Avex Divas

I've been hearing that term being tossed around lately here and there, and I was wondering what exactly it is, and who qualifies to be an Avex diva.

What comes to mind are the obvious three
Ayu, Namie and Kumi...

AyuGAME 16th June 2010 06:07 PM

Ayu
Namie
Kumi

BoA and Ai Otsuka is almost there, but they are fade away...

aikawa nanase and hitomi used to be avex diva too...

2Hurt 16th June 2010 07:14 PM

What qualifies them? Well I guess they're best selling avex female artists... also they're the most famous and probably get most tie-ins and things like that?

hpg23 16th June 2010 09:26 PM

It's all about playing with bottles, having the same facial expression over and over again and loving some crazy vibratos.

j/k :laugh

for me, what describes an "Avex diva" (weird term) is a female artist under Avex with a LONG and lasting career with great success. They happen to have influenced Japanese pop culture to a certain extent and are leaders in terms of fashion, beauty styles and musical success, with long, lavish tours and PVs, an army of fans and of haters.
Only Ayu, Kuu and Amuro qualify as current Avex divas. Notable mentions from the past would be hitomi and Ami Suzuki, too.

:mgrin Haha! That is so true!
Too bad Ami Suzuki's career died...she had good music. and still has some pretty good stuff!

LOL! :roflmao

I like how you all mention hitomi as the avex diva too :love she used to be so influential in the end of 90s and beginning of 00s. She might not be active anymore, but her presence did influence the music career of J-pop.

Too bad ami suzuki cant have the fans like she did in her debut era, or else she'll be the one who still can compete with ayu, namie or kuu.

Calico 17th June 2010 06:44 AM

dunno if I would count Ami as an avex diva...all her success was during her Sony days. She had a little momentum with ATW but not much I'd call it diva-ish. But otherwise I agree with most of the other names thrown around here too...Hitomi Shimatani once had potential too but her career didn't quite take off enough.

Kingdom 17th June 2010 06:44 AM

Ayumi, Namie, Kumi. They are the top three solo female artists on Avex and all happen to be very popular in japan.

It's not really about diva style, because only kuu and ayu do that. Namie doesn't really do the whole diva look for the most part!

ストロボ・EdGE 17th June 2010 06:50 AM

They're obvious- Ayu, Koda Kumi, and Amuro Namie are of course, Tsuchiya Anna and alan are obviously not.

y_nathz 17th June 2010 09:34 AM

Ayu, Namie and Kuu
Pretty obvious :yes

BoA, Ai Otsuka, and hitomi are on the list too if you asked this years ago

AyuGAME 17th June 2010 11:50 AM

oh...i forget...

we need to count misia...she is a diva as well...

Well at least Namie is a cool type of diva who doesnt make controversies in the entertainment world. From what I've known, lots of divas in the world are making horrible controversy.

yes she is :luv2 she definitely is. How about Chihiro Onitsuka? does she counted as one too?

AyuGAME 17th June 2010 01:51 PM

^i don't think chihiro is with avex...she is with sony right?

prussian blue 17th June 2010 03:26 PM

^ah yah, she's not in avex. So does MISIA, but she spent more time in avex though

Technically ami suzuki was never an avex diva. Her popularity was nowhere near diva level when she joined avex.

I would include among the past ones Keiko as well, even if she was a part of globe.

AyuGAME 17th June 2010 04:09 PM

yeah...ami suzuki used to be sony divas, but when the scandal up in the air, and her carier go down....until now she never become big again...

Two of the most talented underrated singers!

MISIA had quite the boom in the early 00s and Chii-chan had popularity around that time too, but I don't think they're quite the same level as Ayumi or Namie per se.

AyuGAME 17th June 2010 05:43 PM

i don't think misia is underrated...she still can hold a grand concert on big venue...
she even can perform overseas....
her last album doing pretty good too...
i think she has a lot of dedicated fans at japan, and people respect her big voice...

while chihiro is fade away, i think her popularity is gone because her hiatus...

Nackar_91 17th June 2010 05:59 PM

MISIA isn't underrated per se ... but it is weird how she was extremely popular in the 90s-early 00s and is now at a completely different level. Still selling well, but definitely not like Namie Amuro and Ayu.

Mirrorcle Monster 17th June 2010 06:05 PM

Namie, Ayu and Kuu are Avex divas, no doubt.
