Why do you love Asian music?!

I know a lot of AHS members are not Asian but are still interested in asian music! I'm just curious because a lot of Asian singers can't make it big in the Western world even if they try (BoA, Hikki, just to name a few), yet a lot of asian singers have non-aisan fans....why is there such a disconnect?

Crystal_Ageha 2nd April 2010 10:36 PM

Well, I'm honestly only into Japanese music, because I think K-Pop either all sounds too similar to each other or is too much like Western music, and C-Pop just isn't my thing.

But I love Japanese music because it's so different. In general, they take elements from literally every music style, and it's all popular. On the top thirty chart, you can have an R&B ballade, an acoustic rock song, Visual-Kei, techno, and regular J-Pop, all at the same time. You won't find that in, say, the U.S. For the most part, other countries follow very specific trends, and it's hard to find music that's out of the current one. J-Pop isn't like that, though. I mean, there is an overload of boybands and cutesy, wannabe R&B stars, but that's just the surface. You can still find many other genres very easily. To find that in the U.S., you almost always have to look into lesser known or indies bands, and they aren't always worth checking out.
Also, what I love even more about J-Pop is how well the Japanese language fits with music in general, but especially with J-Pop. It's so perfect... Like, English is such a choppy and....kinda rough sounding language. It doesn't always have the right flow, and sometimes syllables are awkwardly split up in lyrics. But because Japanese is a syllabic language, it always works out perfectly when you sing in that language. It's very...beautiful, I guess. It gives you more to play around with when writing lyrics, too. And I also like that about the other main Asian languages. Like Korean, it's great for rap and R&B (maybe that's why they do so much of it?), because all the sounds kinda create their own beat, hah. And Chinese is a melodic language, so it can be sung very pretty, too.

PoetGirl 2nd April 2010 11:46 PM

I listen to cpop and jpop (or jrnb but its still jpop right?).
Main reason is I need gentle music, not rough and fierce and in your face like
western music mostly is. I need music that is very cute, very sweet and not senseless in its lyrics. Ayumi Hamasaki is only exception of music I listen to. She is kinda in your face,
but she's special. :)

Raiu-Ayu 3rd April 2010 12:03 AM

I actually love Japanese music in particular because it has more of a focus on lyrics. In Western music you need to have one of three things:
1. A really awesome song that will get you famous for five minutes
2. WAAAAY too much sex appeal to the point where watching MTV is like watching the Adult Channel
3. An awesome PR team that gets your song on every TV channel, every radio station and every thing under the sun

I also love it because in Japan artists that aren't maybe selling huge or always getting number #1 still have a strong fan-base, for example AAA; they aren't on the same sales or popularity level as most Johnny's or DBSK but yet their concerts are always packed. In Western music if you don't hit the top 5 then you're nobody and you're just dropped and left to the side.

Another reason is I love how things are released in Japan; its always new material. Artists release singles then albums then get new material. In Western music its like heres an album now here's a song you already know and another one and another one. And now I'll get one new song, add it to my album and re-release for a higher price! Now I disappear for 2 years to do new stuff, delay my new album by months, get in some major controversy and then release my album when I'm all over the news! WTF is up with that??

Lizzyboo 3rd April 2010 12:04 AM

never really gave it thought...i just really like the songs, language does not matter to me. in fact, sometimes i lke the fact that i cant understand the words because there are some american songs that i listen to and the words are sooo stupid that i think "man! the beat in this song is so cool but i wish it was in a different language because the words are stupid" lol i have really said that XD. but i dont know, like poetgirl said some asian music is so cute and bubbly it just makes you feel good, very few american songs relax me like asian songs. this might sound stupid, like i said never really thoughtt about it, just like it so i listen to it :P :heart

TITANIC 3rd April 2010 12:10 AM

I am asian but I only like Japanese and western music. I dont like others or maybe a little bit of korean. I heard from some of my western friends that they dont like any other music except western because they dont understand what is the meaning of the song. they dont even wanna try to hear the song.

aurinko. 3rd April 2010 12:46 AM

I love Asia so I have to love its music ;)
I'm interested in Asian cultures and especially languages so listening to music is my way of getting to know them better. Plus, I've found that singing along to let's say, ayu helps me with my accent. Although the accents aren't usually that vivid while singing, I consider to be a great way of learning :)

So it's this plus what AyuIsTheBest and Crrystal Ageha said :roflmao

AyUta 3rd April 2010 02:44 AM

I adore asian music because the lyrics are real. they have a lot of meaning to them, especially ayus, as well as others. Also the fact that the music is much cooler, and there's a lot of variety. The language is beautiful to me also, it just flows perfectly well with the music.

