweet talk and then Bye bye
I want you, that’s all, Understand?
But don’t misunderstand! This is my stance
So baby Take me, Lick me from down there
Use your great technique and Make me say “Yes! Yes! Yes!”
Go deeper and deeper
It’s S E X Come on
So satisfy me Round 1
Round 2 Round 3 and Round 4 Here we go
It’s K O D A K U M I so
make me Climax please
One more time, one more time
fulfill me tonight, over and over
Time out? No need for that baby
Do do do me all night till morning comes

*Repeat
**Repeat

Yeah, do it this way ’till the end of the night...

Really, all the "deep" jpop love songs or whatever have almost the same lyrics... The themes aren't the same, but being american themes or japanese themes, they really lack variety on both markets

example of creativity:

Spoiler:
This year, another season has passed.
Memories have become faded.
The border between my vague dream and
reality has become blurred.

Even so, the dream I once told you of
had not a single lie in it.
La La-i

Today was fun,
and tomorrow will surely be fun as well.
"These days will continue forever,"
or so I thought at the time.

Throughout the endless days I felt
as if something was missing.

I blamed it on these unnatural times,
and just gave up.
La La-i

Today was very sad,
and even if I cry tomorrow,
someday the time will come that I can laugh
and remember the time we had together.

How much time must pass by,
in this finite existence of ours?
We'll live in the now,
and what will we find?

Spoiler:
our last kiss
tasted like tobacco
a bitter and sad smell

tomorrow, at this time
where will you be?
who will you be thinking about?

you are always gonna be my love
even if I fall in love with someone once again
I'll remember to love
you taught me how
you are always gonna be the one
it's still a sad song
until I can sing a new song

the paused time is
about to start moving
there's many things that I don't want to forget about

tomorrow, at this time
I will probably be crying
I will probably be thinking about you

you will always be inside my heart
you will always have your own place
I hope that I have a place in your heart too
now and forever you are still the one
it's still a sad song
until I can sing a new song

you are always gonna be my love
even if I fall in love with someone once again
I'll remember to love
you taught me how
you are always gonna be the one
it's still a sad song
until I can sing a new song

Spoiler:
My breath turns white, as winter comes
and in your city, snow is already falling
I can feel you, far far away
but in my heart I feel no much distance
One day, our wish will be
the only thing I need
If we stay together
we won’t have to be weak
*If I could be at the place you see
I wouldn’t need anything else
But you’re not here in this place and
in all the snow I see how my world stops turning
Some times, I sort of thought,
that there’s no happiness, other than here
Can people love someone, and then forge that
person, and then love another person?
We couldn’t be together from the very beginning
be we were able to become as one
Because we meet half way we don’t have
to bother with those useless efforts
*Repeat x 2
I want to be with you, with you oh baby
I’ll never forget you
As the snow keeps on falling
I embrace our moments in my heart

Spoiler:
A man’s shadow lines the pavement
You walk in the twilight
Always holding my hand
If I’m by your side, I might not have to cry
The winds becomes cold
And I can smell winter
Gradually, in this city
the seasons will change as you come close to them
This year, the first snowflowers bloom
as we draw closer
As I look upon this time
the hapiness overflows in me
If we depend on each other’s love, we’re not weak
I simply, love you
These thoughts are straight from the heart
Whatever happens, as long as I’m with you;
I get the feeling that I can overcome anything
I know we can have this kind of life forever
So I pray that it will continue like this
The wind sways the window
and at night I wake up shivvering
I’ll chance any sadness
by putting a smile on my face
The snowflowers flutter down
outside the window
Though I don’t know why they stop falling
we will dye this city
We may think
“for who’s sake are we doing this?”
But we know it’s because we know love
If you ever get lost
I’ll become a star, and light your path
At night, when you smile, or get wet with tears
I’ll be by your side, always and forever
This year, the first snowflowers bloom
as we draw closer
As I look upon this time
the hapiness overflows in me
If we depend on each other’s love, we’re not weak
It’s simple, I just want to be
with you like this forever
So I can feel your gentleness
Pure white snowflowers,
pilling up in this city
In our hearts, we quickly draw our feels,
I’ll be with you forever, from this moment on...

Spoiler:

The moonlit evening shows its face
And a child's voice is vanishing
Far away, far away, I guess you're somewhere in this sky
In the end of the Summer, we sneaked away to this park we had found
Do you remember that constellation somehow?

Even if I can't meet you, I pursue my memories
I wanna look at the same happiness
Along with that smell, the fireworks open in a flash

I want to live, I want to live and run to your place right now
I can't see anything in the pitch dark, even if it's scary, I'm all right
The countless starry sky is still here now, forever
I won't cry because the sky I saw before with you was beautiful

The sound of your shoes remains in my ears and resounds as far as that path
I guess I'm staring at my own great shadow

It may not change at all but my painful feelings are getting inflated
No matter how I felt, you're no longer with me

I want to live even if it's a little, even if it's a little, right by you're side
You're the one I like the most, so I can be strong
I tried softly reciting a wish upon a shooting star
I won't cry, has it reached you? In this beautiful sky

I want to live, grasping tightly your little hand towards your place
I want to cry, that was, that was a beautiful sky
I tried softly reciting a wish upon a shooting star
I want to cry, you won't reach my feelings in this sky...

