Which artist(s) has(have) reinvented better? (Asian&Western)
Here is my list of which artists I think have done very well reinventing themselves during the time of their musical careers, you guys vote for the ones you think have had the BEST reinventions ;)
-Ayumi Hamasaki -Beyoncé -Britney Spears -Christina Aguilera -Koda Kumi -Kylie Minogue -Madonna -Michael Jackson -Namie Amuro :lech:lech:lech |

Ayumi
Beyonce Christina Kylie Madonna MJ Namie & Others |
Ayumi
Madonna Michael Jackson |
Well, Ayumi Hamasaki is, in my eyes, Queen of Reinvention for Japan, hah. She literally changes with every album, and there have been many times that it was drastic, yet it's always worked.
I don't think Kumi has reinvented herself fully ever. She's been pretty much exactly the same since the very beginning, hah. Goofy girl in a sexy costume, making pop and R&B/hip-hop music with techno/electro inspiration. It's not a bad thing that she's always been like this, but she doesn't belong on this poll, I don't think. And Amuro.... I've stated my opinion about her before, so I won't go much into it. But even though she has gone through a few really big career changes, it seems more of a sell out than a reinvention for any reason. :no As for Western artists, both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera had similar reinventions, but they were both huge. And it somehow worked very fluidly, hah. Madonna has reinvented so many times, of course, just like her follower Ayumi. :P Michael Jackson..... He's somebody who either ended up reinventing himself for the worse, or he just tried really hard to reinvent... Either way, I'll vote for him still, because it's the thought that counts. XD I honestly haven't ever noticed Beyonce reinvent herself at all. Same with Kylie Minogue. (But of course, I have never payed attention to the latter--but still! :innocent) |
Ayumi, needless to explain.
Beyoncé went through her first big reinvention now, and it worked wonders... Even if her collaborations with Gaga don't really fit on this, I am... Sasha Fierce made Beyonce going from a girl with big ass and little clothers to a classy sexy woman. Madonna, needless to explain. I would add David Bowie^^ - I don't see a huge re-invention on Namie actually... she only had 2 images trough her 15 years career... The sexy dance music teen idol and the powerful sexy hip-pop diva Britney went from virgin girl next door to be the most sexual pop singer alive... Still, she only had those 2 images and is stucked on the 2nd one for a while... Christina really worked once, when she was the manufaturated teen idol... since she started seeking for respect, she turned out into a 2nd tier pop diva Maybe I will be killed by her fans, but I don't see huge changes on Koda too... IMO she is doing the same thing over and over again since she became big... even if sometimes she tends more to the sexual side, and sometimes to the cute side, it is always the same thing... Kylie done the teen pop princess on the 80s, the indie girl on the 90s and the eletropop diva on the 00s... Still, her results are average at the best... (I mean... besides her peak, Ayu always outsells her, and Ayu have a much smaller selling area) Michael kept changing, had his HUGE peak, went crazy and after that, he ceased to reinvent himself... Maybe he though he was too good to change... |
^ Oh, I forgot about Beyonce's Sasha, since I don't listen to her.... I still stand by my decision on her though, since this is the only thing she's ever done.
|
madonna, namie amuro, ayumi. :)
|
Obviously Ayu. lol
Also Christina. She reinvents herself every album. |
Ayumi Hamasaki
Christina Aguilera Madonna Michael Jackson Namie Amuro |
ayu, bee (fierrcee), xtina (no more dirrrty), mj, namie
|
Ayu & Namie :D
(I don't know Western artists (>_<) XD) |
I say Ayu, Namie Amuro, and Britney Spears have done some serious reinventing :yes.
|
Ayu - well, back in the 1999
Namie - her voice back in the 90s is so awful, I can't believe "Can You Celebrate?" sold more than 2million and be one of the best-selling japanese single ever??? please~ but with "PLAY" and "PAST < Future" she really made me fell in love with her! :yes Kuu - yeah.... TRICK is her first album to have wonderful vocals.. but I just can't stand with ~First Things~ TT Christina AGuilera - AWESOME as always... her career's up and down... debut album in the TOP, the Stripped down the river TT and the back again to the awesome 2006's "Back to Basics" :yes and I'm very excited waiting her new "Bionic" album~ :D |
Ayu
Madonna Namie I think I don't need to explain |
Ayu ^^
Namie Madonna? |
Ayu has no serious competition really.
|
- Madonna
- Ayumi Hamasaki - Kylie Minogue |
Only ayu and ayumi have really been constantly reinventing themselves, I wouldn't even place them in the same category as the other. BOth have done so with great success.
I voted for namie as well, I think commercially, market size taken into account, her transformation has been most successful commercially, maybe along with christinas. I don't think brits transformation was equally commercially successful, but then again she was so huge to begin with. |
Ayu, dont need to describe. mostly same like you guys,
Britney : she is a good girl gone bad and really invented. Koda Kumi : after best second session, everything turned very good |
@_@ I feel people around here don't know Madonna
and that make me feel old @_________________@ |
^ Well, there are a good bit of people here under sixteen, right? And so many are not from the U.S. So it's not too much of a surprise..... I mean, I'm almost too young to know who she is, hah! I'm eighteen, and I don't think I would have heard much about her past career if not for having a general interest in music. (That, and my aunt loved her, so I grew up with an understanding of who this Madonna was.) Sadly, a lot of younger people these days are only going to know Madonna as a creepy, washed up looking muscle-woman from many, many years ago, hah... :\
|
In my opinion, this topic is kind of pointless since I'm sure everyone will say that Ayumi Hamasaki is the best at re-inventing herself... but honestly if it weren't for Madonna... I don't see ayu really reinventing herself nearly as much. After all Madonna has a big influence in Ayu's career both musically and stylistically.
|
I'm going with Ayu firstly, she changes her style all the time and it's always well received, at least in Japan.
I don't know these Western artists too well, or really listen to any of them, but I'll also say Madonna simply for the fact that she's still active and popular after all these years. |
Ayu, Xtina, and above all, Madonna.
I don't really get why many of those are there. Britney? SRSLY? Adding elements of electro doesn't make a reinvention; besides that there isn't much different from her latest to her debut. Christina DEFINITELY. All of her albums are completely different. Started out typical teen bubble gum pop, switched over to overtly sexual pop rock and R&B, then changed it up to a mature blues-y, classy jazz sound. In just 3 albums. Madonna invented re-inventing yourself. |
^ THIS! - minus Ayu ... sorry but thats my opinon
she used to be very re-inventing but in the last couple of years i haven.t see that much progression. With R'n'RC i think she.s on the right way to become the ARTIST Ayumi Hamasaki again. |
Koda Kumi
Michael Jackson Madonna Namie Amuro I personally think Ayu doesn't reinvent herself that much. She mostly does things she has done before and that makes her boring sometimes. :D I'm sorry, I love her but I just had to say what I think personally. :p |

