--------------------------------------------------
* Thank you from my heart
For all your loneliness, pain, guilt and love until now

You see? I couldn't say this clearly until now
Thank you for this life of mine

When I couldn't treat myself right that day
It was not me at all who was hurt

You have always behaved cheerfully
And I never forget the day when I saw tears on your profile for the first time

I met a person who said, "I love you and want to protect you"
We start to walk together now
Whatever sadness we may face, whatever gladness we may feel
We promised to live on, sharing every moment together
Please watch over me

You see? I'll be grateful for whatever will happen hereafter
Thank you forever

On some nights, I quarreled with you and shouted in tears
Or ran away from home

But I know you have always understood me
More than anyone else in the end

I feel that person you once met and loved
Is somehow like the person I love

I feel that person you once met and loved
Is somehow like the person I love
For example, his casual gestures somehow remind me of the image of that person
When I noticed that
A very warm single tear slid down my cheek

* (repeat)

Mirrorcle Monster 20th September 2010 09:01 PM

I didn't read last part, i really love it!

primavera♥ 20th September 2010 09:12 PM

So beautiful... Merci. <3

miki_beland 20th September 2010 09:14 PM

I don't catch the message at all...

Mirrorcle Monster 20th September 2010 09:33 PM

I think she has a new boyfriend/girlfriend(everything can be possible)

Mai82Go 20th September 2010 09:33 PM

After reading this translation (thank you, masa) I get the feeling she is singing to her mother. Could be wrong but some of these lines give that bittersweet emotions that somehow connect with her mom.

Thanking her mother for her life, running away from home....it just seem to me like a song from a child to a parent - and it cannot be her father.

masa 20th September 2010 09:47 PM

I think so, too. I think it's quite likely that she is saying the words to her mother in this song.
And I'd like to add one thing. In this lyrics, "anata" is written as "貴女". That shows clearly that "anata" (you) is female.

*hearT_Place* 20th September 2010 09:55 PM

Thank you for the translation, and also for the explanation of how "anata" is written in this song!

miki_beland 20th September 2010 10:07 PM

oh thank you so much, masa! now i'll read it from that point of view ^^

Thanks for the explanation about 貴女. I love it when I'm right. (Not saying that it HAS to be to her mother that she is singing to, but I think it is...it just doesn't seem to be about romantic love)

Catzi 20th September 2010 10:44 PM

Thanks!

I think she's saying thank you to her mother, and that she's fallen in love with someone who resembles her father or her mother's old boyfriend or something like that.

rakeru 20th September 2010 10:46 PM

How sweet! These lyrics are really touching. She's doing a good job lately!

Exactly what I was thinking. :yes

Lanz16 20th September 2010 11:09 PM

The lyrics is reminding me of her mom or her dad.
I don't know but as I read it, those come out from my mind.

Mintkisses 20th September 2010 11:20 PM

Beautiful. Ayu makes a mater piece once again!

Michan 20th September 2010 11:32 PM

I love the lyrics =D. tHANK YOU

ren0210989 20th September 2010 11:33 PM

wow, really good lyrics :yes
thank you masa :)

Kanzaki 20th September 2010 11:33 PM

A message to her mom or perhaps grandmother, I think?
It'll be a really weird pv choice, if that's the case.
Thank you for the translation Masa.

freedreamer 21st September 2010 12:43 AM

I think gladness should be happiness??

And yea, the "run away" part...i also think this is to her mother. that part is so sweet. This SONG is so sweet :3

xLuna&1LOVE 21st September 2010 12:53 AM

This song sounds like a whole summary of the Edward-Bella drama in Twilight.
But I love it! It has so much emotion! A golden song!

AyUmIXx 21st September 2010 01:52 AM

woww what a touching lyric..
thanks so much!
and i think this song is for her mother~

ayumasing 21st September 2010 04:39 AM

Ack, someone actually compared Ayu Lyrics to Twilight? Sorry, I don't really like Twilight that much...:P
But I agree; I got the feeling that she was talking to her mother in some parts, but then another I was thinking could be about her deceased friend?

Refix 21st September 2010 07:25 AM

The song's and lyrics are really sweet, so many emotional things. So this song is for her mother? Can't understand why she wrote the title Virgin Road...

Yes I agree with you.
I think Virgin Road = her life. And the road she took.

The lyrics are really nice.

PoetGirl 21st September 2010 09:45 AM

love these lyrics very much and I like Mai82Go explanation, I thought so too

AyumiBest 21st September 2010 09:52 AM

Thank you so much!! These lyrics are sweet.

masa 21st September 2010 12:20 PM

You are welcome.

I had thought that "virgin road" is a correct English. So I'm a little surprised this time to know it's not so. In Japan, the word "virgin road" is used only in the case of wedding ceremony at a church. It means the center aisle of the church. Usually the bride walks there, led by her father, to the place where the bridegroom waits for her, in the beginning of the ceremony.

MissElin_ 21st September 2010 12:22 PM

Thank you for your translation! Its very pretty. This song came to grew on me alooooot! :heart

Minttulatte 22nd September 2010 07:39 AM

I like crossroad's lyrics better but these are good too. :)

Grateful should be used here as opposed to Ayu's... Greatful, haha.