KarenPang 3rd April 2010 05:21 AM

there's a lot more variety going on as compared to English music which can be extremely manufactured to a certain extent

also the release pattern with regards to jpop too ! I like it that the artistes will release singles 1st followed by albums , it's consistent unlike English music where an artiste can release a single both before/after an album drops

also sometimes you can wait forever before an album's out >_< . Like for Christina Aguilera's case , it has been like what 4 years since Back To Basics was released & she's going to put out her 4th album Bionic soon even though she has been in the business for like forever

visionfactory 3rd April 2010 05:32 AM

I feel that japanese music is clean and true........... about western music and korean music they gave me a fake vibe :no I don't know how to explain it

I'm not asian and I listen to japanese music only

Oh, I really like that, too! :yes To me, it makes no sense whatsoever to release a single after an album. >_<

haha

yeah I never know such a thing existed in jpop til much later on

I like it this way , at least it's more consistent & not messy/everywhere unlike for English music

sure I know jpop acts do release singles after they release albums but that rarely happens . It does happen only for special reasons & etc

Andrenekoi 3rd April 2010 06:12 AM

I don't love asian music... I love some asian artists... and some western artists... good music has no country^^

Meat Pao 3rd April 2010 07:40 AM

I honestly have no idea.

ll moments ll 3rd April 2010 08:05 AM

my family's Southeast Asian (but i was born & raised in America), but i find myself listening to East Asian music because it's different from Western music. i mean, Japan has the 2nd biggest music industry, yet i feel like that's not known to the West, imo. i mostly listen to J-pop. i listen to K-pop too, but i think they still need to work on the industry more & i hope they can focus a bit more on music...than style (to be fair, the mainstream artists). but that's just me.

i like the variation...idol pop, pop, hip-hop, R&B, rock, etc. in J-pop. the style, cultural aspects, the music is very different from Western music. there are things similar to Western music, but very different aspects too. i don't think its better or superior than Western music, but i just enjoy it. i mean, i listen to a mix of everything. lol.

mcluva420 3rd April 2010 08:10 AM

doesnt matter to me. i just love the artists' music and they happen to be asian :P i love a wide range of music so i dont discriminate ;)

Corvina 3rd April 2010 09:37 AM

I love Asia, especially Japan, so it's naturally that I'm interested in the music as well as in other cultural things. So I do know more about japanese music, cause I deal with it more, simple as that. In general the country and the language doesn't matter - like Andrenekoi said, good music is good music. The special thing about japanese music is the diversity and the different mentality, you can see especially in the lyrics. Plus I adore the japanese language. Japanese music is special to me, because I love the japanese country. But I do love some western music as well.

love in music 3rd April 2010 09:51 AM

Because I searched years for good music in my own language but couldn't find any. I only started loving music when I listened to some asian artists because some just release very high quality music that actually has deeper meaning and isn't just talking about sex.

y_nathz 3rd April 2010 10:14 AM

Hmm well I listen to J-Pop and K-Pop and a lil C-Pop too
I like it coz.. uhh well I'm a proud Asian :laugh
No it's not just that
I like J-Pop *uhh well mostly the females XD* because they sounded 'different' than most Western music and Asian female musicians didn't show too much sex appeals
I mean I don't want to waste my money for music with PVs that looked like some cheap porn :laugh
As for K-Pop I need to blame this K-Pop storm in my country lol their music maybe sounded kinda alike but it's addicting and I like K-Pop fashion a lot XD
They're kind of eye candy for me
As for C-Pop I'm not a fan but I do listen to some Chinese music and I like Chinese Orchestra, I found it's beautiful

aloopy 3rd April 2010 07:35 PM

I don't favor Asian music over Western music actually. I love them both equally. There are just as many artists who make original music and write meaningful lyrics in any country as there are in Japan. I listen to music from alot of different countries, from popular artists to unknown bands. I don't wanna limit myself when it comes to music.

dreamland2.0 3rd April 2010 08:50 PM

Western music does not appeal to me...
and I don't enjoy the somewhat trashiness of the western music industry...
I didn't grow up listening to popular music mainly just movie soundtracks... instrumental scores
when I became interested in Japan I found a love of their music
it didn't matter to me that I couldn't understand the lyrics cause for me lyrics don't matter all that much the music is what matters..
I have learned though that the Japanese generally don't sing about trashy stuff though so that was a plus...
For the time being I don't think I'm going to stop listening to Asian music because the wide variety of genres appeal to me and I never get tired of it!

mimika 3rd April 2010 09:41 PM

if so many ppl like asian music..why most of the artists who tried the western mainstream market fail?