lol if shes done it before that means that shes done heaps already which tells that shes reinvented herself a lot xD :lech |
i think ayu only reinvented her looks and videos...cause her music and songs are practically the same thing...i mean after memorial address her style is always the same.
madonna is the perfect reinvented singer...but after the "american life" era her new reinventions are just recycled of popular music styles. |
The only artists I know well enough to comment on this are Ayumi, Namie and Kumi.
Ayu definitely does, she reinvents her style and her music constantly. Others may not think so but I think those people aren't actually listening. ;) Namie as far as I know only reinvented herself once. Since then it's been a lot of the same but don't get me wrong, it's gets better and better in my opinion. It's like she took something and stuck with it and keeps improving on it. Kumi... I'm still waiting for her to reinvent herself lol. |
Out of that list, I think the only "reinventions" I liked were Ayu's Namie's and Kylie's. Oh yeah, and Alicia Key's.
I used to LOVE Britney before she totally changed her style and that goes for Madonna and Christina too. I haven't noticed much change in Beyonce's style (but that's probably cuz I don't listen to her much) As for Kuu and Michael Jackson, I liked them before, and I like them now :) |
I almost don't even know if I would consider Ayu as reinventing herself. Sure, her albums usually have a different theme to them, but I wouldn't exactly consider any of them an overall reinvention.
I'm not a huge Madonna fan by any means- but she truly is the living definition of reinvention (or atleast was in the 80s and 90s). Kylie went from being the girl next door, to indy artist, to gay icon. Never a huge reinvention- she she has been able to change over the years to stay relevent. With Britney, Koda, Namie- I would say they have had a very fluid change in image/music over the years. Never a reinvention. Christina would be in the same group as Ayumi IMO- she has changed it up with each album, but its never been a reinvention exactly. |
Kylie Minogue
|
koda kumi
most versatile jpop artist of course |

Hmm, I think Ayu & Namie. I don't listen or pay attention to Madonna, so I don't really know, but I hear she reinvents herself a lot too. Ayu is my favorite though, she does it so well. |
Ayu

IMO I think that Ayu invented herself a bit more than others. Here's why...
Early '90s-2000:Here's where she first came on the scene. She was this frail, timid, and innocent looking girl singing about confusion and lonliness. She didn't perform as much and her image was conservative (not including the short-shorts she wore in Appears and other covers and pvs) 2001-2003:This time around was her heyday. She started covering more topics to sing, her image was more "creative" and poppy, and her music had more variety and edge (Some were really dark and others were really cheerful) 2004-2006:For me, this is her coming-of-age period where she spent most of her music experimenting with rock, rnb, and others. Her image was rock-ish with a tinge of sexy. 2007-today:This is her WOMAN stage b/c she has that 'I-am-woman' presence when you see her. Around this time she has done everything and is still working. Her style now is more "settled" than before and she experimenting with a more techno and harder rock sound. So basically she has went from "Sad girl-next-door", "Longing for a purpose girl", "Peace muse", "Summer girl" to "Rock out chick", "Crazy Chic", and now "Classified woman" |
^Well, for sure she reinvented herself a lot, but not more than Madonna...
|
Well the only ones i know on the list are Ayu/kumi/namie
my vote would go to ayu and a bit to namie, namie hasnt really change at all.and i really cant comment on kumi cuz i dont listen to her music or look into her as much as ayu. |

Ayu's more more younger than Madonna so she have time to reinvent herself :yes |
^Well, I agree with u...
but still find weird when people says Namie or Aguilera reinvent themselves better than Madonna... Ayu will be a close one (or at the same level) on some years |

Not that it's not good, it's just predictable but she's good at what she does but she hasn't reinvented jack. |
- Britney Spears [Queen Of Pop, best artist of all-time IMHO]
- Koda Kumi - Ayumi Hamasaki |