Thanks for these~

My mistake. I correct it. Thanks.

AyuGAME 22nd September 2010 01:40 PM

yeah...the lyrics is kinda a dialog between child and parents

waterballoon 22nd September 2010 01:50 PM

Thank you for the translation; it's beautiful.

jon_the_d 22nd September 2010 01:53 PM

Thanks masa. from what you said about the phrase 'virgin road', what do you think is the reason for this choice of title?

masa 22nd September 2010 02:28 PM

Actually, I was surprised to read the lyrics, because they strongly suggested her marriage to come. At least, they seemed so to me.

k21sh3n 22nd September 2010 02:35 PM

^ now that u've explained the meaning of virgin road, it made me thinking the same thing.. she's saying thanks to her mum for everything because she's getting married..

panda87 22nd September 2010 03:57 PM

love love love it! definitely well be on my wedding soundtrack!!! thank you masa!

love in music 22nd September 2010 07:00 PM

anyone who is still curious what they are about, ayu just revealed on twitter that it's for her mom.

Quote:

Yes,I made it for my mom.it's like a episode2 of A song for @miki_spain: @ayu_19980408 VIRGIN ROAD's lyrics are a message to your mother

Pieces_of_SEVEN 23rd September 2010 04:19 PM

thanks for these :)

dreamland2.0 23rd September 2010 04:46 PM

Beautiful!
Thanks!

PoetGirl 23rd September 2010 05:01 PM

now when Ayu confirmed it I love it :) Its a gorgeous song

C+R+E+AYUMI 23rd September 2010 05:29 PM

so...may i assume this song id addresses to her mom Mariko...when she says:

<<I feel that person you once met and loved
Is somehow like the person I love
For example, his casual gestures somehow remind me of the image of that person
When I noticed that
A very warm single tear slid down my cheek>>

is she referring to her father? So the man she's in love with (!!!!) seems like her father??

OMG

tenshi no hane 24th September 2010 08:10 AM

^ Not necessarily, her parents been divorced for a long time now, so her mother has probably had new, other loves in her life (and Ayu could be referring to one of those)

Shiori_Hamasaki 24th September 2010 04:19 PM

I wait with very expected XD.
Thanks!!!

so silly me, you're right

Calico 24th September 2010 08:46 PM

It also all could just be hypothetical...or maybe she's getting married...who knows besides her, haha.

TITANIC 26th September 2010 09:00 AM

This is absolutely a song for her mother. so touchful

GREENdays 26th September 2010 02:38 PM

This is such a beautiful song.
I really like the singing to her mother, that's so lovely :)

Thank you for the translations and romaji!

jbrat2219 26th September 2010 02:41 PM

I think this song has the best lyrics of all the ones on L.

hidekirby 26th September 2010 05:09 PM

I'm not usually impressed by her recent lyrics, but Virgin Road's are truly beautiful!
Thank you very much masa!

murasakinohana 27th September 2010 07:57 AM

I'm getting this vibe that she's thankful to someone in her life.. Lyrics-wise, this seems like TO BE~part 2. :yes

HarukaKamiya 27th September 2010 12:00 PM

Ah, so I was semi-correct that since this song is about her mother, she's telling her mom, "Thank you! I've grown up into a good...ish... adult! :)" since A Song for xx was mostly about Ayu baaaaawing about having to grow up (that's my interpretation, anyway).

The references to marriage are a bit perplexing, though. Hmm... That's Ayu for ya.

Diana 27th September 2010 05:34 PM

It looks like growing up song.. If you get me lol When Ayu was growing up, her mom supported and protected her :)
Thank you masa again!!

I Am... Aaron 29th September 2010 07:41 AM

Thank you masa!

This is really so beautiful. Way to go, Ayu.

TeddyGrahams 30th September 2010 09:13 AM

It's definitely a powerful song lyrically, emotionally, and musically!

Thanks for the translation. Isn't it weird that she uses Ne? in the beginning of each of those statements? I never heard anyone says it in the beginning before. xD I need more practice I guess.

Lora-Ayu 2nd October 2010 07:38 AM

Very beautiful lyrics~ Thanks for sharing! :3

extepan 3rd October 2010 06:27 PM

thanks

Nukaru 3rd October 2010 07:06 PM

There's a mistake in the romaji ^^;

Quote:

Anata ga itsuka no sono mukashi deai aishita ano hito to
Watashi ga aishite iru hito wa dokoka nite ru ki ga shi masu
Should be:
貴女がいつかのその昔 出逢い愛したあの人と
私が愛している人は どこか似てる様な気がします
Anata ga itsuka no sono mukashi deai aishita ano hito to
Watashi ga aishite iru hito wa dokoka nite ru you na ki ga shi masu

masa 3rd October 2010 07:36 PM

I correct the part. Thanks. The translation doesn't change.

waterballoon 4th October 2010 07:38 AM

what beautiful and painful lyrics...

asmAyumi1992 6th October 2010 05:46 PM

Wow, this lyric is so direct. Thanks for translating.
