Catcher In The Light... Is there any special meaning?

Yes, I'm talking about the intro of MY STORY album.

I understand the meaning of the lyrics but why it's called Catcher In The Light?
Because in my language the meaning is kinda weird or almost no meaning...

Is this a phrase or an idiom?
Have Ayu talked about this intro before?

Thanks in advance!

I just always took it as she was the catcher in the light.
with the lyrics:
'If you only look
You will never get it
If you only look
It will never be yours'

the 'light' being whatever you want if you only look at what you want you will never get it, if you only look it will never be yours kinda thing.

Tbh I thought it was a nice sounding rip off of the catcher in the rye.

TeamAyu2004 13th December 2012 06:02 PM

Originally published for adults, it has since become popular with adolescent readers for its themes of teenage confusion, angst, alienation, and rebellion.

^ah ok, thanks!

after reading about it (read it in high school but didnt really get the reference till you asked)

but if could be a play on that as well, since it fits the themes of what ayumi was trying to do.

Nice reference but... lol.

I understand then, I guess, haha.

Thanks for the answers!

There's a section in the book Catcher In The Rye where a character is on a carasolue trying to reach a gold ring. I connect the lyrics to that part

'If you only look
You will never get it
If you only look
It will never be yours'

The character sees the gold ring and tries to get it. Ayu says that if you don't try, you cannot grab that golden ring.

That's my interpretation. Thank goodness I read that in my AP English class lol

I remember that when Sparkle was about to come out, we got the lyrics before the actual song, and some people thought that Sparkle was a long version of Catcher In The Light.
Mainly because of the chorus of Sparkle :

Quote:

If you only look, nothing happens
And it will never be yours
Until when are you going
To look on enviously there like that ?

Yeah, Catcher in the Rye refers to how Holden has this dream, he's in a field of rye with these kids, and he's catching them before they fall from the cliff. Allegory for stopping children from losing their innocence, like when he goes to the school and rubs the profanities off the wall. Pretty sure it has something to do with another poem about sex though? Eh, I don't know, I've never studied the book and I read it when I was older so I didn't get the whole angst thing.

No idea what Catcher in the Light has to do with that...

Wow...

Sounds so creative in the end.

It's possible that CMJK made up the title and Ayu just ran with it. I remember in a Q&A or something, either he or another composer mentioned that sometimes titles are Ayu's idea while other times they are their own. I think I saw online that originally "opening Run" was just titled Run by CMJK but it was changed to "opening Run" for the album.

I think the title probably has nothing to do with the lyrics and the title was chosen or kept because it felt right? The inspiration was probably obviously from Catcher in the Rye. In an interesting note, CMJK apparently did a remix for a Ghost in the Shell: SAC game in 2004 and GitS takes some inspiration from JD Salinger's work so perhaps that track was influenced by that?

The names also only differ by one character in Japanese.
Catcher in the Rye in katakana
キャッチャー・イン・ザ・ライ

Catcher in the Light in katakana
キャッチャー・イン・ザ・ライト

After people mentioning the book I also thought about the titles in katakana, very interesting I think.

The difference is only 'to' at the end.

So I guess this is the official one.
Thanks!