Crystal_Ageha 3rd April 2010 09:46 PM

^ Because they're Asian.
When Asian artists, especially Japanese, try "overseas", they at the very least start in the U.S., since it's the biggest market. But because the majority of Americans aren't very accepting of foreigners, especially Asians (and even more so, Japanese, specifically) it's nearly impossible for them to even get a single radio play, let alone enough of a following to be considered successful.
Different European countries are more accepting, but their markets are either significantly smaller than both the U.S. and Japan, or they're pretty much non-existent.

primavera♥ 3rd April 2010 11:24 PM

i actually dont find a lot of Japanese, Korean, etc artists that interesting. not much better than many Western artists frankly. like in japan, i dont like johnny's or boy bands. i dont like really any male solo artists, a good majority of these new "popular" hits from female artist slike Kana Nishino, etc. i dont see why some people say western music is generic opposed to asian music, cuz when i look at whats popular in korea, japan, etc it really is the same in different ways.

its just that Asia has artists that are special to me like Ayu, v-kei bands (even though a few popular are turning into little mainstream pretty boy mutant johnnys bands), etc. . .in general western music, especially some western rock is not so bad. and in the rock matter there are very good bands. *shrugs* whatever.

lyrics from some artists are the only thing i give asian music.

JackieRos 4th April 2010 01:35 AM

because I don't understand what they are saying so I can write my own lyrics:yes

Polyrhythm 4th April 2010 06:56 AM

Because it isn't rap and it isnt hip hop which is what's popular here it seems...

CHE.R.RY 4th April 2010 07:08 AM

Well I am one of those non-Asian listeners you are referring to :).

As for why I like Asian music...well I don't know it's just fun to listen to something different. I started to lose interest in western music there for a time (although it's picking up a little now ;)). At the time, which was about four years ago, I was really into anime and I began to get into Japanese music through that. From there, I ventured a little more past the anime theme music, and found some really great music. For a while, j-music was the only thing I listened to, but I gradually started to renew my appreciation for western music. But as I said, I think I just wanted to here something different and new...I was already exploring Japanese culture...so it kind of went from there lol.

hsienko 4th April 2010 12:23 PM

They actually make music, not stupid bass and drum rambles. They also like their job, they don't become a famous musician/singer/idol then complain about how they have no privacy or how being famous is 'selling out' and all that other bs. Enough said.

KarenPang 4th April 2010 12:30 PM

^ yes that's right , they seem to take a lot more passion/motivation/inspiration in their singing career too

oh there's more to life than just singing about bling bling , sex & women *points to all the rap and hip hop stuff going on in English music

hsienko 4th April 2010 12:57 PM

^
I think one of the reasons why is because being a singer/musicican/idol in japan is like the dream everyone dreams, sorta like how little girls want to be ballerinas.

In the west is more like (and this is what I've observed from behind the music) person is born into impoverish circumstances. Persons sells drugs. Person gets shot. Person has 3 kids with no money. Person decides to become a rapper so they don't have to sells drugs and get shot and so they can have all the bling and is too lazy/stupid and has no skills and is unpleasant to be around so they can't get a job at Walmart like the rest of us. Person posts music on myspace. Person becomes famous and makes money and all the bling. The end.

gallowsCalibrator 4th April 2010 08:56 PM

IMO, Asian music is just...more creative! With Western music, it seems to all be about the same things... Such as love or jealousy or getting drunk (-_-) But with Asian music, the genres always change, and the lyrics are touching and make sense! (Whereas in some Western songs, it seems like they just added random lines in the lyrics to make it rhyme :/ ) Also, Asian songs aren't as...repetitive as Western songs. I swear, there was one song on the radio that was literally only three words repeated over and over :dead2

I love the variety in Asian songs; they make for very interesting songs and are the reason why I abandoned the Western music a long time ago :) There are still some talented people in the Western music industry, but they just can't compare to the gems of the Asian music industry :heart (Ayu, ayaka, Hikki, alan, etc. )

2Hurt 4th April 2010 09:16 PM

I think asian music is more unique than western music... I just can't like western music, it seems like it's all the same... :no Asian music :luv2

JackieRos 4th April 2010 11:26 PM

I hate it that people are bashing on western music to make asian music better
tsk tsk

Picaflor 7/4 4th April 2010 11:36 PM

Because it's 100x better than hearing Akon sing about seeing a woman winding and grinding on a poll, or how Kesha woke up feeling like p.ditty and for no reason at all, brushed her teeth with alcohol.

