Is Ayumi just a big copycat?

This song has the EXACT same music and sound as Tell me why.

Delicious n Bold 17th June 2013 06:08 PM

No
They're credited in the album liner notes.
You should call it a quasi-cover.

YUKARI 17th June 2013 06:55 PM

oh God why :( this just ruined the Tell me why now :(

Surreal17 17th June 2013 07:27 PM

nice pv

NintendoHTF1242 17th June 2013 07:52 PM

Koda Kumi has done this a few times too. I think the company like, buys some of the rights to the song or something like that? Kuu did that with "Can We Go Back" and "Physical thing". It's really nothing new.

& + H 17th June 2013 09:43 PM

Big copy cat.

I remember there was a post about this, I can't seem to remember where.

TeamAyu2004 17th June 2013 09:52 PM

there was already a post about this.
And yes, everyone got credit where it was due.

Besides, this is pop music... everyone copies everyone.

Party_King 17th June 2013 10:19 PM

Sometimes the rights were sell to 2 different comapnys so this drama is "normal"...

Chiharo 17th June 2013 10:50 PM

She covered the song. What's so weird about that?

channy 17th June 2013 11:23 PM

To be more exact, Avex solely bought the rights for the instrumental. The lyrics of the original song are completely different from Ayu's version.

^^ What the... that was just unnecessarily rude.

drdolce 18th June 2013 03:26 PM

I always knew Tell me why isn't a Japanese song tbh. It has always sounded so European in my ears that it just made sense when it was revealed it was actually a cover. Why is this such a big issue anyway? Bold & Delicious, Ladies Night, In The Corner, Pride, Beautiful Day, rainy day and Memorial address are also covers. ;)

marty 18th June 2013 03:35 PM

I don't really think "cover" is the right word for it... She just paid someone for their composition, like she always did. European or Japanese, it's the same, and it really doesn't matter if someone sang on the same melody before, if I paid it's rightfully mine.
It's like saying Girls Generation stole Run Devil Run from Kesha just because she sang the demo firstXD

So many more than Run Devil Run
Also I Got a Boy, Dancing Queen, Mr. Taxi, Let it Rain etc...

Edit: point was, this is SUPER COMMON in the showbiz. And why shouldn't it be allowed? I mean, if there's a great tune out there that you'd love to write a song to, why not? Better to buy the rights to the instrumental than to make a song that sounds a lot like it. I think it shows respect to buy the song.

ayudancer 18th June 2013 04:24 PM

This thread is not a waste at all. I never took the time to do the research on this song so thank you jennjenn2010 for posting this :-)

Just ignore his posts. He likes being exceptionally rude towards people who say one bad-thing about Ayu.

ayu-michan 18th June 2013 11:53 PM

Don't you call it "bought the song" ?? This is why I like Japan, the singer can buy the songs for all I care, but no one really says anything. In vietnam, whenever they hear some song that is familiar to a K-pop song, they blame the singer that they copy the music. It's so annoying. :no

mecury2511 19th June 2013 05:29 AM

Avex already paid for the song, ayu also wrote the composer name on the booklet :D

anw, I like Tell Me Why more, ayu has powerful voice here :))

microphone 19th June 2013 05:55 AM

Ivi's 'Sose Me' is by far my preferred version. Ayu's "Oh woah woah"s are just plain bad. Anyway, you see now that Ayu bought the rights to use the melody. Yes?

terra 19th June 2013 06:37 AM

actually someone tracked down teh song way before it was even released on PQ and posted it here, just from hearign a preview snippet, i clearly remember that.

And um as veryone else already said, Avex bought the rights to use it so. It's all legal and normal.

and apparently the OP is a new soul in Ayu's world so i don't think it is nescesarry to go saying rude stuff.

Andrenekoi 28th June 2013 05:12 AM

"Is Ayumi just a big copycat?"
This is a very strange choice of words just IMO.

khan5 28th June 2013 05:31 PM

i don't think its a problem if she has a similar melody to another song as long as she credited the composer, its just like with the songs on the missunderstood album, i would find it would be a problem if she didnt write the lyrics and said it was hers. However ayu did write the lyrics .

happiholic★ 28th June 2013 07:02 PM

Nothing in pop music is original anymore. And besides, this is how songs are made. We don't see what goes on behind the scenes of music making. This happens all the time, I'm sure.

