Who sampled who? Kumi Vs. Blackberry phone?

So I've actually known this for quite a while but since I don't actually OWN a Blackberry I didn't know the name of the Ring tone! lol!
Anyways right about the same time a snipet of Kumi's "Just the way you are" preview leaked, I was at the eye doctor's with my dad because he was getting lasecks (spelling)?
Anyways this much MUCH older caucasian lady's phone rang and I immediately perked up because I was like OMMFG! YOUR a KUMI FAN!? And she was like... I'm sorry dear Who is that?
And I was like.....but.....you have a piece of her song AS YOUR RING TONE! Needless to say she didn't know what it was it was set to automatic so that was useless.....Flash forward to WAY after June 5th 2010!
WAAAAY After the song was released I was in ROSS with my Boyfriend of all places and heard it AGAIN!
It was on this Black ladies Blackberry! Luckily her and her son was kind enough to scroll through ALL the ringtones to find what is was called because I told them I HAD TO KNOW.
So anyways the ringtone is called BB Grooves_interlude and you can hear it in Kumi's "Just the way you are" song! So my question is.....who sampled who? Someone please help! I must know!

BTW here's a link so you can here it! ^_^*

Wow, that's definitely the same tune! I would think the BlackBerry tune came first and Kuu sampled it. Good find!

AyuHamasaki01 6th June 2010 06:06 PM

That's kinda cool.

I think Kumi sampled blackberry...
Nice story though, I would want to know aswell if I heard something like that :D

Kingdom 6th June 2010 07:28 PM

Kumi didn't sample it... Just The Way You Are had been composed for a while, I heard the english demo before I heard Kumi's version. If anything the original composer sampled it, or maybe sold the song to BB too?

cool find!

Picaflor 7/4 6th June 2010 07:47 PM

ooh, i want that ringtone now.

is that ringtone on all blackberries? jtwya came out in 2008 didn't it? and the black berry has been around since 2002. I'm not sure if it has had that ringtone since way back then but if it has, then kumi sampled it.

My brother-in-law had a phone that started playing the ringtone and I'm just like "I'VE HEARD THIS BEFORE" and then I played "JUST THE WAY YOU ARE" and he's like "Lol wat" Nice find though.

Honestly though, how many popular pop artists can claim that their songs are all theirs?

hpg23 6th June 2010 09:32 PM

^Well, for sure Kumi can't. She has a gazillion songs full of samples...

lauraslm 6th June 2010 10:38 PM

The same thing happened to me!
I was on vacation in South Africa, and while I was in a cab the drivers' cellphone rang and I could swer it was "Just the way you are".
But I was too embarassed to ask... ^^"

Happened to me too!
A while ago I was having italian classes, one day the cell of my classmate rang and I was like: "OMG! Koda??", but I didn't ask her because it was in the middle of the class and she turned off her cell very quickly.

Well, obviously most musicians - not even only mainstream - can't usually claim them to be ALL theirs, but (and I'll be talking about Japanese artists right now, because Western artists don't apply, usually) most artists at least do most of their lyrics. Or, even if they don't do a lot of that (which applies to Kumi), their songs are at least written for THEM, and aren't rip-offs of other songs, or all covers:

I've recently found out that half her discography is either covers, samples, or songs that are shared with other artists in some way. (She's done quite a few "demos", or things like this, what ever this may be.) Not only are most of her songs not mostly hers, but they're pretty much not hers at all. So that's the problem. For a lot of "her" work, the only reason you can tag on the Koda name is because of her vocals. She doesn't do the composing or arranging or even the lyrics, and a lot of songs aren't even written with her in mind. It just gets old, learning that pretty much the only contribution the artist makes to most of her works are the vocals and images for the booklet. :shrug

Its still better than Namie who only goes into a studio every 5 years and says "Put in more English" then leaves, lol.

Hahaha. I love Namie Amuro but that cracked me up XD

I guess I understand why you're upset. I just tend not to think about it. Things like that are exactly why I value Ayu more as a true ARTIST than Kuu or Namie. The latter two are awesome performers though ^^

Crystal_Ageha 7th June 2010 12:15 AM

^* Yup. Yet another reason why I dislike Amuro so much. ....But Kumi, she's getting the same way. She'll sacrifice vocals for dance moves, try way too hard to be 'sexy' or 'cool'....Puts out a bunch of generic crap half the time, and then the other half of the time it's covers/samples (which, Namie has quite a few, herself, that I didn't originally know about :O). And also like Namie, sometimes she can be so J-Pop, but then she can also be so Western-poseurish...... Oh, God, one of my favourite singers is turning into one of my least favourite. :weep Kumi still does most of her lyrics, though, and she originally did almost all of her older songs, unlike SOMEbody. :X

hpg23 7th June 2010 02:30 AM

The thing is, that I don't see the need at all for using samples and such. With all the musical talents that Japan has, and all the power that Avex holds, it's just a matter of lazyness that she has to get songs that aren't hers. It doesn't matter if she's buying them, I just feel it isn't right. She can write decent lyrics and she has a good team behind her, why not taking things a little higher? I love Koda Kumi, she is one of my favorite artists and I respect her a lot as a performer and individual, but taking more consideration into her artistry would make her less fake and more of a musician. I know she loves music a whole lot and has been pursuing her dream of being a singer all her life; why is she letting this continue then? Just for counting, look at this small piece of her very recent discography:

-TRICK album= JUST THE WAY YOU ARE - BlackBerry sample (not counting Venus since that is stated as a cover.), This is not a love song - same instrumental as Nevena Tsoneva's "Za Tebe Pesen Niamam"
-Alive/Physical Thing = Alive takes a sample from a classical piece, and they bought Physical Thing from an unknown/less budget singer.
-Can We Go Back? = Just a version of the Kelly Clarkson song.

It's just too much, in the honest opinion of a fan.

Um isn't that completely false?
Also This is not a love song = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CvZ28y2zkY

hpg23 7th June 2010 02:49 AM

^The last I heard was that it was a demo from GaGa. Was it proven false?

Oh my, I totally didn't know about This is not a love song. It's the same instrumental D:

love in music 7th June 2010 03:00 AM

^ I think it's that before it came out, by the title of it people thought it would be the Lady GaGa demo, but it sounds like this and I only heard Kumi's version once or twice but I don't remember it sounding like that.