JackieRos 4th April 2010 11:56 PM

:laugh I love you
that's the answer I wanted to hear!

primavera♥ 5th April 2010 12:36 AM

dont kill me . . .

i think asian music has gone down just as western music. but thats for me. frankly i dont like boy bands (that was so 6-yrs old). too generic and redundant. i dont see how anyone finds them so much more unique than western music. in japan specifically johnny's bands have developed their own set of genericness and i cant stand listening to them now. Kana Nishino, JuJu, and these other girls fit into the same category of extreme likeness. then theres artists that are sooo sweet and natural like ayaka. and then theres Hello Project. like whenever i see oricon it frustrates me and i wonder why people think all of this is soooo unique and ultra talented and just oh fantasmic. in jpop i have to look to specific artists who do actually stand out and produce something thats truly touching truly worth listening to. even BoA i tire of. she goes into rap category for me. i can only enjoy when im at a party dancing. same with lots of Namie and Kuu. even those who praise hikkis older works. its like wtf?

but i realize. if one doesnt like american generic then they like asian or japanese generic.

i dont see why people diss western music for lack of originality. and praise asian music for it. i guess if u add love and sad and inspiring lyrics then people like u more. but when im at a party. i will be all for western hip hop.

but then again. me, i have specific taste in music that never seem to match anyone elses sadly. the only thing i give asian music in general over western is lyrics.

RyRyMini 5th April 2010 12:48 AM

I think people who say they can't stand all Western music because it's all about sex don't know where to look. Mainstream is generally about sex or nothing, true, but there's a lot more out there than what's played on MTV.

Personally, I like all types of music. Granted, most of what I listen to is Japanese, but I have almost an equal amount of music that's not Japanese that I value just as much. Like aloopy said, I don't want to limit myself because there's no reason to.

Michan 7th April 2010 08:43 PM

Well I still like some western artists, but isn't my thing o.O'. I'm a non-asian fan of japanese and korean music ^^! And since I was like 8~9 years old I started to listen some japanese songs and loved a lot. Also I admire and feel inspired by the culture ^-^!! So it's a natural course to like their music.
Now talking about the real reasons. I love j-pop/j-rock because most of music are well done, the lyrics are amazing *even though I just understand a few parts, and need to read the translations I feel touched by the lyrics only listening to the music witch is very very difficult with western music.*. Also I can feel the effort made by the artist to do the best. Also japanese/korean artists are really caring about their fans.
Anyway I like how j-music is so different of western music.
About k-pop i really love some solo artists *_*!!! And i love k-indie artists *__*!! They're amazing =D. Girlbands and boybands aren't my thing, I like 3 or 4.
And with that all the reasons gave by hsienko and picaflor 7/4 xD

xuhm522 10th April 2010 08:20 PM

in this post ,, i think that "Asian music " mainly means "east aisian music " especially japan, korea and mainland china or taiwan
not including indian music 、 Arabian music 、 Central Asian countries music or south-east asian countries music ,,,am i right ??

stepho_chan 15th April 2010 06:36 AM

Most Jpop i listen to actually has substance unlike american music. Theres a few american artists i like, but im mostly into jpop and other artists from around the world cause i think american music all sounds the same. I really do like to listen to pretty much anything though. Going through my iTunes i have a lot of stuff from all over. I've got Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, British, Netherlands, Australian, Spanish, Italian, French, Serbian, Greek, Russian...I love music in general, but i just wish american artists or at least whats popular expanded more

hearted 15th April 2010 04:02 PM

BECAUSE OF THE HOT GUYSSS :lech

no seriously, i love asian music cuz its fresher than american stuff and more exciting

Aditmi Krisnasaki ~II~ 15th April 2010 04:35 PM

I like asian music (especially K-Pop n J-Pop, C-Pop really isn't my thing) because I don't have to find any reason about WHY I like it~ :D

chloeM 16th April 2010 12:59 PM

well, the way they compose lyrics.. i like Japanese song better than those Mandarin ones

♥Rain 18th April 2010 11:58 PM

i have absolutely no idea, never actually thought of it before! hm. i'd say lyrically and um.. lol really don't know, just love it! :)