^Ikr, the way the author phrase "Is Ayumi just a big copycat" made her sounds super awful while this thread only asking about Tell me why, geez -_-

I admit in the past she 'copycat' some things from Madonna or Kylie Minogue or other western singers, but lately she didn't do that much imo in any case she's more inspired by rather than copying while defining her own style.

I don't think she ever "copied" anything, besides the MTRL girl logo thing... she always mentioned Madonna as her inspiration and even those websites that claim that Ayu is a copy cat by posting pictures of "similarities" with the costumes (of Madonna, Gaga, Britney, Christina, etc), it is not even identical. The costumes might have similarities but that doesn't mean it's a copy-cat thing. Nowadays everyone grabs inspiration and ideas from other artists, authors, and yet people are always trying to make it look like a bad thing.

Yes this one is very inspired ! that was the time when Avex wanted to make her look like the asian Madonna ! But she is far to be the only Namie Amuro looked very much like J-lo when she began to make R&b & hip hop etc... (for exemple)

marty 29th June 2013 10:12 AM

Well, sometimes it's so painfully obvious that's almost irritating (still watching the motorcycle scene in Starting makes me cringe from how much is taken from Toxic by Britney) but still, Ayu is one of the few singer outside whom clearly put her vision in everything she does. I find it easier to forgive "inspirations" from someone whom usually use her head to deliver beautiful things.
People tend to forget most singer put just their face and style in their work: people like Ayu put more, and I don't mean just the lyrics.

mizuki-7 29th June 2013 10:40 AM

The whole Startin MV was a parodie but if you don't know Ayu yes you will think it's a rip off of Toxic lol but it's also the fault of the director of the MV even if Ayu is very implicated she must follow the script !

CatGirl 29th June 2013 02:01 PM

The motorcycle scene in the Startin' MV reminds me way more of Kill Bill than anything, haha. Also, I'm surprised that You & Me/We Found Love hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet >_> That's Ayu's worst offense when it comes to ~*inspiration from other artists*~ imo

marty 29th June 2013 02:48 PM

Uh? I don't see similarities between You&Me and We Found Love... Now I'm going to watch them again!XD

terra 29th June 2013 04:10 PM

^You & Me really reminds me of We Found Love even the musical direction albeit different but the two has sort of a similarity.

There's nothing similar between the two...lol

~.:*:.YaSuMi.:*:.~ 30th June 2013 03:24 AM

The world is full of similarities.. Just because she uses a motorcycle doesn't mean she's copying without shame to others... well, I guess all humans do "copy" others ideas from time to time. Ayu has a very own style and she's not an exact copy of Madonna or Britney, copying all the videos, the identical songs, even the lyrics without shame, if she was and did that i would hate her.

What about the Kanariya video? Britney appeared with diamonds all over her body on the Toxic video too, that was several years after Kanariya. Before I used to think she was copying Ayu but that's so immature to think.. and if that was the case, who cares? they're different singers anyways.

Yes it looks similar, but that's a costume. Costumes are for public use, they are not patented or exclusively of "X" singer.

terra 30th June 2013 05:16 AM

^Yes I know that, it's not belong to someone in fact it belongs to showgirl performers like those in Moulin Rouge etc. I don't blame ayu, it's just that based on the evidence of previous use of costume adaptations, those costumes ayu wore could possibly inspired by Kylie's tour.

happiholic★ 30th June 2013 05:54 AM

While I don't put it past Ayu to take, uh... ~inspiration~ from other artists, I think some things, like the costumes, are just coincidence. If I'm not mistaken, Kana Nishino wore a flowly green dress in one of her concerts. I don't think she stole it from Ayu. Its just an unoriginal dress. I say again: nothing is original in music anymore. And it doesn't seem that people are trying to change that, just putting their personal touch on the ideas that already exist.

CatGirl 30th June 2013 01:39 PM

OK lmao. The buildup to the choruses in both songs are very similar, as are the music videos (happy couple with the relationship eventually deteriorating). This was pretty much pointed out by everyone when You & Me was released.

terra 30th June 2013 01:59 PM

^I remember in both videos there were scenes with the shopping trolley lol

^^I agree nothing is original anymore these days, it's just people improvising with the existing ideas or things.
The reason I point the green dress and the showgirl outfit is because both costumes appear in the same tour both for Kylie and Ayu; the green dress is for a ballad segment with a dancing/flauting male dancer like Ayu and Shuya. So it's not to the extent that Kana 'stole' a green flowy dress from Ayu, it's just that we know Ayu has Kylie as one of her inspirations.

