Interview
Spoiler:
Debuting with her first single "Ghost Enemy" in September of this year, MAA just released her newest song "Ballerina Brain System" last month and finally dropped her first mini-album Monkey Kingdom on December first, showcasing her uniquely transient lyrical style and the fashionable electro sound with which it's intertwined. Born to an American father and a Japanese mother, her bewitching appearance has resulted in comparisons to many Western pop artists, and she's even been called the Japanese Lady Gaga.

"While I'm happy to be compared to Lady Gaga, the image I portray might be closer to Gwen Stefani," MAA said of the comparisons. "I feel like my style is full of components taken from people like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna."

With her eccentric attitude and tasteful tattoos, even MAA's look has been getting attention, but is she really a Nylonista at heart?!

"Nylon is the only magazine I read. About two years ago, I saw the front cover and thought it was cute. I'm into simple things lately, so I've been shopping at places like American Apparel, TOPSHOP and ZARA, but I usually end up trimming and sewing pieces to my own custom preference. When I'm secreting hormones*, I show skin like Katy Perry."

The overall sound of Monkey Kingdom boasts global-standard electro and R&B at its core alongside a diverse variety of genres including rock and dance. Of course, as all lyrics were written entirely by MAA herself, the distinctive, prickly emotions of the woman known as the "psycho Cinderella" are depicted realistically in her songs, a true highlight of the album.

"I write my lyrics inside a tent in my room. The space within that tent is kind of like a womb, so it's as if all of my songs were born there. Myself, I don't really know if I'm the type of person who can charge ahead of conflicts and troubles. So this time, there's lyrics about my anger towards adults who can't think of anything but money, and a Christmas song with an AV actress as the protagonist, and things that are kind of hard to put into words — but on the other hand, because of those bitter experiences in my past, I believe that I was able to meet the friends that are with me now. I wonder a little if I was able to write about myself honestly and genuinely in all of those songs."

The album's message may be that it's possible to know joy through sorrow, but you can have fun in MAA's world, too.

"My papa calls me a crazy monkey, so I titled the album Monkey Kingdom, as in my own kingdom," she explained. "If people could have the chance to get to know me through this album, I think that'd be a good thing."

I actually wanted to download her music because
A.) She looks so fierce (and she reminds me of Leah Dizon at times lolol)
B.) Her song titles are interesting

Thx for the PV links, I'm gonna listen. Hope they're good <3

EDIT: ...omg I'm in love. Ballerina Brain System and Ghost Enemy are great. I think I'll download her debut mini-album.

FIRSTKLAS 9th December 2010 06:27 AM

She's pretty good. :yes

Definitely the most Gaga-esque I've seen from Japan so far. :cool

emi♡ 9th December 2010 06:51 AM

hunny bunny dance!

She's just right up my alley! lol I love how she seems so quirky and weird, but still way fun! I love her. That second song...REALLY sounds like one I've heard somewhere...but...cant...I dont know, I feel like I've heard it before...but anyway...

Thanks so much for finding all these wonderful artists for me! I love you :heart

Thanks for putting up the interview too!

happiholic★ 10th December 2010 03:43 AM

Hmm. Her songs are good and really catchy, but they are pretty safe. She kinda sounds like a cross between mini and Ayaka Ikio. And she looks like Leah Dizon. And I don't like Leah Dizon. I doubt I will listen to her, simply because of that :P

AyUta 10th December 2010 04:05 AM

OMG, Ghost Enemy sounds like Crystal Girl by ICONIQ XD I knew it sounded like something else. I think she's very interesting, and I will follow her :)

visionfactory 10th December 2010 04:08 AM

I consider Ghost Enemy to be an alternate version of Crystal Girl :yes I love both songs

I'm curious, why you dislike Leah Dizon so much?

tinka69 10th December 2010 08:03 AM

There's only one question to ask... where can I download?

Chibi-Chan 10th December 2010 02:50 PM

I think I like her, want her album now!^^

prussian blue 10th December 2010 03:45 PM

I'm still not sure how to pronounce her name...

I liked the title, her style...but her voice is kinda generic, so is the music. I thought she would be slightly more OLIVIA-like. But I still kinda like her music...huh, I might just give in and download some of her stuff.

tbh, I don't really have a reason. I don't like her music, I don't find her pretty, and I don't like her personality when I see her live.

gothicayu 10th December 2010 09:56 PM

i love the second pv .its very original (in a gaga-ish way) she looks definatly half . anybody know what her origins are ?

Kanzaki 10th December 2010 10:00 PM

Her dad was a US army soldier.

emi♡ 10th December 2010 10:02 PM

^In the interview, it says her father is American and her mother is Japanese :)

So I really like the album. It's not...like, something really groundbreaking, but it's really listenable, and I love the tone of all the songs. I also like her vocals, even with the vocaloid stuff, it all really goes well together. Her songs are, catchy, without being cliche, and the arrangements are fun for electro.

I really love her <3 I guess I can see the comparisons to Gaga, but I really feel like this album has a more unique approach to it, if she was really "trying" to be like Gaga, I think there would have been heavier electronic beats than what there are, and more sex lol

About leah...I think she has leah's nose...but other than that, they don't look alike, and I dont think they act alike either lol

And MAA's one album owns leah's whole discography, so...yeah.

Kanzaki 10th December 2010 10:04 PM

^
Yup. Read it on her Wikipedia page ^^

I LOVE her nose...mainly because I've got a similar honker myself :laugh

emi♡ 10th December 2010 10:08 PM

^how pretty! I actually started liking those noses more, before I didn't, but now, I think it gives a really unique look that a lot of people don't have, and I think it's something to value.

All the models I've started liking recently, have really unique noses, and they look so cool lol

Anyway, do people have favorite songs yet?

I think my absolute fav is ballerina brain system, and then I think maybe Beautiful Mistakes, and then probably Ghost enemy...I really like Virgin killer Santa and Tomorrow @ your kingdom too. Oh, and I forgot about Hangover Payback, that's a good song too.

Honestly, she reminds me of like...ICONIQ mixed with immi lol

visionfactory 11th December 2010 02:32 AM

My favorites are Tomorrow @ Your Kingdom and Ballerina Brain System :heart

I wonder what he looks like. I can guess that most likely he is Caucasian, but he could be any number of things when it just says "American".