Spoiler:
Can you celebrate? Can you kiss me tonight?

We will love long long time

I didn't know the meaning of the word "eternity"

(Can you celebrate? Can you kiss me tonight?)
(We will love long long time)
It's just the two of us, isn't it? After tonight, I'll feel a little shy

Lalala... Lalala...
Lalala... Lalala...

Forever...forever...You'll always watch over me
You search for someone, find them, lost them, and search for them again

You were a long way away, and I was scared, but sometimes
There were wonderful nights, and smiles, but I can't help it; I'm blown by the wind
This is the way I'm living now, but there's nothing wrong with it

Lalala... Lalala...
Lalala... Lalala...

Sweet and painful, young and childish; if I looked back on love
It would be wonderfully cute

My road was so full of mistakes, something went against me as I ran
That's what someone told me

(Can you celebrate? Can you kiss me tonight?)
(We will love long long time)
Wo...I can't escape from my memories, even a little
There's no reason to stand still, tears overflow, smiles overflow

(Can you hold me tight? Let's a party time tonight)
(Say good bye my lonely heart)
I didn't know the meaning of the word "eternity"
(Say hello forever)

Can you celebrate? Can you kiss me tonight?
We will love (long long time)
It's just the two of us, isn't it? After tonight, please take care of me

Can you celebrate? Can you kiss me tonight?

I can celebrate...

all of those were huge hits on Japan =)

Crystal_Ageha 12th March 2010 01:53 AM

The only one I can't think of is the fourth example......

Anywho. There are A LOT of Japanese songs that deal with "deep" and "poetic" lyrics, but who cares? I'd much rather listen to 100 songs talking about the wind or the pain of a lost love, rather than 100 songs that talk about booty shaking or.....well, literally nothing, lol.
No, lyrics aren't everything, but they certainly add a lot. For me, if the singer sucks or the lyrics are terrible, the song had better be really ****ing amazing, hah. The problem with American music is, usually the singer is average at best, the song has extremely *****y lyrics, AND the music is typical and generic; to make matters worse for me (but not for everyone), they rarely use a type or genre that I like enough to ignore all that other stuff. Of course, I do agree with those of you saying that J-Pop isn't much better these days, but at least they still have the good lyrics most of the time, and, in my opinion, they usually sing better (a lot of American artists hardly even sing - it's much closer to rapping D: ).
Having said all that, I would just like to go even more off topic [lol] and share my concern for music these days, as a whole...... Most of it sucks, be it in the U.S. or Japan or Europe or Australia or wherever. And this makes me very, very sad. :( We've really hit a rough patch in creativity, for all of the entertainment industry, actually. >.<

Koda Kumi, Hikaru Utada, Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki, Ai Otsuka, Mika Nakashima... average singers... Jpop doesn't have lots of amazing vocalists, at least not popular ones... popular american acts like Gaga or Beyonce can oversing all the ones I cited like it was nothing...

Besides Britney, Madonna, Rihanna and Disney divas (whose main public is made of children anyway), I think that most american popular singers can hold their own better than Jpop popular singers...

Picaflor 7/4 12th March 2010 02:03 AM

Jpopular. that works :P

it would be cool if american and japanese artists collided and did fantastic music. like lady gaga and namie or something. (just please nothing like that ain't cool. cause it ain't cool) I think with the different lyrics and compositions, they could come up with some pretty neat stuff.

i personally think (without bias) that alot of Big Bang songs and 2ne1 songs would be very popular over here because they are very dance hip-hop lol and hip-hop dance is definitley what is selling over here. i also think this because there have been occassions where i have been listening to one of those two bands and people will hear the music and ask "oh that sounds cool, who is that?" and as soon as i say a korean band they just say "oh.." and it makes me think "really? just because its in a different language you have to just abandon it like that?". but yes so i think these bands would do very well in america.

i also think Jessica H.O.- "Life is good" would sell here

A LOT of Korean music is very American-sounding, actually. But yeah, unless they learn good English and ditch the accent, it still wouldn't fly in the U.S. And even then, the fact that they're Koreans would be against them. It's a shame that's how it is. (Really, BoA did her English album perfect, in terms of what she should do for music in the U.S., and she improved so much in her English - hardly any accent at all! I thought she'd do a little better than what she did, but no. :\)

maybe it was also lack of promotion? i still haven't heard Utada or BoA on the radio or seen them on t.v.

then again...i barely watch t.v and never listen to the radio. xD but no one i know has heard of them though.

^I heard utada's cbtm on the radio, but that was once, and we were in gym class last year. also remember that even if a radio dj is given songs to play, they get to choose what goes on the radio on their station. they don't have to play what they don't want. Not sure if that is the case though. but alot of mainstream, very popular radio stations don't want to play music from some asian girl they've never heard of who isn't popular at all in america.