Ayu loves cabaret and showgirl concepts I guess, AT07 evolution is a proof she was inspired by Moulin Rouge http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8...0aeyo1_500.jpg
This reminds me of AT05 INSPIRE's head dress
http://horiwood.files.wordpress.com/...ulin-rouge.jpg
And this reminds me of AT05 GAME / Kuu's TRICK Tour showgirl and maybe AT07 AUDIENCE-Boys & Girls as well
http://24.media.tumblr.com/fe1589a0a...eqoko1_500.jpg

Anyways, I would love to see if she'll adapt to other films, especially by Baz Luhrmann. I can't imagine Ayu wearing things inspired by The Great Gatsby! :heart

The one where they compare her to Christina's video is not fair at all... just because of the black wig and dark costume... and also the one with the black dress that looks similar to Britney's.... i mean, seriously, nowadays one can't simply just put a black dress because people will find 1,000 comparisons of other people who wore a black dress and say you are a copycat. :eviltongu:no

The last one of the UNITE/Dune cover... that one is scary! I think it's more than a coincidence. :(

drdolce 1st July 2013 10:48 AM

Damn, I knew I had seen those ourselves scenes somewhere when I saw that PV for the first time! :O

marty 1st July 2013 11:42 AM

Sometimes is plain obvious, but sometimes people are really unbelievable... like, ok, for a summer song I'm on a beach in a summer suit, so I copied the millions of singers before me because they did it too? And that's only one example I remember I saw.
I mean, some things are copied or "inspired by", but a lot of things are cliches, and, most importantly, some things are nothing. Like, snow for a winter ballad or beach for a summer song, or two plain red t-shirts.
I'm not attacking anyone here, we're talking normally in this thread (and I love that), I'm just slowly remembering all I had to see in the past years... And some stuff was beyond crazy!XD

I'm surprised about that, but I don't think that ayu is a Copycat. I always thing when I listen this song that is so western, and an unusual song of ayu. But anyway some songs of kuu ayu and namie are composed by europeans composers.

douggn 3rd July 2013 02:03 AM

basically to everyone, ayu bought the music and wrote the lyrics like most of her songs, but this time the music she bought was used elsewhere, just like she did with (miss)understood, Bold and Delicious, Ladies Night etc, except ayu go (miss)understood out before sweetbox got there versions out

if you say B&D/Pride, Ladies Night, ITC, Beautiful Day and rainy day are covers - it's the same thing for Memorial address...
use the melody got a new arrengement and new lyrics...

LIST OF SONGS ayu covered on her CD's (use the melody or covered completely):

Sotsugyou Sashin (A BALLADS)
Memorial address (Memorial address)
Bold & Delicious ((miss)understood/Bold & Delicious+Pride)
Pride ((miss)understood/Bold & Delicious+Pride)
Ladies Night ((miss)understood)

Tell Me Why (Party Queen)
Happening Here (digital single/A SUMMER BEST)

tell me if theres is any cover missed :D

Andrenekoi 4th July 2013 01:49 AM

^Tell me why isn't a cover, it's a melody sold to multiple singers (what is pretty common). I actually wouldn't consider any of the Geo tracks or Memorial Address as covers, as they most likely were bought before the composers versions were released.

Example of the same case:

emi♡ 4th July 2013 03:12 AM

Yeah...the (miss)understood songs are not covers.

Those are HER songs. She owns the rights to those songs. It could be that she only owns the rights to them in Asia...it could be that she owns them because they changed up certain things so much. Maybe they had a contract that allows both parties to use the songs.

Whatever the case, those are her songs lol

Sotsugyoy? SEVEN DAYS WAR, Happening Here, and I think teens....those are actual covers.

I think we should stop throwing that word around so much lol I don't think it means what people think it does.

ame-na-otoko 13th January 2014 02:20 PM

emi♡ is right, a song is only an actual cover if the melody and the lyrics are the same. If the lyrics are different then it wouldn't be classed as a cover. Maybe, as someone earlier said, a partial cover. Similar to Faye Wong's take on songs by Tori Amos and Cocteau Twins.
