Nikkei Power Ranking is an annual list of entertainers that ranks how powerful they are within the entertainment industry. Here are the results:

Ayu is noticeably absent - I can't remember if she made the list last year or not either.

How Nikkei gets the rankings:

This is basically "THE" list annually. It tends to be given more weight compared to other lists. As far as the processes, here is what I know:

-It is similar to how Ninki is done, only with a MUCH larger sample. It is also (supposedly) done with an equal number of people from each gender as well as from each age group.
-They test the celebrities level of recognition (how well is their name or face recognized?)
-They ask how much interest the person has in them. Do they want to know more about them? Listen to their music? Watch them on TV? etc etc
From that, they come up with a combined total called the talent power score and then make the list as you see it.

So when you see Southern All Stars at the top with the number 50.3, it means that of all the people asked, slightly more than half answered that they are interested in this artist.

I don't understand why Ayu is not on the list ?

I don't see Koda Kumi on there either. Both have lost a significant amount of power in the industry it seems.

I don't get why Ayu and Kuu are not on the list, but Utada is.

She barely did a thing last year, except for Heart Station.

Both Ayu and Kuu did way more than her.. :?

I think this list takes more into account an artists power across all types of media, that includes concerts, tv lives, magazines, radio, variety shows, etc etc. So while Daigo may not have high record sales, he is all over tv shows and has pretty much become a part of the general japanese pop culture.

Koda and Ayu both being missing is sort of surprising, but at the same time not. Koda has been going down ever since that scandal. And if you notice, most of the people on the list are those that appeal to a very general, wide audience, where I think it could be argued that Ayu the last few years has been going off of mostly her dedicated core fan base and less and less so the general public perhaps?

I think an accurate description of the Nikkei power list would be to say that it is an annual measure of an artists influence over the general population.

Between the mid 90s and early 00s he would have been, but definitely not nowadays.

Mmm... strange list. I strongly believe that artists like Ayu (& maybe Kuu) have more power and influence on industry than many of those. And B'z should have ranked higher!

^ I think it only seems weird to us because around here we tend to just focus on our one or two favorite artists without really paying attention to what else might be going on in Japan. What's huge on AHS isn't always going to be an accurate reflection of whats actually going on in Japan.

For example, most people here could care less about owarai (Japanese comedy) yet comedians take up several spots on this list. Comedians are some of the most popular, powerful, and influential people in the whole country, yet most people here probably could name only 1 or 2 Japanese comedians, if even that.

Notice there is no KATTUN on any list either. Not even any of the individual members. They are another group that I feel is losing a lot of their traction with the general public and is becoming more heavily reliant upon their core fan base.

this is kinda another one of the reflections as to why I can't really get into Japanese culture...

it's just too weird to me.

The music, great...food, yummy...animations + games...best....everything else is just wtf to me lol.

This isn't anymore weird than any other aspect of what is popular in the culture.

The lack of women is very telling. I'd be more interested in how they came up with this list, however. Why is Ichiro on the list? Isn't he an athlete first and foremost? Why aren't there more athletes then?

Is Becky really the highest-ranked female? Does she really wield that kind of power in the industry? I would think she'd rank high because of popularity or visibility and not because she exercises any form of real power in the industry. I would think Miwa Yoshida would be a better candidate, or Sayuri Yoshinaga. Or maybe her media identity can never really be distinguished apart from DCT?

I dislike lists that don't reveal their processes. It's always a guessing game when it comes to their accuracy. But if I am to hazard a guess, I'd say that this is a list that more or less portrays what it's like in the Japanese entertainment industry, in spite of lack of transparency. For instance there are very few female comedians, and even fewer that are as popular as their male counterparts.

It's still a man's world, after all.

You have to keep in mind, that this is the current "power" list. If it were an overall list, I'm sure they would be much much higher. But really, they have not been in the media a lot lately and their last song that really seemed to grab the general public was Ocean back in 2005.

So it's a list based on popularity, after all. And I thought we'd be getting some insight into the inner workings of the Japanese entertainment industry and which artists really wield power and influence apart from the producers and executives.
