TODAY (lyrics)

edit: Updated with the official lyrics.

TODAY

Today isn’t a special day
It’s not an anniversary or something like that
It’s not your birthday either
And yet this ordinary day is a treasure

You’re in your special seat, I sit on your right
We can collapse into laughter together
Is there anything that could make me happier?

For instance, yes, there’s no way
we can live forever
That’s why life is about how much we can love
in our limited lifetime

I wonder if people think they can heal their own wounds
by hurting others and putting them down?
I wonder if that’s the way the modern age is?

"How do other people see me?"
"What will other people think?"
Don’t live for someone else’s ideals,
holding back what you really want to say

Although we’re in this kind of world
Although we’re in this kind of era
I won’t throw it all away yet, if you’re here

For instance, yes, there’s no way
we can live forever
That’s why life is about how much we can love
in our limited lifetime

We don’t know how far
our future will stretch out
But what we can do is to live today
to the absolute fullest

Japanese lyrics:
Spoiler:

Thank you. These lyrics feel like I am...-level stuff IMO!

This is the cyberbullying song.

ohsixthirty 11th May 2016 08:01 PM

Hey, I thought this album was supposed to be dark? These lyrics are like the most uplifting thing I've ever heard from Ayu! :laugh

truehappiness 11th May 2016 08:02 PM

I think it was a mix of darkness and frankness/blunt honesty that she was hinting at in the interview when she was like "Eh? Is this really me?" lol.

I apparently missed this interview. You said this song also refers to cyber bullying?

truehappiness 11th May 2016 08:04 PM

We never got the full interview, but tenshi no hane translated a bit of it.

Iirc the 109News article said that it has both darkness and more uplifting stuff, and shows many sides of Ayu :)

Wow, I really like these lyrics.

Oh, thanks! I definitely missed that. I love this sentiment and really appreciate the thought behind it.

amazing lyrics! the last part is my favorite

Delirium-Zer0 11th May 2016 08:27 PM

These lyrics make me so happy. I love this so much. This feels, lyrically, like a new version of "Dearest." Like, "stuff sucks, but at least we have each other." It's awesome. :)

truehappiness 11th May 2016 08:28 PM

"Let's just live for TODAY and for each other, because that's what matters now." is the vibe I get. I love this album so much.

I wonder if the 20 year old Ayu would have written lyrics like this. They have that vibe of a lot of her earlier lyrics but with experience behind them.

Surreal17 11th May 2016 08:34 PM

Beautiful and inspirational. This comes in a moment from my life when I can really relate to it. So honest.

This part somehow really hit me when she posted it on twitter.

Thanks for the translation. ^^

Thank you!

Thanks! I love that this song is both down-to-earth and kind of bittersweet, but also hopeful.

Very straightforward. Very clear and encouraging :) Love the message about cyberbullying

yamadashun 12th May 2016 02:29 AM

Thank you for the translation and Romaji.

I feel the song is warm when I listen to it without knowing what it is saying but I almost cried when I listen to the song while reading this translation T_T

pimenta 12th May 2016 03:17 AM

Thank you for translating!!

wow, this is my least favorite song from the album, but the lyrics are amazing!
This part
"I wonder if people think they can heal their own wounds
by hurting others and putting them down?
I wonder if that’s the way the modern age is?"

is so real.
